Following the arguments presented by Mansuripur [Opt. Express, vol. 16, 2008, pp. 14821–14835], we suggest a form for the macroscopic electromagnetic stress tensor appropriate for ionized media. The generalized Lorentz force includes the effects of polarization forces as well as those on the free charge and current densities. The resulting tensor is written in terms of the fields D, B, E, and H. Its expression for a fully ionized medium subject to an external electromagnetic field is discussed, as are the plasma conservation equations. An apparatus is suggested for its experimental discrimination.

The backward symplectic DIII-D map and continuous symplectic analog of the map for magnetic field line trajectories in the DIII-D [10] (Luxon, J. L. and Davis, L. E. 1985 Fusion Technol.8, 441) in natural canonical coordinates are used to calculate the magnetic footprint on the outboard collector plate of the DIII-D tokamak from the field errors and internal topological noise. The equilibrium generating function for the DIII-D used in the map very accurately represents the magnetic geometry of the DIII-D. The step-size of the map is kept considerably small so that the magnetic perturbation added from symplectic discretization of the Hamiltonian equations of the magnetic field line trajectories is very small. The natural canonical coordinates allow inverting to the real physical space. The combination of highly accurate equilibrium generating function, natural canonical coordinates, symplecticity, and small step-size then together gives a very accurate calculation of magnetic footprint. Radial variation of magnetic perturbation and the response of plasma to perturbation are not included. The footprint is in the form of toroidally winding helical strips. The area of footprint scales as 1st power of amplitude. The physical parameters as toroidal angle, length, and poloidal angle covered before striking, and the safety factor all have fractal structure. The average field diffusion near X-point for lines that strike and that do not strike differs by about four orders of magnitude. The flux loss decreases for high values of amplitude of perturbation.

Theoretical analysis is presented of the nonlinear behavior of charge carriers in biological tissue under the influence of varying low-intensity electromagnetic (EM) field. The interaction occurs because of the nonlinear force arising due to the gradient of the EM field intensity acting on free electrons in the conduction band of proteins in metabolically active biological cell membrane receptors leading to a redistribution of charge carriers. Field dependence of the resulting dielectric constant is investigated by a suitable modification to include an additional electronic contribution term to the three-term Debye model. The exogenous EM field propagating in this nonlinear cellular medium satisfies the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and can be affected significantly. Resulting field effect can be substantially augmented and effective rectification/demodulation can occur. Possible implications of this modification on biological processes in white and grey matter are discussed.

We present numerical solution of a fully nonlinear electron kinetic equation in self-similar variables, which on the one hand has all features of a ‘standard’ hydrodynamics (ratios of the electron mean free path to the scale length γ ≡ λC/L 1), and on the other hand has no restriction on the smallness of the parameter γ. The self-similar variable approach reduces dimensionality of the space-dependent kinetic equation, thereby providing numerical analysis of the electron heat transport in the velocity space. The electron distribution structure and its super thermal power-law tail are examined.

This paper presents an analytical study of the impact of image force on the kinetics of an irradiated complex plasma. The formulation is based on the average charge theory and includes both the number and energy balance of electrons/ions along with the charge neutrality condition. The dependence of reduction in the potential energy surface barrier (and work function) on the number density of dust particles has been investigated and its impact on the charging of dust grains and other physical plasma parameters has been discussed. An interesting conclusion is the fact that the image force consideration leads to larger magnitude of negative charge on the dust particles and the effective work function approaches the value for plane surface with increasing size and number density of dust grains.

This paper focuses on the progress in understanding the shielding around a test charge in the presence of ion-acoustic waves in multispecies plasmas, whose constituents are positive ions, two negative ions, and Boltzmann distributed electrons. By solving the linearized Vlasov equation with Poisson equation, the Debye–Hückel screening potential and wakefield (oscillatory) potential distribution around a test charge particle are derived. It is analytically found that both the Debye–Hückel potential and the wakefield potential are significantly modified due to the presence of two negative ions. The present results might be helpful to understand and to form new materials from plasmas containing two negative ions such as Xe+ − F− − SF−6 and Ar+ − F− − SF−6 plasmas, as well as to tackle extension of the test charge problem in multinegative ions' coagulation/agglomeration.

This paper presents a simple description of three-wave decay interactions involving a pump dispersive Alfvén wave (DAW), decay DAW and decay slow wave (SW) in a uniform magnetized plasma. When the ponderomotive nonlinearities are incorporated in DAW dynamics, the model equations governing the nonlinear excitation of the SWs by DAW in the low-β plasmas (β ≪ me/mi as applicable to solar corona) are given. The expressions for the coupling coefficients of the three-wave interaction have been derived. The growth rate of the instability is also calculated and found that the value of the decay growth time comes out to be of the order of milliseconds at the pump DAW amplitude B0y/B0 = 10−3.

Dispersion relation for the low-frequency magnetic electron-drift vortex (MEDV) mode in an inhomogeneous dense quantum plasma has been derived. New class of purely growing instabilities are found to exist on a time scale of the order of ion plasma period. We found that the MEDV mode become unstable when the propagation direction is perpendicular to the equilibrium density gradients. We believe that the present investigation would be useful to understand the wave phenomena and in the study of magnetic field generation in laser-produced plasmas as well as in dense space plasmas, where quantum effects are expected to play a dominant role.

When the krypton plasma in a DC glow discharge tube is exposed to an axial magnetic field, the turbulent energy and the characteristic dominant mode in the turbulent fluctuations are systematically and unexpectedly reduced with increasing magnetic field strength. When the index measuring the rate of transfer of energy through fluctuation scales is monitored, a lambda-like dependence on turbulent energy is routinely observed in all magnetic fields. From this, a critical turbulent energy is identified, which also decreases with increasing magnetic field strength.

The minimum breakdown requirement in magnetic field-driven sources, like inductively coupled plasmas, is examined. The minimum breakdown requirement is dominated by the ionization energy of the considered element. Therefore, a zinc plasma is relatively difficult to ignite compared to other metal plasmas.

It is shown that in the earth's conductive ionospheric E-region, large-scale ultra low-frequency Rossby and Khantadze electromagnetic waves can propagate. Along with the prevalent effect of Hall conductivity for these waves, the latitudinal inhomogeneity of both the earth's angular velocity and the geomagnetic field becomes essential. Action of these effects leads to the coupled propagation of electromagnetic Rossby and Khantadze modes. Linear propagation properties of these waves are given in detail. It is shown that the waves lose the dispersing property for large values of wave numbers. Corresponding nonlinear solitary vortical structures are constructed. Conditions for such self-organization are given. It is shown that nonlinear large-scale vortices generate the stronger pulses of the geomagnetic field than the corresponding linear waves. Previous investigations are revised.

The basic features of obliquely propagating dust ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary waves in an adiabatic magnetized dusty electronegative plasma (containing Boltzmann electrons, Boltzmann negative ions, adiabatic positive ions, and negatively charged stationary dust) have been investigated. The reductive perturbation method has been employed to derive the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation which admits a solitary wave solution. The combined effects of ion adiabaticity and external magnetic field (obliqueness), which are found to significantly modify the basic features of the small but finite-amplitude DIA solitary waves, are explicitly examined. The implications of our results in space and laboratory dusty plasmas are briefly discussed.

The frequency shift is obtained for an extraordinary electromagnetic wave propagating through plasma as function of an external magnetic field. A linear theory is used here to calculate the frequency shift, and the numerical results are given for typical laboratory fusion plasma. A limit case where the wave is propagating through rarefied plasma in the presence of some weak magnetic field is also studied. Estimation is given on the basis of some simplifying approximation for the frequency upshift of a type III radio bursts interacting with the Earth's magnetosphere.

Nonlinear equations which govern the dynamics of low-frequency (ω ⪡ ωci, where ω is the perturbation frequency of the wave and ωci is the ion gyro-frequency), ion-temperature-gradient-driven modes in the presence of equilibrium density, temperature and magnetic field gradients are derived. New set of nonlinear equations are derived. In the nonlinear case, new types of solutions in the form of dipolar vortices and vortex streets are found to exist in dense quantum plasma. These structures are found to be formed on very short spatial scales.

Large-amplitude Alfvén waves are ubiquitous in space plasmas and a main component of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the heliosphere. As pump waves, they are prone to parametric instability by which they can generate cyclotron and acoustic daughter waves. Here, we revisit a related process within the framework of the multi-fluid equations for a plasma consisting of many species. The nonlinear coupling of the Alfvén wave to acoustic waves is studied, and a set of compressive and coupled-wave equations for the transverse magnetic field and longitudinal electric field is derived for waves propagating along the mean-field direction. It turns out that slightly compressive Alfvén waves exert, through induced gyro-radius and kinetic-energy modulations, an electromotive force on the particles in association with a longitudinal electric field, which has a potential that is given by the gradient of the transverse kinetic energy of the particles gyrating about the mean field. This in turn drives electric fluctuations (sound and ion-acoustic waves) along the mean magnetic field, which can nonlinearly react back on the transverse magnetic field. Mutually coupled Alfvén-cyclotron--acoustic waves are thus excited, a nonlinear process that can drive a cascade of wave energy in the plasma, and may generate compressive microturbulence. These driven electric fluctuations might have consequences for the dissipation of an MHD turbulence and, thus, for the heating and acceleration of particles in the solar wind.

In dusty plasma, the overlapping Debye spheres around dust grains produce an attractive force. Shadowing force is exerted between neighboring particles because of mutual distortion of ion or neutral flux to the particles. A comparative study has been made on the role of these two forces on 2D structure of dusty system. Radial distribution function for the particles is a comparative study between the effect of the coupled Yukawa-shadowing potential and the coupled Yukawa-Overlapping Debye Sphere (ODS) potential on 2D dust crystal formation, which has been performed by using molecular dynamics simulation. The structure of the system is investigated by calculating the radial distribution function (g(r)) for different values of Γ, κ and dust number densities nd. It is seen from our study that the Coulomb coupling parameter does not have significant effect on both ODS and shadowing forces. The attractive shadowing force is more dominant for grains with large screening parameter. However, the ODS force becomes dominant with the increasing value of the dust number density. The results for the Yukawa-Shadowing and the ODS potential are also compared with experimental results and a close agreement is obtained for attractive shadowing force.

We investigate the relativistic electron motions in a two-frequency wiggler magnetic field with self-generated fields. The equations of motion are derived from the Hamiltonian which include the self-generated field, and we find the steady-state orbit from the equations of motion. The stability of electron motion in a two-frequency wiggler is examined by the numerical simulation. We analyze the a dynamical systems using the fast Fourier transformation and the Poincarè surface of section to find the critical value which have the periodical electron motion and to optimize the two-frequency wiggler.

The model by Braginskii [1] (Braginskii, S. I. 1965 Transport processes in plasma. In: Review of Plasma Physics, Vol. 1 (ed. M.A. Leontovich). New York, NY: Consultants Bureau, pp. 205–311) for the viscous stress tensor is used to determine the shear and gyroviscous forces acting within a toroidally confined plasma. Comparison is made to a previous evaluation, which contains an inconsistent treatment of the radial derivative and neglects the effect of the pitch angle. Parallel viscosity contributes a radial shear viscous force, which may develop for sufficient vertical asymmetry to the ion velocity profile. An evaluation is performed of this radial viscous force for a tokamak near equilibrium, which indicates qualitative agreement between theory and measurement for impure plasma discharges with strong toroidal flow.

Stabilities, instabilities and turbulences have always appeared into a cylindrical magnetized argon plasma. These phenomena are caused by linear or nonlinear dynamics and are interpreted with the linear or nonlinear theory accordingly. In this paper, an experimental study accompanied by theoretical justification and based on the wave–wave interaction has been made; an azimuthally moved driving wave is enforced in a very simple way. The turbulence stabilization, the wave coupling, the instability synchronization and other wavy interactions, which are caused by using an external spatiotemporal electric signal, are presented. The research of the wavy subjects continuing in our laboratory aspires to comprehend the plasma chaotic behavior and take a step into suppressing the unstable inclination.
