A class of simple kinetic systems is considered, described by the one-dimensional Vlasov–Landau equation with Poisson or Boltzmann electrostatic response and an energy source. Assuming a stochastic electric field, a solvable model is constructed for the phase-space turbulence of the particle distribution. The model is a kinetic analogue of the Kraichnan–Batchelor model of chaotic advection. The solution of the model is found in Fourier–Hermite space and shows that the free-energy flux from low to high Hermite moments is suppressed, with phase mixing cancelled on average by anti-phase-mixing (stochastic plasma echo). This implies that Landau damping is an ineffective route to dissipation (i.e. to thermalisation of electric energy via velocity space). The full Fourier–Hermite spectrum is derived. Its asymptotics are $m^{-3/2}$ at low wavenumbers and high Hermite moments ($m$) and $m^{-1/2}k^{-2}$ at low Hermite moments and high wavenumbers ($k$). These conclusions hold at wavenumbers below a certain cutoff (analogue of Kolmogorov scale), which increases with the amplitude of the stochastic electric field and scales as inverse square of the collision rate. The energy distribution and flows in phase space are a simple and, therefore, useful example of competition between phase mixing and nonlinear dynamics in kinetic turbulence, reminiscent of more realistic but more complicated multi-dimensional systems that have not so far been amenable to complete analytical solution.

Symmetries of a fluid-gyrokinetic model are investigated using Lie group techniques. Specifically, the nonlinear system constructed by Zocco & Schekochihin (Phys. Plasmas, vol. 18, 2011, 102309), which combines nonlinear fluid equations with a drift-kinetic description of parallel electron dynamics, is studied. Significantly, this model is fully gyrokinetic, allowing for arbitrary $k_{\bot }\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{i}$, where $k_{\bot }$ is the perpendicular wave vector of the fluctuations and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{i}$ the ion gyroradius. The model includes integral operators corresponding to gyroaveraging as well as the moment equations relating fluid variables to the kinetic distribution function. A large variety of exact symmetries is uncovered, some of which have unexpected form. Using these results, new nonlinear solutions are constructed, including a helical generalization of the Chapman–Kendall solution for a collapsing current sheet.

Turbulent mass and internal-energy transports in strongly compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence are investigated in the framework of the multiple-scale direct-interaction approximation, an analytical closure scheme for inhomogeneous turbulence at very high Reynolds numbers. Utilising the analytical representations for the turbulent mass and internal-energy fluxes and their transport coefficients, which are expressed in terms of the correlation and response functions, turbulence models for these fluxes are proposed. In addition to the usual gradient-diffusion transports, cross-diffusion transports mediated by the density variance and the transports along the mean magnetic field mediated by the compressional or dilatational turbulent cross-helicity (velocity–magnetic-field correlation coupled with compressive motions) are shown to arise. These compressibility effects are of fundamental importance since they provide deviations from the usual gradient-diffusion transports. Analogies of the dilatational cross-helicity effects to the magnetoacoustic waves are also argued.

We show results on the high-pressure equation of state of hydrogen–helium mixtures obtained from finite-temperature density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations using the van der Waals density functional. We discuss the calculation of non-ideal entropies based on different methods and show how nuclear quantum corrections influence the free enthalpy of mixing. Furthermore, we calculate a Saturn isentrope based on our new equation of state data.

To consider the contribution of the spin–orbit interaction in the extraordinary wave spectrum we derive a generalization of the separate spin evolution quantum hydrodynamics. Applying the corresponding nonlinear Pauli equation we include the Fermi spin current contribution in the spin evolution. We find that the spectrum of extraordinary waves consists of three branches: two of them are well-known extraordinary waves and the third one is the spin-electron acoustic wave. A change of the extraordinary wave spectrum due to the spin–orbit interaction is also obtained.

Hamiltonian extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) is restricted to respect helical symmetry by reducing the Poisson bracket for the three-dimensional dynamics to a helically symmetric one, as an extension of the previous study for translationally symmetric XMHD (Kaltsas et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 24, 2017, 092504). Four families of Casimir invariants are obtained directly from the symmetric Poisson bracket and they are used to construct Energy–Casimir variational principles for deriving generalized XMHD equilibrium equations with arbitrary macroscopic flows. The system is then cast into the form of Grad–Shafranov–Bernoulli equilibrium equations. The axisymmetric and the translationally symmetric formulations can be retrieved as geometric reductions of the helically symmetric one. As special cases, the derivation of the corresponding equilibrium equations for incompressible plasmas is discussed and the helically symmetric equilibrium equations for the Hall MHD system are obtained upon neglecting electron inertia. An example of an incompressible double-Beltrami equilibrium is presented in connection with a magnetic configuration having non-planar helical magnetic axis.

An asymptotic expansion is performed to obtain quasi-axisymmetric magnetic configurations that are weakly non-axisymmetric. A large space of solutions is identified, which satisfy the condition of quasi-axisymmetry on a single magnetic flux surface, while (non-axisymmetric) globally quasi-axisymmetric solutions are shown to not exist, agreeing with the conclusions of previous theoretical work. The solutions found are shown to be geometrically constrained at low aspect ratio or high toroidal period number. Solutions satisfying the more general condition of omnigeneity (generalized quasi-axisymmetry) are also shown to exist, and it is found that quasi-axisymmetric deformations can be superposed with an omnigenous solution, while preserving the property of omnigeneity, effectively extending the space of ‘good’ configurations. A numerical solution of the first-order quasi-axisymmetry problem is demonstrated and compared with solutions found with a widely used magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium solver, independently verifying that quasi-axisymmetry is satisfied at the appropriate order. It is thereby demonstrated that approximately quasi-axisymmetric solutions can be directly constructed, i.e. without using numerical search algorithms.

This paper addresses one aspect of the problem of the suppression of tearing mode magnetic islands by electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) injection, formulating the problem as the converse of a forced reconnection problem. New physical conditions are discussed which should be considered in the technical approach towards a robust control strategy. Limits on the ECCD deposition are determined to avoid driving the system into regimes where secondary instabilities develop. Numerical simulations confirming the theory are also presented.

First-principles simulations of tokamak turbulence have proven to be of great value in recent decades. We develop a pseudo-spectral velocity formulation of the turbulence equations that smoothly interpolates between the highly efficient but lower resolution three-dimensional (3-D) gyrofluid representation and the conventional but more expensive 5-D gyrokinetic representation. Our formulation is a projection of the nonlinear gyrokinetic equation onto a Laguerre–Hermite velocity-space basis. We discuss issues related to collisions, closures and entropy. While any collision operator can be used in the formulation, we highlight a model operator that has a particularly sparse Laguerre–Hermite representation, while satisfying conservation laws and the H theorem. Free streaming, magnetic drifts and nonlinear phase mixing each give rise to closure problems, which we discuss in relation to the instabilities of interest and to free energy conservation. We show that the model is capable of reproducing gyrokinetic results for linear instabilities and zonal flow dynamics. Thus the final model is appropriate for the study of instabilities, turbulence and transport in a wide range of geometries, including tokamaks and stellarators.

Energetic particle effects in magnetic confinement fusion devices are commonly studied by hybrid kinetic-fluid simulation codes whose underlying continuum evolution equations often lack the correct energy balance. While two different kinetic-fluid coupling options are available (current coupling and pressure coupling), this paper applies the Euler–Poincaré variational approach to formulate a new conservative hybrid model in the pressure-coupling scheme. In our case the kinetics of the energetic particles are described by guiding center theory. The interplay between the Lagrangian fluid paths and phase space particle trajectories reflects an intricate variational structure which can be approached by letting the four-dimensional guiding center trajectories evolve in the full six-dimensional phase space. Then, the redundant perpendicular velocity is integrated out to recover a four-dimensional description. A second equivalent variational approach is also reported, which involves the use of phase space Lagrangians. Not only do these variational structures confer on the new model a correct energy balance, but also they produce a cross-helicity invariant which is lost in the other pressure-coupling schemes reported in the literature.

The time-independent projection-operator formalism of Brey et al. (Physica A, vol. 109, 1981, pp. 425–444) for the derivation of Burnett equations is extended and considered in the context of multispecies and magnetized plasmas. The procedure provides specific formulas for transport coefficients in terms of two-time correlation functions involving both two and three phase-space points. It is shown how to calculate those correlation functions in the limit of weak coupling. The results are used to demonstrate, with the aid of a particular non-trivial example, that the Chapman–Enskog methodology employed by Catto & Simakov (CS) (Phys. Plasmas, vol. 11, 2004, pp. 90–102) to calculate the contributions to the parallel viscosity driven by temperature gradients is consistent with formulas previously derived from the two-time formalism by Brey (J. Chem. Phys., vol. 79, 1983, pp. 4585–4598). The work serves to unify previous work on plasma kinetic theory with formalism usually applied to turbulence. Additional contributions include discussions of (i) Braginskii-order interspecies momentum exchange from the point of view of two-time correlations; and (ii) a simple stochastic model, unrelated to many-body theory, that exhibits Burnett effects. Insights from that model emphasize the role of non-Gaussian statistics in the evaluation of Burnett transport coefficients, including the effects calculated by CS that stem from the nonlinear collision operator. Together, Parts 1 and 2 of this series provide an introduction to projection-operator methods that should be broadly useful in theoretical plasma physics.

Tokamak start-up is strongly dependent on the state of the initial plasma formed during plasma breakdown. We have investigated through numerical simulations the effects that the pre-filling pressure and induced electric field have on pure ohmic heating during the breakdown process. Three breakdown modes during the discharge are found, as a function of different initial parameters: no breakdown mode, successful breakdown mode and runaway mode. No breakdown mode often occurs with low electric field or high pre-filling pressure, while runaway electrons are usually easy to generate at high electric field or low pre-filling pressure (${<}1.33\times 10^{-4}$  Pa). The plasma behaviours and the physical mechanisms under the three breakdown modes are discussed. We have identified the electric field and pressure values at which the different modes occur. In particular, when the electric field is $0.3~\text{V}~\text{m}^{-1}$ (the value at which ITER operates), the pressure range for possible breakdown becomes narrow, which is consistent with Lloyd’s theoretical prediction. In addition, for $0.3~\text{V}~\text{m}^{-1}$, the optimal pre-filling pressure range obtained from our simulations is $1.33\times 10^{-3}\sim 2.66\times 10^{-3}$  Pa, in good agreement with ITER’s design. Besides, we also find that the Townsend discharge model does not appropriately describe the plasma behaviour during tokamak breakdown due to the presence of a toroidal field. Furthermore, we suggest three possible operation mechanisms for general start-up scenarios which could better control the breakdown phase.

Accurately modelling and forecasting of the dynamics of the Earth’s radiation belts with the available computer resources represents an important challenge that still requires significant advances in the theoretical plasma physics field of wave–particle resonant interaction. Energetic electron acceleration or scattering into the Earth’s atmosphere are essentially controlled by their resonances with electromagnetic whistler mode waves. The quasi-linear diffusion equation describes well this resonant interaction for low intensity waves. During the last decade, however, spacecraft observations in the radiation belts have revealed a large number of whistler mode waves with sufficiently high intensity to interact with electrons in the nonlinear regime. A kinetic equation including such nonlinear wave–particle interactions and describing the long-term evolution of the electron distribution is the focus of the present paper. Using the Hamiltonian theory of resonant phenomena, we describe individual electron resonance with an intense coherent whistler mode wave. The derived characteristics of such a resonance are incorporated into a generalized kinetic equation which includes non-local transport in energy space. This transport is produced by resonant electron trapping and nonlinear acceleration. We describe the methods allowing the construction of nonlinear resonant terms in the kinetic equation and discuss possible applications of this equation.

Kinetic ballooning modes in magnetically confined toroidal plasmas are investigated putting emphasis on specific stellarator features. In particular, we propose a Mercier criterion which is purposely designed to allow for direct comparison with local flux-tube gyrokinetics simulations. We investigate the influence on the marginal frequency of the mode of a magnetic curvature which is inhomogeneous on the magnetic flux surface due to the fieldline-label dependence. This is a typical (surface) global effect present in non-axisymmetry. Finally, we propose an artificial equilibrium model that explicitly retains the fieldline-label dependence in the magnetic drift, and analyse the stability of the system by introducing a representation of the perturbations similar to the flux-bundle model of Sugama et al. (Plasma Fusion Res., vol. 7, 2012, 2403094). The coupling of flux bundles is shown to have a stabilising effect on the most unstable local flux-tube mode.

The drift surfaces of minority heated ions differ from flux surfaces due to finite poloidal gyroradius effects. As the minority poloidal gyroradius approaches radial scale lengths in the plasma, the difference between drift and flux surfaces can modify the heating and lead to a symmetric spectrum minority counter-current being driven. In response, a corresponding overall net co-current of comparable size is driven. This beneficial symmetric spectrum current drive in a tokamak is due to the parallel velocity asymmetry in the drift departure from a flux surface. As this new source of driven current is a side effect of minority heating it comes without any additional economic cost to reactor power balance. The symmetric spectrum current driven for near Maxwellian minorities is evaluated by an adjoint method and found to be modest. However, minority heating typically results in strong non-Maxwellian features on minority distributions so it may be possible to drive a significantly larger co-current. A related evaluation is performed for alpha particles in a deuterium minority heated plasma with a tritium majority. The low density of the alphas tends to keep this driven symmetric spectrum current small, but at very high heating levels a significant co-current might be driven. Other mechanisms to drive co-current with a symmetric spectrum are discussed and estimated, including asymmetric electron drag and focusing of the applied minority heating radio frequency fields.

Properties of the electron mirror instability and its competition with the usually dominant whistler (electron cyclotron) instability driven by the electron perpendicular temperature anisotropy are investigated at the linear level using a Vlasov linear solver and at the nonlinear level using a two-dimensional full particle code. The simulation results show that the linearly subdominant electron mirror instability may compete at the nonlinear level with the whistler instability and may even eventually become the dominant mode that generates robust non-propagating sub-ion-scale coherent structures in the form of magnetic peaks.

Sufficiently strong electric fields in plasmas can accelerate charged particles to relativistic energies. In this paper we describe the dynamics of positrons accelerated in such electric fields, and calculate the fraction of created positrons that become runaway accelerated, along with the amount of radiation that they emit. We derive an analytical formula that shows the relative importance of the different positron production processes, and show that, above a certain threshold electric field, the pair production by photons is lower than that by collisions. We furthermore present analytical and numerical solutions to the positron kinetic equation; these are applied to calculate the fraction of positrons that become accelerated or thermalized, which enters into rate equations that describe the evolution of the density of the slow and fast positron populations. Finally, to indicate operational parameters required for positron detection during runaway in tokamak discharges, we give expressions for the parameter dependencies of detected annihilation radiation compared to bremsstrahlung detected at an angle perpendicular to the direction of runaway acceleration. Using the full leading-order pair-production cross-section, we demonstrate that previous related work has overestimated the collisional pair production by at least a factor of four.

In space and astrophysical plasmas, violent events or instabilities inject energy into turbulent motions at large scales. Nonlinear interactions among the turbulent fluctuations drive a cascade of energy to small perpendicular scales at which the energy is ultimately converted into plasma heat. Previous work with the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations has shown that this turbulent energy cascade is driven by the nonlinear interaction between counterpropagating Alfvén waves – also known as Alfvén wave collisions. Direct numerical simulations of weakly collisional plasma turbulence enables deeper insight into the nature of the nonlinear interactions underlying the turbulent cascade of energy. In this paper, we directly compare four cases: both periodic and localized Alfvén wave collisions in the weakly and strongly nonlinear limits. Our results reveal that in the more realistic case of localized Alfvén wave collisions (rather than the periodic case), all nonlinearly generated fluctuations are Alfvén waves, which mediates nonlinear energy transfer to smaller perpendicular scales.

Decaying homogeneous and isotropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) turbulence is investigated numerically at large Reynolds numbers thanks to the eddy-damped quasi-normal Markovian (EDQNM) approximation. Without any background mean magnetic field, the total energy spectrum $E$ scales as $k^{-3/2}$ in the inertial range as a consequence of the modelling. Moreover, the total energy is shown, both analytically and numerically, to decay at the same rate as kinetic energy in hydrodynamic isotropic turbulence: this differs from a previous prediction, and thus physical arguments are proposed to reconcile both results. Afterwards, the MHD turbulence is made imbalanced by an initial non-zero cross-helicity. A spectral modelling is developed for the velocity–magnetic correlation in a general homogeneous framework, which reveals that cross-helicity can contain subtle anisotropic effects. In the inertial range, as the Reynolds number increases, the slope of the cross-helical spectrum becomes closer to $k^{-5/3}$ than $k^{-2}$ . Furthermore, the Elsässer spectra deviate from $k^{-3/2}$ with cross-helicity at large Reynolds numbers. Regarding the pressure spectrum $E_{P}$ , its kinetic and magnetic parts are found to scale with $k^{-2}$ in the inertial range, whereas the part due to cross-helicity rather scales in $k^{-7/3}$ . Finally, the two $4/3$ rd laws for the total energy and cross-helicity are assessed numerically at large Reynolds numbers.

This work presents an energy criterion to define the halo of homogeneous and mismatched charged particle beams. In the simulations used in this work, the beam is considered to be azimuthally symmetric, initially cold and is confined by an external constant magnetic field inside a cylindrical conducting pipe. The energy criterion is established through the analysis of the beam energy distributions with time. The obtained results are in reasonable agreement with the past results that considered the beam phase-space topology, for many values of the beam initial envelope mismatch.
