As can be seen by the examples given below, design and planning problems related to ship-handling techniques increasingly rely on the use of ship-handling simulators.(i) Design and planning of port and harbour facilities with respect to the layout and dimensions of channels, turning basins, breakwaters, jetties, etc.(ii) Assessment of the ship manoeuvrability required to ensure safety in given port and harbour conditions.(iii) Establishment of proper ship-handling procedures required to ensure safety under given conditions.

Routing in a multimodal urban public transportation network, according to the user's preferences, can be considered as a multi-objective optimisation problem. Solving this problem is a complicated task due to the different and incompatible objective functions, various modes in the network, and the large size of the network. In this research, two optimisation algorithms are considered for solving this problem. The multi-colony and multi-pheromone Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) algorithms are two different modes of the Multi-Objective ACO (MOACO) algorithm. Moreover, according to the acquired information, the algorithms implemented in the public transportation network of Tehran consist of four modes. In addition, three objective functions have been simultaneously considered as the problem's objectives. The algorithms are run with different initial parameters and afterwards, the results are compared and evaluated based on the different obtained routes and with the aid of the convergence and repeatability tests, diversity and convergence metrics.

The presence of code Doppler and navigation bit sign transitions means that the acquisition of global positioning system (GPS) signals is difficult in weak signal environments where the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is significantly reduced. Post-correlation techniques are typically utilised to solve these problems. Despite the advantages of these techniques, the post-correlation techniques suffer from problems caused by the code Doppler and the navigation bit sign transitions. We present an improved semi-bit differential acquisition method which can improve the code Doppler and the bit sign transition issues in the post-correlation techniques. In order to overcome the phenomenon of navigation bit sign transitions, the proposed method utilises the properties of the navigation bit. Since each navigation bit takes as long as 20 ms, there would be 10 ms correlations duration integration time between the received signal and the local coarse/acquisition (C/A) code in which the navigation bit sign transitions will not occur. Consequently, this problem can be cancelled by performing 10 ms correlations in even and odd units separately. Compensation of the code Doppler is also accomplished by shifting the code phase of the correlation results. To validate the performance of our suggested method, simulations are performed based on three data sets. The results show that the quantity of required input SNR to detect at least four satellites in the proposed method is − 48·3 dB, compared with − 20 dB and − 9 dB, respectively, in traditional differential and non-coherent methods.

The objective of this study is to propose a methodology for assessing waterway traffic capacity in the Shanghai estuary of the Yangtze River. To achieve this objective, we first put forward the estimation method which utilises the minimum collision distance taking the dynamic ship domain into consideration. Considering possible effects caused by unknown external factors, the waterway traffic capacity is then represented by a probability distribution. Finally, we quantify the equivalent units of ships with various ship sizes as well as the effects of large-sized ships on the waterway traffic capacity. Results show that a large-sized ship is equivalent to more small-sized ships during the daytime period than at night. In addition, the deployment of large-sized ships could increase the waterway traffic capacity and such an increment highly depends on the increased proportion of large-sized ships in the waterway traffic.

The use of single-receiver single-satellite data validation parameters for numerical and graphical diagnostics of the multi-frequency observations is presented. This method validates Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements of a single receiver where data from each satellite are independently processed using a geometry-free observation model with a reparameterised form of the unknowns. The method is applicable to any GNSS with any number of frequencies. The diagnostic tools are based on checking agreement of characteristics of the validation test statistics against theory. The use of these diagnostics in static and kinematic modes is demonstrated using multiple-frequency data from three GNSS constellations; Global Positioning System (GPS), Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) and Galileo.

Although there have been improvements to the interface design of marine systems, there are still calls for increased usability as designers are blamed for systems that users find difficult to operate. This paper examines some of the issues and constraints that the designer faces when attempting to design a usable interface. The approach to designing that the developer may take is considered as well as more practical issues such as the limitations of using design principles. The importance of domain and context knowledge is stressed as well as other issues such as safety and culture. The paper concludes that design is a complex compromise but user involvement throughout the lifecycle can improve the ease of using marine systems.

Collective detection is a promising approach to positioning in a weak signal environment, in which the navigation solution is directly obtained by acquisition search in a multi-dimensional position and common clock bias uncertainty space. By combining the correlation values from multiple satellites and fully utilizing the coherence between them, the detectable C/N0 of individual satellites can be lowered. However, the lack of a computationally efficient optimization algorithm due to high dimensionality and complexity has hindered its application. A multi-resolution collective detection is therefore proposed to be a coarse-to-fine searching approach to solve for the position and common clock bias estimation. Although it reduces the computation time of collective detection, there is a gap in the efficiency study, which is the contribution of this research. The features of different levels of search in a multi-resolution algorithm are investigated. For a coarse search with large horizontal position step size, a smaller common clock bias step size is proposed instead of an averaging correlogram to reduce computation complexity as well as to obtain high time resolution. For the fine search with small horizontal space step size, a 3-D Dichotomous searching scheme is designed and applied to reduce the number of searching grids. Computer simulation results using experimental raw data are provided, to demonstrate the performance improvement against the conventional methods.

Signage design has been considered critically important for wayfinding, being a functional medium of delivering environmental information. Complex institutional environments have several factors affecting the wayfinding, including but not limited to the design of information signage and its visual preference. Visual preferences of information design in wayfinding signage vary, depending on the cultural and individual differences. This study explores the variance in design and visual preferences of wayfinding signage and its influencing elements. Responses through online questionnaire have been accumulated by the participants from Hong Kong and Pakistan based on their design and visual preference of campus wayfinding signage. Questions were asked related to the user preferences for signage colour if in line with the institutional visual identity, mono or multi-colour coding of information and its visual volume. In total, 170 university students and visitors participated in the exploratory study from the respective countries. The results demonstrated that participants of Hong Kong preferred inline colours of signage, along with mono or less colour coding and detailed information. While the other group preferred attractive colours with multi-colour coding and less detailed wayfinding information with pictograms. Individual differences concerning age, literacy level and gender were also computed, however trivial differences have been recorded. This study suggests the need for detailed cross-cultural investigation concerning elements of signage design and visual preference to identify the drivers for culturally consistent university signage.

This paper proposes the novel use of a weighted Interval Kalman Filter (wIKF) in a robust navigational approach for integration with the guidance and control systems of an uninhabited surface vehicle named Springer. The waypoint tracking capability of this technique is compared with that of one that uses a conventional Kalman Filter (KF) navigational design, when the model of the sensing equipment used by the filter is incorrect. In this case, the KF fails to predict correctly the vehicle's heading, which consequently impacts negatively on the performance of its integrated navigation, guidance and control (NGC). However, the use of a wIKF technique that is immune to this kind of erroneous modelling endows the integrated NGC system with better accuracy and efficiency in completing a mission.

Various studies suggest that the maritime industry will continue to face the challenge of seafarer shortages. Young seafarer turnover has become a serious issue that cannot be underestimated. This paper aims to identify the root causes of young seafarer attrition in China and explore relevant solutions. It collects information via semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA and least-significant difference are utilised for the variance analysis. The findings of the study show that occupational recognition and family responsibility are the two major factors contributing to young seafarers’ outflow. Chinese seafarers’ health status is another important factor that has received little attention. In addition, young seafarers of 31–35 years old have the most possibility of turnover, due to a number of reasons discussed in this paper. Age 40 or thereabouts is viewed as the watershed moment in a seafarer's career, so efforts should be made to help young seafarers pass through the hard period in their early thirties. This paper suggests that a clear career plan could be a potential solution to retain this backbone group as prospective senior officers.

A new threat detection criterion is described which provides a better match to the requirements than the well-known modified tau criterion for a civil air transport collision avoidance system. Experimental evidence is given to show that it also reduces the number of undesirable alerts.

We present a method for addressing probabilistic queries about the location of a vessel in the time interval between two position reports, such as from the Automatic Identification System (AIS). The heart of the method is the random generation of physically feasible paths connecting the two reports. The method empowers operators to answer probabilistic questions about any characteristic of the unknown true path. For illustrative purposes, we demonstrate the use of the method to identify which of several vessels is the most likely perpetrator, in a fictitious scenario in which illegal dumping of waste matter has taken place.

This paper presents an integrated INS (Inertial Navigation System) and camera-based navigation system. The camera-based navigation system provides position measurement aiding to the INS. This is an alternative to the more conventional GPS (Global Positioning System) aided INS. The system is intended for UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and long-range missiles. The basic principles of camera-based navigation are presented. The Kalman filter based integration of INS and camera-based navigation is discussed. Total system simulation results are shown together with INS simulations for comparison. Finally, a brief overview of factors that improve the navigation accuracy is presented.

Potential points of collision (PPC) and predicted areas of danger (PAD) are used in marine radars for assessment of risk of collision and of action to avoid collision. Both are useful concepts for automatic radar plotting aids (ARPA) which lead to a better understanding of collision avoidance. The PAD display, developed by Sperry Ltd, is a graphic form3 alternative to the vector display. More information can be obtained from the PAD display than from the vector display but additional knowledge is necessary for the mariner to correctly interpret and use the information. The IMO Resolution on ARPA Performance Standards emphasizes the need for deck officers to understand the basic principles involved in the use of the equipment. In this paper consideration will be given to the information obtained from the PAD display and a suggestion will be made for possible improvement of the shape of the PAD.

Dr. David Lewis has contributed two earlier papers to the Journal on Polynesian navigation: ‘Ara Moana’ in 1964, a theoretical examination of navigation methods, and ‘An experiment in Polynesian navigation’ in 1966, an account of his own voyage in the catamaran Rehu-Moana from Tahiti to New Zealand. The present paper presents the result of further research which included voyages between the islands with Polynesian navigators. A version of this paper, which was presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Australian Institute of Navigation in Sydney on 10 and 11 October 1969, has been published in Navigation (Sydney).

A conventional Differential GPS (DGPS) techniques-based velocity and acceleration method (named here as ‘DVA’) may be difficult to implement in the Antarctic as there is a sparse distribution of reference stations over Antarctica. Thus, in order to overcome the baseline limitations and to obtain highly accurate and reliable velocity and acceleration estimates for airborne gravimetry, a network-based velocity and acceleration determination approach (named here as ‘NVA’), which introduces a wide network of stations and is independent of precise clock information, is applied. Here its performance for velocity and acceleration determination is fully exploited by using Global Positioning System (GPS), GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou observations. Additionally, a standalone receiver-based method named ‘SVA’, which requires precise clock information, is also implemented for comparison. During static tests and a flight experiment over Antarctica, it was found that the NVA method yields more robust results than the SVA and DVA methods when applied to a wide area network. Moreover, the addition of GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou systems can increase the accuracy of velocity and acceleration estimates by 39% and 43% with NVA compared to a GPS-only solution.

This paper proposes a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)/ in-vehicle sensors fusion strategy for vehicle positioning in completely Global Positioning System (GPS)-denied environments such as tunnels. The strategy employs a two-step approach, namely, the calculation of the distances between the RFID tags and the reader, and then the global fusion estimation of vehicle position. First, a Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) algorithm is developed to obtain distance. Next a novel Federated Unscented Kalman Filter (FUKF) is designed to realise the global fusion. The decentralised federated filter is adopted to combine the data from RFID and in-vehicle sensors, and the UKF is employed to design a local filter since it has better ability to deal with a nonlinear problem than an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Due to the optimised layout of RFID tags and the application of the decentralised filter, the number of tags is reduced. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy are evaluated through experiments.

Spatial boundaries play an important role in defining spaces, structuring memory and supporting planning during navigation. Recent models of hierarchical route planning use boundaries to plan efficiently first across regions and then within regions. However, it remains unclear which structures (e.g. parks, rivers, major streets, etc.) will form salient boundaries in real-world cities. This study tested licensed London taxi drivers, who are unique in their ability to navigate London flexibly without physical navigation aids. They were asked to indicate streets they considered as boundaries for London districts or dividing areas. It was found that agreement on boundary streets varied considerably, from some boundaries providing almost no consensus to some boundaries consistently noted as boundaries. Examining the properties of the streets revealed that a key factor in the consistent boundaries was the near rectilinear nature of the designated region (e.g. Mayfair and Soho) and the distinctiveness of parks (e.g. Regent's Park). Surprisingly, the River Thames was not consistently considered as a boundary. These findings provide insight into types of environmental features that lead to the perception of explicit boundaries in large-scale urban space. Because route planning models assume that boundaries are used to segregate the space for efficient planning, these results help make predictions of the likely planning demands of different routes in such complex large-scale street networks. Such predictions could be used to highlight information used for navigation guidance applications to enable more efficient hierarchical planning and learning of large-scale environments.

Economic and technological development has increased the amount, density and complexity of maritime traffic, which has resulted in new challenges. One challenge is conforming to the distinct evasion manoeuvres required by vessels entering into near-collision situations (NCSs). Existing rules are vague and do not precisely dictate which, when and how collision avoidance manoeuvres (CAMs) should be executed. The automatic identification system (AIS) is widely used for vessel monitoring and traffic control. This paper presents an efficient, scalable method for processing large-scale raw AIS data using the closest point of approach (CPA) framework. NCSs are identified to create a database of historical traffic data. Important features describing CAMs are defined, estimated and analysed. Applications on a high-quality real-world data set show promising results for a subset of the identified situations. Future applications may play a significant role in the maritime regulatory framework, navigation protocol compliance evaluation, risk assessment, automatic collision avoidance, and algorithm design and testing for autonomous vessels.

The term ‘portolan chart’ first occurs in Italy in the thirteenth century, not long after this aid to navigation came into general use on board ship. The Italian word portolano, however, can best be translated as ‘pilot book’ or ‘sailing directions’, a different aid to navigation of which one example survives from the fourth century b.c., and pilot books are indeed still published in modern form by all seafaring nations. References by Herodotus in the History make it probable that such documents already existed in his time, and under the name of periplus they continued up to the sixth century a.d.; after which they do not appear again until the golden age of navigation in Italy and Catalonia in the late Middle Ages, apart from some much simpler early medieval types. The portolano or periplus is a description of ports, with information required by the navigator concerning anchorages, dangers threatening landfall and the winds and weather over wider areas. Commercial information was sometimes included, obviously also a matter of interest to the mariner who could read, though it may be doubted if many of them then could.

Italian portolan charts exist from almost the same period as the portolani, both of them denoted by the same word compasso, but while the pilot books have their modern successors the charts were only produced up to the beginning of the seventeenth century and are not really the forerunners of the modern sea chart.
