In this work, we find that the pressure-induced phase transition of InP from III-V semiconductor phase having zincblende (ZB) crystal structure to metallic phase having rocksalt (RS) structure occurs at a pressure of 8.56 GPa accompanied by an 18% volume collapse. It is found that the nearest In and P atoms bonded as covalent bond. Crystal space of ZB is just occupied by In-P tetrahedrons partly with many interstices, but that of RS is fulfilled by close-packed octahedrons entirely. With pressures, broadened energy band of antibonding state and the reduced density of states (DOS) of bonding state cause the weakening of tetrahedral In-P covalent bonds. And then, ZB is destroyed and rebuilt to RS structure. Some In-5s, In-5p, P-3p and a few P-3s move to unoccupied high energy level, across Fermi level, and migrate from valence band to conduction band, and then generate metallic properties. Furthermore, changes of covalent bond would cause evident variation of elastic properties on the {100} and {110} planes.

The effects of hydrogen on the structure of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses were investigated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Three lifetime components are identified, indicating the presence of three distinct size ranges for open volume defects in the glass. The concentration of the smallest sites identified as tetrahedral interstitial holes in the densely packed and the intermediate sites identified as flow defects, changes with hydrogen addition. The concentration of tetrahedral interstitial holes in Zr55Cu30Ni5Al10 alloys initially increases with the increase of hydrogen content. When Zr55Cu30Ni5Al10 alloys were prepared in Ar + 10%H2 atmospheres, the concentration of tetrahedral interstitial holes reaches a maximum, which may provide a more dense random-packed structure. For Zr57Al10Cu15.4Ni12.6Nb5alloys, the increase of hydrogen content causes a decrease in the concentration of tetrahedral interstitial holes and an increase in the concentration of flow defects.

A review is given on the use of ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) to the growth of films within the B–C–N system, both as monolithic and multilayer coatings. The films considered include elemental, binary, and ternary materials like pure carbon (diamond-like carbon), pure boron (B), boron nitrides (c‑BN, h‑BN, and BNx), boron carbides (B4C and BxC), carbon nitrides (CNx), and ternary BxCyNz. The use of non-reactive IBAD with argon ions and reactive IBAD with nitrogen ions is discussed in connection with control of the composition, physical and chemical sputtering, film density, internal stress, and promotion of metastable phases.

The divalent alkaline-earth metal hexaboride MB6 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures are promising n-type thermoelectric materials for high temperature power generation. Understanding fundamental physical and mechanical properties of these new nanostructures is critical for their future applications. Current work focuses on reliable study of mechanical properties of MB6 1D nanostructures by nanoindentation. Factors affecting the measured nanostructure-on-substrate system modulus, such as the stiffness of a supporting substrate, the width and cross section of a nanostructure, the interaction between a nanostructure and a substrate, were systematically studied by both experimental investigation and numerical simulation. The intrinsic modulus of a nanostructure, extracted from the measured system modulus, was determined between two bounds set by the receding contact and the perfect bond interaction between a nanostructure and a substrate, respectively. The extracted modulus increases as the width-to-thickness ratio of a nanostructure increases from 1 to 2.

Recent advances utilizing forced assembly multilayer coextrusion have led to the development of a new approach to study the structure–property relationships of confined polymer crystallization. Confinement of crystalline polymer materials in layer thicknesses ranging from hundreds to tens of nanometers thick, resulted in multilayer films possessing enhanced gas barrier properties. The enhanced gas barrier has been attributed to nanolayer confinement of the crystalline polymer resulting in a highly ordered intralayer lamellae orientation extending over micron or larger scale areas. Research into the confined crystallization mechanism of the multilayered polymer films has resulted in several material case studies as well as an understanding of the chemical and thermodynamic parameters that control the degree and rate of the confinement in multilayer polymer systems. This review highlights our recent studies on the confinement of poly(ethylene oxide), poly(ε-caprolactone), polypropylene, and poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymers in multilayered films.

Organic–inorganic interfaces exist in many natural or synthetic materials, such as mineral–protein interfaces found in bone and epoxy–silica interfaces found in concrete construction. Here, we report a model to predict the intrinsic strength between organic and inorganic materials, based on a molecular dynamics simulation approach combined with the metadynamics method, used to reconstruct the free energy surface between attached and detached states of the bonded system and scaled up to incorporate it into a continuum model. We apply this technique to model an epoxy–silica system that primarily features nonbonded and nondirectional van der Waals and Coulombic chemical interactions. The intrinsic strength between epoxy and silica derived from the molecular level is used to predict the structural behavior of epoxy–silica interface at the macroscopic length scale by invoking a finite element approach using a cohesive zone model which shows a good agreement with existing experimental results.

Many-body perturbation theory is applied to compute the quasiparticle electronic structures and the optical absorption spectra (including excitonic effects) for several transparent conducting oxides (TCOs). We discuss HSE+G0W0 results (based on the hybrid exchange-correlation functional by Heyd, Scuseria, and Ernzerhof, and quasiparticle corrections from approximating the electronic self energy as the product of the Green’s function and the screened Coulomb interaction) for band structures, fundamental band gaps, and effective electron masses of magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, cadmium oxide, tin dioxide, tin oxide, indium (III) oxide and silicon dioxide. The Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE) is solved to account for excitonic effects in the calculation of the frequency-dependent absorption coefficients. We show that the HSE+G0W0 approach and the solution of the BSE are very well suited to describe the electronic structure and the optical properties of various TCOs in good agreement with experiment.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs)-doped polystyrene (PS) microspheres with high luminescence were prepared using a self-assembly approach. Hydrophobic CdSe/ZnS QDs were first carboxylized by ligand exchange using mercaptocarboxylic acid. PS microspheres were separately encapsulated with polyethyleneimine via electrostatic interactions and then adsorbed with the carboxyl QDs to form QDs-doped microspheres. We then characterized the combinations using optical, electrical, and mechanical approaches and obtained the following findings: (i) microspheres can be fully coated by QD nanoparticles with a coverage rate of 1.0 pmole/cm2, in which QDs were evenly distributed on the surfaces; (ii) the anchored QDs exhibited similar optical property as they performed in isolated suspension; and (iii) the fluorescence of QDs-doped microspheres remained intact after stressed by ultrasound-induced cavitation, demonstrating the robustness of interactions between QDs and microspheres. The self-assembly approach developed in this study offered a facile and controllable strategy for preparation of QDs-encoded microparticles with high luminescence and stability.

In this article, the sol-gel methodology was used for coating an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer prepared by the rapid prototyping technology with a colloid containing the europium III dipicolinic complex, which presents high emission when excited in the ultraviolet region. Either acid or base was used for treatment of the ABS polymer, with a view to activating its surface. The thermal analysis evidenced a residual mass after 600 °C, which indicated that the coating adhered to the substrate. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the structure of the ABS polymer was not affected by the sol-gel treatment. The large band centered at 287 nm, ascribed to ligand-metal charge transfer, can be used to excite the europium III dipicolinic complex in the ultraviolet C and ultraviolet B regions. The emission appears in the characteristic red region of the electromagnetic spectrum. These results indicate that the obtained material is a candidate for use as ultraviolet sensor.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes/Pd nanoparticles (CNT/Pd) were prepared by different four synthesis techniques. After the chemical oxidation of CNTs, the infrared absorption data indicated the existence of several functional groups loaded on the CNTs surfaces. The first Pd deposition technique went through the processes of Sn sensitization and Pd deposition on the functionalized surfaces of CNTs. The second method was Pd deposition by polyol process. The third method was Pd deposition using hydrazine in acidic media. In the fourth method, fourth generation poly(amidoamine) dendrimer and sodium borohydride were used as an intermediator between Pd and the surfaces of CNTs and as a reducing agent of the palladium chloride, respectively. It was observed from transmission electron microscope analysis of the produced CNT/Pd nanoparticles that the Pd particles on the CNTs prepared by the fourth method had the smallest average particle size of 3 nm. The Pd contents in the produced CNT/Pd nanocomposite powders were determined by thermogravimetric analysis.

Synchrotron time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering studies were carried out on extruded sheets of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) under tension. Stress–strain traces obtained simultaneously exhibited a double yield behavior. LLDPE initially exhibited lamellar morphology with a long period of 21.5 nm. Initial deformation increased the long period due to flow-induced crystallization. Between the first and second yield points, the lamellae were axially deformed by a slip process toward the tensile direction; off-meridional scattering was produced. In the second yield point region, there was a gradual rotation and thinning of the off-meridional scattering indicating that a shear process was destroying the lamellae. Simultaneously, amorphous scattering arise due to microvoids. Second, a weak meridional scattering was also produced. Strikingly, further deformation in the second yield region (SYR) increased the meridional long period suggesting a recrystallization process. From the cold-drawing region the long period decreased monotonically. The results suggest a melting and recrystallization process in the SYR.

Electrophoretic displays (EPDs) are attracting a great deal of academic and commercial interest due to the advantages of both electronic displays and conventional paper. The key materials for EPD application of microcapsules are the electrophoretic particles and the capsule wall enwrapping the electrophoretic suspension inside. Here, black and white electrophoretic particles with low density and good dispersity such as titanium dioxide, carbon black, and Cu2Cr2O3 were prepared by surface modification of the pigments. The preparation and properties of the gelatin-based microcapsules prepared by complex coacervation methods are also summarized. The microcapsules have transparent and elastic walls of compact structure, which endows them with good barrier properties and thermal stability for EPD application. EPD prototype devices based on the obtained microcapsules were prepared and could be driven at 9 V.

A series of layered n-ABO3-doped Aurivillius structures Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO) thin films are synthesized on (001) SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition, where n represents the number of ABO3 perovskite. X-ray diffraction substantiates that these films have expected layered Aurivillius structures. Furthermore, the microstructure of these samples is “systematically” characterized by transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the structure of n-STO-doped BTO becomes unstable when n is equal to 3, as revealed by the occurrence of intergrowth. Similar phenomenon is observed in n-LaFeO3-doped BTO; the layered Aurivillius structure is totally collapsed in the case of n as high as 2.5. In contrast, 3-BiFeO3-doped BTO still keeps perfect Aurivillius structure. The above-observed structural stabilities of these materials are explained by the theoretical formation enthalpy calculated by the density functional theory. This work provides the necessary information to explore the multifunctionality based on Aurivillius n-ABO3–BTO oxides.

Structure and phase transitions of (1 − y)((1 − x)Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3–xBi1/2K1/2TiO3)–yK0.5Na0.5NbO3 (x; y) piezoceramics (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4; 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.05) were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, neutron diffraction, temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The local crystallographic structure at room temperature (RT) does not change by adding K0.5Na0.5NbO3 to Bi1/2Na1/2TiO3–xBi1/2K1/2TiO3 for x = 0.2 and 0.4. The average crystal structure and microstructure on the other hand develop from mainly long-range polar order with ferroelectric domains to short-range order with polar nanoregions displaying a more pronounced relaxor character. The (0.1; 0) and (0.1; 0.02) compositions exhibit monoclinic Cc space group symmetry, which transform into Cc + P4bm at 185 and 130 °C, respectively. This high temperature phase is stable at RT for the morphotropic phase boundary compositions of (0.1; 0.05) and all compositions with x = 0.2. For the compositions of (0.1; 0) and (0.1; 0.02), local structural changes on heating are evidenced by Raman; for all other compositions, changes in the long-range average crystal structure were observed.

Nanopillars and nanocoils fabricated by chemical vapor deposition using a focused ion beam were used to estimate bending and torsional rigidities under infinitesimal deformation and to investigate nonlinear large deformation behaviors. For the pillars, we performed bending tests using a unique double-cantilever specimen, which was made by joining two pillars together using focused electron beam deposition in a scanning electron microscope. The reproducible load–deflection curves, which were not severely disturbed by the ambiguous chuck condition of the specimens, indicated that the pillar deformation resistance decreased after the linear response (called softening), and it was dependent on the pillar diameter and the ratio of diameter to length. However, all pillars became extremely hardened at large deformation. At diameters of less than 300 nm, and at diameter/length ratios of over 10−2, this nanopillar size effect (characterized as softening) was consistently observed.

The thermodynamic La–Sr–Mn–Cr–O oxide database is obtained as an extension of thermodynamic descriptions of oxide subsystems using the calculation of phase diagrams approach. Concepts of the thermodynamic modeling of solid oxide phases are discussed. Gibbs energy functions of SrCrO4, Sr2.67Cr2O8, Sr2CrO4, and SrCr2O4 are presented, and thermodynamic model parameters of La–Sr–Mn–Chromite perovskite are given. Experimental solid solubilities and nonstoichiometries in La1−xSrxCrO3−δ and LaMn1−xCrxO3−δ are reproduced by the model. The presented oxide database can be used for applied computational thermodynamics of traditional lanthanum manganite cathode with Cr-impurities. It represents the fundament for extensions to higher orders, aiming on thermodynamic calculations in noble symmetric solid oxide fuel cells.

The isocyanate-functionalized silica nanoparticles were chemically incorporated into the polyurethane (PU) during the synthesis of flexible PU foam from polypropylene glycol and toluene diisocyanate following the one-shot method with water as the blowing agent. Chemical incorporations of silica nanoparticles augmented hardness, initial modulus, and strength for tensile and compression loading. As results, shape fixity, shape recovery, and strain energy storage significantly increased with reduced hysteresis loss. It was found that the chemically incorporated silica particles effectively reinforce the PUs with improved dispersion and act as multifunctional cross-links, elastic energy storage, and relaxation retarder, which are beyond the conventional reinforcing filler. The maximum increases of dynamic properties and shape memory performances with 2% silica are an indication that the chemical incorporation is also limited by particle aggregations, though it appears at higher content than the simple blend.

Creep during loading and recovery phases after load removal are studied using a homemade experimental device that allows us to record in situ the evolution of the true contact area and of the residual imprint versus the time. Indentation tests are performed using a spherical indenter with a tip radius R = 400 μm onto amorphous polymeric surface poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) at different contact durations (10–105 s) and controlled temperatures varying between −20 and 100 °C. Original experimental results are presented about the true evolution of the contact area during creep and recovery phases. An interesting experimental parameter, defined by the ratio a(t)/a0, (with a(t), evolution of the contact radius with creep or relaxation time, and a0, the initial value of the contact radius at the end of the loading phase or at the end of the creep phase) has been introduced to describe the evolution of imposed strain during indentation. As a function of the temperature and of the initial average strain imposed at the end of the loading phase, some nonlinear phenomena can be observed. Using two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element modeling, assuming only viscoelastic behavior, creep and recovering phases during indentation have been reproduced. The simulation results indicate that (i) the test is mainly controlled by the imposed strain and not by the contact pressure, and (ii) some plasticity could appear in the contact zone and as a function of the location and the size of the volume where the strain is maximal, the recovery is more or less limited.

In spite of its large lattice mismatch, Bi grows epitaxially in (111) orientation and almost free of defects on Si substrates. On Si(111), the Bi film is under compressive strain of less than 2% and shows a 6–7 registry to the Si(111)-(7 × 7) substrate. On Si(001), the compressive lattice strain of 2.3% results in the formation of an array of misfit dislocations with a periodicity of 20 nm. We studied the cooling process of ultrathin bismuth films deposited on Si(111) and Si(001) substrates upon excitation with short laser pulses. With ultrafast electron diffraction, we determined the thermal boundary conductance σK from the exponential decay of the transient film temperature. Within the error bars of 7%, the experimentally determined thermal boundary conductances are the same for both substrates and thus independent of the presence of a periodic array of misfit dislocations and the different substrate orientation.

This paper presents the results of a combined experimental, theoretical, and computational study of the adhesion between suspended polymeric films and a substrate in a model drug-eluting stent. Atomic force microscope is used to measure the pull-off force between the polymer and the substrate. The adhesion energy was then obtained from the measured pull-off forces and adhesion theories. Subsequently, the adhesion energy was incorporated into interfacial fracture mechanics zone model that was used to determine mode mixity dependence of the interfacial fracture toughness. The mode mixity-dependent fracture toughness conditions were then integrated into finite element models that were used to compute the critical push-out force of the suspended polymeric films. The predicted push-out forces were in good agreement with the results obtained from the experiments.
