Temperate glacier ice is neither dry nor impermeable, as the standard theory of glacier sliding assumes. This fact leads to the already published concept of locally stress-controlled temperatures. Why the temperature is determined by the highest principal pressure, why the microscopic stress equals more or less the macroscopic one, and why water may flow in the capillary network even when water lenses at grain boundaries are freezing is explained. The new concept is applied to ice sliding on a hard bed having a sine profile, without cavitation. First, the stress field for a Newtonian viscous material and a vanishing roughness are used; next, an improved one, that takes into account the non-linear viscosity of ice and the finite amplitude of the micro-relief. It appears that water migrates from the stoss sides of the bumps to the lee sides within a bottom layer of thickness hw. Moreover, there is less ice melting at the sole on the former ones than ice accretion on the latter, a fact that yields a trend of ice accretion at the glacier sole. It is balanced by internal melting near the bed and water oozing at the interface from the soaked ice. Consequently, a thin layer of accreted regelation ice with a constant mean thickness hi should exist at the interface. Modelling realistically mountain glaciers, hw ∼ 20 cm and hi ∼ 3.5 cm are found.

Digital airborne-radar data were collected during the 1988–89 Antarctic field season in six gridded blocks covering the upstream parts of Ice Streams A, Β and C. An automated processing procedure was developed for picking onset times, converting travel times, interpolating missing data, converting pressure-transducer readings, correcting navigational drift, performing cross-over analysis and zeroing remanent cross-over errors. Cross-over analysis was used to remove the effects of temporal variations in atmospheric pressure and to estimate errors. Interpolation between flight lines was carried out using the Kriging method. Surface elevation was referred to the Rapp Set A geoid by tying the gridded surface to satellite-surveyed ground stations, using a planar-model fit.

Maps of surface elevation, ice thickness and bottom topography with standard-error estimates of 4–9 m for surface elevation and 30–60 m for ice thickness and bottom topography were produced. These maps show that the locations of the ice streams are not clearly reflected in either the surface or basal topography, so are presumably controled by basal or internal conditions, that there is no clearly demarcated transition zone between sheet flow and streaming flow, that there is no clear cut evidence for the capture of the catchment of Ice Stream C by Ice Stream B, but that Ice Stream Β does drain virtually the entire region between the lateral boundaries of Ice Streams A and C.

Monthly ice ablation was measured at the margin of the Greenland ice sheet for June, July and August over 7 years (1980–86). The total winter ablation (September-May) has also been measured, and a simple ablation-temperature model used to assign ablation values to individual months. Under the present climate, the most ablation occurred in June-August (on average 81% of annual ablation), moderate ablation took place in May and September (17%) and very little ablation occurred in October-April (2%). The effect of climate change on ice ablation is simulated using the ablation model to recalculate ablation for higher temperatures. Summer ice ablation increases with temperature in the model, but there is proportionally greater increase for May and September, whereas the period from October to April is presently so cold that even a temperature rise of +5 °C will hardly increase ablation. The difference in annual ice ablation caused by future climate change will therefore depend upon the seasonal distribution of the temperature change. Changes in precipitation and accumulation will further modify the seasonal variation of ablation.

Classical mixture concepts are the appropriate vehicle for describing the dynamics of ice masses containing some water. We review and derive, respectively, the theoretical formulations of cold, polythermal and temperate ice masses, emphasize the peculiarities of the model equations and point to difficulties that were encountered with the proposed models. The focus is both on the adequate physical motivation of the models and the consistency of their mathematical representation. The paper also has a tutorial character.

As usual, cold ice is treated as a single-component incompressible heat-conducting viscous fluid, while two different models are presented for temperate ice. When it arises in a polythermal ice mass, the water content is small and a simple diffusive model for the moisture content suffices. This diffusive model is further simplified by taking its appropriate limit, when the moisture diffusivity tends to zero. Temperate ice in a wholly temperate — Alpine — glacier is treated as a two-phase flow problem, i.e. the momentum-balance laws of both constituents ice and water are properly accounted for. Such Darcy-type models are suggested because the water arises in a greater proportion; so its dynamic role can no longer be ignored.

The constituent ice is treated as an incompressible non-linearly viscous isotropic body with constitutive properties similar to those of cold ice. The interstitial water is a density-preserving ideal or perfect fluid. The two interact with an interaction force that is proportional to the “porosity” and the seepage velocity. Internal melting that arises will lead to a generalization of the familiar Darcy law.

When water is present, the boundary and transition conditions across internal singular surfaces take special, more complicated forms and involve statements on drainage to the base. These conditions are also discussed in detail.

A simple model is developed to simulate the isotopic fractionation which accompanies Weertman regelation at the bed of temperate-based glaciers. The fractionation equations of Jouzel and Souchez (1982) are applied to multiple refreezing events over measured glacier-bed profiles, and mass balance is maintained as the basal ice and meltwater produced at one bedrock hummock enter the next. Simulation results indicate that undeformed regelation ice layers are on the order of millimetres to centimetres thick, often being completely melted at the stoss face of certain hummocks and exceptionally reaching a thickness in excess of 10 cm. Neither the internal morphology nor the isotopic composition of these layers is constant, but both vary down-glacier in accordance with bedrock configuration. A glacier-wide fractionation process is identified whereby heavy isotopes are preferentially removed from the basal meltwater film and incorporated into the basal ice. This process might go some way to explaining the anomalously “light” isotopic composition measured in base-flow waters leaving some glaciers. Vertical isotope profiles through undeformed basal ice layers are reconstructed and show that significant isotopic excursions can occur at a scale of millimeteres, while the range of isotopic compositions within such multi-layered regelation ice is greater than that which would occur in ice produced by a single refreezing event. In circumstances where the regelation system is disrupted by removal of film waters into a network of linked cavities, it is found that the remaining basal ice may be significantly enriched in heavy isotopes relative to the composition of the initial mass inputs to the system. Heavy isotope enrichment of this magnitude and consideration of the thickness of the basal ice layers concerned may explain the absence of recorded basal ice samples heavy enough to have been formed in equilibrium with subglacial precipitates sampled at one of the sites (Glacier de Tsanfleuron) and reported in an earlier paper.

The study of the phase of reflections of Ρ waves off the base of Ice Streams Β and C, and Ridge BC, indicates that acoustic impedances of the beds of both ice streams vary laterally. In some places, the impedance is higher than in the ice (a high-impedance bed) and in some places it is less (a low-impedance bed). The estimated impedances in a dilated bed (porosity 0.4) and in a model of the lowermost ice that takes into account the relatively low P-wave speed in ice at or very near the melting point are nearly the same. Whether the impedance in the bed is greater or less than in the ice could depend on minor changes in the nature of the sediments composing the bed, or the physical state of the bed (e.g. porosity) that could occur laterally. Lateral variations of this kind provide a ready explanation for the observations on Ice Stream B. The bed under a substantial part of Ice Stream C that exhibits a low-impedance bed also must be dilated. The evaluation of the state of the bed under the rest of Ice Stream C and on Ridge BC requires further analysis, which is in progress.

The net mass balance (1986/87–1989/90) was calculated for a small cirque glacier in the Italian Alps (Ghiacciaio della Sforzellina, 0.42 k m2, Ortles–Cevedale Group). Four annual mass balances are presented here. All four balances were negative (mean value: –0.90 m year−1), with a maximum deficit of –1.16 m year−1 in 1989–90. The climatic conditions (which are analyzed using data from the S. Caterina Valfurva Station) consisted of a succession of cold, dry winters with little snowfall. Frontal-variation data available since 1925 show a constant retreat until 1966, followed by a brief advance period which has already terminated.

The mechanical properties of ice are strongly affected by crystal texture and c-axis alignment. In this paper, we develop a general quantitative method for analysis of uniaxial crystal-orientation data. These data are represented as unit vectors from the origin with end points on the surface of a unit sphere. An orthogonal least-squares error measure is used to develop equations that define the closest plane and line through the data. The resulting eigenvalue problem is identical to that obtained by other investigators using different methods. However, here we identify an implicit assumption in the method, and observe that the error measure represents physical distance and quantifies the goodness of fit to the data of idealized structures. Also, a method is developed to transform the data and the results for viewing on Schmidt nets drawn in the best plane and the predominant basal plane of a sample, in addition to the standard xy-plane. Applications of the analysis to sea-ice samples include both numerical and Schmidt-net presentations of results.

Control methods are recommended as an efficient means to estimate undetermined physical parameters and boundary conditions and, in so doing, to improve the fidelity of a given ice-sheet flow model to specific ice-sheet velocity observations. To accomplish this task, the underlying dynamics of the model are inverted. This permits model-tuning adjustments to be represented explicitly in terms of model/observation misfit. Advantages of the control method over trial-and-error techniques in common use are: (1) it is readily automated with little additional programming effort, (2) the tuning parameters and boundary conditions it achieves are assured to give the best possible fit between model and observation, and (3) it quantifies the uncertainty of tuning parameters and boundary conditions in situations where they are not uniquely determined.

Numerous features of glaciological significance appear on two adjoining SPOT High Resolution Visible (HRV) images that cover the onset region of Ice Stream B, Antarctica. Many small-scale features, such as crevasses and drift plumes, have been observed in aerial photography. Subtle large-scale features, such as long flow traces that have not been mapped previously, are clear in the satellite imagery. Newly discovered features include ladder-like runners and rungs within certain shear margins, flow traces that are parallel to ice flow, unusual crevasse patterns and flow traces originating within shear margins.

The debris-rich ice from the bottom 6 m of the 82 m deep CAROLINE (Coastal Antarctic Record of Last Interglacial Natural Environment) ice core reaching bedrock, and from five 2 m long surface cores at Moraine Prudhomme in Terre Adélie (Antarctica) is described and compared to debris-laden ice from the core-drilling site DIO. Isotopic, total-gas content, CO2 concentration and SEM investigations of embedded particles, together with ice textures and fabrics, rule out “pressure-melting” regelation around bed obstacles or “freezing-on” as possible mechanisms for the debris entrainment at the ice-bedrock interface. It is suggested that the debris entrapment by purely mechanical means (e.g. shearing) is an efficient process in forming basal ice layers (BIL) at sub-freezing temperatures. This process might be dominant at the margin of the Antarctic ice sheet where no ice shelf exists and where a ramp terminus or a buttressing coastal relief induces compressive flow.

Observations of temperature maxima at about 10 cm depth in cold Antarctic snow during summer have previously been explained by proposing that solar heating is distributed with depth whereas thermal infrared cooling is localized at the surface (the “solid-state greenhouse”). An increase in temperature from the surface to 10 cm depth (ΔΤ ≈ 4 K) found by Rusin (1961) on the Antarctic Plateau was successfully reproduced by Schlatter (1972) in a combined radiative-transfer and heat-transfer model. However, when we improve the model’s spectral resolution, solving for solar radiative fluxes separately in 118 wavelength bands instead of just one “average” wavelength, ΔΤ shrinks to 0.2 Κ and moves toward the surface, indicating that the solid-state greenhouse is largely an artifact of inadequate spectral resolution. The agreement between Schlatter’s broad-band model and Rusin’s measurement suggests that the measurement is inaccurate, perhaps due to solar heating of the buried thermistors. Similar broad-band models which have been applied to the icy surface of Jupiter’s satellite Europa are also shown to overestimate the solid-state greenhouse by a factor of about 6.

The reason that the solid-state greenhouse effect is insignificant in the case of Antarctic snow is that the wavelengths which do penetrate deeply into snow (visible light) are essentially not absorbed and are scattered back to the surface, whereas the wavelengths that are absorbed by snow (near-infrared) are absorbed in the top few millimeters.

The conditions needed to obtain a significant solid-state greenhouse are examined. The phenomenon becomes important if the scattering coefficient is small (as in blue ice) or if the thermal conductivity is low (as in low-density snow, such as near-surface depth hoar).

Low-frequency surface-based radar-profiling experiments on Ice Streams Β and C, West Antarctica, have yielded high-resolution images which depict folding of the internal layers that can aid in the interpretation of ice-stream dynamics. Unlike folding seen in most earlier radar studies of ice sheets, the present structures have no relationship to bedrock topography and show tilting of their axial fold planes in the flow direction. Rather than being standing waves created by topography or local variations in basal shear stress, the data show that these folds originate upstream of the region of streaming flow and are advected into the ice streams. The mechanism for producing folds is hypothesized to be changes in the basal boundary conditions as the ice makes the transition from inland ice to ice-stream flow. Migration of this transition zone headward can then cause folds in the internal layering to be propagated down the ice streams.

Four boreholes in Storglaciären, a small valley glacier in northern Sweden, were inspected with a video camera. In two of the boreholes, the apparent glacier bed was filmed. In one borehole, the bed was found to be composed of soft sediment, but in the other it consisted of bedrock. In the latter, the camera moved 5.6 mm relative to the bed during an 80 min period. The recorded camera movement showed a background motion which is in the expected range of basal sliding. Superimposed on the background motion, a jerky motion of a high-speed spike was found. The jerky motion is interpreted as a stress release induced by local topography at the ice–bed interface.

Individual variables found to be significant from a correlation analysis are analyzed as a function of probability of avalanching for data from Kootenay Pass, British Columbia. The analysis is compared with a similar study for data from Alta, Utah, U.S.A. The results show that the variable significance is very similar for the two areas. Primary variables include: snowfall rate, weight of new snow, water equivalent of new precipitation, total storm snow and new snow depth. Secondary variables include wind speed and direction, and new-snow density.

Satellite imagery is used as a basis to review and critique the results of studies at the mouths of Ice Streams Β and C and Crary Ice Rise. In many cases, these past analyses are extended by taking advantage of the broad coverage within each image. New perspectives are provided by the image data and some longstanding controversies are resolved. The grounding line is easily delineated and mapped in areas covered by imagery. Extensive areas of grounded ice with complex patterns of flow stripes are identified on the flanks of Crary Ice Rise. The imagery also allows a corrected map of surface topography in the vicinity of the Downstream Β camp. New questions are posed by hitherto unseen features. Data from the IGY traverse of the Ross Ice Shelf in 1957 are included to demonstrate that large changes have occurred in the past almost 30 years in the area upstream of Crary Ice Rise. These changes include modifications in the surface topography, elimination of crevasses and increases in the ice thickness by approximately 60 m.

Analyses of the first aircraft multi-frequency, Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data acquired over the southwestern Greenland ice sheet are presented. Data were collected on 31 August 1989 by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory SAR using the NASA DC-8 aircraft. Along with curvilinear patterns associated with large-scale morphologic features such as crevasses, lakes and streams, frequency and polarization dependencies are observed in the P-, L-and C-band image products. Model calculations that include firn grain-size and volumetric water content suggest that tonal variations in and between the images are attributable to large-scale variations in the snow-and ice-surface characteristics, especially snow wetness. In particular, systematic trends in back-scatter strength observed at C-band across regions of changing snow wetness are suggestive of a capability to delineate boundaries between snow facies. Ice lenses and ice pipes are the speculated cause for similar trends in P-band back-scatter. Finally, comparison between SEASAT SAR data collected in 1978 and these airborne data collected in 1989 indicate a remarkable stability of surface patterns associated with the locations of supraglacial lake and stream systems.

The relationship of glacier response due to mass-balance changes is of fundamental importance when climate variations are to be understood. In this paper, two aspects of the problem are analyzed from field data: (1) advance/retreat of the glacier terminus due to changes in mass balance, and (2) cross-correlation of mass-balance data from two glaciers in the same climate zone. The results show: (1) the terminus can respond quickly in accordance with expected minimum time-scale, and (2) two glaciers in the same general climate zone may have very different yearly mass balance and advance/retreat behaviour. This latter result indicates the importance of local climate variations.

Five short-pulse radar profiles were run across the edge of inactive Ice Stream C, one of the “Ross” ice streams that flows from the West Antarctic inland ice sheet into the Ross Ice Shelf. Scatter from buried crevasses, which we presume were at the surface of the ice stream when it was active, creates hyperbolae on the radar records. A density-depth curve and local accumulation rates were used to convert the picked travel times of the apices of the hyperbolae into stagnation ages for the ice stream. Stagnation ages are 130 ± 25 year for the three profiles farthest downstream and marginally less (100 ± 30 year) for the fourth. The profile farthest upstream shows a stagnation age of only ~30 year. We believe that these results indicate a “wave” of stagnation propagating at a diminishing speed upstream from the mouth of the ice stream, and we suggest that the stagnation process involves a drop in water pressure at the bed due to a conversion from sheet flow to channelized water flow.

The trapping of bubbles of air in polar ice has provided a unique record of past atmospheric composition. However, the interpretation of measured concentrations depends on the statistics of the trapping process. Measurements of trace atmospheric constituents whose concentrations are changing steadily can be interpreted in terms of an “effective age” of the gas which differs from the age of the ice by a delay which corresponds to the mean trapping time. The statistics of bubble trapping can be modelled as a percolation model which is one of a class of models whose transitions are characterized by large critical fluctuations. These critical fluctuations cause an intrinsic sample-to-sample variability in the delay time and thus in the effective age. Monte Carlo simulations using a lattice model of the firn are presented, showing the effect of finite sample size on the age distribution of trapped gas. For samples containing more than about 103–104 bubbles, the simulations indicate that the range of variability is small compared to the average duration of the trapping process.
