Quantitative ice-core paleoclimatology must account for post-depositional processes, such as vapor-phase diffusion in the firn. After pore close-off, diffusion continues to smooth the stable-isotope records δ18O and δD that are eventually recovered from the ice, leading to the loss of high-frequency information. Johnsen and others (1997) found much higher rates of diffusive smoothing in the Greenland Icecore Project (GRIP) Holocene ice than would be predicted by diffusion through solid ice alone, and Nye (1998) argued that transport through liquid veins might explain this apparent excess diffusion. However, the analysis of Johnsen and others (2000) indicates that the required vein dimensions may be unrealistically large. Here, we model the diffusion of stable isotopes in polycrystalline ice and show that the predictions of Nye (1998) and those of Johnsen and others (2000) actually represent two end-members in a range of potential behavior. Our model determines which of these asymptotic regimes more closely resembles the prevailing conditions and quantifies the role of pre-melted liquid in the smoothing of isotopic signals. The procedure thereby ties together the two approaches and provides a rostrum for accurate analysis of isotope records and paleotemperature reconstructions.

Snow and weather conditions typical of exceptional cycles of fresh-snow avalanches in the northern Alps are investigated using the numerical avalanche-hazard forecasting procedure of Météo-France. Sensitivity tests are performed on the events of February 1999 in the Chamonix France region, and resulting snowpack instability modeled at the massif scale is compared using adapted new indices and maps. Our results complete conclusions of earlier observation-based studies by providing new insights into the snow and weather conditions of February 1999. The large avalanches mainly resulted from large and very unstable fresh-snow accumulations. Moreover, the snowpack instability was increased locally by wind transport of light and fresh snow in February. The mechanical weaknesses resulting from the weather conditions prior to February were a key factor in explaining the unusual volumes of these avalanches. This study suggests that the operational numerical SAFRAN/Crocus/ MÉPRA (SCM) chain provides reliable forecasts of extreme new-snow avalanche situations at the massif scale, but that local-scale simulations are still needed to improve the efficiency of risk mitigation and civil protection policies.

During the decade prior to its 1982–83 surge, Variegated Glacier experienced progressive changes in geometry and velocity. It thickened in the upper 60% and thinned in the lower 40% of its 20 km length. Thickness changes were up to 20%. Annual velocity increased by up to 500%, reaching a maximum of 0.7 m d−1 in the year before surge onset. Amplitude of seasonal variation in velocity increased up to 0.3 m d−1 by 1978, but did not increase markedly after that. The changes in velocity were larger than predicted from changes in deformation rate caused by changes in shear stress and depth. This anomalous velocity was especially large after 1978 in the zone of thickening on the upper glacier. If it is assumed to arise from basal sliding, the inferred pattern of sliding shows qualitative features consistent with a direct effect from basal shear stress and an inverse effect from effective normal stress. A drop in effective normal stress in a zone of decreasing surface slope up-glacier from the largest thickness increase may have been significant in the initiation of surge motion in 1982.

To investigate factors influencing nucleation of air clathrate hydrates in polar ice sheets, we have performed high-resolution mapping of the distributions of soluble impurities, air bubbles and air- hydrate crystals versus depth in the Dome Fuji Antarctic ice. Significant correlation observed between the concentrations of air inclusions and impurities in ice along with frequent occurrence of impurities inside hydrate crystals suggest that micro-inclusions promote hydrate nucleation in the ice matrix. Our observations also show that the diffusive macroscopic-scale redistribution of air constituents in ice in the bubble-hydrate transition zone is controlled by the original sedimentary layering of soluble impurities acting as nucleation helpers. The results of this study are important for the correct interpretation of high-resolution gas analyses of ice cores and for better understanding the global bubble-to-hydrate transformation process in polar ice sheets.

The rate of strain tensor at a point on the surface of a glacier may be determined by setting up a number of stakes in a pattern and measuring the rate of change of the distances between them. A suitable pattern consists of four stakes at the corners of a square with one stake at the center. Five such patterns were used on Austerdalsbreen, Norway, in August 1956. The problem is to deduce the best values of the 3 independent components of the strain-rate tensor from the 8 measured quantities, and, for this purpose, a least-squares method, invented by Bond for the analogous problem in crystal physics, is used. The principal strain-rates are found to within about ±0.005 yr.−1 and their directions relative to the stake system to within about ±0.5°. The directions and magnitudes of the principal stresses are then deduced from Glen’s flow law and a suitable general theory. The directions of the principal strain-rates are in good agreement with the directions of the crevasses, but the experiment is inconclusive on the question of the magnitude of the stress needed to form a crevasse.

A sedimentary sequence of till overlying a gravel aquifer was instrumented with water-pressure transducers prior to a small, anticipated surge of the margin of the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull in Iceland. The records of water pressure at each transducer site show a well-defined temporal sequence of hydraulic regimes that reflect the changing recharge of surface-derived meltwater, the pressure drop along the drainage pathway and the pattern of ice loading. The poroelastic and water-pressure response of glacially overridden sediments to the recharge rate is determined in the frequency domain through an analytic solution. This permits the in situ conductivity, compressibility and consolidation states of subglacial sediments to be derived, and reveals aquifer-scale compressibility that produces an important water-pressure wave associated with the advancing glacier. The model is then used to explore how varying conductivity/compressibility, largely determined by granulometry, can determine drainage states and instabilities that may have a large impact on glacier/ice-sheet dynamics, and how the drainage time of surface water to the bed can determine the frequency response of subglacial groundwater regimes and their influence on subglacial sediment stability. Mismatches between model predictions and specific events in water-pressure records are used to infer processes that are not incorporated in the model: hydrofracturing that changes the hydraulic properties of subglacial sediments; the impact on groundwater pressure of subglacial channel formation; upwelling beyond the glacier margin; and rapid variations in the state of consolidation. The poroelastic model also suggests how seismic methods can be developed further to monitor hydraulic conditions at the base of an ice sheet or glacier.

Thickness changes of ice sheets are, except perhaps at the snout region, small as compared to unity. This suggests using a coordinate stretching so as to make the surface changes in the new coordinates of order one. The explicit occurrence of the smallness parameter in the governing equations then allows us to search for perturbation solutions in various problems. Here, it is shown that the classical formula for the basal shear stress follows easily from such a perturbation procedure. Furthermore it can be improved to account for longitudinal strain effects. As compared to previous work in this area, these formulae are explicit and allow us to take vertical variations of material properties into account in a straightforward manner.

Tidal flexure in ice shelf grounding zones has been used extensively in the past to determine grounding line position and ice properties. Although the rheology of ice is viscoelastic at tidal loading frequencies, most modelling studies have assumed some form of linear elastic beam approximation to match observed flexure profiles. Here we use density, radar and DInSAR measurements in combination with full-Stokes viscoelastic modelling to investigate a range of additional controls on the flexure of the Southern McMurdo Ice Shelf. We find that inclusion of observed basal crevasses and density dependent ice stiffness can greatly alter the flexure profile and yet fitting a simple elastic beam model to that profile will still produce an excellent fit. Estimates of the effective Young's modulus derived by fitting flexure profiles are shown to vary by over 200% depending on whether these factors are included, even when the local thickness is well constrained. Conversely, estimates of the grounding line position are relatively insensitive to these considerations for the case of a steep bed slope in our study region. By fitting tidal amplitudes only, and ignoring phase information, elastic beam theory can provide a good fit to observations in a wide variety of situations. This should, however, not be taken as an indication that the underlying rheological assumptions are correct.

In recent decades, several ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula have diminished in size as a result of climate warming. Using aerial photographic, satellite and survey data we document a similar retreat of Jones Ice Shelf, which was another small ice shelf on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This ice shelf was roughly stable between 1947 and 1969, but in the early 1970s it began to retreat and had completely disappeared by early 2003. Jones Ice Shelf has two ice fronts only a few kilometres apart and its retreat provides a unique opportunity to examine how different ice fronts retreat when subjected to similar climate forcing. We mapped the retreat of both the east and west ice fronts of Jones Ice Shelf and found that, although individual episodes of retreat may be related to particularly warm summers, the overall progress of retreat of the two ice fronts has been rather different. This suggests that in this case the course of retreat is controlled by the geometry of the embayment and location of pinning points as well as climatic events.

In the absence of imposed temperature gradients, the metamorphism of dry snow is dominated by the slow process of vapor diffusion between surfaces of different radii of curvature. This process is so slow in a seasonal snow cover (where temperatures normally change on the scale of hours or days) that vapor migration is usually dominated by the imposed temperature gradient. Thus radius of curvature contributes to but does not control metamorphism except for short periods in very fresh snow. As opposed to dry snow, liquid-saturated snow (i.e. pore space filled by the melt) is metamorphosed by heat flow arising from relatively large temperature differences among the particles. Grain growth in liquid-saturated snow is rapid because of the large temperature differences at nearly constant liquid pressure. In wet snow with low liquid content (2-5% by volume), grain growth is dominated by vapor diffusion (as in dry snow) so grain growth is much slower than under conditions of liquid saturation.

The microstructures and microchemistry of four US International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition ice cores were examined, at three depths (30, 60, 90 m) each, using scanning electron microscopy, including electron backscattered patterns and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), in order to assess the relationship between chemical and physical properties. The physical characteristics (grain size, porosity, density, internal surface volume, and crystallographic orientation) at the four sites were inhomogeneous, as expected on the basis of differences in the moisture content of deposited snow and the accumulation rate at their respective locations. Evidence of shallow subgrain boundary formation and trends in internal surface volume, having implications for the study of firn densification and ice-sheet modeling, were also found. Chemical characterization revealed that site-specific variations in particulate concentration and source could accurately be determined using EDS analysis. It was also found that the combination of elements predominant within the sample controls the morphology and microstructural location of the impurities.

Ice-core records of methanesulphonic acid (MSA) provide a potentially powerful tool for producing proxy records of sea ice, a critical but poorly understood component of the Earth’s climate system. However, MSA is able to diffuse through solid ice, and here we examine the effect of two different methods of frozen storage on the preservation of MSA in archived ice-core samples. Re-analysis of archived ice sticks confirms that MSA diffuses out of ice cores archived in this manner. Despite MSA losses of up to 39% after 7 years storage, the ice sticks studied here preserve much of the variability of the original MSA record, suggesting that useful proxy records can be obtained from archived ice sticks. Furthermore, re-analysis of ice-core samples that had been refrozen into discrete bottled samples for storage demonstrates that it is possible to archive ice samples in a way that prevents MSA loss. In this case, accurate records of MSA variability and concentration were preserved even over storage periods of 15 years. This has important implications for the storage of ice cores and subsequent determination of MSA, and demonstrates that ice storage history needs to be considered when interpreting MSA records.

Sources and implications of black carbon (BC) and mineral dust (MD) on two glaciers on the central Tibetan Plateau were estimated based on in situ measurements and modeling. The results indicated that BC and MD accounted for ~11 ± 1% and 4 ± 0% of the albedo reduction relative to clean snow, while the radiative forcing varied between 11 and 196 and 1–89 W m−2, respectively. Assessment of BC and MD contributions to the glacier melt can reach up 88 to 434 and 35 to 187 mm w.e., respectively, contributing ~9–23 and 4–10% of the total glacier melt. A footprint analysis indicated that BC and MD deposited on the glaciers originated mainly from the Middle East, Central Asia, North China and South Asia during the study period. Moreover, a potentially large fraction of BC may have originated from local and regional fossil fuel combustion. This study suggests that BC and MD will enhance glacier melt and provides a scientific basis for regional mitigation efforts.

A two-dimensional model of glacier flow is presented which includes periodical surging as a natural phenomenon for a certain class of glaciers. The input consists of the bedrock and balance profiles along the glacier, together with the ice flow properties and a frictional lubrication factor. The basal stress is determined from the condition of gross equilibrium for the whole glacier, together with the distribution of the frictional lubrication from energy dissipation along the glacier.

The difference between the basal stress and the down-slope stress of the glaciers produces longitudinal strain-rates which determine the basal sliding velocity. Since the velocity is also involved in the frictional lubrication, feed-back develops between the basal stress and sliding velocity.

For a given lubrication factor, a critical stage can be reached for which the velocity becomes sufficiently high to lower the basal stress, enough to cause very high velocities to develop. The model thus gives rise to three classes of glaciers with two modes of flow.

“Ordinary” glaciers do not have sufficient mass flux, for the given bedrock profile, to go beyond the “slow mode” in which the basal stress and velocity increase together as the glacier builds up to steady state.

“Fast” glaciers have sufficient flux to remain continuously in the “fast mode” with high velocities and relatively low basal stress.

“Surging” glaciers have sufficient flux to reach the fast mode but not sufficient to maintain it, and thus develop a periodically oscillating state between the fast and slow modes with gradual build up and rapid drainage.

Sample results are presented for models of a typical large valley surging glacier and for a very high-speed surging glacier.

There is an asymmetric pattern response of glaciers in Darwin Cordillera (54–55° S, 69–71° W) to the climate of the 20th century. This asymmetry is suggested here as a cause of an increased wind activity which has a pronounced orographic effect. Although climatic records for the last 50 years show a warming trend, as well as no trend in precipitation in the area, some glaciers are advancing. The area is characterized by strong climatic gradients, with high rates of precipitation on the southwestern side of the range and dry conditions on the northern side. Glaciers on the northern and eastern sides show a general trend of receding fronts. With a few exceptions, these glaciers have gradually and uninterruptedly been shrinking since the turn of the century. On the southern rim, the present extents of some glaciers are similar to their 20th century maximum extents. These are, in turn, similar or close to the Holocene maximum. The most extreme sites are the glaciers on either side of Mount Darwin, which is 2469 m high. The north-facing glacier Ventisquero Marinelli has retreated several hundred metres per year over the last two decades, while the south-facing glaciers in the Pahia Pia basin have advanced during the same period.

In this study, the frontal changes over the last 50 years of 20 glaciers have been analysed. Aerial photographs (verticals) from 1943 and 1984 have been used, as well as oblique aerial photographs from 1993. The general result is that glaciers with accumulation areas facing south and west show somewhat stable fronts, while glaciers facing east and north show receding fronts.

We provide the first direct evidence that a number of water-soluble compounds, in particular calcium sulfate (CaSO4·2H2O) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3), are present as solid, micron-sized inclusions within the Greenland GRIP ice core. The compounds are detected by two independent methods: micro-Raman spectroscopy of a solid ice sample, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of individual inclusions remaining after sublimation. CaSO4·2H2O is found in abundance throughout the Holocene and the last glacial period, while CaCO3 exists mainly in the glacial period ice. We also present size and spatial distributions of the micro-inclusions. These results suggest that water-soluble aerosols in the GRIP ice core are dependable proxies for past atmospheric conditions.

We describe the development of a low-frequency airborne radar specifically designed for the sounding of temperate ice. The system operates at a central frequency of 1 MHz and consists of an impulse transmitter with an output voltage up to 5000 V and a digital receiver with a maximum gain of 80 dB. The radar was deployed on board a CASA 212 aircraft, which also carries a laser altimeter, an inertial navigation system, a digital camera and a GPS receiver. A description of the radar system is provided, as well as preliminary results obtained at Glaciar Tyndall, Campo de Hielo Sur (Southern Patagonia Icefield), where an ice depth of 670 m was reached.

A lightweight, portable drilling system for coring up to 500 m depths has been developed and field-tested. The drilling system includes four major components: (1) an electromechanical (EM) dry-hole drill; (2) an ethanol thermal electric drill; (3) a drill set-up with a 500 m cable capacity; and (4) a controller unit. The system may be switched quickly from a dry-hole EM drill to an antifreeze thermal electric drill. This lightweight system makes ice-core drilling more cost-efficient, and creates a minimal environmental impact. The new EM drill, which recovers 100 mm diameter, 1 m long pieces of ice core, is 3.2 m long and weighs 35 kg. This drill and the drilling set-up were recently tested at the Raven (former Dye 2) site, southern Greenland, where a core was recovered to 122 m. The thermal drill is 2.9 m long and weighs 25 kg. It produces 100 mm diameter, 2.1 m long pieces of ice core, and was tested to 315 m in Franz Josef Land, Eurasian Arctic. The drilling set-up with a 250 m cable weighs about 100 kg (or 128 kg for 500 m of cable). After minor adjustments this drill system retrieved cores of better quality than those recovered by other drill systems under similar glaciological conditions. After adjustments to optimize its performance, the drill retrieved 5.25 m of core per hour over the depth range 0–21 m.

General equations of ice dynamics are re-examined, using scale analysis, in order to derive a simplified thermomechanically coupled model for ice flow and heat transfer in ice caps filling volcanic craters. Relatively large aspect ratios between crater depths and diameters, low surface temperatures and intense volcanic heating are the principal characteristics of such craters. The conventional boundary-layer (shallow-ice) approximation is revised to account for these conditions and, in addition, the variable density of the snow, firn and bubbly ice. Large crater depths and intense bottom melting result in low longitudinal balance velocities, controlled by both shear and longitudinal stresses, and hence small surface slopes. In such situations ice can be assumed to be linearly viscous. A flowline model of the glacier dynamics is developed using this assumption. Explicit predictive formulas for ice-particle trajectories and age–depth relations, thus obtained, suggest that the age of ice at the bottom of glaciers in volcanic craters on Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, may reach hundreds or thousands of years. Ice cores from these glaciers represent unique climatic and volcanic archives.
