Numerical methods based on quadrilateral finite elements have been developed for calculating distributions of velocity and temperature in polar ice sheets in which horizontal gradients transverse to the flow direction are negligible. The calculation of the velocity field is based on a variational principle equivalent to the differential equations governing incompressible creeping flow. Glen’s flow law relating effective strain-rate ε̇ and shear stress τ by ε̇ = (τ/B)n is assumed, with the flow law parameter B varying from element to element depending on temperature and structure. As boundary conditions, stress may be specified on part of the boundary, in practice usually the upper free surface, and velocity on the rest. For calculation of the steady-state temperature distribution we use Galerkin’s method to develop an integral condition from the differential equations. The calculation includes all contributions from vertical and horizontal conduction and advection and from internal heat generation. Imposed boundary conditions are the temperature distribution on the upper surface and the heat flux elsewhere

For certain simple geometries, the flow calculation has been tested against the analytical solution of Nye (1957), and the temperature calculation against analytical solutions of Robin (1955) and Budd (1969), with excellent results.

The programs have been used to calculate velocity and temperature distributions in parts of the Barnes Ice Cap where extensive surface and bore-hole surveys provide information on actual values. The predicted velocities are in good agreement with measured velocities if the flow-law parameter B is assumed to decrease down-glacier from the divide to a point about 2 km above the equilibrium line, and then remain constant nearly to the margin. These variations are consistent with observed and inferred changes in fabric from fine ice with random c-axis orientations to coarser ice with single- or multiple-maximum fabrics. In the wedge of fine-grained deformed superimposed ice at the margin, B increases again.

Calculated and measured temperature distributions do not agree well if measured velocities and surface temperatures are used in the model. The measured temperature profiles apparently reflect a recent climatic warming which is not incorporated into the finite-element model. These profiles also appear to be adjusted to a vertical velocity distribution which is more consistent with that required for a steady-state profile than the present vertical velocity distribution.

This paper describes how to grow single crystals of ice of desired orientation by applying the method of seed extraction from the melt. A single crystal of more than 1 g can be grown in less than one hour.

The McMurdo Ice Shelf and associated faunal remains were examined in the vicinity of the easternmost Dailey Island. Stratigraphic, petrographic, and chemical composition studies of cores from two holes drilled through the ice shelf show that at these locations the shelf is composed only of fresh-water ice. Although cores from the deeper hole possessed typically glacial textures throughout, much of the ice from this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf may have been formed from the freezing of a layer of fresh water found sandwiched between shelf bottom and the underlying sea-water. The existence of fresh water under the ice shelf can most probably be attributed to drainage of surface melt water during the ablation season. There was no evidence to indicate that this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf is being nourished by the growth of sea ice onto its lower surface. The fish remains found on the ice surface were confined to a narrow zone along the tide crack and are believed to have been left in this vicinity by deep diving seals. The marine invertebrate remains on top of the ice are associated with morainal material and are believed to have been incorporated into the ice at the time of formation of the moraines.

Glacial ripping involves glaciotectonic disintegration of rock hills and extensive removal of rock at the ice-sheet bed, triggered by hydraulic jacking caused by fluctuating water pressures. Evidence from eastern Sweden shows that glacial ripping caused significant subglacial erosion during the final deglaciation of the Fennoscandian ice sheet, distinct from abrasion and plucking (quarrying). Here we analyse the ice drag forces exerted onto rock obstacles at the base of an ice sheet, and the resisting forces of such rock obstacles: glaciotectonic disintegration requires that ice drag forces exceed the resisting forces of the rock obstacle. We consider rock obstacles of different sizes, shapes and fracture patterns, informed by natural examples from eastern Sweden. Our analysis shows that limited overpressure events, unfavourable fracture patterns, low-transmissivity fractures, slow ice and streamlined rock hamper rock hill disintegration. Conversely, under fast ice flow and fluctuating water pressures, disintegration is possible if the rock hill contains subhorizontal, transmissive fractures. Rock steps on previously smooth, abraded surfaces, caused by hydraulic jacking, also enhance drag forces and can cause disintegration of a rock hill. Glacial ripping is a physically plausible erosion mechanism, under realistic glaciological conditions prevalent near ice margins.

Khovsgol Lake, a seasonal ice-covered lake located in boreal Siberia, plays important economic, transportation and agricultural roles for local residents. On 11 January 2021, an Mw 6.7 earthquake struck the center of this lake, providing a unique opportunity to better understand lake ice movement, ridge distribution, and hydraulic and hydrodynamic processes, as a result of the mainshock. We use a pixel-tracking method on both Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar and Sentinel-2 optical remote-sensing data covering this lake before, during and after the mainshock to obtain lake-ice displacement. Combining these measurements with different viewing geometries, we determine the locations of pressure ridges in each period and derive their relative 3D displacement maps with a precision of <2.2 m. Our results indicate a large E-W displacement of up to 10.3 m and a vertical displacement of up to 4.6 m during the coseismic period, which has a distinctly different magnitude and pattern of displacement compared to the pre- and post-event periods. Given the ice motion pattern and magnitude, we speculate that the unique ice displacement of Khovsgol Lake may have been caused by a rare seismic seiche after the mainshock.

The results of 66 Schlumberger geoelectric soundings on first-year sea ice are analysed to obtain average values of d.c. electrical resistivity both parallel ρ1 and perpendicular ρp to the long brine cell direction. This analysis yields ρ1 = 104 Ω m, 80 Ω m, 45 Ω m, and ρp = 298 Ω m, 230 Ω m, 129 Ω m for brine volumes νb of 40‰, 67‰, and 82‰ respectively. The observed dependence of ρ1 on νb is used in conjunction with a mixing formula for the electrical resistivity of a two-phase heterogeneous system to arrive at values of “average” brine cell lengths l for relatively warm sea ice. This treatment yields l ≈ 1.7 cm for 40‰ ≤νb≤ 70‰ with a rapid extension of brine cell lengths for brine volumes above c. 70‰.

The shearing and ablation of “cold” ice that leads to the formation of ablation and end moraines and the characteristic form of the S.E. edge of the Barnes ice cap are discussed. Some evidence suggests the existence of considerable areas of dead glacier ice extending well beyond the current moraines and completely insulated from melting by glacial debris. This debris consists of old moraines whose relief has been inverted and subdued. An appendix by Mason E. Hale on the current moraine plant succession suggests that the last stable position of the S.E. edge of the ice cap occurred about 1860 and has been followed by retreat at an average rate of about 3 m. per year.

The ice movement on the Byrd Glacier, Antarctica, was measured as function of time, on the basis of aerial photography. The method of aero-levelling strip triangulation with a minimum of geodetic control was applied. The methods and procedures were verified over Laufen-Bauma test area.

Formulae for calculating temperature profiles in steady-state ice sheets are derived in terms of the horizontal and vertical velocities of the surface ice, and of the variation in surface temperature along the flow lines. Two models are considered: parallel flow and radial flow. In each case the result consists of a “stationary” term (equivalent to Robin's equation), a term dependent on the horizontal velocity, and a term arising from the temperature variations. This last term produces reversals in the temperature field such as are measured in practice.

Medial moraines and lineations on the surface of composite glaciers enable the detection of structural and hydrological features. A study of the composite glacier Breidamerkurjökull, south Iceland, indicates relationships between subglacial waterways, ice structure in the junction area, and development of the glacier terminus. First, rivers are situated in or near medial moraines because melt water percolates to the bed and moves from there with the subglacial rivers mainly in the direction of ice flow. Secondly, the contact between two feeder glaciers sometimes forms an angle at the glacier terminus. Then the meltwater river escaping from the contact, generally in a radial direction (away from the glacier front), during the retreat will be transferred to the front of the first receding glacier. The drainage of the contact zone then changes from a radial to a tangential direction, destroying the terminal moraines of the recession stages.

Similar relations are found in relics of Pleistocene ice sheets, two examples of which are compared. The huge subglacial channel of the Münsterländer Kiessandzug-Esker below the ice sheet of the Saalian glaciation in the Münsterland, north-west Germany, was formed in the ice-flow direction. It therefore gives details of the morphology and of the great ice-dammed lake east of the Teutoburger Wald ridge. At the contact between the Norwegian and Baltic Sea glaciers, the terminus formed an angle during the maximum extent of the Weichselian glaciation in northern Jutland. During retreat, the Norwegian glacier receded first. The large melt-water river escaping from the contact between both glaciers had formed the huge Karup Sandur during the maximum, but now, during the recession, it changed to the front of the Norwegian ice, destroying the recession moraines there.

A two-dimensional finite element computer program has been used to compute the elastic stress distribution in realistic multi-layered snow packs. Computations have been done on three-layered and five-layered snow packs intended to simulate conditions on the Lift Gully at Berthoud Pass, Colorado. Calculations have been performed to determine the effect of a layer of new snow and the effect of a weak sub-layer. Stress levels were obtained which are reasonable compared with available snow strength data.

The movement of the Irish Sea glacier is discussed for the St George’s Channel sector during the last major glaciation. It is considered that the ice was already diverging when it crossed Pembrokeshire, after passing through a constriction farther north. This constriction was probably caused by local Irish ice in the west and local Welsh ice in the east. In view of this, it is suggested that the Cardigan Bay coasts could not have been ice-free during the last glaciation.

The construction and use of snow-water tensiometers is gerscribed. Water pressure at the base of a shallow, Arctic snow-pack was measured to illustrate the response of the basal layer to water percolation. Water tension above an ice layer and water flux through the ice layer were measured in glacial snow. The gravity flow theory is used to explain the close agreement between these parameters. This suggests that the ice layer has little effect on the flow field and that gravity (rather than tension gradients) controls the flow. Further work on water tensions is neegerd to igerntify the role of tension gradients in ripening and shallow snow covers.

On the Ross Ice Shelf near Scott Base the annual surface snow accumulation is about 18 g.cm.−2. The increase of firn density with depth is greater than normal, due to horizontal compaction. Where the bottom of the ice shelf has a density less than 0.8 g.cm.−3 the shelf becomes brine-soaked by vertical infiltration. The bottom of the shelf is melting, at about 44 g.cm.−2 yr.−1 where the bottom is impermeable ice and 73 g.cm.−2 yr.−1 where the bottom is permeable firn. Surface velocities at 40 points within 30 km. of Scott Base vary between 4 and 840 m.yr.−1. From the pattern of velocities, ice thicknesses and surface features, a transition zone is delineated, separating the Ross Ice Shelf from the “McMurdo Ice Shelf”.
