The quantification of snow transport, both in wind tunnels and the field, apply particle counting methods limited to punctual sampling of relatively small volumes. Particle counting can only capture horizontal mass fluxes, failing to measure snow erosion or deposition. Herein, we present a novel low-cost sensor tool, based on a Microsoft Kinect, adapted to capture snow surface changes during snow drifting at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. In the wind tunnel setting of these experiments we observe a balance between erosion and deposition at low wind speeds, while erosion is dominant at higher wind speeds. Significant differences in power spectral densities of surface mass flux and horizontal particle mass flux are observed. We show that for the saltation-length-scale parameter λ = 1, the integrated particle flux can be used to estimate the total surface mass flux in the wind tunnel. This provides an important basis to interpret mass flux measurements in the field.

In the summer of 1972, the amount of ice melt obtained by stake measurements on the McCall Glacier, Brooks Range, was compared with the discharge of a small controlled run-off site, and with heat balance calculations. For daily values the agreement was not always good; however, for the 11 d period for which the study was carried out, the agreement can be considered as excellent. The amount of ice melt calculated from run-off and heat balance gave 3.5 and 1.2% higher values, respectively, than the direct measurements. This is encouraging, insofar as it suggests that it may be possible to calculate the combined ice, water, and heat balance for the glacier as a whole.

Field study of the bergschrund of a small avalanche-cone glacier at the base of Mt Chephren, in Banff National Park, has been carried out as part of a general exploratory study of glacier-head crevasses in the Canadian Rockies. The bergschrund consists of a wide, shallow, partly bedrock-floored gap, underneath which extends a nearly vertical Randkluft, and a small, offset, subsidiary crevasse (or crevasses). The following observations regarding the behavior of the bergschrund and ice adjacent to it are of particular interest: (1) topography of the subglacial bedrock is a control on the location of the main bergschrund and subsidiary crevasses, (2) the main bergschrund and subsidiary crevasse(s) are connected by subglacial gaps between bedrock and ice; the gaps are part of the “bergschrund system”, (3) snow/ice immediately down-glacier of the bergschrund system moves nearly vertically downward in response to rotational flow of the glacier, allowing the bergschrund components to keep the same location and size from year to year, (4) an independent accumulation, flow, and ablation system exists in the snow/ice up-glacier of the bergschrund system. (5) most of the void space in the bergschrund system is maintained through the winter, although the wide, shallow part of the main bergschrund fills up with snow, (6) some mass transfer of snow/ice occurs across the bergschrund system, (7) displacement across the bergschrund due to flow of the main glacier body results in significantly more snow being deposited each winter down-glacier of the bergschrund than up-glacier of it.

During the summer of 1983 a 2 kW array of solar voltaic panels was used to power a drill which collected two cores of 154 m and 163 m length to bedrock on the Quelccaya ice cap in Peru. The operation and performance of this array are discussed, considering the need for future requirements in remote pristine areas of the world.

Medial moraines and lineations on the surface of composite glaciers enable the detection of structural and hydrological features. A study of the composite glacier Breidamerkurjökull, south Iceland, indicates relationships between subglacial waterways, ice structure in the junction area, and development of the glacier terminus. First, rivers are situated in or near medial moraines because melt water percolates to the bed and moves from there with the subglacial rivers mainly in the direction of ice flow. Secondly, the contact between two feeder glaciers sometimes forms an angle at the glacier terminus. Then the meltwater river escaping from the contact, generally in a radial direction (away from the glacier front), during the retreat will be transferred to the front of the first receding glacier. The drainage of the contact zone then changes from a radial to a tangential direction, destroying the terminal moraines of the recession stages.

Similar relations are found in relics of Pleistocene ice sheets, two examples of which are compared. The huge subglacial channel of the Münsterländer Kiessandzug-Esker below the ice sheet of the Saalian glaciation in the Münsterland, north-west Germany, was formed in the ice-flow direction. It therefore gives details of the morphology and of the great ice-dammed lake east of the Teutoburger Wald ridge. At the contact between the Norwegian and Baltic Sea glaciers, the terminus formed an angle during the maximum extent of the Weichselian glaciation in northern Jutland. During retreat, the Norwegian glacier receded first. The large melt-water river escaping from the contact between both glaciers had formed the huge Karup Sandur during the maximum, but now, during the recession, it changed to the front of the Norwegian ice, destroying the recession moraines there.

A 198.8 m deep borehole was drilled through ice to subglacial bedrock in the northwestern marginal part of Princess Elizabeth Land, ~12 km south of Zhongshan Station, in January–February 2019. Three years later, in February 2022, the borehole temperature profile was measured, and the geothermal heat flow (GHF) was estimated using a 1-D time-dependent energy-balance equation. For a depth corresponding to the base of the ice sheet, the GHF was calculated as 72.6 ± 2.3 mW m−2 and temperature −4.53 ± 0.27°C. The regional averages estimated for this area based, generally, on tectonic setting vary from 55 to 66 mW m−2. A higher GHF is interpreted to originate mostly from the occurrence of metamorphic complexes intruded by heat-producing elements in the subglacial bedrock below the drill site.

A number of measurements of ice flow in the coastal regions of Antarctica are given. Observations show that the general outward movement of the continental ice, termed “sheet flow”, is locally accelerated where “ice streams” are formed. Estimates indicate that ice streams, which only occupy a small fraction of the total length of coast, are responsible for the removal of more ice from the continent than the “sheet flow” over the remaining length of coast. Further estimates suggest that the great bulk of Antarctic icebergs are produced by ice shelves, but that data on ice shelf movement are inadequate at the time of writing.

The McMurdo Ice Shelf and associated faunal remains were examined in the vicinity of the easternmost Dailey Island. Stratigraphic, petrographic, and chemical composition studies of cores from two holes drilled through the ice shelf show that at these locations the shelf is composed only of fresh-water ice. Although cores from the deeper hole possessed typically glacial textures throughout, much of the ice from this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf may have been formed from the freezing of a layer of fresh water found sandwiched between shelf bottom and the underlying sea-water. The existence of fresh water under the ice shelf can most probably be attributed to drainage of surface melt water during the ablation season. There was no evidence to indicate that this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf is being nourished by the growth of sea ice onto its lower surface. The fish remains found on the ice surface were confined to a narrow zone along the tide crack and are believed to have been left in this vicinity by deep diving seals. The marine invertebrate remains on top of the ice are associated with morainal material and are believed to have been incorporated into the ice at the time of formation of the moraines.

The mathematical theory of heat conduction is applied to the analysis of ice segregation processes in soil. A diffusion equation is first employed for the flow of soil moisture. Two new quantities, the rate of ice segregation,σ and the segregation efficiency, E, are introduced. The first is the rate of ice growth measured as mass per area per time. The latter is defined as E = σL/(K1∂T1/∂x−K2∂T2/∂x), where L is the latent heat of fusion of ice, T1and K1are the temperature and thermal conductivity of frozen soil, and T2 and K2 are the temperature and thermal conductivity of unfrozen soil. Three types of soil freezing can be classified in terms of E: freezing of non-frost-susceptible soil (E = 0), perfect segregation (E = 1) and imperfect segregation (0 < E < 1). Finally, the mathematical boundary conditions at an advancing frost line are obtained in freezing, frost-susceptible soil (E ≠ 0). Two parameters related to the structure of soil are pointed out, which seem to be valid criteria of frost susceptibility. The amount of frost-heaving is derived under special conditions.

Glacier change in Kenai Fjords National Park in southcentral Alaska affects local terrestrial, fresh water and marine ecosystems and will likely impact ecotourism. We used Landsat 4–8 imagery from 1984 through 2021 to manually map lower glacier ice margins for 19 maritime glaciers in Kenai Fjords National Park. Of these glaciers, six are tidewater, three are lake-terminating, six are land-terminating and four terminated in more than one environment throughout the study period. We used the mapped ice margins to quantify seasonal terminus position and areal change, including distinguishing between ice loss at glacier termini and along glacier margins. Overall, 13 glaciers substantially retreated (more than 2σ), 14 lost substantial area and only two underwent both net advance and area gain. The glaciers that had insubstantial length and area changes were predominantly tidewater. Cumulatively, the lower reaches of these 19 glaciers lost 42 km2 of ice, which was nearly evenly distributed between the terminus and the lateral margins. The rapid rate of glacier change and subsequent land cover changes are highly visible to visitors and locals at Kenai Fjords National Park, and this study quantifies those changes in terms of glacier length and area.

Glaciological studies during the Sheffield University Expeditions to Kilimanjaro in 1953 and 1957 included a survey of the glaciers and a close examination of the Penck Glacier and the stagnant remnants of the ice cap on the summit. The Penck Glacier has done little downcutting although it rests on friable rock. The glaciers and summit remnants are rapidly retreating, the Penck Glacier having retreated 3 m. in 3 months in 1957, and nearly 300 m. since 1912. The main accumulation zone appears to be at about 4,500–5,000 m. with a local “low level” firn line and an upper firn line above the top of the mountain. Maps of the glaciers, their recent fluctuations and moraines are being prepared. The glaciological and meteorological observations in 1957 form part of the I.G.Y. programme for East Africa.

All available mean annual accumulation data on the Greenland ice sheet (excluding the Thule peninsula) have been collected and analyzed using multiple regression techniques to develop equations capable of predicting mean annual accumulation. The analysis was carried out for north Greenland, south Greenland, and for the transition zone between the two major regions. The resulting equations show that mean annual accumulation can be predicted from the independent parameters latitude, longitude and elevation. The patterns of accumulation are shown in a series of isohyetal (contours of accumulation in terms of water) maps. The major feature shown is a well defined asymmetry in accumulation; a pronounced east-slope maximum in south Greenland and an equally pronounced west-slope maximum in north Greenland. Poleward of lat. 69° N., isohyets decrease in elevation to the north. Mean annual accumulation ranges from >90 g./cm.2 in south-east Greenland to <15 g./cm.2 in north-east Greenland. A brief discussion of mass balance estimates of the Greenland ice sheet and of the relevance of this study to them is included.

The ice velocity slowdown occurring at Lewis Glacier, Mount Kenya, during the twentieth century has continued beyond 1978. In an earlier paper, a surface velocity decrease approaching 50% was predicted between 1978 and 1985. Measurements to January 1982, halfway through the period, reveal trends generally in line with this forecast: a velocity reduction of order 20% has taken place. The mass flux decreased by at least 25%. Intra-annual variability in velocity pattern and magnitude is apparent; comparatively rapid values occur during the January–February dry season.

A melting probe system has been gerveloped which can be lowered down to 400 m in an ice bore hole of 135-165 mm diameter. At the gersired gerpth, a section of the bore hole is isolated and evacuated. Afterwards several tons of ice are melted under vacuum with an electrical heater. The inclusions which are principally gaseous, may be collected both during or after the melting procedure. The application of this system is mainly in the field of dating polar ice by radio-active isotope analysis.

The pattern of horizontal strain rate in an ice sheet is discussed from a topological point of view. In a circularly symmetric ice sheet, the isotropic point for strain rate at its centre is degenerate and structurally unstable. On perturbation the degenerate point splits into two elementary isotropic points, each of which has the lemon pattern for the trajectories of principal strain rate. Contour maps of principal strain-rate values are presented which show the details of the splitting.
