This paper describes how to grow single crystals of ice of desired orientation by applying the method of seed extraction from the melt. A single crystal of more than 1 g can be grown in less than one hour.

The pattern of horizontal strain rate in an ice sheet is discussed from a topological point of view. In a circularly symmetric ice sheet, the isotropic point for strain rate at its centre is degenerate and structurally unstable. On perturbation the degenerate point splits into two elementary isotropic points, each of which has the lemon pattern for the trajectories of principal strain rate. Contour maps of principal strain-rate values are presented which show the details of the splitting.

A model, relating spatial patterns of snow accumulation in the alpine belt of major mountain ranges to the angular relationship which exists among terrain features such as cirque basins, mean storm-path trajectories, and incident solar radiation, is presented together with a limited amount of relevant empirical data. It is suggested that an “orientation gradient” exists in both the temporal and spatial variation of accumulation and ablation in the alpine terrain, the importance of which varies as some function of the relative control exerted by wind redistribution of snow and of direct incident solar radiation on the accumulation and ablation processes. The data obtained to date suggest that the importance of the orientation gradient varies widely among the mountain ranges studied, being a good predictor of snow distribution patterns in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies and the Snowy Range in southern Wyoming, both of which are relatively windswept, while in the much less windy Bridger Range, in south-western Montana, both orientation and elevation appear to contribute on an almost equal basis. An indirect method of estimating relative amounts of annual mass turnover, using eleven glaciers located in the Wind River of west central Wyoming, is presented.

Lemon Creek Glacier served as the focus of attention of the Juneau Ice Field Research Project from 1953 through 1958. During the International Geophysical Year, it represented one of the glaciological stations in the North American network. This paper presents some of the results of these studies, its purposes being (1) to discuss the 1953–58 annual hydrological budgets, and (2) to test Nielsen’s equations for the equilibrium glacier using 1957 and 1958 movement and hydrological data.

It is found that each budget year for the period studied shows a deficit, except 1954–55 which registered a pronounced surplus. The net deficit amounts to 10.32×106 m.3 of water. The 1956–57 budget was only slightly negative (0.82×106m.3) but that for 1957–58 was strongly negative (8.96×106 m.3). Surface flow measurements were made along five transverse profiles, two of which were plotted over one full year. It is believed that the one-year measurements provide a more accurate and realistic picture of glacier flow than is normally available from short summer surveys. Thu glacier appears to be close to equilibrium and to behave in the manner predicted by Nielsen’s theory of equilibrium flow.

A number of measurements of ice flow in the coastal regions of Antarctica are given. Observations show that the general outward movement of the continental ice, termed “sheet flow”, is locally accelerated where “ice streams” are formed. Estimates indicate that ice streams, which only occupy a small fraction of the total length of coast, are responsible for the removal of more ice from the continent than the “sheet flow” over the remaining length of coast. Further estimates suggest that the great bulk of Antarctic icebergs are produced by ice shelves, but that data on ice shelf movement are inadequate at the time of writing.

Researchers have analyzed various properties of drumlins within individual drumlin fields in order to provide evidence to help in identifying the processes involved in drumlin formation. One property which has been examined is the spatial distribution of drumlins within a field. Traditionally, in such endeavours the individual drumlins have been represented as points and their distribution examined using techniques of point-pattern analysis. We suggest that not only is such a representation inappropriate at this scale, it also introduces statistical bias which makes the results of such analyses questionable. Consequently, we propose an alternative approach which involves representing individual drumlins as areal phenomena and considering their pattern as a two-phase mosaic. The advantages of such an approach are discussed and it is illustrated by applying it to two different drumlin fields.

The McMurdo Ice Shelf and associated faunal remains were examined in the vicinity of the easternmost Dailey Island. Stratigraphic, petrographic, and chemical composition studies of cores from two holes drilled through the ice shelf show that at these locations the shelf is composed only of fresh-water ice. Although cores from the deeper hole possessed typically glacial textures throughout, much of the ice from this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf may have been formed from the freezing of a layer of fresh water found sandwiched between shelf bottom and the underlying sea-water. The existence of fresh water under the ice shelf can most probably be attributed to drainage of surface melt water during the ablation season. There was no evidence to indicate that this part of the McMurdo Ice Shelf is being nourished by the growth of sea ice onto its lower surface. The fish remains found on the ice surface were confined to a narrow zone along the tide crack and are believed to have been left in this vicinity by deep diving seals. The marine invertebrate remains on top of the ice are associated with morainal material and are believed to have been incorporated into the ice at the time of formation of the moraines.

A study of the movement of Rusty Glacier was undertaken and continued through four summers because it is believed to be a surging glacier in the last stages of the inactive phase preceding a surge. The entire glacier is very slow moving, essentially motionless in the lower third and most rapid in an area well above the firn line. Unusually steep flow-line emergence angles and higher than average longitudinal compression rates in the lower–middle part of the glacier indicate gradual thickening of the ice above the stagnant lower tongue. There is no clear correlation between local variations in flow rates and surface or bottom topography. The glacier is mostly colder than 0° C to the bottom, and in the one known area of 0° C bottom temperature, flow rates are not greater than elsewhere. Although the glacier is everywhere very thin, maximum flow rates seem clearly related only to variations in ice thickness. The nearby Trapridge Glacier is also a surging glacier and exhibits a strikingly similar flow pattern.

An analysis is made of the rate of bubble coalescence in an ice mass that is deforming. A total strain of at least 8 is required before appreciable coalescence occurs. The analysis has been applied to deforming ice shelves and ice sheets. No appreciable coalescence is expected in ice shelves but coalescence should occur in ice sheets (or glaciers) if the shear strain-rate at the bottom surface is of the order of 0·075/year or larger. Measurements of bubble concentration are capable of setting limits on paleo-strain-rates of the present ice sheets. Bubble migration down temperature gradients presents complications to the study of bubble coalescence.

The combined heat, ice and water balance was calculated for the McCall Glacier basin (30.6 km²) for a 36 day period in summer of 1971. This period represents about half the ablation period in this region. The heat balance was measured by detailed observations over ice, and secondary stations were established over snow and moraine surfaces. The heat balances calculated for stations located respectively on ice and snow surfaces were assumed to be representative of all such surfaces. The moraine station was only used to obtain evaporation data for areas of the basin not covered by glacier (totalling about 70%). Corrections were made to the radiative fluxes owing to screening of the surrounding mountains and the exposure of the glacier. The ice balance was calculated using 80 ablation/accumulation stakes and the discharge was measured with a water-level recorder, which was calibrated with a current meter. The precipitation was measured with seven rain gauges. Compared with the direct run-off measurements, the values calculated from the heat balance gave a value 5.5% higher, and the stake measurements a value 8.9% lower. This agreement is considered satisfactory and strengthens confidence in the methods employed in each of the three individual calculations.

Since its inception in 1975, the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) has developed and produced micro- and mesoscale weather forecasts to support avalanche forecast and control needs for the Olympic and Cascades Mountains of Washington and Oregon, U.S.A. This paper describes NWAC’s array of data, observational results, and analytical techniques that make “avalanche weather” forecasting possible. In addition, NWAC’s operational program and the general terrain and climate of the area are described. A sample forecast is also included.

A stress-wave model is used to describe snow-slab failure under dynamic loading conditions. This model indicates that dilational waves and shear waves can interact with a thin, weak bedding layer underlying a snow slab causing dilatational and shear stresses in the layer. The magnitude and distribution of stresses in the layer are shown to depend strongly on the height of the loading source above the bedding plane, the difference in impedance between the slab and the loading source, the difference in impedance between the slab and its substratum, and the initial stress magnitude of the loading source. Failure occurs in the bedding layer when the generated stresses exceed the strength of the layer. This causes a loss of shear strength capacity at the bedding plane and a re-distribution of stress in the slab. If the shear capacity is reduced sufficiently the body-force loading of the slab will cause snow-slab failure.

In the summer of 1972, the amount of ice melt obtained by stake measurements on the McCall Glacier, Brooks Range, was compared with the discharge of a small controlled run-off site, and with heat balance calculations. For daily values the agreement was not always good; however, for the 11 d period for which the study was carried out, the agreement can be considered as excellent. The amount of ice melt calculated from run-off and heat balance gave 3.5 and 1.2% higher values, respectively, than the direct measurements. This is encouraging, insofar as it suggests that it may be possible to calculate the combined ice, water, and heat balance for the glacier as a whole.

The ice movement on the Byrd Glacier, Antarctica, was measured as function of time, on the basis of aerial photography. The method of aero-levelling strip triangulation with a minimum of geodetic control was applied. The methods and procedures were verified over Laufen-Bauma test area.

The shearing and ablation of “cold” ice that leads to the formation of ablation and end moraines and the characteristic form of the S.E. edge of the Barnes ice cap are discussed. Some evidence suggests the existence of considerable areas of dead glacier ice extending well beyond the current moraines and completely insulated from melting by glacial debris. This debris consists of old moraines whose relief has been inverted and subdued. An appendix by Mason E. Hale on the current moraine plant succession suggests that the last stable position of the S.E. edge of the ice cap occurred about 1860 and has been followed by retreat at an average rate of about 3 m. per year.
