“Weakest link” theories predict that the brittle fracture of snow is inherently a statistical problem. The probability of failure of snow in centrifugal tensile tests is shown to be a function of σ/σm where σ is the applied stress and σm is a characteristic strength (a maximum strength) which is a function of density ρ alone. Similar probabilities of failure are obtained for measurements at Alta, Utah, and Berthoud Pass, Colorado where the characteristic strength is obtained from the relationship .

Simple analytical models are developed in order to study how up-stream variations in accumulation rate and ice thickness, and horizontal convergence/ divergence of the flow influence the age and annual layer-thickness profiles in a steady-state ice sheet. Generally, a decrease/increase of the accumulation rate and an increase/decrease of the ice thickness in the up-stream direction (i.e. opposite to the flow direction) results in older/younger ice at a given depth in the ice sheet than would result if the up-stream accumulation rate and ice thickness were constant along the flow line.

Convergence/divergence of the up-stream flow will decrease/increase the effect of the accumulation-rate and ice-thickness gradients, whereas convergence/divergence has no influence at all on the age and layer-thickness profiles if the up-stream accumulation rate and ice thickness are constant along the flow line.

A modified column-flow model, i.e. a model for which the strain-rate profile (or, equivalently, the horizontal velocity profile) is constant down to the depth corresponding to the Holocene/Wisconsinan transition 10 750 year BP., seems to work well for dating the ice back to 10 000–11 000 year B P. at sites in the slope regions of the Greenland ice sheet. For example, the model predicts the experimentally determined age profile at Dye 3 on the south Greenland ice sheet with a relative root-mean-square error of only 3% back to c. 10 700 year B.P. As illustrated by the Milcent location on the western slope of the central Greenland ice sheet, neglecting up-stream accumulation-rate and ice-thickness gradients, may lead to dating errors as large as 3000–000 years for c. 10 000 year old ice.

However, even if these gradients are taken into account, the simple model fails to give acceptable ages for 10 000 year old ice at locations on slightly sloping ice ridges with strongly divergent flow, as for example the Camp Century location. The main reason for this failure is that the site of origin of the ice cannot be determined accurately enough by the simple models, if the flow is strongly divergent.

With this exception, the simple models are well suited for dating the ice at locations where the available data or the required accuracy do not justify application of elaborate numerical models. The formulae derived for the age-depth profiles can easily be worked out on a pocket calculator, and in many cases will be a sensible alternative to using numerical flow models.

Experience with the calibration and field use of mercury-in-glass calorimeter thermometers provides an indication of the accuracy attainable and the necessary corrections to obtain that accuracy. Secular changes as large as 57 mK have been observed during the first three years of thermometer use. Light physical tapping is found to reduce the thermometer readings by 3–6 mK. Corrections for variations in the external and internal bulb pressure and care to avoid parallax are necessary to obtain the best accuracy in field measurements. The best accuracy obtainable with these thermometers for temperature measurements near 0°C is approximately ±4 mK for laboratory measurements and ±5 mK for field measurements.

The deformation of a strain triangle (≈6 km × 8 km × 11 km) located on first-year ice in the Beaufort Sea was observed over a two-week period in March 1971. Significant strain events (≈ 1.5%) were observed to occur during short (≈6 h) time periods. The long-term (one day or more) divergence rate varied between 0.04 and 0.08 × 10−3 h−1. Short-term divergence rates showed values as high as 0.29 × 10−3 h−1. The observed shearing motion indicated that the floes to the east were moving to the south relative to the floes to the west. This agrees with the shear pattern that might be expected considering the location of the station in the Pacific Gyre. Studies of fracture (lead and crack) orientations in the vicinity of the strain triangle indicate reasonable correlations with the orientation of the strain-rate ellipse. A qualitative relation is suggested between the fracture density and the long-term divergence rate. Correlations were also observed between the divergence of the wind field as computed from the surface pressure field and the ice divergence.

Results of determinations of proton magnetic relaxation time (T1) in the liquid phase of frozen sea water at temperatures between −2°C and −38°C, with variable rate and direction of temperature change, are presented. Temperature hysteresis corresponding to the crystallization range of certain sea-water salts, mainly NaCl which partially precipitates as the crystalline hydrate NaCl.°2H2O at temperatures below −23°C, is detected in the temperature dependence of T1, as in the analogous dependence of brine content. It is shown that formation of crystalline hydrates in brine is preceded by complete solvation of ions at −5 to −6°C. The main causes of hysteresis in temperature dependence of T1 and the extension of loop limits compared with the analogous loop for liquid brine content are indicated. Additional potentialities of using the nuclear magnetic resonance method for investigating sea-ice properties are presented.

The shear frame is a simple in situ device for indexing the shear strength of thin weak layers. The index is sensitive to shear-frame geometry, rate-of-pull, and shear-frame mass. It is time-consuming to carefully align the device on the Gleitschicht (shear failure plane) in a slab avalanche zone. The ratio shear frame index/shear stress of the Gleitschicht has a high variance, and may not be a fundamental measure of slab avalanche stability. Corrections for the normal stress on the Gleitschicht reduce the variance only slightly. Despite these limitations, the shear frame is a useful tool for gathering statistical data on strength distributions and anisotropies of the Gleitschicht until a more fundamental technique is developed.

Small perturbations in Antarctic environ-mental conditions can culminate in the demise of the Antarctic ice sheet’s western sector. This may have happened during the last interglacial period, and could recur within the next millennium due to atmospheric warming from trace gas and CO2 increases. In this study, we investigate the importance of sea-level, accumulation rate, and ice influx from the East Antarctic ice sheet in the re-establishment of the West Antarctic ice sheet from a thin cover using a time-dependent numerical ice-shelf model. Our results show that a precursor to the West Antarctic ice sheet can form within 3000 years. Sea-level lowering caused by ice-sheet development in the Northern Hemisphere has the greatest environmental influence. Under favorable conditions, ice grounding occurs over all parts of the West Antarctic ice sheet except up-stream of Thwaites Glacier and in the Ross Sea region.

The recently-advancing Taku Glacier is excavating subglacial sediments at high rates over multi-decadal timescales. However, sediment redistribution over shorter timescales remains unquantified. We use a variety of methods to study subglacial and proglacial sediment redistribution on decadal, seasonal, and daily timescales to gain insight into sub- and proglacial landscape formation. Both excavation and deposition were observed from 2003 to 2015 (2.8 ± 0.9 m a−1 to +2.9 ± 0.9 m a−1). The observed patterns imply that a subglacial conduit has occupied the same site over the past decade. Outwash fans on the subaerial end moraine experience fluvial sediment reworking almost year-round, with net sediment gain in winter and net sediment loss in summer, and an overall mass gain between 2005 and 2015. We estimate that tens of meters of sediment still underlie the glacier terminus, sediments which can be remobilized during future activity. However, imminent retreat from the proglacial moraine will limit its sediment supply, leaving the moraine vulnerable to erosion by bordering rivers. Retreat into an over-deepened basin will leave the glacier vulnerable to increased frontal ablation and accelerating retreat.

By 1969 considerable data had been collected over Law Dome from surface measurements. These included surface elevation, ice thickness, accumulation rates, ice movement and strain-rates, surface mean temperatures, and several temperature-depth gradients. Since then core drilling up to 380 m in depth has been carried out from the summit to the coast where the cores reached close to the bed. The bore holes have been concentrated on two main flow lines: one to Cape Folger and the other to Cape Poinsett. The bore-hole temperatures give a clear indication of the temperature distribution throughout the ice cap.

Numerical modelling shows that the measured deep temperatures closely match the steady-state temperature distribution calculated from the present regime. The variations in the temperature profiles over the dome are primarily associated with the flow regime.

The Cape Folger line has low accumulation rates and low velocities which results in positive surface temperature-depth gradients increasing towards the coast. By contrast the Cape Poinsett line has high accumulation rates and high velocities which result in a large negative temperature-depth gradient there. The profile at the Dome summit is close to isothermal primarily due to the high accumulation rates and lack of horizontal motion.

The Weddell Sea pack ice undergoes several unique advance–retreat characteristics related to the clockwise transport in the Weddell Gyre, the physical setting for the pack ice, and the free boundary with the oceans to the north. From satellite-derived ice charts, the annual cycle of the pack ice advance and retreat is depicted. The Weddell pack advance is characterized by a strong east-moving component as well as the north advance seen in other regions such as East Antarctica.

Physical characteristics of the pack ice at the summer minimum ice edge are presented. Indications are that deformation is a significant component of the ice accumulation, deformed ice accounting for c. 15 to 20% of the area covered in the year-round pack. Ablation characteristics are inferred from observations made during field work and from satellite imagery. These observations indicate that surface-melt ablation typically seen on Arctic pack is not seen on the Weddell pack inside the summer edge.

Using the physical-property data and transport inferred from ship and iceberg drifts, a new annual ice accumulation η < 3 m is inferred over the continental shelf in the South compared to η < 2 m previously estimated (Gill, 1973). The implication is that salt flux into the ocean over the shelf may be significantly larger, thereby increasing the production of Western Shelf Water, a component of Antarctic Bottom Water.

No single flow model can simulate all possible glaciers and ice sheets without violating fundamental tenets of computational science. The root cause is not one of numerical sophistication, precision or accurate initial conditions. Instead, using flow and transport as data transmission, glaciers inadvertently function as information processors. This computational capability confers a level of complexity that inherently limits our ability to accurately and efficiently predict glacier flow and therefore, for example, to forecast those aspects of climate systems that depend on glaciers. In particular, even with considerable future advancements in glacier physics, computational theory shows that no dramatic improvements in numerical speed are likely when compared to today’s glacier models. Therefore, to increase speed and resolution, the next generation of climate and sea-level models must rely on simulations tailored to specific ice-sheet geometries rather than general-purpose glacier flow models. However, because glaciers process information, entirely new computation-theoretic advances in glaciology are possible, and concepts from information entropy may help to define new glacier scaling relationships and identify which geometries will be most problematic for modeling.

As part of the feasibility study for the development of an open-pit mine at the edge of the Greenland ice sheet, a study is made of the ice flow toward the proposed pit. The flow is analyzed by considering the two-dimensional flow along seven cross-sections. The most favorable profile is determined for each cross-section and its flow calculated. The excavation necessary to expose the ore is 106 × 106 m3 of ice. 66 × 106 m3 of ice will have to be removed in order to establish favorable profiles and an additional 7.9 × 106 m3 of ice will have to be removed each year in order to prevent the glacier from thickening and advancing into the mine. Many other glaciological problems must be considered, and field work continues in order to provide more information about the area.

Neoglacial deposits in the Indian Peaks section of the Colorado Front Range have been dated lichenometrically by recourse to a growth-rate curve developed for Rhizocarpon geographicum and three glacial fluctuations of the Temple Lake (4500–2700 B.P. ), “Arikaree” (1900–1000 B.P.) and Gannett Peak (300–50 B.P.) have been recognized and identified by Benedict (1968). Recent soil investigations on neoglacial deposits suggest the need to define an alternative type “Arikaree” in the Indian Peaks.

The author agrees with Nye’s correction of two errors in a previous paper; but disagrees with his other objections. Evidence is put forward for the significance of a second approximation in the theoretical equation for the profile of a glacier; for instance, it explains why bulges of increased thickness travel down glacier faster than the ice. Features of the front of the Glacier de Saint-Sorlin are reported. An attempt is made to explain crevasse formation in glaciers and the upturning of blue bands at the foot of an ice fall.

An electrodynamic containment system has been used to study the freeezing behaviour of supercooled water drops, of radius range 25 to 90 μm. The drops were freozen at temperatures between 0 and — 29°C in an environment whose relative humidity was approximately 90% with respect to ice. Freezing events were observed visually and photographically, and measurements were mager of the accompanying freactional mass loss Δm/m.

The most common moger of freeezing (70% of the drops studied) resulted in an apparently spherical ice particle. However, 18% exhibited spikes or other protuberances and the freeezing of 3% was accompanied by the ejection of numerous ice particles. In each of these situations values of Δm/m ranged freom about 5 to 15%. A further 9% of the drops exhibited one or more secondary mass-loss events, occurring several seconds after the freeezing process was complete; these were thus indicative of the ejection of ice particles.

Almost all of the values of Δm/m were significantly in excess of those predicted on the basis of evaporation during freeezing, suggesting that an additional mechanism of mass loss was also present. The measured freeezing times were consigerrably shorter than the classical values—at least, for the larger drops freeezing at warmer temperatures. Some visual observations were consistent with the “supersaturation wave” around a freeezing drop, which has been predicted by Nix and Fukuta (1974).

An attempt has been made to measure the D.C. resistivity of ice directly by placing plane–parallel samples between two electrodes with guard rings. Very strong polarization effects were observed which were most pronounced in ice from an ice–cored moraine, lesser in glacier ice, and the least in artificially frozen ice.
