The annual mass of snow moved by avalanches was observed at 45 avalanche paths over a period of 19 years by measuring the volume and density of each individual avalanche. Several other methods to estimate the total annual avalanche mass were applied but they were found less efficient owing to inaccuracy and difficulties in timing.

For the data set, the yield ratio, i.e. the percentage of snow removed annually by avalanches, had a mean value of 11.2% and a 30 year maximum of 30.9%. The yield ratio varied strongly among avalanche paths and yearly, and could not be explained satisfactorily. The exposure to wind, inclination of the avalanche track, control by artillery, and the winter weather can all have an influence on the value of the parameter.

The temporal variability of avalanche yield is erratic but weather patterns frequently associated with high or low yield ratios could be identified. High values are usually associated with large avalanches triggered by major weather events in the late part of the winter.

The annual layering in the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets revealed by the b 0 record becomes less distinct with depth because of self-diffusion. However, the calculated diffusion rates are loo slow to explain die observations. It is suggested that the presence of veins of liquid water increases the effective diffusion constant by a factor of about 20.

Among the various artificial radioactive markers (mainly from atmospheric nuclear tests), the contamination from the Chernobyl accident has been found at five sampling sites on Northern Hemisphere glaciers. Total beta-activity measurements reveal a very high radio-active level. However, due to the short time of its occurrence, the temporal resolution of this event in the snow layers can be generally quite low and positive results require careful sampling. The size of the signal also depends on the trajectory of the contaminant cloud, the amount of precipitation, and the surface conditions during deposition.

Freezing of water-filled boreholes drives water into the subglacial bed and the associated pressure effects yield information about subglacial hydraulic properties. A numerical model describing the mechanical response of an unconnected borehole and the bed beneath it to this freezing forcing was developed, using a nonlinear transient visco-elastic ice-flow law and an approximate model of top-down freezing. The resulting system of equations was solved using the method of lines. Results agreed well with analytic solutions, when parameters were correctly chosen. Forward modelling of pressure records from three 1992 boreholes and three from other years indicated that the till underlying Trapridge Glacier has a hydraulic conductivity of 1.35-7.0 × 10 −9m s −1. The model was also used to investigate the response of a borehole to sudden pressure changes. The response is very fast compared to pressure-sensor sampling rates; thus, the true basal signal is essentially unaffected by the presence of the borehole, except during the initial freeze-in.

We present the first snow/ice chemistry and ice radar results ever collected from South Georgia as part of an initial reconnaissance with the ultimate goal of assessing the feasibility of a South Georgia ice core to reconstruct past climate in the South Atlantic. South Georgia is well situated to capture a record of past atmospheric chemical composition over the South Atlantic and of past variability in the position and intensity of the austral westerlies. The question is how well preserved an ice core record can be recovered from a region experiencing accelerated melting? The results presented in this paper offer only a preliminary step in determining the feasibility of future deep ice coring on South Georgia. However, this initial reconnaissance does provide some basic information including: the chemistry of the atmosphere over South Georgia relative to other Southern Hemisphere ice coring sites; the potential for preservation of ‘annual layers’ in old ice on the island; a possible age for deep ice in the region; and an estimate of glacier health in the lower elevation regions of the island.

Atmospheric ice accretion results from the exposure of technical equipment or facilities to cold and humid environments. Supercooled droplets in a cloud can impact an airplane's surface and quickly form an ice layer. The presence of air pockets in such a layer is well known and explains the white appearance of some of the accretions. However, estimation of its porosity values and studies on the pore formation mechanics remain limited. In this study, we performed tests in an icing wind tunnel and scans with micro-computed tomography to address these issues. Here, we show that the accretion has closed porosity below 1%, which is mostly produced by the interaction between a spray-like impact on the water surface. The insights we provide here are important to improve ice accretion modelling techniques and establish a different approach to address the interaction between the cloud and the surfaces exposed to atmospheric icing.

Glaciological estimates of the ice supply to George VI Ice Shelf are obtained by integrating the accumulation over the catchment. The basal melt (or possible shelf thickening) rates for the ice shelf are calculated by balancing the accumulation with calving and melting. We calculate an average equilibrium melt rate for the ice shelf of 2 m a −1. If the ice shelf is in mass balance it alone provides 53 km3a −1 melt from its base compared to a total for Antarctica of only 320 km3a −1.

The mean oxygen isotope composition of recent accumulation on the catchment is determined by using accumulation and isotope data, supplemented by temperature measurements and a close empirical relationship between isotope ratio and temperature. The catchment has a mean isotope ratio of −20.8‰ relative to SMOW.

Oceanographic work has previously shown that the sea-water under the ice shelf at the north of George VI Sound is Warm Deep Water modified by melting ice. The melting ice has an isotope ratio of −20.3‰. The good agreement in isotope ratios suggest that the melting ice is from the catchment and because the basal ice of George VI Ice Shelf represents accumulation over the last few millennia the implication is that there has been no systematic change in the isotope composition of the accumulation during this period. This implies no secular change in either the elevation or the climatic temperature of this part of the ice sheet.

The ability to perform microbial detection and characterization in-field at extreme environments, rather than on returned samples, has the potential to improve the efficiency, relevance and quantity of data from field campaigns. To date, few examples of this approach have been reported. Therefore, we demonstrate that the approach is feasible in subglacial environments by deploying four techniques for microbial detection: real-time polymerase chain reaction; microscopic fluorescence cell counts, adenosine triphosphate bioluminescence assay and recombinant Factor C assay (to detect lipopolysaccharide). Each technique was applied to 12 subglacial ice samples, 12 meltwater samples and two snow samples from Engabreen, Northern Norway. Using this multi-technique approach, the detected biomarker levels were as expected, being highest in debris-rich subglacial ice, moderate in glacial meltwater and low in clean ice (debris-poor) and snow. Principal component analysis was applied to the resulting dataset and could be performed in-field to rapidly aid the allocation of resources for further sample analysis. We anticipate that in-field data collection will allow for multiple rounds of sampling, analysis, interpretation and refinement within a single field campaign, resulting in the collection of larger and more appropriate datasets, ultimately with more efficient science return.

A mathematical model for the formation of perched blocks on glaciers due to differential ablation is developed by considering energy balances. The model is applied to naturally positioned rocks on Bersærkerbræ, Greenland. The model predicts correctly whether a rock will perch or sink in eleven out of twelve cases. For artificially positioned small rocks of mean dimension 0.2 m, the model has a 53% success rate. The reduced performance is probably due to the thicknesses of the rocks being of similar magnitude to the range of relief of the glacier surface.

The radiant surface temperature imaged by thermal infrared line-scanning equipment is a product of both surface temperature and emissivity. In detail it is the integrated product of the evolutionary development of the near-surface energy transfer regime. The variation of surface radiant temperature spatially and temporally contains information about the structure, composition, and thermal state of near surface materials. It is suggested that the study of ground ice, sea/lake ice, and the thermal regimes of mountain snow and ice bodies, are reasonable targets for the quantitative application of thermal mapping technology, and that considerable technical development effort be expended on spectral, spatial, and temporal operators for use in computer processing of pictures for glaciological data.

During March-May 1976, a combination of laser and radar ranging systems was used to study the motion of both the fast ice and the pack ice near Narwhal and Cross Islands, two barrier islands located 16 and 21 km offshore in the vicinity of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Laser measurements of targets on the fast ice near Narwhal Island indicate small net displacements of approximately 1 m over the period of study (71 d) with short-term displacements of up to 40 cm occurring over 3 d periods. The main motion was outward normal to the coast and was believed to be the result of thermal expansion of the ice. The radar records of fast-ice sites farther offshore show a systematic increase in the standard deviation of the displacements as measured parallel to the coast, reaching a value of ±6.6 m at 31 km. The farthest fast-ice sites show short-term displacements of up to 12 m. There are also trends in the records that are believed to be the result of the general warming of the fast ice with time.

Radar targets located on the pack ice showed large short-term displacements (up to 2.7 km) but negligible net ice drift along the coast. There was no significant correlation between the movement of the pack and the local wind, suggesting that coastal ice prediction models can only succeed if handled as part of a regional model which incorporates stress transfer through the pack. The apparent fast-ice-pack-ice boundary in the study area was located in 30-35 m of water.

The long-term refrigerated storage of melted snow and/or ice samples for analyses of insoluble microparticles (hereafter, microparticles) may be limited by increases in the biological particle concentration caused by microbial growth after ~1–2 weeks. In this study, we examined an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection method for the storage of melted snow and/or ice samples and determined the effects of this method on microparticles. Surface snow obtained from Glacier No. 31 in the Suntar-Khayata Range, eastern Siberia, Russia was divided into two portions for UV treatment and untreated controls. Microparticle concentrations and size distributions (in the range of 0.52–12.0 μm) in the samples were measured using a Coulter counter. Whereas the microparticle concentration in untreated samples increased, no obvious increase was observed over 53 d in the samples subjected to UV treatment. Microbial growth was detected in only untreated samples using a viable particle counter. In addition, the original microparticle concentrations and size distributions were unaffected by UV treatment. Our results demonstrated that the microparticle size distribution in untreated melted water samples reflects the growth, decomposition and succession of microorganisms over time and further indicate that UV irradiation is effective for long-term storage for microparticle analysis.

During ice-structure interaction, ice will fail in a brittle manner dominated by two processes. The first corresponds to the formation of macrocracks and the consequent spalling-off of large ice pieces. The second includes an intense shear-damage process in zones, termed critical zones, where high pressures are transmitted to the structure. The shear-damage process results in microstructural changes including microcrack formation and recrystallization. A range of tests on laboratory-prepared granular ice have been conducted to determine the fundamental behaviour of ice under various stress states and stress history, particularly as it relates to changes in microstructure. The test series was designed to study three aspects: the intrinsic creep properties of intact, undamaged ice; the enhancement of creep and changes in microstructure due to damage; and the effects of different stress paths. Tests on intact ice with triaxial confining pressures and low deviatoric stresses, aimed at defining the intrinsic creep response in the absence of microcracking, showed that an accelerated creep rate occurred at relatively low deviatoric stresses. Hence, a minimum Creep rate occurred under these conditions. Recrystallization to a smaller grain-size and void formation were observed. Ice damaged uniaxially and triaxially prior to testing showed enhancement of creep under both uniaxial and triaxial loading conditions Creep rates in triaxially damaged ice were found to be non-linear with high deviatoric stresses, corresponding to a power-law dependence of creep rate. Uniaxially damaged specimens contained microcracks parallel to the stressed direction which tended to close under triaxial confinement. Damage under triaxial conditions at low confining pressures produced small recrystallized grains near zones of microcracking. At high confining pressures, a fine-grained recrystallized structure with no apparent cracking was observed uniformly across the specimen. The recrystallization process contributes significantly to the enhanced creep rates found in damaged specimens.

Snow-avalanche speeds, run-out distances, and the concepts from dense granular flows are combined in a model for prediction of speeds along the incline. Field measurements indicate that speeds and run-out distances are nearly independent of path steepness once a length is chosen to scale them. Application of granular-flow concepts explains these results. The most important feature of the model (and the speed data) is the steep gradient of speeds in the run-out zone. These results emphasize the need for high precision in run-out prediction when construction or defences are contemplated.
