The intensity of the Seasat altimeter return power over Antarctica varies in strong correlation with the intensity of model katabatic winds. It is also strongly correlated with the polarization of the passive microwave signal at 37 GHz of the Nimbus-7 SMMR data. It is shown that this is most likely the result of the wind-induced micro-roughness of the ice surface.

Observations of the discharge, electrical conductivity, cationic content, and isotopic composition of glacier-river water indicate that drainage of the lake dammed at the margin of the glacier Austre Okstindbreen, Okstindan, Norway, is preceded by disruption of the glacier’s drainage system(s). Annual studies over a period of 12 years have demonstrated that intense storm precipitation, changes of ablation conditions, and the stage of development of drainage systems all may play a role in triggering drainage of the ice-dammed lake. Water temperature may influence the course of the outburst. The lake has drained on at least ten occasions in the last 12 years. Three of the events (1979, 1985, and 1986) occurred early in the summer, whilst melting of the winter’s snow cover was contributing substantially to glacier-river discharge: high basal water pressure and rapid sliding may have facilitated disruption of drainage conditions within the glacier. In 1982, the lake drained during a severe storm, in 1977 and 1984 shortly after a period of heavy rainfall. During the 1977 and 1984 events, water under pressure burst up through the glacier surface. The lake basin remained partly filled throughout one summer (1980): in-flow of water was balanced by out-flow into the glacier.

A fracture criterion is developed for fine-grained granular snow and is shown to predict accurately the conditions required for fracture under multiaxial states of stress. The criterion is applied to two specific types of deformation histories. The first deformation path involves an initial high strain-rate to produce fracture from an unstressed rest configuration, and the second path involves multiple strain-rate paths. The criterion expresses the critical value of deviatoric free energy in terms of the volumetric free energy and internal energy dissipation, and it was found to predict fracture accurately for tension, compression, and shear.

Field data of ice thickness, velocity and accumulation of the ice plain region of Ice Stream B, Antarctica, are organized into a geographic information system (GIS) and used to calculate the spatial pattern of net mass balance. Overall, the ice plain is thickening at a rate of 0.13 ± 0.05 m a−1. Large uncertainties of the high-resolution calculations are reduced by spatial averaging, revealing a number of areas significantly out of balance. Ice in the broad diverging flow field is mostly thinning but a thinner region of the ice plain which includes ice raft “a” is thickening. Thickening is also indicated farther downstream on the ice plain, matching the thickening already calculated to be occurring upstream of Crary Ice Rise. The patterns of net mass balance for the two major tributaries of Ice Stream Β are asymmetric, demonstrating a real difference in the current dynamics of these two tributaries.

The present surge of the Donjek Glacier on the north-east side of the St Elias Mountains, first noticed in 1969, is producing a number of morphological effects adjacent to the glacier in the terminus area. Although the effects of the surge are minimized by the lobate form of the glacier terminus, several types of push structure, erosional forms and certain drainage changes are being produced. These forms are similar to older forms close to, or on, the Neoglacial maximum moraine. It is considered that the similarities suggest that surges may have occurred throughout most of the Neoglacial period.

The Laurentide and Fennoscandian ice sheets had three major glaciation maxima during the Last Ice Age. All data from the southern margins of the ice sheets indicate that these maxima, as well as minor fluctuations, were synchronous. The same synchroneity is supposed to apply also for correlations between fluctuations on the north and south margins, which reveal a continuously southward displacement of the distribution of glaciation during the Last Ice Age. This southward displacement explains the saw-tooth pattern of 18O records from deep-sea cores in which the first glaciation maximum is under-represented due to its distribution more towards the north. The synchroneity is consistent with a global climatic control of the stadial/interstadial changes and with the recorded global eustatic changes. The southward displacement of glaciation seems to be a general rule also applicable to earlier Pleistocene glaciations.

The Ward Hunt and Milne ice shelves are the present-day remnants of a much larger ice shelf that once fringed the coast of Ellesmere Island, Canada. These ice shelves possess a unique surface morphology consisting of wave-like rolls that run parallel to the shoreline. Setting aside the question of how these rolls originally developed, we consider the impact of this roll morphology on the stability of the ice shelf. In particular, we examine whether periodic variations in ice-shelf thickness and water depth implied by the rolls prevent the excitation of Lamb waves in the ice shelf. Using a hierarchy of numerical models, we find that there are band gaps in the flexural and extensional modes of the ice shelf, implying the existence of frequency ranges that lack wave motion. We show that an ice shelf with rolls is able to reflect waves in these frequency ranges that are incident upon its ice front, thereby mitigating undue stress and calving. We speculate that the roll morphology provides a “fitness” for survival that explains why rolls are observed in the oldest and thickest multiyear sea ice of the Arctic.

Stresses occur in the uppermost 10 m of a glacier as a result of temperature fluctuations at the surface. A model is set up of a typical year's surface temperature variation, and the progress of temperature waves through the glacier is calculated using Fourier theory of heat conduction. Short-period fluctuations are rapidly attenuated, and at 10 m depth the annual cycle is reduced to 5% of its surface amplitude. As the temperature of the ice varies it undergoes small volume changes; stresses are calculated on the assumption that any tendency of the ice to expand or contract laterally results in the creation of just enough stress to cause the ice to remain unstrained. It is found that in the top 2 or 3 m stresses of thermal origin are generally in excess of those due to gross deformation or overburden pressure. For the case of high-density ice Glen's flow law is used, and conditions are found to be favourable for the formation of surface rumples of wavelength about 10 m. For the case of firm or snow a Newtonian flow law is assumed, and it is found that under cold conditions fracture under tension can occur. Cracks of thermal origin may be responsible for the initial formation of crevasses, and they also provide an explanation for background noise encountered when seismic shooting at low temperatures. Calculations are made of the strain-rate field surrounding a crack and it is found that thermal effects can lead to appreciable Strain-rate anomalies for strain-rate measurements near cracks. The magnitude of the effect is easily sufficient to account for anomalous fluctuating strain-rates found by workers using wire strainmeters on the Barnes Ice Cap.

The Desert Andes contain >4500 ice masses, but only a handful are currently being monitored. We present the mass changes of the small mountain glacier Agua Negra (1 km2) and of the rest of glaciers in the Jáchal river basin. Remote-sensing data show Agua Negra glacier lost 23% of its area during 1959–2019. Glaciological measurements during 2014–2021 indicate an average annual mass balance of −0.52 m w.e. a−1, with mean winter and summer balances of 0.80 and −1.33 m w.e. a−1, respectively. The Equilibrium Line Altitude (ELA) is estimated to be 5100 ± 100 m a.s.l., which corresponds to an Accumulation Area Ratio (AAR) of 0.28 ± 0.21. Geodetic data from SRTM X and Pléiades show a doubling of the loss rate from −0.32 ± 0.03 m w.e. a−1 in 2000–2013, to −0.66 ± 0.06 m w.e. a−1 in 2013–2019. Comparatively, the ice losses for the entire Jáchal river basin (25 500 km2) derived from ASTER show less negative values, −0.11 ± 16 m w.e. a−1 for 2000–2012 and −0.23 ± 14 m w.e. a−1 for 2012–2018. The regional warming trend since 1979 and a recent decline in snow accumulation are probably driving the observed glacier mass balance.

The paper presents experimental observations on the growth of spongy ice in the vicinity of the forward stagnation point of a disc situated in a cross flow containing supercooled water droplets. Following some preliminary observations, the discussion focuses on two quantities: the ice fraction and the rate of growth of the accretion. The data presented reveal the effects of air speed, air temperature, liquid-water content, and salinity. They also suggest two morphological regimes: at higher air temperatures, the growth appeared to be crystalline columnar; at lower temperatures, smaller crystals appeared to be randomly distributed, producing a mushy accretion.

A new down bore-hole instrument to extract atmospheric gases entrapped in glacier ice was designed, developed and tested in a Greenland ice tunnel. Using this ice and a 7.5 kW. source, about 30 hr. are required to melt the approximately 1 metric ton sample, extract the gases, and to separate and collect with molecular sieves the minimum of 100 cm.3 of CO2 necessary for the 14C measurements made later using special low-level counters. Age results using the down bore-hole CO2 samples agree with results obtained earlier from CO2 samples collected at the same tunnel location using a vacuum-vessel melting technique. A mean value of 5,120±200 yr. b.p. is obtained for the seven samples measured using both collection systems, making this the oldest natural polar glacier ice measured to date.

In 1985, 1987 and 1988, we measured deformation of boreholes in the ablation zone of Storglaciären. A different hole was used each year. Deformation profiles were determined for four consecutive time periods between mid-July and early September. All three holes were in an area where the glacier lies in an overdeepened part of the bed, up-glacier from a riegel. The first hole was approximately on the glacier center line while the others were midway between the center line and one or the other margin. Despite large standard errors, variations in the deformation profiles during the melt season are broadly consistent with other data. We thus believe that they are real, and that they reflect changes in the stress field resulting from changes in drag at the bed. A decrease in drag early in the melt season, coupled with convergence of the bed contours towards the riegel, is believed to be responsible for a previously documented increase in vertical velocity just up glacier from the riegal at this time of year. Also noteworthy, but perhaps problematical, was an abrupt transverse shear of at a depth of ~25 m near the center of the glacier in July 1985. The shear took place in the zone in which cold ice near the surface gives way to temperate ice deeper in the glacier.

Ice-crystal fabric can induce mechanical anisotropy that significantly affects flow, but ice-flow models generally do not include fabric development or its effect upon flow. Here, we incorporate a new spectral expansion of fabric, and more complete description of its evolution, into the ice-flow model Elmer/Ice. This approach allows us to model the effect of both lattice rotation and migration recrystallization on large-scale ice flow. The fabric evolution is coupled to flow using an unapproximated non-linear orthotropic rheology that better describes deformation when the stress and fabric states are misaligned. These improvements are most relevant for simulating dynamically interesting areas, where recrystallization can be important, tuning data are scarce and rapid flow can lead to misalignment between stress and fabric. We validate the model by comparing simulated fabric to ice-core and phase-sensitive radar measurements on a transect across Dome C, East Antarctica. With appropriately tuned rates for recrystallization, the model is able to reproduce observations of fabric. However, these tuned rates differ from those previously derived from laboratory experiments, suggesting a need to better understand how recrystallization acts differently in the laboratory compared to natural settings.

Observations in a deep mine working which reached the base of a valley glacier some 150 m. below the ice surface indicated an initial cold and impervious condition at and near the ice–rock contact. Later, however, an excellent hydraulic connection with free water in the upper layers of the glacier was established, perhaps by the thawing of a passage upward through the ice by warm water escaping from the mine. Subsequent records of water levels, or of water pressures, within the mine, reflecting conditions in the upper part of the glacier, show periods of moderately steady conditions, at times showing slight diurnal fluctuations, interrupted by irregular and catastrophic surges, particularly during periods of rapid snow melt and heavy rains. A seasonal cycle in pressure is suggested by the record.

An investigation into the feasibility of using a strain rosette to measure the principal strains and to locate the principal axes for a propagating strain wave is carried out for the particular application of a flexural-gravity wave in sea ice. It is found that the separation of the instruments in the rosette is extremely critical and, for a physically realizable rosette, errors are unavoidable if strain is to be monitored continuously. An alternative approach is proposed employing frequency-domain analysis and in particular a running-power spectral density. The method is demonstrated with data obtained from strainmeters on fast ice in Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. Two distinct wave components are found to be present of period 6 s and 13s. and it is shown with 99.9% confidence that they are propagating in different directions.

We investigate the physical basis of the crevasse-depth (CD) calving law by analysing relationships between glaciological stresses and calving behaviour at Sermeq Kujalleq (Store Glacier), Greenland. Our observations and model simulations show that the glacier has a stable position defined by a compressive arch between lateral pinning points. Ice advance beyond the arch results in calving back to the stable position; conversely, if melt-undercutting forces the ice front behind the stable position, it readvances because ice velocities exceed subaqueous melt rates. This behaviour is typical of self-organising criticality, in which the stable ice-front position acts as an attractor between unstable super-critical and sub-critical regimes. This perspective provides strong support for a ‘position-law’ approach to modelling calving at Sermeq Kujalleq, because any calving ‘rate’ is simply a by-product of how quickly ice is delivered to the critical point. The CD calving law predicts ice-front position from the penetration of surface and basal crevasse fields, and accurately simulates super-critical calving back to the compressive arch and melt-driven calving into the sub-critical zone. The CD calving law reflects the glaciological controls on calving at Sermeq Kujalleq and exhibits considerable skill in simulating its mean position and seasonal fluctuations.

We present new data from the debris-rich basal ice layers of the NEEM ice core (NW Greenland). Using mineralogical observations, SEM imagery, geochemical data from silicates (meteoric 10Be, εNd, 87Sr/86Sr) and organic material (C/N, δ13C), we characterize the source material, succession of previous glaciations and deglaciations and the paleoecological conditions during ice-free episodes. Meteoric 10Be data and grain features indicate that the ice sheet interacted with paleosols and eroded fresh bedrock, leading to mixing in these debris-rich ice layers. Our analysis also identifies four successive stages in NW Greenland: (1) initial preglacial conditions, (2) glacial advance 1, (3) glacial retreat and interglacial conditions and (4) glacial advance 2 (current ice-sheet development). C/N and δ13C data suggest that deglacial environments favored the development of tundra and taiga ecosystems. These two successive glacial fluctuations observed at NEEM are consistent with those identified from the Camp Century core basal sediments over the last 3 Ma. Further inland, GRIP and GISP2 summit sites have remained glaciated more continuously than the western margin, with less intense ice-substratum interactions than those observed at NEEM.
