Calculation of the calving loss of tidewater glaciers depends on accurate bedrock information. In regional to global-scale projections of future tidewater glacier evolution this dependence is problematic. Bedrock topographies are often unknown and can only be modelled from surface properties. Existing approaches, however, mostly underestimate the ice thickness towards the calving fronts of marine-terminating glaciers. This implies a compromised performance of global-scale projection models which often employ functions of water depth at the calving fronts of tidewater glaciers. Here, we present a sensitivity study that analyses the impact of five different bedrock datasets on projected mass losses from the tidewater glacier Hansbreen in southern Svalbard. Our modelling study calculates the glacier's response to artificial mass-balance forcing. We show that bedrock inaccuracies may lead to a substantially deviating retreat behaviour. The common underestimation of frontal ice thickness/water depth in the modelled bedrock datasets induces an underestimation of sea level-relevant mass losses over the first several decades of modelling. The duration of this period is reduced when assuming warmer climates. Our results thus underline the importance of accurate bedrock topography data for the reliability of glacier evolution projections and for the accuracy of the temporal trajectories of related sea level-relevant mass losses.

Observations are reported on cracks formed during compressive, unidirectional, constant-strain-rate deformation of columnar-grain ice. The axis of hexagonal crystallographic symmetry of each grain tended to be in the plane perpendicular to the long direction of the grains and to have a random orientation in that plane. For stress applied perpendicular to the long direction of the grains, the deformation was practically two-dimensional. It was found that the relative proportion of grain-boundary cracks increased with increasing strain rate, decreasing temperature and, for strain rate greater than 7 × 10−5 s−1, with decreasing grain-size. Almost all the grain-boundary cracks had at least one edge at a triple point. For each test, the grain-boundary and transcrystalline crack lengths tended to have a log-normal distribution. The logarithmic mean crack length (LMCL) decreased with increasing strain rate, decreasing grain-size and decreasing temperature and tended to a constant value of 0.75 mm at 10°C. For grain-size of 3 mm or greater, the LMCL had a maximum at a strain rate of 10−5 to 10−6 S−1 at −10°C. The LMCLs and the relative proportion of grain-boundary cracks tended to be normally distributed for given load conditions.

Iceberg calving is one of the major mechanisms of ice loss from tidewater glaciers and ice sheets, but obtaining accurate estimates of ice discharge that are both continuous and accurate is a challenging task. Recent results have demonstrated the effective application of passive cryoacoustics – the use of naturally generated sounds to study the cryosphere – to quantify subaerial calving fluxes. However, little is known about the acoustic signatures of submarine calving. This study investigates the underwater noise from 656 subaerial and 162 submarine calving events observed at Hansbreen, Svalbard in the summers of 2016 and 2017. Statistical analysis of the acoustic signal shows that the normalized power of the calving noise is log-normally distributed regardless of the calving mode. However, submarine events can be distinguished from subaerial events by using the shape parameter of the log-normal distribution paired with the calving signal duration. The newly developed classification model may potentially be used for two purposes: (1) to study potential causal relationships between these two calving modes and (2) to separate calving fluxes into subaerial and submarine components. The latter will also require knowledge of the relationship between ice mass and sound spectral level for submarine calving events.

Field investigation of six medial moraines on glaciers near Arolla, Valais, Switzerland, has revealed that all are nourished by englacial till. This is probably derived from supraglacial point-sources on the accumulation zones of the glaciers, and is released in increasing quantities on the ablation zones, where it emerges diffusely or by way of clearly defined transverse or longitudinal debris bands. Possible mechanisms of formation of these debris bands are reviewed, and it is proposed that the transverse bands originated as crevasse fillings on the accumulation zones. Morphologically all six moraines display waxing sections (of increasing height and breadth), related to development of a protective till cover and resultant differential ablation of the glacier surface. Two only display waning sections (of decreasing height), resulting from lateral sliding of till and “inverted” differential ablation resulting from extreme attenuation of till cover. Four “moraine-types” (related to nature of debris supply and detailed morphology) are identified in the Arolla area. It is believed that these may form the basis for a classification of medial moraines.

Tiny samples of ancient atmosphere in air bubbles within ice cores contain argon (Ar), which can be used to reconstruct past temperature changes. At a sufficient depth, the air bubbles are compressed by the overburden pressure under low temperature and transform into air-hydrate crystals. While the oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2) molecules have indeed been identified in the air-hydrate crystals with Raman spectroscopy, direct observational knowledge of the distribution of Ar at depth within ice sheet and its enclathration has been lacking. In this study, we applied scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to five air-hydrate crystals in the Greenland NEEM ice core, finding them to contain Ar and N. Given that Ar cannot be detected by Raman spectroscopy, the method commonly used for O2 and N2, the SEM-EDS measurement method may become increasingly useful for measuring inert gases in deep ice cores.

Observations at the snouts of several glaciers in Spitsbergen indicate that, between their present apparent limits and the moraines dating from the maximum Holocene extent of ice, wide areas of outwash deposits underlain by dead glacier ice occur. Such ice was visible at a number of localities. Indirect evidence of dead ice includes kettle-holes, collapse structures and, in one case, a subglacial melt stream emerging as a fountain within one such plain. Aufeis, formed in early winter, can sometimes also be preserved in the long term if covered by fluvio-glacial material. The presence of such ice has implications for the interpretation of soft-sediment structures in glacigenic successions. Previously, many folds and faults have been interpreted as resulting from active ice overriding or pushing the sediment. Simple ablation beneath the sedimentary layer in question also gives rise to similar structures.

The two medial moraines of the Glacier de Tsidjiore Nouve are nourished by rock debris revealed at the surface by progressive ablation down-glacier. The sources of the moraine appear to be rock outcrops marginal to or above the Pigne d’Arolla ice fall, much of the detritus entering the glacier via crevasses either at the summit or the base of the ice fall. The role of differential ablation in the emergence of the moraines as relief features is illuminated by measurements made in the late summers of 1971 and 1972. The eventual decline of the moraines down-glacier is related to factors of reducing debris supply, lateral sliding and accelerated ablation due to attenuation of the detrital cover to a mean thickness of 1 cm or less. A model of moraine development, different in several respects from that proposed by Loomis (1970) for the Kaskawulsh Glacier, Alaska, is outlined.

Recent geophysical and glaciological investigations of the Ross Ice Shelf have revealed many complexities in the ice shelf that can be important factors in iceberg structure. The presence of rift zones, surface and bottom crevasses, corrugations, ridge/troughs, and other features could substantially modify the hydraulics of iceberg towing and lead to disintegration in the course of transport.

The relationships between the elevation above sea-level and total ice thickness for three ice shelves (Ross, Brunt, and McMurdo) are given; from them, expressions for the thickness/freeboard ratios of tabular icebergs calved from these ice shelves are obtained. The relationships obtained from the measured values of surface elevation and ice thickness are in agreement with models derived assuming hydrostatic equilibrium.

Areas of brine infiltration into the Ross Ice Shelf have been mapped. Examples of radar profiles in these zones are shown. Absorption from the brine layers results in a poor or absent bottom echo. It is probable that little saline ice exists at the bottom of the Ross Ice Shelf front due to a rapid bottom melting near the ice front, and that the thickness of the saline ice at the bottom of icebergs calving from the Ross Ice Shelf is no more than a few meters, if there is any at all.

We have observed many rift zones on the ice shelf by airborne radar techniques, and at one site the bottom and surface topographies of (buried) rift zones have been delineated. These rift zones play an obvious role in iceberg formation and may also affect the dynamics of iceberg transport. Bottom crevasses with different shapes, sizes, and spacings are abundant in ice shelves; probably some are filled with saline ice and others with unfrozen sea-water. Existence of these bottom crevasses could lead to a rapid disintegration of icebergs in the course of transport, as well as increasing the frictional drag at the ice-water boundary.

Radar profiles of the ice shelf front at four sites in flow bands of very different characteristics are shown. In some places rifting up-stream from the front shows regular spacings, suggesting a periodic calving. Differential bottom melting near the front causes the icebergs to have an uneven surface and bottom (i.e. dome shaped).

Electrical resistivity soundings on the ice shelf can be applied to estimate the temperature-depth function, and from that the basal mass-balance rate. With some modifications, the technique may also be applied to estimating the basal mass balance rates of tabular icebergs.

A simple numerical flow model that couples mass divergence directly to basal shear stress as the only driving force is used to study kinematic waves. Kinematic waves that result from a perturbation of the ice thickness or mass balance are compared with the linear kinematic-wave theory of Nye/Weertman. The wave velocity is calculated as a function of the wavelength and amplitude of a perturbation. The modelled wave velocity is typically 6–8 times the vertically averaged velocity in the flow direction whereas linear theory predicts a factor of only 5.

An experiment with the geometry of Hintereisferner, Austria, shows that the increase in the local ice velocity during a kinematic wave is about 10% but varies slightly depending on the position along the glacier and the amplitude of the kinematic wave. Kinematic waves are thus hard to detect from velocity measurements.

The dynamics of simple continuity models are rich enough to support a variety of kinematic-wave phenomena. Such models are a useful tool to study the response of valley glaciers to climate change.

Temperature compensation built into many conductivity meters becomes inaccurate in low-temperature waters typical of glacial melt streams. Experiments using simulated glacial waters show a linear dependence of electrical conductivity on temperature from 0.3° to 25°C. The slope of the temperature–conductivity relation is linearly dependent on the conductivity of the solution, allowing a numerical or analytical temperature correction to be made. To minimize error introduced by temperature compensation, measurements of electrical conductivity in glacial streams should be corrected to a low standard temperature, and 0°C is suggested.

The temperatures in downhill skies were measured with thermocouples to investigate the heat generation associated with the sliding of skis on snow. In these tests we investigated the effects on ski temperature of the ambient snow temperature, snow type, speed, load and thermal conductivity. A significant temperature rise at the base of the ski was found at the onset of motion in all runs. The temperature rise increased for heavier loads and at lower ambient temperatures. Some ski runs lasted long enough to observe a steady-state temperature at the ski base; it increased with ambient temperature. Longitudinal and transverse temperature variations occurred and were sensitive to snow hardness and skiing technique.

We also investigated heat flow through the cross-section of the ski with a finite-element model to determine the effects of ski structure on heat retention at the base. We found that the thermal characteristics as determined by the structure of the ski had a significant effect on the temperature at the ski base. At lower temperatures we expect that friction will be greater in skis which have a large aluminum plate across their base. Steel edges have a lesser effect.

The crystal character of the ice core within frost blisters supports the hypothesis that groundwater injection into residual zones of the active layer followed by rapid freezing is the primary growth mechanism for these features. The ice core is characterized by an upper zone of relatively small randomly arranged equigranular ice crystals which change with increasing depth to columnar anhedral crystals, commonly exceeding 200 mm in length, and with crystal diameters ranging between 25 and 35 mm. Petrofabric analyses show that the c-axis orientations are normal to crystal elongations, with crystal growth along the basal plane in an a-axis direction. These observations eliminate ice segregation as a possible growth mechanism, thereby distinguishing seasonal frost mounds from palsas.

Several seasons of aerial ice-thickness soundings over the region of the Prince Charles Mountains, the Lambert Glacier system, the Amery Ice Shelf, and their drainage basin in east Antarctica have now been completed. The measurements provide detailed maps of surface topography and ice thickness over an area of about 2 X 105 km2. The equipment used consisted of a 100 MHz echo sounder designed and constructed by Antarctic Division and carried in a Pilatus Porter aircraft. ERTS imagery provides a valuable background for portraying the echo-sounding results. These results show that an extensive, deep subglacial valley system forms the basis of the large drainage basin with concave ice surface topography which channels the ice flow into the Amery Ice Shelf. Deep glacial streams penetrate a long way into the ice-sheet basin. The rock relief is considerable, varying from 3 000 m above (present) sea-level to 2 000 m below sea-level. A very deep subglacial trench exists in the region of the confluence of the Fisher, Mellor, and Lambert Glaciers where the ice thickness reaches 2 500 m. The low surface slope and high ice velocity are suggestive of high melt production in this region. The strong echo, together with the high bedrock back-slope, suggests that the deep trench may contain a basal melt lake.

The Grinnell and Terra Nivea Ice Caps are the southernmost in eastern North America. The Grinnell Ice Cap reaches an altitude of 870 m. (2854 ft.). The general tendency is for slight retreat, but one large glacier is advancing. The equilibrium line is considerably lower than on the Penny Ice Cap to the north. Both firn and superimposed ice are important in the economy.

Glacier and ice sheet research is frequently justified on the basis of potential benefits to those communities that are most vulnerable to glacier change. In this glaciology research, funding priorities and communication to the broader public are strongly affected by the experiences and values of glaciology researchers. Using population data and newly available survey data from research organizations including glaciologists, we show that there is a substantial misalignment between the demographics of those who stand to benefit from glaciological research and those who produce glaciological knowledge. We discuss the potential negative consequences of this misalignment, which causes scientific research to be less effective, valuable and usable for communities. We conclude by outlining twenty evidence-based strategies that individuals and organizations can adopt to improve the recruitment and retention of a more representative group of scientists in glaciological research and encourage co-production with communities.

Glacier variations during the last few centuries have shown a marked coherence over the globe. Characteristic features are the maximum stand somewhere in the middle of the nineteenth century, and the steady retreat afterwards (with some minor interruptions depending on the particular region). In many papers, qualitative statements have been made about the causes of these fluctuations. Lower temperatures associated with solar variability and/or volcanic activity are the most popular explanations. In particular, the statistical relation between glacier activity and major volcanic eruptions appears to be strong.

In this paper, an attempt is made to simulate recent glacier fluctations with a physics-based model. A simple climate model, calculating perturbations of surface-radiation balance and air temperature (not necessarily in phase!), is coupled to a schematic time-dependent glacier model. The climate model is forced by volcanic activity (Greenland acidity and/or Lamb’s dust-veil index) and greenhouse warming. Solar variability was not considered, because its effect on climate has still not been demonstrated in a convincing way. The output is translated into variations in equilibrium-line altitude, driving the glacier model.

The simulated variations in glacier length show good agreement with the observed record, but the amplitude is too small. This is improved when mass-balance gradients are assumed to be larger in warmer climates. Compared to recently published modelling studies of particular glaciers, in which series of local parameters (e.g. tree-ring width and temperature) were used as forcing, the present simulation is better. This suggests that the radiation balance is a decisive factor with regard to glacier variations on longer time-scales. The model experiments lend support to the results of Porter (1986), who concluded from a more qualitative study that a strong relation exists between periods of increased volcanic activity and glacier advances.

A comparison of some selected runs shows that, according to the present model, the greenhouse warming would be responsible for about 50% of the glacier retreat observed over the last 100 years.

The relations between mass balance and meltwater refreezing were examined on the basis of glaciological observations carried out in summer 1993 on Xiao Dongkemadi Glacier, Tanggula Mountains, central Tibetan Plateau. On this glacier, a part of meltwaler refreezes at the snow/ice interface as superimposed ice. The amount of superimposed ice formation was determined by both meltwater supply and temperature condition of the glacier. Snow-layer thickness on the glacier ice body is less than 2 m, even in the higher accumulation zone. About 60% of meltwaler generated in the accumulation zone for the period May–September was trapped at the snow/ice interface by refreezing, and was not discharged out of the glacier. About 26% of accumulated snow to the glacier surface was replaced on the snow/ice interface by refreezing in the accumulation zone. These facts indicate that superimposed ice formation is quite significant for water retention in glaciers under low-precipitation conditions.

Fracture-toughness testing of both fresh-water and sea ice has used specimen geometries designed for metals. These designs are too large and difficult to manufacture for testing material cored from a glacier. This paper presents an alternative specimen, a radially cracked ring fractured by internal pressure. Tests using this specimen on the Bersærkerbræ, a valley glacier in the Stauning Alper, north-east Greenland, gave a mean fracture toughness of 58 . This is half the value typically obtained by other workers in laboratory tests. The results are compared with other data and the reasons for the disagreement discussed.
