Assessment of the contribution of small glaciers to sea-level rise or the reconstruction of past glacial mass balance requires knowledge of mass-balance sensitivity to climatic variations. The aim of this paper is to clarify this relation. The mass-balance fluctuations analyzed from measurements on glacier d’Argentière, Mont Blanc massif, France, between 1850 and 2700 m a.s.l. were compared with climatic variations at a nearby meteorological station. Statistical study of the data shows that: (1) the annual mass-balance fluctuations are dependent on elevation, and (2) the mass-balance sensitivity to temperature decreases with altitude and diverges from current model results. Consequences of a temperature variation of 1°C for global volume variations are significant. A simple calculation on glacier des Bossons, Mont Blanc massif, France, shows that the sensitivity from the model can lead to volume variations twice as high as results compatible with our observations.

Glaciers in fjords almost always reach standstill positions at the fjord mouths or at changes in their width. Between such positions the terminus is usually advancing or retreating: the advance may be anomalous compared to glaciers on dry land in the vicinity, and the retreat may be catastrophically rapid. These peculiarities of fjord glaciers can be at least partly explained by considering conditions to be expected in an ideal fjord of constant width: the glacier cannot reach equilibrium by changing the extent of its ablation area or its calving terminus, and these cannot change their altitude with respect to sea-level in response to a rise or fall in the firn limit.

This paper is concerned with the motion of an unconfined finite mass of granular material down an inclined plane when released from a rest position in the shape of a circular or elliptical paraboloid. The granular mass is treated as a frictional Coulomb-like continuum with a constant angle of internal friction. The basal friction force is assumed to be composed of a Coulomb-type component with a bed-friction angle that is position-dependent and a viscous Voellmy-type resistive stress that is proportional to the velocity squared. The model equations are those of Hutter and others (in press b) and form a spatially two-dimensional set for the evolution of the avalanche height and the depth averaged in-plane velocity components; they hold for a motion of a granular mass along a plane surface.

Similarity solutions, i.e. solutions which preserve the shape and the structure of the velocity field, are constructed by decomposing the motion into that of the centre of mass and the deformation relative to it. This decomposition is possible provided the effect of the Voellmy drag on the deformation is ignored. With it, the depth and velocities relative to those of the centre of mass of the moving pile can be determined analytically. It is shown that the pile has a parabolic cap shape and contour lines are elliptical. The semi-axes and the position and velocity of the centre of mass are calculated numerically. We explicitly show that

• (i) For two-dimensional spreading, a rigid-body motion does not exist, no matter what be the values of the bed-friction angle and the coefficient of viscous drag.

• (ii) A steady final velocity of the centre of the mass cannot be assumed, but the motion of the centre of mass depends strongly on the value of the Voellmy coefficient.

• (iii) The geometry of the moving pile depends on the variation of the bed-friction angle with position, as well as on the value of the coefficient of viscous drag.

A two-dimensional model which links the atmosphere, the mixed layer of the ocean, the sea ice, the continents, the ice sheets and their underlying bedrock has been used to test the Milankovitch theory over the last glacial—interglacial cycle. It was found that the orbital variations alone can induce, in such a system, feed-backs sufficient to generate the low-frequency part of the climatic variations over the last 122 kyear. These simulated variations at the astronomical time-scale are broadly in agreement with ice volume and sea-level reconstructions independently obtained from geological data. Imperfections in the simulated climate were the insufficient southward extent of the ice sheets and the too small hemispheric cooling during the last glacial maximum. These deficiencies were partly remedied in a further experiment (Gallée and others, in press) by using the time-dependent CO2 atmospheric concentration given by the Vostok ice core in addition to the astronomical forcing. For this second experiment, the main mechanisms and feedbacks responsible for the glaciation and the deglaciation in the model are discussed here.

Arctic sea ice is going through a dramatic change in its extent and volume at an unprecedented rate. Sea-ice thickness (SIT) is a controlling geophysical variable that needs to be understood with greater accuracy. For the first time, a SIT-retrieval method that exclusively uses only airborne SIT data for training the empirical algorithm to retrieve SIT from Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) brightness temperature (TB) at different polarization is presented. A large amount of airborne SIT data has been used from various field campaigns in the Arctic conducted by different countries during 2011–15. The algorithm attempts to circumvent the issue related to discrimination between TB signatures of thin SIT versus low sea-ice concentration. The computed SIT has a rms error of 0.10 m, which seems reasonably good (as compared to the existing algorithms) for analysis at the used 25 km grid. This new SIT retrieval product is designed for direct operational application in ice prediction/climate models.

In Svalbard and Iceland there appears to be much more debris entrained in glaciers that surge than in those which do not. Conditions particularly favourable for the basal incorporation of debris develop as a consequence of the high flow velocities attained by a surge. These are increased cavitation in the lee of obstacles and an increased supply of basal melt water resulting from frictional heat and from the trigger zone. Layers of regelation ice incorporating debris can thus develop to a much greater vertical and horizontal extent than in non-surging glaciers. Excessive shearing, and the distortion of foliation structures in the terminal zone of compressive flow, enhance the vertical development of the debris-rich regelation layers. Glaciers that surge over outwash and/or fjord-bottom sediments become particularly rich in debris.

A freezing slope, distinct from that of precipitation, is displayed on a δD–δ18O diagram by basal ice in different circumstances. However, if the subglacial reservoir allowed to freeze is mixed in the course of time with an input having a lighter isotopic composition, basal ice cannot be distinguished from glacier ice in terms of slope. Such a situation is encountered at the base of Grubengletscher and is indicated by a computer simulation using the open-system model of Souchez and Jouzel (1984). Suggested implications for the paleoclimatic interpretation of deep ice cores recovered from the bottom part of polar ice sheets are given.

Carrying on from the work initiated over the I.G.Y. period by the United States glaciological parties at Wilkes (cf. Hollin and Cameron, 1961), members of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions have continued accumulation stake measurements to 80 km. inland on the plateau (lat. 66° 31′ S.) and extended them south 480 km. (to lat. 71° S.). These stake measurements, supplemented by pit data and surface observations, supply a comprehensive account of the accumulation in this region; how it builds up during the year, how it varies from year to year and how it is affected by topography.

Crack propagation in saline ice (a model sea ice) is investigated in this study in an attempt to understand the processes of crack growth at one loading rate and two temperatures. As has been previously observed in cold sea ice and warm or cold fresh-water ice, crack growth occurs in initiation/arrest increments. The energetic stability criteria of crack growth are examined in saline ice and crack growth is characterized in terms of the fracture-resistance parameter KR . This paper offers the development of a new fracture geometry capable of sustained stable crack growth and the presentation of fracture-resistance curves for saline ice at −25° and −15 C. The important findings of this paper are that: (i) in warm saline ice, extensive local crack-tip damage is accompanied by a limited amount of slow, stable crack extension; (n) fracture in cold saline ice is characterized by locally negative KR behavior; and (iii) fracture in cold or warm saline ice is characterized by globally positive KR curve behavior.

Data for daily ice ablation on two outlets from the Greenland ice sheet, Nordbogletscher (1979–83) and Qamanârssûp sermia (1980–86), are used to test a simple energy-balance model which calculates ablation from climate data. The mean errors of the model are only −1.1 and −1.3 mm water d−1 for Nordbogletscher (14 months) and Qamanârssûp sermia (21 months), respectively, with standard deviations of ±13.6 and ±18.9 mm water d−1 for calculating daily ablation. The larger error for Qamanârssûp sermia may be due to variations in ice albedo but the model also underestimates ablation during Föhn events.

According to the model, radiation accounts for about two-thirds of mean ablation for June-August at the two sites, while turbulent fluxes account for about one-third. The average ablation rate is higher at Qamanârssûp sermia than at Nordbogletscher because both sensible-heat flux and short-wave radiation are higher.

Over the last 25 years, radiowave detection of neutrino-generated signals, using cold polar ice as the neutrino target, has emerged as perhaps the most promising technique for detection of extragalactic ultra-high energy neutrinos (corresponding to neutrino energies in excess of 0.01 Joules, or 1017 electron volts). During the summer of 2021 and in tandem with the initial deployment of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G), we conducted radioglaciological measurements at Summit Station, Greenland to refine our understanding of the ice target. We report the result of one such measurement, the radio-frequency electric field attenuation length $L_\alpha$. We find an approximately linear dependence of $L_\alpha$ on frequency with the best fit of the average field attenuation for the upper 1500 m of ice: $\langle L_\alpha \rangle = ( ( 1154 \pm 121) - ( 0.81 \pm 0.14) \, ( \nu /{\rm MHz}) ) \,{\rm m}$ for frequencies ν ∈ [145 − 350] MHz.

The surface and bottom topography of the central Greenland ice sheet was determined from airborne ice-radar soundings over a 180 km by 180 km grid centered on the 1974 “Summit” site (lat. 72°18′N., long. 37°55′W.), using the Technical University of Denmark 60 MHz ice radar. Over 6100 km of high-quality radar data were obtained, covering over 99'% of the grid, along lines spaced 12.5 km apart in both north-south and east-west directions. Aircraft location was done with an inertial navigation system (INS) and a pressure altimeter, with control provided by periodically flying over a known point at the center of the grid. The ice radar was used to determine ice thickness; the surface topography was determined independently using height-above-terrain measurements from the aircraft’s radar altimeter. The calculated surface topography is accurate to about ±6 m, with this error arising mostly from radar-altimeter errors. The ice thickness and bottom topography are accurate to about ±50 m, with this error dominated by the horizontal navigation uncertainties due to INS drift; this error increases to about ±125 m in areas of rough bottom relief (about 12% of the grid).

The highest point on Greenland is at lat. 72°34′ N., long. 37°38′W., at an altitude of 3233 ± 6 m a.s.l. The ice surface at this point divides into three sectors, one facing north, one east-south-east, and one west-south-west, with each having a roughly uniform slope. The ice divide between the last two sectors is a well-defined ridge running almost due south. The ice is about 3025 m thick at the summit. Excluding the mountainous north-east corner of the grid, where the ice locally reaches a thickness of about 3470 m and the bed dips to about 370 m below sea-level, the maximum ice thickness, approximately 3375 m, occurs about 97 km south-south-west of the summit. The average bed altitude over the entire grid is 180 m and the average ice thickness is 2975 ± 235 m. The ice in most of the south-west quadrant of the grid is over 3200 m thick, and overlies a relatively smooth, flat basin with altitudes mostly below sea-level. There is no predominant direction to the basal topography over most of the grid; it appears to be undulating, rolling terrain with no obvious ridge/valley structure. The summit of the ice sheet is above the eastern end of a relatively large, smooth, flat plateau, about 10–15 km wide and extending about 50 km to the west. If the basal topography were the sole criterion, then a site somewhere on this plateau or in the south-west basin would be suitable for the drilling of a new deep ice core.

The effect of a basal water layer on the equilibrium dimensions of an ice sheet is examined. A thick water layer can decrease the equilibrium thickness of an ice sheet such as covers Antarctica (which contains no significant ablational areas) by a factor of the order of 2. Similar large changes in the equilibrium dimensions occur for ice-age ice sheets (which have extensive ablation areas). The extent of the ablation area of an ice-age ice sheet which may be covered with morainal debris is also calculated.

Observations of fall freeze-up and spring break-up, important to subarctic hydrology and to local economy, were made at the Yukon River town of Beaver, Alaska, September 1949 to June 1950. On October 15, with river temperature at 0° C., the freezing together of floating ice crystals formed thin ice pans that gradually thickened. Falling river level and increasingly heavy ice concentration choked off all but main channels. On 25 October ice jammed downstream and produced a continuous ice cover and a temporary rise of about 1 m. at Beaver. After 26 October the river resumed its drop in level until April. Freeze-up appears governed by local channel, current and weather conditions and lacks systematic progression either upstream or downstream.

Spring thaw beginning in late April thawed snow cover and weakened river ice. In early May the river began to rise slowly, but at an increasing rate, until 13 May when ice was nearly free from shore. On 14 May, after a rise of about 3 m. in 24 hours, the ice broke and moved downstream as the flood crest passed Beaver. Downstream progression of break-up is delayed by local ice jams, the chief cause of disastrous river floods, and is advanced by early break-up of large tributaries.

Samples were collected from a snow pit and shallow firn core near Kahiltna Pass (2970 m a.s.l.), Denali National Park, Alaska, USA, in May 2008. The record spans autumn 2003 to spring 2008 and reveals clusters of ice layers interpreted as summertime intervals of above-freezing temperatures. High correlation coefficients (0.75–1.00) between annual ice-layer thickness and regional summertime station temperatures for 4 years (n = 4) indicate ice-layer thickness is a good proxy for mean and extreme summertime temperatures across Alaska, at least over the short period of record. A Rex-block (aka high-over-low) pattern, a downstream trough over Hudson Bay, Canada, and an upstream trough over eastern Siberia occurred during the three melting events that lasted at least 2 weeks. About half of all shorter melting events were associated with a cut-off low traversing the Gulf of Alaska. We hypothesize that a surface-to-bedrock core extracted from this location would provide a high-quality record of summer temperature and atmospheric blocking variability for the last several hundred years.

Correcting a sign error results in no changes to the key conclusions of Hutchings and others (2011). However, there is an improved agreement with previous work. Mean total sea-ice deformation scales log linearly with distance and the scaling exponent was found to be dependent on time. We find a linear relationship between the temporal scale and spatial scaling exponent, for timescales of an hour to a day. Extrapolating to the timescales of deformation resolved by RADARSAT, we find total deformation and distance scale with an exponent of between −0.16 and −0.19.

Brittle ice, which occurs in all intermediate-depth and deep ice cores retrieved from high-latitude regions, presents a challenge for high-resolution measurements of water isotopes, gases, ions and other quantities conducted with continuous flow analysis (CFA). We present a novel method of preserving brittle ice for CFA stable water isotope measurements using data from a new ice core recovered by the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) project. Modest modification of the drilling technique and the accommodation of non-horizontal fractures (‘slanted breaks’) in processing led to a substantial improvement in the percentage of brittle ice analyzed with CFA (87.8%). Whereas traditional processing methods remove entire fragmented pieces of ice, our method allowed the incorporation of a total of 3 m of ice (1% of the 261 m of brittle ice and ~1300 years of climate history) that otherwise would not have been available for CFA. Using the RICE stable water isotope CFA dataset, we demonstrate the effect of slanted breaks and analyze the resulting smoothing of the data with real and simulated examples. Our results suggest that retaining slanted breaks are a promising technique for preserving brittle ice material for CFA stable water isotope measurements.

Gravity wants to pull an ice sheet to the center of the Earth, but cannot because the Earth’s crust is in the way, so ice is pushed out sideways instead. Or is it? The ice sheet “sees” nothing preventing it from spreading out except air, which is much less massive than ice. Therefore, does not ice rush forward to fill this relative vacuum; does not the relative vacuum suck ice into it, because Nature abhors a vacuum? If so, the ice sheet is not only pulled downward by gravity, it is also pulled outward by the relative vacuum. This pulling outward will be most rapid where the ice sheet encounters least resistance. The least resistance exists along the bed of ice streams, where ice-bed coupling is reduced by a basal water layer, especially if the ice stream becomes afloat and the floating part is relatively unconfined around its perimeter and unpinned to the sea floor. Ice streams are therefore fast currents of ice that develop near the margins of an ice sheet where these conditions exist. Because of these conditions, ice streams pull ice out of ice sheets and have pulling power equal to the longitudinal gravitational pulling force multiplied by the ice-stream velocity. These boundary conditions beneath and beyond ice streams can be quantified by a basal buoyancy factor that provides a life-cycle classification of ice streams into inception, growth, mature, declining and terminal stages, during which ice streams disintegrate the ice sheet. Surface profiles of ice streams are diagnostic of the stage in a life cycle and, hence, of the vitality of the ice sheet.
