We present a two-dimensional, coupled, mesoscale atmosphere–sea-ice model, and apply it to simulate the air–ice interaction during warm-air advection. The model was run into a steady state under various conditions with respect to the season, cloud cover and wind speed. The spatial and temporal evolution of the thermodynamics of the ice, snow and the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) were investigated. The development of the stably stratified ABL downwind of the ice edge depended above all on the wind speed and cloud cover. If the turbulent heat flux from air to snow was large enough to compensate the radiative cooling of the surface, a downward conductive heat flux was generated in the upper ice and snow layers. The stronger was the surface heating (strong wind, overcast skies) and the shorter its duration (on a scale down to a few hours), the wider was the region where this downward flux occurred. From the point of view of ABL modelling, the interactive coupling between air and ice was most important when the wind was strong, while from the point of view of ice thermodynamic modelling the coupling was most important when the wind was weak.

Rock glaciers in Teleki Valley on Mount Kenya exist above 4 000 m below steep valley walls where they are supplied with debris from avalanche couloirs. These valley-side rock glaciers consist of three or four lobes of rubble bounded by transverse furrows resulting from differential movement. No ice cores were observed in these rubble sheets, but “drunken forest” stands of Senecio keniodendron indicate the probable presence of interstitial ice resulting either from the metamorphism of snow buried under rockfall and slide-rock debris, or from freezing of water beneath the rock mantle. A geological survey of Mount Kenya in 1976 revealed that rock glaciers are anomalous in the Mount Kenya Afroalpine zone above 3 300 m. Analysis of weathering rinds indicates that several rock-glacier lobes were built up over a short interval of time at or near the end of the last glacial maximum (Würm). Oversteepened fronts on the westernmost lobes may have resulted from re-activation coinciding with the advance of glaciers during late Holocene time (<1 000 B.P.). Soils mantle 20% of the rock-glacier surface and have morphological characteristics comparable with soils forming on moraines of late Würm age in upper Teleki, Hausberg, and Mackinder Valleys.

A deep-ice temperature measurement program has been conducted on Trapridge Glacier, Yukon Territory. Large regions of temperate ice are predicted at the base of the otherwise cold glacier, The glacier snout, frozen to bedrock, appears to act as an ice dam allowing the build up of an ice reservoir in the upper regions. Thermal regulation of the surges of Trapridge Glacier is suggested and the relevance of basal temperatures in large surging glaciers is discussed.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys at a center frequency of 500 MHz were used to determine winter (2007/08) and net annual (2005–07) snow water equivalent (SWE) patterns across the upper parts of Belcher Glacier, Devon Ice Cap, Nunavut, Canada. The GPR measurements were validated against snow depths determined from avalanche probe measurements, and converted to SWE values using densities measured with a down-borehole neutron density probe and in shallow snow pits. Distinct internal reflection horizons (IRHs) in the GPR record were formed during warm summers in 2007 and 2005, and a large rain event in summer 2006 which caused ice to accumulate above the 2005 melt surface. Elevation provides the dominant control on winter SWE distribution across the basin, with surface topography (e.g. gullies) also being locally important. Based on the location where IRHs intersected the ice-cap surface, the basin-wide firn line occurred at an altitude of 1260–1300 m over the period 2005–08. Net mass balance across the accumulation area of Belcher Glacier averaged 0.24 m w.e. a−1 over the period 2005–07, mainly dependent on altitude. This is a little higher than most previous estimates for the period since the 1960s, although the differences lie within error limits.

By using a simple parameterized model of thermomechanically coupled flow in cold ice sheets, together with a physically based sliding law which includes a description of basal drainage, we show that relationships between ice flux and ice thickness can realistically be multi-valued, and hence that hydraulically induced surges can occur. We term this mechanism hydraulic run-away, as it relies on the positive feed-back between sliding velocity and basal melt production. For this feedback to operate, it is essential that water pressure increases with water storage. This is consistent with various recent ideas concerning drainage, under ice sheets, be it through a system of canals, a distnbuted film or a subglacial aquifer. For confined flows, such as valley glaciers (e.g. Trapridge Glacier) or topographically constrained ice streams (e.g. Hudson Strait in the Laurentide ice sheet), which are underlain by sufficiently deformable sediment, we can expect thermally regulated surges to occur, while in a laterally unconfined drainage basin (such as that which flows into the Ross Ice Shelf), we might expect ice streams to develop.

We show a strong difference in surface mass and energy balance of a mountain glacier and two sites on the ice sheet at 64°N in West Greenland using stake and automated weather station observations. Net surface mass balance is on average 2.2 m w.e. less negative at the coast compared with the ice sheet in the same elevation. We find a larger energy turnover at the ice sheet margin on Qamanarssup Sermia than measured on the coastal mountain glacier Qassigiannguit with both energy input and output being of larger absolute value. More cloudiness and a thicker snow cover at the relatively humid coastal glacier result in smaller gains in net-shortwave radiation and smaller losses in net-longwave radiation and a less negative mass balance. Lower wind speeds at the coastal glacier result in weaker turbulent heat exchange between atmosphere and ice surface. On annual average, 17 W m−2 more energy is available for melt at the ice-sheet margin compared with the coastal glacier in the same elevation.

Antarctic tabular icebergs are important active components of the ice–ocean system. To investigate the relevance of inherent ice dynamics to iceberg evolution, we developed a numerical model based on the fundamental equations of ice-shelf flow and heat transfer, forced by environmental parameters of the ice–ocean–atmosphere system. Model experiments with idealized icebergs of constant density show that the strain thinning rate for a typical iceberg with a thickness of 250 m and a temperature of −15°C is about 1 m a−1. Sensitivity studies for different scenarios of environmental conditions confirmed the reliability of our model. A 5 year simulation of the evolution of iceberg A-38B yielded a mean decrease in thickness from 220 m to 106.3 m, 95% of which was caused by basal melting, 1% by surface melting and 4% by strain thinning. We found iceberg spreading decelerating by about 75%, and ice temperatures being strongly affected by progressive erosion of the relatively warm basal layers and warming in the uppermost part. According to the model results, basal melting is the primary cause of change of iceberg geometry during drift, whereas strain thinning is only relevant in cold areas where basal melting is low.

The problem of ice flow over threedimensional basal irregularities is studied by considering the steady motion of a fluid with a linear constitutive equation over sine-shaped basal undulations. The undisturbed flow is simple shear flow with constant depth. Using the ratio of the amplitude of the basal undulations to the ice thickness as perturbation parameter, equations to the first order for the velocity and pressure perturbations are set up and solved.

The study shows that when the widths of the basal undulations are larger than 2–3 times their lengths, the finite width of the undulations has only a minor influence on the flow, which to a good approximation may be considered two-dimensional. However, as the ratio between the longitudinal and the transverse wavelength L/W increases, the three-dimensional flow effects becomes substantial. If, for example, the ratio of L to W exceeds 3, surface amplitudes are reduced by more than one order of magnitude as compared to the two-dimensional case. The L/W ratio also influences the depth variation of the amplitudes of internal layers and the depth variation of perturbation velocities and strain-rates. With increasing L/W ratio, the changes of these quantities are concentrated in a near-bottom layer of decreasing thickness. Furthermore, it is shown, that the azimuth of the velocity vector may change by up to 10° between the surface and the base of the ice sheet, and that significant transverse flow may occur at depth without manifesting itself at the surface to any significant degree.

The Wind River Range in Wyoming, USA, contains the largest concentration of glacial mass in the Rocky Mountains of the contiguous USA. Despite this distinction, only a few field or remotely sensed studies providing glacier volume changes have been published. The current study focuses on Continental Glacier located on the northern end of the range and uses two field datasets (high-accuracy GPS surface elevation points and ice-penetrating radar transects of the glacier bed) to create a three-dimensional model of glacier volume. Current surface elevations are compared with historical elevation data to calculate surface elevation change over time. An average thinning rate of 13.8 ± 7.8 m (0.30 ± 0.17 m a–1) between 1966 and 2012 was found. Surface elevation change rates varied across the glacier, ranging from +0.30 to –0.98 m a–1. Taking into account variable melt rates across the glacier, along with a glacial volume of 72.1 × 106 ± 10.8 × 106 m3, we estimate that Continental Glacier will be reduced in volume by 43% over the next 100 years and will disappear completely over the next 300–400 years, if current climatic conditions persist.

In this study we investigate the ability of the Regional Atmospheric Climate MOdel (RACMO) to represent temporal variations of Antarctic accumulation using weekly stake array measurements from Neumayer Station. The model uses European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts re-analysis data to force the atmospheric variables at the lateral boundaries of the model domain. Accumulation is defined as precipitation minus sublimation. Generally the model represents reasonably well the synoptic situations that lead to precipitation. The amounts of accumulation are, however, usually lower in the model than in the measurements. It cannot be determined whether the model underestimates precipitation or whether this effect is due to the redistribution of snow by the wind, which is not taken into account in the model but affects the accumulation at the measuring site. Significant differences between model and measurements also occur in cases of net ablation due to wind erosion or when accumulation at the stakes was due to snowdrift from the southwest without precipitation being observed.

Firn compaction models inform mass-balance estimates and paleo-climate reconstructions, but current models introduce key uncertainties. For example, models disagree on the dependence of density and compaction on accumulation rate. Observations of compaction to test these models are rare, partly because in situ methods for measuring englacial strain are time-consuming and expensive. Moreover, shallow measurements may confound strain due to compaction with strain due to ice-sheet flow. We show that phase-sensitive radio-echo sounder (pRES) systems, typically deployed to measure sub-shelf melting or ice-sheet deformation, can be used to measure firn compaction and test firn models. We present two complementary methods for extracting compaction information from pRES data, along with a method for comparing compaction models to pRES observations. The methods make different assumptions about the density structure and vary in their need for independent density measurements. Compaction profiles computed from pRES data collected on three ice rises in West Antarctica are largely consistent with measured densities and a physics-based model. With their minimal logistic requirements, new pRES systems, such as autonomous pRES, could be inexpensively deployed to monitor firn compaction more widely. Existing phase-sensitive radar data may contain compaction information even when surveys targeted other processes.

Drumlins, superimposed drumlins, and megadrumlins are considered to be part of a continuum of glacier bed forms, which is the product of changes in the stress applied by glaciers and the strength of bed material. Glacier behaviour can be inferred on the basis of this interpretation.

Spatio-temporal variations of the recently determined accumulation rate are investigated using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurements and firn-core studies. The study area is located on Ritscherflya in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, at an elevation range 1400–1560 m. Accumulation rates are derived from internal reflection horizons (IRHs), tracked with GPR, which are connected to a dated firn core. GPR-derived internal layer depths show small relief along a 22 km profile on an ice flowline. Average accumulation rates are about 190 kg m−2 a−1 (1980–2005) with spatial variability (1σ) of 5% along the GPR profile. The interannual variability obtained from four dated firn cores is one order of magnitude higher, showing 1σ standard deviations around 30%. Mean temporal variations of GPRderived accumulation rates are of the same magnitude or even higher than spatial variations. Temporal differences between 1980–90 and 1990–2005, obtained from two dated IRHs along the GPR profile, indicate temporally non-stationary processes, linked to spatial variations. Comparison with similarly obtained accumulation data from another coastal area in central Dronning Maud Land confirms this observation. Our results contribute to understanding spatio-temporal variations of the accumulation processes, necessary for the validation of satellite data (e.g. altimetry studies and gravity missions such as Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE)).

The problem of describing ice dynamics has been faced by many researchers; in this paper a fully three-dimensional model for ice dynamics is presented and tested. Using an approach followed by other researchers, ice is considered a non-linear incompressible viscous fluid so that a fluid-dynamic approach can be used. The model is based on the full three-dimensional Stokes equations for the description of pressure and velocity fields, on the Saint-Venant equation for the description of the free-surface time evolution and on a constitutive law derived from Glen’s law for the description of ice viscosity. The model computes the complete pressure field by considering both the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure components; it is time-evolutive and uses high-order numerical approximation for equations and boundary conditions. Moreover it can deal with both constant and variable viscosity. Three theoretical tests and two applications to Priestley Glacier, Antarctica, are presented in order to evaluate the performance of the model and to investigate important phenomena of ice dynamics such as the influence of viscosity on pressure and velocity fields, basal sliding and flow over perturbed bedrocks. All these applications demonstrate the importance of treating the complete pressure and stress fields.

Due to solute impurities and freezing-point depression in polycrystalline ice, a complicated and dynamic network of liquid water forms within the solid ice matrix at the boundaries between ice crystal grains. Impurity concentrations, temperature and pressure influence this network structure and impact physical, transport and rheological properties of ice. However, the nature of this internal network structure is not fully understood. Here we utilize nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of diffusion and magnetic relaxation to study the geometry and interconnectivity of the liquid-filled network in laboratory ice, formed from a 7 g L−1 NaCl solution, and its evolution due to recrystallization processes. Additionally, we apply these NMR measurements to observe the impact on ice microstructure of an ice-binding protein (IBP) excreted by the V3519-10 organism (Flavobacteriaceae family) isolated from the Vostok ice core in Antarctica. Recrystallization inhibition was observed as a function of IBP concentration. This work demonstrates the utility of advanced NMR techniques for applications to ice microstructure and has broader implications for understanding geophysical properties of cryospheric systems.

Two 10 cm lengths of firn core from the Dyer Plateau (70°31 ′S, 65°01 ′W), Antarctic Peninsula, were used to carry out a laboratory experiment to investigate the migration of methane sulphonate, the anion of methane sulphonic acid (MSA), in natural firn. Each length was cut vertically into four pieces, and a dopant solution containing Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, F− and MSA− pipetted onto the top of three sections, the fourth being kept as a blank. The doped sections were stored vertically, with the doped end uppermost, for 8 months at a range of temperatures (nominally –5°, –10° and –22°C) before subsampling at 1 cm resolution and analysis by ion chromatography. The two firn lengths were treated identically and the results were consistent. Profiles of the doped firn sections showed that C1−, NO3 and SO42− remained in the uppermost subsample, although the NO3− concentrations were variable compared to the blank. The F− profile shows slightly elevated concentrations in the second sample down compared to the blank, at temperatures of -10°C and above. The MSA− showed higher concentrations in the second, third and fourth samples down at -10°C and above, which indicates that some percolated downwards from its original position at the top of the core. This experiment shows that MSA is mobile in warm firn even over a short period of time. We propose that the mechanism for the mobility of MSA− in natural firn is via liquid MSA drainage, though we cannot yet discount vapour phase transport.

Wind-driven snow redistribution can increase the spatial heterogeneity of snow accumulation on ice caps and ice sheets, and may prove crucial for the initiation and survival of glaciers in areas of marginal glaciation. We present a snowdrift model (Snow_Blow), which extends and improves the model of Purves, Mackaness and Sugden (1999, Journal of Quaternary Science 14, 313–321). The model calculates spatial variations in relative snow accumulation that result from variations in topography, using a digital elevation model (DEM) and wind direction as inputs. Improvements include snow redistribution using a flux routing algorithm, DEM resolution independence and the addition of a slope curvature component. This paper tests Snow_Blow in Antarctica (a modern environment) and reveals its potential for application in palaeoenvironmental settings, where input meteorological data are unavailable and difficult to estimate. Specifically, Snow_Blow is applied to the Ellsworth Mountains in West Antarctica where ablation is considered to be predominantly related to wind erosion processes. We find that Snow_Blow is able to replicate well the existing distribution of accumulating snow and snow erosion as recorded in and around Blue Ice Areas. Lastly, a variety of model parameters are tested, including depositional distance and erosion vs wind speed, to provide the most likely input parameters for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.

Numerical models for sea-ice thickness distribution and velocity are used for ice-dynamics research and ice forecasting. In the modeling work, ERS-1 SAR is an excellent tool, in particular by providing spatial ice-velocity fields as described in the present Baltic Sea study. Ice velocities were extracted from SAR data with 3 and 6 day time intervals using the optical-flow method. A considerable stiffening of the ice pack was observed due to the change in the character of ice déformation under compression from rafting to ridging as the minimum ice thickness increased from 10 to 3O cm. The coastal alignment was strong in the ice motion and the coastal boundary layer width was 20-30 km. An analysis of the SAR data with an ice-dynamics model showed that the observed overall ice-velocity field could be produred using the Hibler viscous-plastic ice rheology. The compressive strength of the ice (over 10 km sc ales) was 2.5x 104 N m−2 ±50% for ridging and negligible for rafting of very thin ice. The shear strength was significant and the normal yield ellipse aspect ratio of 2 was valid. The 3 day time interval is val id for updating an ice model but for detailed ice-dynamics investigations a data frequency of 1 d−1 or higher would be preferable.

The translational vibrations of hypothetical ordered forms of ice Ic and ice Ih have been predicted and correlated with the known spectra of the actual disordered phases. The TO–LO splittings have been predicted by assuming that the changes of mean refractive indexes across the translational band is the same in all phases, and equal to the known change for ice Ih. Both ordered phases are predicted to have LO components at c. 275 and c. 310 cm-1. These predicted bands are assumed to be related to the bands at the same frequencies in the disordered phases. These bands are therefore LO components corresponding to the TO translational vibrations.
