Some observations which pertain to the interaction of ice and lake water in a high alpine environment and which were made in recent years in connection with hydroelectric projects and flood protection work are presented. In 1966, when the thin flat snout of Griesgletscher (Walliser Alpen) became submerged during the first filling of a newly constructed reservoir, waves of only very small amplitude were generated by the calving of a bout 150000 m3 of ice because most of the energy was dissipated by local turbulence. Far more spectacular waves have been experienced near steep ice cliffs in connection with work for flood control. For the design of an air bubbler system, air and water temperatures were measured in winter 1974–75 at Grimselsee, one of the largest reservoirs in the Bernese Alps. These measurements showed that the warmest water at the bottom of the lake was drained away during winter for the production of electricity. A strong temperature invenion forms in the air a bove the water behind the dam, as the lake level is lowered by several tens of metres.

Two models that estimate glacier ablation from simple meteorological observations are described. Both the energy-balance and bulk-aerodynamic approaches are used to determine the bulk-exchange coefficient for transfer of sensible- and latent-heat energy to the melting ice surface from 17 summer days of measurement on Ivory Glacier, New Zealand. The behaviour of the coefficient is examined over progressively increasing time intervals and as a function of wind speed and gradient, and of atmospheric stability. The models are verified with 36 d of independent data from a different summer on the same glacier. The more accurate short-term estimates of ablation are obtained using the energy-balance approach with empirically but independently derived values of the exchange coefficient.

Radio-echo observations have shown that polar ice in situ is birefringent. The most likely explanation of the birefringence is an anisotropy in the radio-frequency dielectric constant of the ice single crystal, combined with the ordering of the orientations of the ice crystals in polar ice. It is possible to calculate the birefringence of ice which has a distribution of crystal orientations using a technique similar to that used to derive the dielectric properties of heterogeneous media. The experimentally observed birefringence may then be shown to be consistent with the crystal orientation fabric at the site of the observations if the anisotropy of the dielectric constant is slightly less than 1%, that is, slightly less than the accuracy of the laboratory measurements which have failed to detect any anisotropy. Further experimental observations might be used to obtain information on not only the level of anisotropy of the single crystal but also on the crystal orientation fabric of the ice.

Surface and airborne radar sounding data were used to identify and map fields of bottom crevasses on the Ross Ice Shelf. Two major concentrations of crevasses were found, one along the grid-eastern grounding line and another, made up of eight smaller sites, grid west of Crary Ice Rise. Based upon an analysis of bottom crevasse heights and locations, and of the strength of radar waves diffracted from the apex and bottom corners of the crevasses, we conclude that the crevasses are formed at discrete locations on the ice shelf. By comparing the locations of crevasse formation with ice thickness and bottom topography, we conclude that most of the crevasse sites are associated with ice rises. Hence we have postulated that six ice rises, in addition to Crary Ice Rise and Roosevelt Island, exist in the grid-western sector of the ice shelf. These “pinning points” may be important for interpreting the dynamics of the West Antarctic ice sheet.

Oceanographic instruments suspended beneath the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, have recorded sporadic pressure decreases of 10–20 dbar over a few days at three sites where basal marine ice growth is expected. We attribute these events to flotation due to platelet ice accretion on the instrument moorings. Some events were transient, rapidly returning to pre-event pressures, probably through dislodgement of loosely attached crystals. Driven by these pressure changes, temperatures recorded by the shallowest instruments (within 20 m of the shelf base) tracked in situ freezing temperatures during the events. These observations provide indirect evidence for the presence of frazil ice in the sub-ice-shelf mixed layer and for active marine ice accretion. At one site we infer that a dense layer of platelet ice ˜1.5 m thick was accreted to the ice shelf over a 50 day period. Following some permanent abrupt pressure decreases (which we interpret as due to the lodgement of the uppermost instrument at the ice-shelf base), altered background trends in pressure suggest compaction rates of 3–4 m a–1 for the accreted basal platelet layer. Attachment of platelet ice and resulting displacement of moorings has ramifications for project design and instrument deployment, and implications for interpretation of oceanographic data from sub-ice-shelf environments.

Studies of the geomorphology and rock lichen development north of the Barnes Ice Cap prompt the conclusion that 70 per cent of this extensive, interior region was covered by permanent ice some 300 to 400 yr. ago. Contemporaneously the northern Barnes Ice Cap was significantly larger than today; it dammed up a lake in the upper Isortoq valley, over 80 km. long and up to 300 m. deep. Excluding the ice cap less than 2 per cent of the area is glacierized today; this represents a dramatic reduction in surface area of the former ice cover. Similarly, significant recession of the ice cap implies that glaciers of the “Baffin type” are in a less healthy budgetary state than hitherto has been assumed.

Proof of former extensive ice cover rests largely upon restricted rock lichen development. When sufficient time has elapsed for complete colonization, few indications of the former existence of an ice cover will remain. This type of glacierization may have affected large areas in the high Arctic. Absence of evidence of glaciation, therefore, cannot be relied upon to delimit nunatak areas (plant refugia) during the last glaciation.

It is believed that water-filled cavities on the scale of decimetres are present in a number of glaciers in Spitsbergen. The evidence for this hypothesis comes from airborne radio echo-sounding records collected by the Scott Polar Research Institute in 1983. The size of these cavities prevents the use of Rayleigh scattering theory and requires a more general analysis. Mie scattering theory is used to investigate the scattered power providing some unexpected results, the most significant of which is that for water bodies greater than approximately 0.25 m in radius the returned power from the volume illuminated is greater than that from a perfectly reflecting plane boundary.

We present a model for the determination of a sliding law in the presence of subglacial cavitation. This law determines the basal stress at a clean ice‒bedrock interface in terms of the velocity and effective pressure. The method is based on an exact solution of the Nye—Kamb (linearly viscous) sliding problem with cavities, and uses ideas of Lliboutry (1979) to construct, via renormalization methods, an approximate law for general bedrock form. We show that, for a bedrock whose spectrum has a power‒law behaviour, one obtains a sliding law which gives the basal shear stress proportional to a power of the velocity, and to a power of the effective pressure.

The effect of subglacial cavitation on the drainage system is examined, using recent ideas of Kamb. For sufficiently high velocities, drainage through a Röthlisberger tunnel system is unstable, and drainage takes place through the linked system of cavities. This leads to a reduction of the effective pressure, and by taking account of this, one can rewrite the sliding law in terms of stress and velocity only.

This sliding law can be multi‒valued, and it is suggested that this underlies the dynamic phenomenon of surges.

Seasonal variations in sodium concentrations have been measured on surface-pit snow samples and on firn and ice core samples from the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Site locations include J-9 (82° 22’ S., 168° 40’ W.), Roosevelt Island dome (79° 22’ S, 161° 40’ W), C-7-1 (78° 30’ S., 177° 00’ W.), and C-7-3 (78° 20’S., 179° 51’ E.). The predominant source for the Na is sea salt, indicated by greater concentration levels at seaward sites. Al concentrations of the order of only 10–9 g/g show that the input of continental dust is comparable to that at inland Antarctic locations, and that dust contributes only a negligibly small fraction of the Na on the shelf. Maximum Na concentrations occur in the winter or early spring, as is the case for Greenland ice. The annual accumulation-rate at J-9, determined by counting Na concentration peaks with depth, is 90 kg m–2 year–1, in agreement with rates determined radiometrically. Annual cycles in Na concentration are also detectable at depth in the J-9 ice core. It is suggested that Na concentration is a useful diagnostic criterion for distinguishing between East Antarctic ice (10–8 g Na/g), West Antarctic ice (30 × 10–9 g Na/g), and ice that fell as snow on the shelf itself (> 30 × 10–9g Na/g). The transition between snow that is chemically characteristic of the ice-shelf regime to snow of an inland regime is expected to occur near the 500 m elevation contour. This position is up to 200 km inland of the grounding line. A model is presented for the large-scale decrease in Na concentration with distance inland within the ice-shelf regime. Since deeper ice in Ross Ice Shelf cores originated generally further from the ocean, the up-stream origin of shelf ice may be estimated from the chemical profile. The Little America V ice-core chemistry profile shows no discontinuity as would be expected if a recent surge of West Antarctic ice had occurred.

For several types of polycrystalline ice of different origins, the spatial lattice orientation of each crystal was determined by measurements of both the a- and c-axis orientations. Analyses of the orientations of adjoining crystals showed that a great majority of adjoining crystals may be in a twinning relation. With special reference to the multi-maximum c-axis preferred-orientation fabric (the so-called “diamond pattern”), which is expected to occupy the largest part of a glacier ice mass, the crystal boundary structure was estimated. The preferred c-axis orientations of this fabric were explained as being the result of coincident oxygen-oxygen lines (hydrogen-bond lines) between adjoining crystals being concentrated in the orientations where seven oxygen-oxygen lines of one single crystal of ice are distributed. From the above result, it was concluded that the multi-maximum fabric is of the polycrystalline structure closest to the structure of a single crystal of ice among all the fabrics found in large ice masses.

It is found that the occurrence, in glaciers and ice sheets, of a multi-maximum fabric has a bias to the parts which have undergone a strong shear deformation for a long time. It is thus suggested that plastic deformation of ice with this fabric may be attributed to mechanical twinning due to a strong shear stress.

Satellite radar interferometry provides glaciologists with an important new tool for determining the motion and topography of large ice sheets. We examine the sources of error in interferometrically derived ice-motion measurements, including those errors due to inaccurate estimates of the interfero-metric baseline. Several simulations are used to assess baseline accuracy in terms of tie-point error and the number and distribution of tie points. These results give insight into how best to select tie points, and also demonstrate the level of accuracy that can be achieved. Examination of two representative cases likely to occur in mapping ice-sheet motion leads to the conclusion that with adequate tie-point information ice velocity can be measured accurately to within a few meters per year. A method to correct horizontal velocity estimates for the effect of vertical displacement using surface slopes is also developed. Finally, we estimate the single-component velocity field for an area on Humboldt Glacier, northern Greenland, using interferograms formed from ERS-1 SAR image. We estimatе that these velocity measurements are accurate to within 2.3 m year1.

Glaciological experiments have been carried out at Dôme du Goûter (4300 m a.s.l.), Mont Blanc, in order to understand the flow of firn/ice in this high-altitude Alpine glacierized area. Accumulation measurements from stakes show a very strong spatial variability and an unusual feature of mass-balance fluctuations for the Alps, i.e. the snow accumulation does not show any seasonal patterns. Measured vertical velocities which should match with long-term mean mass balance are consistent with observed accumulations. Therefore, the measurement of vertical velocities seems a good way of quickly obtaining reliable mean accumulation values for several decades in such a region.

A simple flow model can be used to determine the main flowlines of the glacier and to propose snow/ice age of core samples from the two boreholes drilled down tο the bedrock in June 1994. These results coincide with radioactivity measurements made to identify the well-known radioactive snow layers of 1963 and 1986. We can hope to obtain ice samples 55–60 years old about 20 or 30 m above the bedrock (110 m deep). Below, the deformation of the ice layers is loo great to be dated accurately.

Detailed measurements of the positions of stakes along the center-line of the lower Nisqually Glacier were made over a period of two years. Variations in the basal sliding speed were calculated from the measured changes in surface speed, surface slope, and thickness, using the glacier flow model of Nye (1952) and allowing for the effect of the valley walls, longitudinal stress gradients, and uncertainties in the flow law of ice. The flow is predominantly by basal sliding and has a pronounced seasonal variation of approximately ±25%. Internal deformation contributes progressively less to the total motion with distance up-glacier. Neither the phase nor the magnitude of the seasonal velocity fluctuations can be accounted for by seasonal variations in the state of stress within the ice or at the bed, and the variations do not correlate directly with the melt-water discharge from the terminus. A seasonal wave in the ice flow travels down the glacier at a speed too high for propagation by internal deformation or the pressure melting/enhanced creep mechanism of basal sliding.

The rate of sliding appears to be determined primarily by the amount of water in temporary storage in the glacier. The peak in sliding speed occurs, on the average, at the same time as the maximum liquid water storage of the South Cascade Glacier. The data support the idea that glaciers store water in the fall, winter and spring and then release it in the summer. This temporary storage may be greatest near the equilibrium line. The amount of stored water may increase over a period of years and be released catastrophically as a jökulhlaup. Any dependence of sliding on the basal shear stress is probably masked by the effect of variations in the hydrostatic pressure of water having access to the bed.

A finite-element solution of the time-dependent mass-continuity equation for column-averaged ice-sheet flow and sliding is applied to the Antarctic ice sheet. First, a calibration of the model to the steady-state present ice-sheet configuration is presented. With fitted values of the parameters describing the regions of sliding, the degree of bed coupling and the ice hardness, a change in the mean annual sea-level temperature is used to simulate variation of the climatic conditions over Antarctica for both warming and cooling of the climate. Paradoxically, a climate warming of up to 9 deg leads to an increase in ice volume, while cooling leads to decreasing ice volume as long as the present margins of Antarctica are maintained. Some extreme simulations of the Antarctic ice sheet for “maximum over-riding” and “minimum warm climate” are shown for situations where the present bed conditions are altered. Finally, a time-dependent simulation shows the response of the ice-sheet system to cyclical variations in the simulated climate, demonstrating the lag of the ice-sheet response to be approximately 2700 years.

A shallow firn core, recovered from the southern Patagonia ice cap (elevation 2680 m a.s.I.), has been analyzed for H stable isotope composition and for major soluble chemical compounds. The temperature measurement at 13.17 m depth (bottom of the core) shows that the ice cap is temperate. The chemical profiles indicate that some soluble impurities have been partly washed out by percolation, but seasonal deuterium content variations are relatively well preserved down to the bottom of the core, which allows the net accumulation rate of the site to be calculated (1.2 m water equivalent). The mean concentrations measured in the most recent year recorded (Cl−:4.85, nssSO42−: 0.65, NO3−:0.32, Na+:4.30, K+:0.64 and NH4+: 0.77, in μeq. 1−1) serve as a reference for the background chemical composition of precipitation at mid-southern latitudes under South Pacific meteorological conditions.

A necessary condition for a glacier to surge by thermal instability is that the glacier be cold with basal ice at or near the melting point. Deep temperature measurements show that two small surge-type glaciers in the Yukon Territory meet this requirement, but shallow measurements in three other surge-type glaciers suggest a temperate regime. If the latter observations are accepted, not all surges are thermally controlled: if a single mechanism accounts for all surges it cannot be thermal instability.

In this paper it is argued that thermal instability remains a viable mechanism for explaining surges of many cold glaciers, and that regardless of the underlying mechanism, thermal processes must at least have a major influence on the surge behavior of cold glaciers.

Two numerical modelling experiments are described. The first involves a one-dimensional model which shows that thermal control can account for the remarkably constant surge cycle found in some glaciers. The second, a two-dimensional model of the time-dependent temperature structure of a surge-type glacier, shows that the relative amounts of temperate and cold basal ice can change considerably as the surge cycle progresses. This variation alone may be sufficient to explain surges, but even if this is not the case, thermal processes must affect the timing of surges in many cold glaciers.

A compelling feature of the thermal instability mechanism is that it offers an explanation of the factors controlling the non-random geographical distribution of surge-type glaciers. For a glacier to have a cold surface and near-temperate bed, the ice thickness, temperature, and geothermal flux must be fortuitously related.

An approximate calculation is made of the rate at which a bottom crevasse in a cold ice shelf or tabular iceberg can close shut by freezing of water and can creep open through the creep deformation of ice. In all but the thickest ice shelves and icebergs, those with a thickness greater than about 400 m, the freezing process is the more important mechanism if the ice is cold (< – 10°C). Consequently in a cold iceberg or ice shelf a bottom crevasse, once formed, will freeze shut.

Consumer-grade digital cameras have become ubiquitous accessories of science. Particularly in glaciology, the recognized importance of short-term variability has motivated their deployment for increasingly time-critical observations. However, such devices were never intended for precise timekeeping, and their use as such needs to be accompanied by appropriate management of systematic, rounding and random errors in reported image times. This study describes clock drift, subsecond reporting resolution and timestamp precision as the major obstacles to precise camera timekeeping, and documents the subsecond capability of camera models from 17 leading manufacturers. We present a complete and accessible methodology to calibrate cameras for absolute timing and provide a suite of supporting scripts. Two glaciological case studies serve to illustrate how the methods relate to contemporary investigations: (1) georeferencing aerial photogrammetric surveys with camera positions time-interpolated from GPS tracklogs; and (2) coupling videos of glacier-calving events to synchronous seismic waveforms.

Using a series of combined compression–simple-shear experiments, it has been possible to investigate strain distributions and crystal-orientation fabrics related to varying layer orientation in ice. A variety of flattening strains accompanied by layer buckling, simple shear and the development of a lenticular layering are produced in anisotropic ice masses. In samples where the creep curve has only just reached a minimum strain rate, the c-axis preferred orientation is similar to that in the starting material, with specific c-axis concentrations affected by the extent of preserved host grains. At shear strains where γ ≤ 1, it was found that the c-axis preferred orientations were highly variable depending on the magnitude of strain, strain distribution and upon the modification and degree of rotation of initial c-axis preferred orientation. However, once recrystallization dominates in high-strain zones (γ ≥ 1), there is a rapid development of an asymmetric two-maxima fabric with little evidence of any contributions from inherited fabric elements. The final c-axis pattern is asymmetric with respect to the direction of shortening, with a strong maximum at ∼80° to the shear zone, with a sense of asymmetry in the direction of the shear, and a secondary maximum lying at ∼50° to the plane of shearing.

In the Northern Hemisphere, ice layers which have high microparticle concentrations (in particular late Wisconsin) are “softer” than modern or Holocene ice. Such ice deforms more readily in bore-hole tilt and closure measurements. This enhancement in flow, which is shown not to be related to c-axis concentration, has a maximum of three for late Wisconsin ice. The closure and tilt of a bore hole in the Agassiz Ice Cap, Ellesmere Island, drilled in 1977, has been followed every year since its drilling and the flow enhancement observed has been compared to the following quantities measured in the cores: concentration, δ(18O), crystal size, c-axis, Ca, Na, conductivity, and density. Flow enhancement of the ice age and bottom ice was found to be unrelated to c-axis concentration and density. Enhancement of flow is best related to microparticle (or Ca) concentration which in turn seems to be inversely related to crystal size. The latter relationship also seems to hold for the Devon Island Ice Cap and Greenland. In future, modellers of northern ice ages should use model ice that is three times softer than modern or Holocene ice.
