This Special Issue of the Journal of French Language Studies celebrates a recent surge in enthusiasm for sociolinguistic studies involving the regional languages of France. Taking our cue from the contributions to the volume, which we introduce here, we argue that a changing twenty-first century landscape offers an exciting new agenda for these regional languages (and minority languages more widely), and set out what we see as six key directions for contemporary research.

Writing on social media often departs from prescriptive norms through the use of non-standard words, spellings and punctuation. Amongst these traits is the repetition of letters (e.g. <ouiiiii> for oui ‘yes’). In this study, we draw upon a corpus of over 65 million tweets from three dialects of French (Laurentian, Metropolitan and Midi) to test phonological motivations for the choice of repeated letter in a word with repetition. Using mixed-effects multinomial regression, we compare dialectal differences in whether repetition targets final consonants (silent or pronounced), word-final orthographic <e> corresponding to phonological schwa, and prosodically accented penults. We demonstrate that repetition covertly signals phonological properties. We conclude that prosody mediates morphological and phonological effects and that grapheme-to-phoneme correspondences vary between regions, thereby producing phonological patterns that writers likely did not intend to convey at the time of writing. We also propose that orthographic repetition on Twitter has two prosodic sources: the default pitch accent in French (shifted or not) and focus.

This article describes the usage of partial interrogatives without wh such as And you went…? in French and Spanish, and analyses the variation between such in-situ-Ø and in-situ-wh-interrogatives such as And you went where? On the basis of an analysis of in-situ-Ø-interrogatives in a corpus of spoken French and Spanish, these interrogatives are described as a particularly efficient means of realizing an information request. Due to the fact that their use is bound to contexts in which the information request is highly expected by the hearer, they can be produced using a minimal syntactic format and simultaneously ensure that the addressee produces the desired response. In comparison, the use of in-situ-wh is less context-sensitive. The analysis also investigates the possibility of differences between French and Spanish as regards the productivity of these interrogatives. An acceptability study of these interrogatives finds no significant difference in terms of the productivity and acceptability of in-situ-Ø in French and Spanish, whereas in-situ-wh reaches a higher acceptability in French than in Spanish. I interpret these results as evidence for a description of in-situ-Ø as an ad-hoc interactional resource whose use does not depend on conventionalization processes, whereas information-requesting in-situ-wh has become conventional in French.

Partant de l’hypothèse de Coveney (1995) que la structure informationnelle influence la sélection de l’interrogative in situ ‘Tu fais quoi ?’ (SVQ), ce travail s’appuie sur les données du Corpus suisse de SMS (2009-2015) pour évaluer l’incidence des principes dits ‘End-Weight’ et ‘End-Focus’. En suivant l’étude de Coveney (1995), nous analyserons l’incidence des paramètres suivants : (i) longueur de la proforme Q et (ii) celle de la partie SVC; paramètres du (iii) Sujet, (iv) Verbe, (v) Complément; et (vi) identité du mot Q. Suite à l’analyse de 217 occurrences de SVQ (sur 425 QU), nos résultats corroborent, fût-ce avec quelques nuances, plusieurs tendances observées par Coveney (1995). En même temps, notre étude révèle que les tendances en cause, telles qu’elles s’observent dans le Corpus de SMS, prennent la forme plus extrême et tendent à fonctionner comme des environnements morphosyntaxiques à variabilité faible : en débouchant régulièrement sur l’emploi de SVQ, elles réduisent drastiquement les chances d’apparition d’autres variantes ex situ. Ces tendances s’expliqueraient par le fait qu’en français informel l’usage de SVQ est en train d’évincer d’autres variantes, principalement dans ces contextes linguistiques qui se sont avérés initialement propices à sa rapide propagation au 20e siècle (Farmer 2015).

This paper studies three thematic markers (TMs) in informal written French: pour ce qui est de, au niveau (de) and en matière de. We will demonstrate that they have different syntactico-semantic and discourse-functional properties and that the exact function of the TM construction results from the interplay between the inherent properties of the TM and the specific syntactic construction it appears in. We will demonstrate that TMs do not only introduce the aboutness-topics, but that they can also establish the frame in which the main clause holds or functions.

Dans cet article, nous analysons la variation dans l’emploi des exclamatives en QU-,1 qui ont pour marqueur exclamatif qu’est-ce que, ce que, comme et comment. Pour ce faire, nous adoptons l’approche variationniste et nous avons recours à un corpus de 45 films du cinéma de banlieue dont seulement 24 témoignent de la présence d’exclamatives en QU-. Ces 24 films couvrent la période de 1991 à 2019. Nous avons récolté 75 occurrences de phrases exclamatives correspondant à la variable étudiée, prononcées uniquement par des locuteurs vivant dans des cités HLM. Les résultats obtenus montrent la forte fréquence d’utilisation du marqueur comment (61 occurrences) par rapport aux autres marqueurs plus couramment rencontrés dans le français parlé du quotidien et qui est, par conséquent, au centre de notre attention dans cette étude.

L'acquisition des liaisons est bien documentée et a donné lieu à plusieurs théorisations, dont un modèle basé sur l'usage, essentiellement étayé sur des données expérimentales recueillies en contexte déterminant-nom. Notre but est d'examiner si ce modèle est généralisable à la liaison après les clitiques verbaux, deuxième grand contexte de liaison catégorique. Nous observons les productions de 205 enfants âgés de 3 à 6 ans recueillies dans le contexte de tâches expérimentales. L’étude permet de poser des repères sur l'acquisition de la liaison préverbale et de la comparer à la liaison prénominale.

L'article présente une recherche portant sur le fonctionnement de l'unité étrangement dans le discours, à partir des notions d'aspect et de stratégie discursive. L'approche adoptée vise à rendre compte du lien entre forme et sens par le biais de critères linguistiques et d'outils théoriques issus de la théorie de la polyphonie. Nous posons comme hypothèse que l'adverbe étrangement opère une sélection verbale sur la base de critères sémantiques aspectuels, et qui transparaît dans les propriétés distributionnelles des emplois. Ce faisant, il conditionne dans le même temps la structure polyphonique de l'énoncé dans lequel il apparaît.

Le français possède une structure syntaxique liée à ce qu'on pourrait appeler la ‘caractérisation intrinsèque d'un être', et illustrée par la phrase Clotilde a les yeux verts. La classe des substantifs compatibles avec la position d'objet direct dans cette structure est en principe limitée, du fait même du sens global dc celle-ci, aux mots désignant des ‘parties inaliénables d'animés’. Il est montré, cependant, que de nombreux substantifs, dont la définition ne comporte pas ce sème, peuvent être insérés dans la construction et y recevoir le sens de ‘comportement humain’ comme, par exemple, dans Le vainqueur a le triomphe modeste. On tient lè une illustration intéressante d'un phénomène d'influence sémantique du sens global attaché à une structure formelle sur le sens de l'un de ses constituants.

Souvent classé comme un argot obsolète des bouchers de la Villette, le louchébem, l’argot des bouchers de Paris, continue de se pratiquer beaucoup plus qu’on ne le croit. Cependant, il faut s’inquiéter de sa vitalité en raison du nombre sans cesse décroissant des bouchers traditionnels. Même si on peut citer quelques auteurs, force est de constater que l’argomuche a suscité peu de travaux. Ce projet documentaire, la première grande étude de terrain sur le louchébem, intègre les témoignages de 201 bouchers, interrogés sur leur lieu de travail (les boucheries artisanales de Paris et de sa petite couronne) à l’aide d’un questionnaire sociolinguistique, principal outil à notre disposition. Cet article en présente les premiers résultats : il rappelle d’abord le procédé de formation de cet argot à clé et esquisse l’histoire, ou plutôt l’origine, du louchébem ; il décrit ensuite la démarche méthodologique mise en œuvre pour recueillir les données et s’entretenir avec les bouchers ; enfin il identifie et analyse les fonctions pour lesquelles on utilise actuellement le louchébem dans la communauté linguistique que constitue la corporation bouchère parisienne.

Many Renaissance poets attempted to imitate classical verse metrics in their own vernaculars. This article examines the quantitative metrical verse of the French poet Baïf who is often criticized for producing unscannable verse using an incomprehensible phonetic orthography. This paper argues that the poet's rules for encoding length, while hermetic, are surprisingly consistent. It is demonstrated that Bai¨f's metrics derive largely from a system that is accentual with his orthography permitting the poet to encode quantitative distinctions that coincide with the metre. This article argues that Baïf's metrical verse provides us with a rare example of how prosody and rhythm in sixteenth century France might have been perceived.

French licenses word-final obstruent-liquid clusters (table /tabl/; souffre /sufʁ/). These clusters may be realised faithfully resulting in an apparent violation of the sonority sequencing principle (Clements, 1990). Yet, the clusters can also be repaired in one of two ways: (1) through the reduction of the cluster (i.e. [tab]) or (2) through the epenthesis of a schwa vowel, resyllabifying the cluster into the onset position (i.e. [ta.blə].) In this article, I investigate which factors condition the realisation of word-final obstruent-liquid clusters. The results are formalised in Maximum Entropy Grammar (Goldwater and Johnson, 2003), but evidence for effects of style and speaker age require the scaling of several constraints (Coetzee and Kawahara, 2013). This study sheds light on these curious clusters, while raising new questions about the interaction of grammatical and non-grammatical factors.

This is the first Special Issue of the Journal of French Language Studies, which will from now on have one thematic number per year. This issue is devoted to the acquisition of French as a second language.

It is often assumed that the emergence of a new concept can be traced to the appearance of a new word in a language. The aim of this article is to show that the process is more complex than this by examining the evolution of a number of words and contexts in the field of high altitude topography, when high mountains were being explored for the first time. This is a lexical field of a somewhat special nature, relating to a reality that had always been visible, but had never been described before. While there are undoubtedly examples where a concept crystallises around a newly adopted word, the norm is a slow process of uncertainty and hesitation.

In a language, suffix cohesion refers to the fact that suffixed words behave phonologically as simple or complex units depending on the suffix they are built with. This article uncovers a previously undescribed pattern of suffix cohesion in French, where words suffixed with vowel- and glide-initial suffixes behave phonologically like simple units (e.g. fêtiez [fet-je] ‘you partied’) and words built with other consonant-initial suffixes behave phonologically like complex units (e.g. fêterez [fɛt-ʁe] ‘you will party’). The evidence comes from a reassessment of well-known data on [ə]–[ɛ] stem alternations and from an acoustic study of [e]–[ɛ] and [o]–[ɔ] alternations in suffixed words as pronounced by 10 speakers living in the Paris area. The suffix’s phonological shape is found to provide the best account of the data among a set of factors that have been argued to be relevant to suffix cohesion in other languages (in particular resyllabification). The French pattern has important theoretical implications for theories of suffix cohesion as it is not prosodically conditioned. An alternative analysis in terms of paradigm uniformity is proposed, where suffixed words are treated as complex units phonologically if the suffix’s phonological shape facilitates the perceptual recognition of the base corresponding to the suffixed word’s stem.

Cet article a pour but d'examiner la diachronie des constructions interrogatives en qu'est-ce en ancien et en moyen français. Une attention plus particulière a été portée sur la forme en qu'est-ce que qui interroge sur du [-hum] complément: c'est de loin la forme la plus fréquente dans les textes. Mais cette forme est encore mouvante en ancien français. Il peut y avoir des omissions du pronom sujet: qu'est-ce que dit avez? La place de l'élément ce peut varier; il peut se trouver antéposé ou postposé au pronom interrogatif: ce que est que vos dites? que ce est que vos dites? Par ailleurs, les verbes recteurs employés dans la construction sont restreints: on y trouve essentiellement des verbes de dire. Le système des formes commence sans doute à se grammaticaliser en moyen français. La variation de la place de ce se restreint. Les verbes recteurs se diversifient. On observe également un changement graphique: on peut trouver une graphie esse qui agglutine le verbe être et ce.

Les inputs audiovisuels tels que les films et les séries sont de plus en plus souvent utilisés dans les cours de langue étrangère (LE) car ils permettent une exposition authentique à la langue. Plusieurs études suggèrent qu’ils soutiennent l’apprentissage de nouveaux mots, mais que l’inclusion d’activités de pré-/post-visionnage pourrait renforcer cet apprentissage. La présente étude a été menée en Suisse alémanique et s’intéresse à l’effet de la présence et du placement d’une telle activité sur l’apprentissage de 51 mots cibles. Dans une étude within-design, 97 apprenants de français langue étrangère de 13–14 ans ont regardé trois extraits de la série télévisée « Plan Cœur » (Netflix, 2018). Les trois conditions étaient : épisode seul, épisode et activité avant, épisode et activité après. Les activités portaient sur la reconnaissance du sens des mots cibles. Trois post-tests immédiats et un post-test différé du même type (reconnaissance de sens) ont été effectués auprès des quatre classes de niveau scolaire supérieur (classes générales et prégymnasiales/GPG) et des deux classes de niveau scolaire inférieur (classes à exigences de base/EBA). Nos résultats confirment la supériorité des conditions avec activité ainsi qu’une différence (peu surprenante) selon le niveau scolaire. On trouve aussi une interaction entre le moment de test et condition avec plus de réponses correctes aux post-tests immédiats. La différence entre activité pré et post est cependant négligeable. Ces résultats soulignent l’importance des activités pré-/post-visionnage pour l’apprentissage de nouveaux mots en LE.

Non-standard orthography on social media provides a useful supplementary data source for sociophonetic research. Regarding an ongoing chain shift in Northern Metropolitan French nasal vowels, spellings reflecting shifted vowel targets are observed on Twitter. These non-standard spellings, e.g. avont [avɔ̃] for avant /avɑ̃/ ‘before’, provide insight into speakers’ awareness of this change and its lexical distribution. Tweets with shifted and standard spellings of 306 word forms containing the phonemes /ɛ̃/, /œ̃/, /ɑ̃/ and /ɔ̃/ were collected from an 870-million word Internet Archive corpus of French tweets from 2011–2017. Shifted spellings were found for all four vowels and 168 words. The shifted spelling rate is lower than that of comparable variables in English and is not conditioned by stress, grammatical category, frequency, or phonological context, which affect the distribution of shifted nasal vowels in speech. However, frequent words show more indications of intentional misspelling, such as repetition and capitalization of the target vowel, suggesting that some speakers are conscious of the variation and comment on it using salient words. The results also contribute to an ongoing debate about a possible merger between /ɛ̃/ and /œ̃/, supporting the hypothesis of an incomplete merger where /ɛ̃/ shifts towards [ɑ̃] but /œ̃/ does not.

This article focuses on the behaviour of negation and clitics in the context of French imperatives. Standard descriptions contrast positive Fais-le ! (with enclisis) with negative (Ne) le fais pas ! (with proclisis). I adopt a view of imperatives in terms of a pragmatic irrealis mood feature associated with Rizzi's (1997) exploded CP and defective/impoverished morphology which allows inflection and irrealis mood features to be checked on a single functional head. Thus, positive imperatives can check all their grammatical features before merger of any clitics, which (following Shlonsky, 2004) will therefore be enclitic. The presence of negation, when realised as a grammatical feature on an (overt or null) functional head within the clausal trunk, prevents this from happening because negation intervenes between the relevant inflection and mood features in the universal hierarchy underlying the Rizzi/Cinque exploded CP/IP. Outside cliticisation contexts, the difference has no surface impact: Viens ! vs. (Ne) viens pas ! In cliticisation contexts, in contrast, there is a surface difference: negative imperatives cannot check all their inflectional features at the point at which clitics are merged, and clitics will not therefore be enclitic. Regionally/stylistically marked forms like Fais-le pas !, in which proclisis and negation co-occur, must be deemed to have a radically different structure, with no negative feature projected within the inflectional domain. Such forms are argued to be a natural (and therefore expected) innovation within Jespersen's cycle of diachronic development.

Depuis plus d’un siècle, les linguistes débattent de la disparition du passé simple. Le PS est un paradigme moribond pour les uns, une forme d’emploi toujours restreint ou encore en voie de spécialisation pour d’autres. La discussion sur le devenir du PS ne prend cependant son sens que sous un éclairage diachronique. Le présent article examine donc les emplois du PS au travers de l’histoire de la langue française. Si le PS a perdu une fonction depuis l’ancien français et est sorti de l’oral spontané, il n’en jouit pas moins d’une place privilégiée dans certains contextes (narration) et cotextes (3èmes personnes). Le tiroir semble même avoir récemment investi de nouvelles formes d’expression, comme le storytelling en mercatique. L'étude conclut en suggérant des pistes de recherche pour évaluer la position réelle du PS en français contemporain.
