Kinetic energy transfer in compressible isotropic turbulence is studied using numerical simulations with solenoidal forcing at turbulent Mach numbers ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 and at a Taylor Reynolds number of approximately 250. The pressure dilatation plays an important role in the local conversion between kinetic energy and internal energy, but its net contribution to the average kinetic energy transfer is negligibly small, due to the cancellation between compression and expansion work. The right tail of probability density function (PDF) of the subgrid-scale (SGS) flux of kinetic energy is found to be longer at higher turbulent Mach numbers. With an increase of the turbulent Mach number, compression motions enhance the positive SGS flux, and expansion motions enhance the negative SGS flux. Average of SGS flux conditioned on the filtered velocity divergence is studied by numerical analysis and a heuristic model. The conditional average of SGS flux is shown to be proportional to the square of filtered velocity divergence in strong compression regions for turbulent Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.0. Moreover, the antiparallel alignment between the large-scale strain and the SGS stress is observed in strong compression regions. The inter-scale transfer of solenoidal and compressible components of kinetic energy is investigated by Helmholtz decomposition. The SGS flux of solenoidal kinetic energy is insensitive to the change of turbulent Mach number, while the SGS flux of compressible kinetic energy increases drastically as the turbulent Mach number becomes larger. The compressible mode persistently absorbs energy from the solenoidal mode through nonlinear advection. The kinetic energy of the compressible mode is transferred from large scales to small scales through the compressible SGS flux, and is dissipated by viscosity at small scales.

The reflection of internal gravity waves at sloping boundaries leads to focusing or defocusing. In closed domains, focusing typically dominates and projects the wave energy onto ‘wave attractors’. For small-amplitude internal waves, the projection of energy onto higher wavenumbers by geometric focusing can be balanced by viscous dissipation at high wavenumbers. Contrary to what was previously suggested, viscous dissipation in interior shear layers may not be sufficient to explain the experiments on wave attractors in the classical quasi-two-dimensional trapezoidal laboratory set-ups. Applying standard boundary layer theory, we provide an elaborate description of the viscous dissipation in the interior shear layer, as well as at the rigid boundaries. Our analysis shows that even if the thin lateral Stokes boundary layers consist of no more than 1 % of the wall-to-wall distance, dissipation by lateral walls dominates at intermediate wave numbers. Our extended model for the spectrum of three-dimensional wave attractors in equilibrium closes the gap between observations and theory by Hazewinkel et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 598, 2008, pp. 373–382).

A three-dimensional linear stability analysis is carried out for a convecting layer in which both the temperature and solute distributions are linear in the horizontal direction. The three-dimensional results show that, for $Le=3$ and 100, the most unstable mode occurs invariably as the longitudinal mode, a vortex roll with its axis perpendicular to the longitudinal plane, suggesting that the two-dimensional results are sufficient to illustrate the stability characteristics of the convecting layer. Two-dimensional results show that the stability boundaries of the transverse mode (a vortex roll with its axis perpendicular to the transverse plane) and the longitudinal modes are virtually overlapped in the regime dominated by thermal diffusion and the regime dominated by solute diffusion, while these two modes hold a significant difference in the regime the salt-finger instability prevails. More precisely, the instability area in terms of thermal Grashof number $Gr$ and solute Grashof number $Gs$ is larger for the longitudinal mode than the transverse mode, implying that, under any circumstance, the longitudinal mode is always more unstable than the transverse mode.

In the present study, direct numerical simulation (DNS) is carried out in a minimal channel at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=2000$ to sustain healthy turbulence below $y^{+}=100$. Turbulence intensities are compared with those of the motions at the same scales as the minimal channel in the full-sized channel at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=2003$ (Hoyas & Jiménez, Phys. Fluids, vol. 20 (10), 2008, article 101511). They show good agreement in $y^{+}<100$. The universal signals for the three velocity components similar to that in the predictive model of Marusic et al. (Science, vol. 329 (5988), 2010, pp. 193–196) are extracted from the DNS data of the full-sized channel. They correspond well to the near-wall velocity fluctuations in the minimal flow unit (MFU). The predictive models for the three components of near-wall velocity fluctuations are proposed based on the MFU data. The predicted turbulence intensities as well as the joint probability density functions of velocity fluctuations agree well with the DNS results of the full-sized channel turbulence.

Observations, numerical simulations and theoretical scaling arguments suggest that in mid-latitudes, away from the source regions and the equator, the meridional transport of abyssal water masses along a continental slope corresponds to planetary geostrophic flows that are gravity- or density-driven and topographically steered. We investigate these dynamics using a nonlinear reduced-gravity model that can describe grounded abyssal meridional flow over sloping topography that crosses the planetary vorticity gradient. Exact nonlinear steady and time-dependent solutions are obtained. The general steady theory is illustrated for a non-parallel equatorward flow that possesses a single along-slope grounding along the upslope flank of the current (complementing previous work). Four specific nonlinear time-dependent solutions are described. Two initial-value problems are solved exactly. The first initial configuration corresponds to an equatorward abyssal flow that has no cross-slope shear in the along-slope velocity and possesses a single grounding along the upslope flank of the current. The nonlinear time-dependent evolution of this initial current into a non-parallel shear flow is described. The second initial condition corresponds to an isolated radially symmetric grounded abyssal pool or dome. The nonlinear time-dependent evolution of this abyssal dome, which propagates equatorward with unsteady along- and cross-slope velocities while deforming into an elliptically shaped abyssal dome with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$-induced diminishing height, is described. Finally, the nonlinear time-dependent boundary-value problem can be solved exactly in which the in-flow boundary condition on the poleward boundary of the mid-latitude domain corresponds to a time-dependent abyssal current with both an upslope and downslope grounding. Two specific time-dependent boundary conditions are examined. The first corresponds to a time-limited surge in the equatorward volume transport in the abyssal current along the poleward boundary. The second configuration corresponds to the nonlinear evolution of a finite-amplitude downslope plume or loop that forms in the abyssal current that is reminiscent of those seen in baroclinic instability simulations.

Generalised Navier–Stokes (GNS) equations describing three-dimensional active fluids with flow-dependent narrow spectral forcing have been shown to possess numerical solutions that can sustain significant energy transfer to larger scales by realising chiral Beltrami-type chaotic flows. To rationalise these findings, we study here the triad truncations of polynomial and Gaussian GNS models focusing on modes lying in the energy injection range. Identifying a previously unknown cubic invariant for the triads, we show that their asymptotic dynamics reduces to that of a forced rigid body coupled to a particle moving in a magnetic field. This analogy allows us to classify triadic interactions by their asymptotic stability: unstable triads correspond to rigid-body forcing along the largest and smallest principal axes, whereas stable triads arise from forcing along the middle axis. Analysis of the polynomial GNS model reveals that unstable triads induce exponential growth of energy and helicity, whereas stable triads develop a limit cycle of bounded energy and helicity. This suggests that the unstable triads dominate the initial relaxation stage of the full hydrodynamic equations, whereas the stable triads determine the statistically stationary state. To test whether this hypothesis extends beyond polynomial dispersion relations, we introduce and investigate an alternative Gaussian active turbulence model. Similar to the polynomial case, the steady-state chaotic flows in the Gaussian model spontaneously accumulate non-zero mean helicity while exhibiting Beltrami statistics and upward energy transport. Our results suggest that self-sustained Beltrami-type flows and an inverse energy cascade may arise generically in the presence of flow-dependent narrow spectral forcing.

We present experiments and numerical simulations for an elementary paradigm of disperse multiphase flow: highly dilute, homogeneous, finite-dimension clouds of particles (curtains) hit by shock/blast waves in one dimension. In the experiments (particle volume fraction ${<}1\,\%$) the blasts that follow the shocks vary from low subsonic to supersonic, and we report data on curtain expansions and volume fraction distributions. The particle-resolving numerical simulations, run for the supersonic case, yield excellent agreement with all of these experimental data. We find that the essential feature for these good predictions is a flow choking phenomenon that entails a (particle) dispersive character of the flow down a volume fraction gradient (as at the downstream portions of the curtain). A most basic effective-field model is made to capture this gas dynamics by emulating the wake behind each particle, as seen in the particle-resolving direct Euler simulation (DES). On this basis, standard drag laws yield excellent agreement with the dispersive behaviour found in the experiment/DES, thus revealing a physics-based path to eventual well posedness of the mathematical model.

Vertical axis wind turbine blades are subject to rapid, cyclical variations in angle of attack and relative airspeed which can induce dynamic stall. This phenomenon poses an obstacle to the greater implementation of vertical axis wind turbines because dynamic stall can reduce turbine efficiency and induce structural vibrations and noise. This study seeks to provide a more comprehensive description of dynamic stall in vertical axis wind turbines, with an emphasis on understanding its parametric dependence and scaling behaviour. This problem is of practical relevance to vertical axis wind turbine design but the inherent coupling of the pitching and velocity scales in the blade kinematics makes this problem of more broad fundamental interest as well. Experiments are performed using particle image velocimetry in the vicinity of the blades of a straight-bladed gyromill-type vertical axis wind turbine at blade Reynolds numbers of between 50 000 and 140 000, tip speed ratios between $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=1$ to $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=5$, and dimensionless pitch rates of $0.10\leqslant K_{c}\leqslant 0.20$. The effect of these factors on the evolution, strength and timing of vortex shedding from the turbine blades is determined. It is found that tip speed ratio alone is insufficient to describe the circulation production and vortex shedding behaviour from vertical axis wind turbine blades, and a scaling incorporating the dimensionless pitch rate is proposed.

Contact-line mobility characterizes how fast a liquid can wet or unwet a solid support by relating the contact angle $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ to the contact-line speed $U_{CL}$. The contact angle changes dynamically with contact-line speeds during rapid movement of liquid across a solid. Speeds beyond the region of stick–slip are the focus of this experimental paper. For these speeds, liquid inertia and surface tension compete while damping is weak. The mobility parameter $M$ is defined empirically as the proportionality, when it exists, between $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ and $U_{CL}$, $M\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=U_{CL}$. We discover that $M$ exists and measure it. The experimental approach is to drive the contact line of a sessile drop by a plane-normal oscillation of the drop’s support. Contact angles, displacements and speeds of the contact line are measured. To unmask the mobility away from stick–slip, the diagram of $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ against $U_{CL}$, the traditional diagram, is remapped to a new diagram by rescaling with displacement. This new diagram reveals a regime where $\unicode[STIX]{x0394}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is proportional to $U_{CL}$ and the slope yields the mobility $M$. The experimental approach reported introduces the cyclically dynamic contact angle goniometer. The concept and method of the goniometer are illustrated with data mappings for water on a low-hysteresis non-wetting substrate.

A thick turbulent annular liquid layer that swirls inside a fixed pipe is studied by means of surface observations and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry in an index-matched nozzle facility. This flow combines the complexities of swirling and free-surface turbulence. The free surface of the layer changes the boundary condition compared to filled swirling pipes and introduces the equivalent of a hollow core. The liquid layer shares similarities with turbulent open-channel flows, with the high centrifugal force across the layer having a similar effect to that of gravity in channel flows. At the surface, the restoring forces are surface tension and centrifugal acceleration. The particular nozzle under study has been envisioned for inertial confinement fusion, but the flow has relevance to systems such as compact separators or liquid rocket fuel injectors. Data are acquired at five downstream locations from the nozzle exit for four Reynolds numbers for subcritical flows. Injection flow rate and fluid kinematic viscosity are controlled independently, which allows adjusting independently the Reynolds and Taylor–Reynolds numbers. This also enables control of the centrifugal force at the free surface to test the effects of turbulence intensity on the free surface in regimes where air entrainment and droplet ejection occur. The swirl number is fixed by the design of the nozzle. From velocimetry data, mean velocity and turbulence statistics are extracted. For all the conditions tested, three flow regimes are identified: developing, developed, and transitional. The developed regime appears self-similar on the mean; the swirl creates a favourable pressure gradient that sustains the axial flow and confines the boundary layer near the wall. Large coherent vortex structures are identified in the layer. A simple model is proposed to describe the layer thickness and the velocity distribution in it. In the transitional regime, helical varicose waves generated by centrifugal instability are observed on the surface. Additionally, wall effects are visible in the bulk of the flow, and the main flow features are large overturning motions.

Previous numerical studies on homogeneous Rayleigh–Bénard convection, which is Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC) without walls, and therefore without boundary layers, have revealed a scaling regime that is consistent with theoretical predictions of bulk-dominated thermal convection. In this so-called asymptotic regime, previous studies have predicted that the Nusselt number ($\mathit{Nu}$) and the Reynolds number ($\mathit{Re}$) vary with the Rayleigh number ($\mathit{Ra}$) according to $\mathit{Nu}\sim \mathit{Ra}^{1/2}$ and $\mathit{Re}\sim \mathit{Ra}^{1/2}$ at small Prandtl numbers ($\mathit{Pr}$). In this study, we consider a flow that is similar to RBC but with the direction of temperature gradient perpendicular to gravity instead of parallel to it; we refer to this configuration as vertical natural convection (VC). Since the direction of the temperature gradient is different in VC, there is no exact relation for the average kinetic dissipation rate, which makes it necessary to explore alternative definitions for $\mathit{Nu}$, $\mathit{Re}$ and $\mathit{Ra}$ and to find physical arguments for closure, rather than making use of the exact relation between $\mathit{Nu}$ and the dissipation rates as in RBC. Once we remove the walls from VC to obtain the homogeneous set-up, we find that the aforementioned $1/2$-power-law scaling is present, similar to the case of homogeneous RBC. When focusing on the bulk, we find that the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers in the bulk of VC too exhibit the $1/2$-power-law scaling. These results suggest that the $1/2$-power-law scaling may even be found at lower Rayleigh numbers if the appropriate quantities in the turbulent bulk flow are employed for the definitions of $\mathit{Ra}$, $\mathit{Re}$ and $\mathit{Nu}$. From a stability perspective, at low- to moderate-$\mathit{Ra}$, we find that the time evolution of the Nusselt number for homogenous vertical natural convection is unsteady, which is consistent with the nature of the elevator modes reported in previous studies on homogeneous RBC.

This paper studies the mechanisms of dispersion in the laminar flow through the pore space of a three-dimensional porous medium. We focus on preasymptotic transport prior to the asymptotic hydrodynamic dispersion regime, in which solute motion may be described by the average flow velocity and a hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient. High-performance numerical flow and transport simulations of solute breakthrough at the outlet of a sand-like porous medium evidence marked deviations from the hydrodynamic dispersion paradigm and identify two distinct regimes. The first regime is characterised by a broad distribution of advective residence times in single pores. The second regime is characterised by diffusive mass transfer into low-velocity regions in the wake of solid grains. These mechanisms are quantified systematically in the framework of a time-domain random walk for the motion of marked elements (particles) of the transported material quantity. Particle transitions occur over the length scale imprinted in the pore structure at random times given by heterogeneous advection and diffusion. Under globally advection-dominated conditions, i.e., Péclet numbers larger than 1, particles sample the intrapore velocities by diffusion and the interpore velocities through advection. Thus, for a single transition, particle velocities are approximated by the mean pore velocity. In order to quantify this advection mechanism, we develop a model for the statistics of the Eulerian velocity magnitude based on Poiseuille’s law for flow through a single pore and for the distribution of mean pore velocities, both of which are linked to the distribution of pore diameters. Diffusion across streamlines through immobile zones in the wake of solid grains gives rise to exponentially distributed residence times that decay on the diffusion time over the pore length. The trapping rate is determined by the inverse diffusion time. This trapping mechanism is represented by a compound Poisson process conditioned on the advective residence time in the proposed time-domain random walk approach. The model is parameterised with the characteristics of the porous medium under consideration and captures both preasymptotic regimes. Macroscale transport is described by an integro-differential equation for solute concentration, whose memory kernels are given in terms of the distribution of mean pore velocities and trapping times. This approach quantifies the physical non-equilibrium caused by a broad distribution of mass transfer time scales, both advective and diffusive, on the representative elementary volume (REV). Thus, while the REV indicates the scale at which medium properties like porosity can be uniquely defined, this does not imply that transport can be characterised by hydrodynamic dispersion.

Problems of particle dynamics involving unsteady Stokes flows in confined geometries are typically harder to solve than their steady counterparts. Approximation techniques are often the only resort. Felderhof (see e.g. J. Phys. Chem. B, vol. 109 (45), 2005, pp. 21406–21412; J. Fluid Mech., vol. 637, 2009, pp. 285–303) has developed a point-particle approximation framework to solve such problems, especially in the context of Brownian motion. Despite excellent agreement with past experiments, this framework produces unsteady drag coefficients that depend on particle density. This is inconsistent, since the problem can be formulated mathematically without any reference to the particle’s density. We address this inconsistency in our work. Upon implementing our modifications, the framework passes consistency checks that it previously failed. Further, it is not obvious that such an approximation should work for short-time-scale motion. We investigate its validity by deriving it from a general formalism based on integral equations through a series of systematic approximations. We also compare results from the point-particle framework against a calculation performed using the method of reflections, for the specific case of a sphere near a full-slip plane boundary. We find from our analysis that the reasons for the success of the point-particle approximation are subtle and have to do with the nature of the unsteady Oseen tensor. Finally, we provide numerical predictions for Brownian motion near a full-slip and a no-slip plane wall based on the point-particle approximation as used by Felderhof, our modified point-particle approximation and the method of reflections. We show that our modifications to Felderhof’s framework would become significant for systems of metallic nanoparticles in liquids.

We discuss instabilities of fluid films of nanoscale thickness, with a particular focus on films where the destabilising mechanism allows for linear instability, metastability, and absolute stability, depending on the mean film thickness. Our study is motivated by nematic liquid crystal films; however, we note that similar instability mechanisms, and forms of the effective disjoining pressure, appear in other contexts, such as the well-studied problem of polymeric films on two-layered substrates. The analysis is carried out within the framework of the long-wave approximation, which leads to a fourth-order nonlinear partial differential equation for the film thickness. Within the considered formulation, the nematic character of the film leads to an additional contribution to the disjoining pressure, changing its functional form. This effective disjoining pressure is characterised by the presence of a local maximum for non-vanishing film thickness. Such a form leads to complicated instability evolution that we study by analytical means, including the application of marginal stability criteria, and by extensive numerical simulations that help us develop a better understanding of instability evolution in the nonlinear regime. This combination of analytical and computational techniques allows us to reach novel understanding of relevant instability mechanisms, and of their influence on transient and fully developed fluid film morphologies. In particular, we discuss in detail the patterns of drops that form as a result of instability, and how the properties of these patterns are related to the instability mechanisms.

Macroscopic models based on moment equations are developed to describe the transport of mass and energy near the phase boundary between a liquid and its rarefied vapour due to evaporation and hence, in this study, condensation. For evaporation from a spherical droplet, analytic solutions are obtained to the linearised equations from the Navier–Stokes–Fourier, regularised 13-moment and regularised 26-moment frameworks. Results are shown to approach computational solutions to the Boltzmann equation as the number of moments are increased, with good agreement for Knudsen number ${\lesssim}1$, whilst providing clear insight into non-equilibrium phenomena occurring adjacent to the interface.

The two-dimensional dynamics of a thin film of viscous fluid spreading between a permeable horizontal plate and an overlying thin elastic sheet is explored. We use a lubrication model to describe the balance between the elastic stress, the hydrostatic pressure gradient and the viscous resistance of the flow, as fluid spreads laterally from a source and simultaneously drains through the plate. A family of asymptotic solutions are described in which the flow is dominated by either the hydrostatic pressure gradient or the elastic stress associated with the deformation of the sheet. In these solutions, although the deformation of the sheet above the porous plate arises from the fluid flow below the sheet, the fluid typically separates from the sheet a short distance upstream of the full extent of the draining zone, with the region of flow being driven purely by the hydrostatic pressure gradient. As a result, an air gap develops below the sheet up to the point where it touches back down onto the plate. With a very light or stiff elastic sheet, this touchdown point may extend far beyond the fluid draining zone, but otherwise it is similar to the extent of the draining zone.

The generalised Kolmogorov equation is used to describe the scale-by-scale turbulence dynamics in the shear layer and in the separation bubble generated by a bulge at one of the walls in a turbulent channel flow. The second-order structure function, which is the basis of such an equation, is used as a proxy to define a scale-energy content, that is an interpretation of the energy associated with a given scale. Production and dissipation regions and the flux interchange between them, in both physical and separation space, are identified. Results show how the generalised Kolmogorov equation, a five-dimensional equation in our anisotropic and strongly inhomogeneous flow, can describe the turbulent flow behaviour and related energy mechanisms. Such complex statistical observables are linked to a visual inspection of instantaneous turbulent structures detected by means of the Q-criterion. Part of these turbulent structures are trapped in the recirculation where they undergo a pseudo-cyclic process of disruption and reformation. The rest are convected downstream, grow and tend to larger streamwise scales in an inverse cascade. The classical picture of homogeneous isotropic turbulence in which energy is fed at large scales and transferred to dissipate at small scales does not simply apply to this flow where the energy dynamics strongly depends on position, orientation and length scale.

Recent experiments have revealed the existence of very long streamwise features, denoted as very-large-scale motions (VLSMs), in the thermally neutral atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) (Hutchins et al., Boundary-Layer Meteorol., vol. 145(2), 2012, pp. 273–306). The aim of our study is to elaborate the role of these large-scale anisotropic patterns in wind-energy harvesting with special emphasis on the organization of turbulent fields around wind turbines. To this end, we perform large-eddy simulation (LES) of a turbine row operating under neutral conditions. The ABL data are produced separately in a very long domain of $240\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$ is the ABL thickness, to ensure a realistic representation for very large scales of $O(10\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF})$. VLSMs are extracted from the LES database using a cutoff at streamwise wavelength $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{x}=5\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$, or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{x}=50D$ in terms of turbine diameter. Reynolds averaging of low-pass filtered fields shows that the interaction of VLSMs and turbines produce very-long-wavelength motions in the wake region, which contain approximately $20\,\%$ of the resolved Reynolds shear stress, and $30\,\%$ of the resolved streamwise kinetic energy in the shear layers. To further elucidate these statistics, we conduct a geometrical analysis using conditional averaging based on large-scale low- and high-velocity events. The conditional eddies provide evidence for very long (${\sim}10\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$) and wide (${\sim}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}$) streak–roller structures around the turbine row. Although all of these eddies share the same streak–roller topology, there are remarkable modifications in the morphology of the conditional eddies whose cores are located sideways to the turbines. In these cases, the turbine row pushes the whole low- or high-momentum streak aside, and prevails as a sharp boundary to the low–high-momentum streak pair. In this process, accompanying rollers remain relatively unaffected. This creates a two-way flux towards the turbine row. These observations provide some insights about the high lateral spreading observed in the large-scale Reynolds stress fields.

We numerically investigate the mechanism leading to the entrapment of spheres at the gas–liquid interface after impact. Upon impact onto a liquid pool, a hydrophobic sphere is seen to follow one of the three regimes identified in the experiment (Lee & Kim, Langmuir, vol. 24, 2008, pp. 142–145): sinking, bouncing or being entrapped at the interface. It is important to understand the role of wettability in this process of flow–structure interaction with dynamic wetting, and in particular, to what extent the wettability can determine whether the sphere is entrapped at the interface. For this purpose, a diffuse-interface immersed boundary method is adopted in the numerical simulations. We expand the parameter space considered previously, provide the phase diagrams and identify the key phenomena in the impact dynamics. Then, we propose the scaling models to interpret the critical conditions for the occurrence of sphere entrapment, accounting for the wettability of the sphere. The models are shown to provide a good correlation among the impact inertia of the drop, the surface tension, the wettability and the density ratio of the sphere to the liquid.

Yawing wind turbines has emerged as an appealing method for wake deflection. However, the associated flow properties, including the magnitude of the transverse velocity associated with yawed turbines, are not fully understood. In this paper, we view a yawed turbine as a lifting surface with an elliptic distribution of transverse lift. Prandtl’s lifting line theory provides predictions for the transverse velocity and magnitude of the shed counter-rotating vortex pair known to form downstream of the yawed turbine. The streamwise velocity deficit behind the turbine can then be obtained using classical momentum theory. This new model for the near-disk inviscid region of the flow is compared to numerical simulations and found to yield more accurate predictions of the initial transverse velocity and wake skewness angle than existing models. We use these predictions as initial conditions in a wake model of the downstream evolution of the turbulent wake flow and compare predicted wake deflection with measurements from wind tunnel experiments.
