Real networks often exhibit clustering, the tendency to form relatively small groups of nodes with high edge densities. This clustering property can cause large numbers of small and dense subgraphs to emerge in otherwise sparse networks. Subgraph counts are an important and commonly used source of information about the network structure and function. We study probability distributions of subgraph counts in a community affiliation graph. This is a random graph generated as an overlay of m partly overlapping independent Bernoulli random graphs (layers) $G_1,\dots,G_m$ with variable sizes and densities. The model is parameterised by a joint distribution of layer sizes and densities. When m grows linearly in the number of nodes n, the model generates sparse random graphs with a rich statistical structure, admitting a nonvanishing clustering coefficient and a power-law limiting degree distribution. In this paper we establish the normal and $\alpha$-stable approximations to the numbers of small cliques, cycles, and more general 2-connected subgraphs of a community affiliation graph.

This paper analyzes the training process of generative adversarial networks (GANs) via stochastic differential equations (SDEs). It first establishes SDE approximations for the training of GANs under stochastic gradient algorithms, with precise error bound analysis. It then describes the long-run behavior of GAN training via the invariant measures of its SDE approximations under proper conditions. This work builds a theoretical foundation for GAN training and provides analytical tools to study its evolution and stability.

A random variable Y is branching stable (B-stable) for a nonnegative integer-valued random variable J with E(J)>1 if Y*J∿cY for some scalar c, where Y*J is the sum of J independent copies of Y. We explore some aspects of this notion of stability and show that, for any Y0 with finite nonzero mean, if we define Yn+1=Yn*J/E(J) then the sequence Yn converges in law to a random variable Y∞ that is B-stable for J. Also Y∞ is the unique B-stable law with mean E(Y0). We also present results relating to random variables Y0 with zero means and infinite means. The notion of B-stability arose in a scheme for cataloguing a large network of computers.

We look at joint regular variation properties of MA(∞) processes of the form X = (Xk, k ∈ Z), where Xk = ∑j=0∞ψjZk-j and the sequence of random variables (Zi, i ∈ Z) are independent and identically distributed with regularly varying tails. We use the setup of MO-convergence and obtain hidden regular variation properties for X under summability conditions on the constant coefficients (ψj: j ≥ 0). Our approach emphasizes continuity properties of mappings and produces regular variation in sequence space.

Although the exact expressions for the extinction probabilities of the Interacting Branching Collision Processes (IBCP) were very recently given by Chen et al. [4], some of these expressions are very complicated; hence, useful information regarding asymptotic behaviour, for example, is harder to obtain. Also, these exact expressions take very different forms for different cases and thus seem lacking in homogeneity. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic behaviour of these extremely complicated and tangled expressions for extinction probabilities of IBCP follows an elegant and homogenous power law which takes a very simple form. In fact, we are able to show that if the extinction is not certain then the extinction probabilities {an} follow an harmonious and simple asymptotic law of an ∼ kn-αρcn as n → ∞, where k and α are two constants, ρc is the unique positive zero of the C(s), and C(s) is the generating function of the infinitesimal collision rates. Moreover, the interesting and important quantity α takes a very simple and uniform form which could be interpreted as the ‘spectrum’, ranging from -∞ to +∞, of the interaction between the two components of branching and collision of the IBCP.

We develop an integration by parts technique for point processes, with application to the computation of sensitivities via Monte Carlo simulations in stochastic models with jumps. The method is applied to density estimation with respect to the Lebesgue measure via a modified kernel estimator which is less sensitive to variations of the bandwidth parameter than standard kernel estimators. This applies to random variables whose densities are not analytically known and requires the knowledge of the point process jump times.

Results and methods discussed in two previous papers are extended to other cases. Comparison is made with recent work by Pickard (1980) and an earlier conjecture is disproved.

The properties of frequency distributions of inter-event intervals in the pooled output of several point processes where the points can be distinguished are investigated. In the case where the component processes are mutually independent, the p.d.f.'s of inter-event intervals in the pooled output are explicitly expressed, and the reciprocal relations on the p.d.f.'s and on the numbers of inter-event intervals are revealed.

The distribution of the number of alleles in samples from r chromosomes is studied. The stochastic model used includes gene conversion within chromosomes and mutation at loci on the chromosomes. A method is described for simulating the distribution of alleles and an algorithm given for computing lower bounds for the mean number of alleles.

A formula is derived for the expected number of samples from r chromosomes which contain the allele type of a locus chosen at random.

This study is motivated by problems of molecular sequence comparison for multiple marker arrays with correlated distributions. In this paper, the model assumes two (or more) kinds of markers, say Markers A and B, distributed along the DNA sequence. The two primary conditions of interest are (i) many of Marker B (say ≥ m) occur, and (ii) few of Marker B (say ≤ l) occur. We title these the conditional r-scan models, and inquire on the extent to which Marker A clusters or is over-dispersed in regions satisfying condition (i) or (ii). Limiting distributions for the extremal r-scan statistics from the A array satisfying conditions (i) and (ii) are derived by extending the Chen-Stein Poisson approximation method.

The said paper deals with the following situation: an intersection is controlled by a traffic light with a fixed cycle time, T; the possibility of other delays, e.g., due to turning vehicles, is ignored; arrivals at the light form a compound Poisson process; if vehicles arrive to find the light green and the queue empty they are not delayed, while in the contrary case they depart when they reach the head of the queue, providing the light is green, each vehicle taking a constant time to move off. The jigsaw percolation process on graphs was introduced by Brummitt et al. (2015) as a model of collaborative solutions of puzzles in social networks. Percolation in this process may be viewed as the joint connectedness of two graphs on a common vertex set. Our aim is to extend a result of Bollobás et al. (2017) concerning this process to hypergraphs for a variety of possible definitions of connectedness. In particular, we determine the asymptotic order of the critical threshold probability for percolation when both hypergraphs are chosen binomially at random.

We consider the drawing with and without replacement models from numerical populations. For order statistics based on the above drawing schemes, we provide sharp upper bounds for their variances, expressed in the single observation variance units. We also characterize the populations for which the bounds are attained.

De Bruijn's identity relates two important concepts in information theory: Fisher information and differential entropy. Unlike the common practice in the literature, in this paper we consider general additive non-Gaussian noise channels where more realistically, the input signal and additive noise are not independently distributed. It is shown that, for general dependent signal and noise, the first derivative of the differential entropy is directly related to the conditional mean estimate of the input. Then, by using Gaussian and Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern copulas, special versions of the result are given in the respective case of additive normally distributed noise. The previous result on independent Gaussian noise channels is included as a special case. Illustrative examples are also provided.

This paper is devoted to studying the long-term behaviour of a continuous-time Markov chain that can be interpreted as a pair of linear birth processes which evolve with a competitive interaction; as a special case, they include the famous Lotka–Volterra interaction. Another example of our process is related to urn models with ball removal. We show that, with probability one, the process eventually escapes to infinity by sticking to the boundary in a rather unusual way.

We give an exponential tail approximation for the extinction time of a subcritical multitype branching process arising from the SIR epidemic model on a random graph with given degrees, where the type corresponds to the vertex degree. As a corollary we obtain a Gumbel limit law for the extinction time, when beginning with a large population. Our contribution is to allow countably many types (this corresponds to unbounded degrees in the random graph epidemic model, as the number of vertices tends to∞). We only require a second moment for the offspring-type distribution featuring in our model.

We study a class of growing systems of random walks on regular trees, known as frog models with geometric lifetime in the literature. With the help of results from renewal theory, we derive new bounds for their critical parameters. Our approach also improves the existing bounds for the critical parameter of a percolation model on trees known as cone percolation.

We examine a Markov manpower system in continuous time where demotion rates are 0 and promotion rates are time-dependent. The transient and limiting behaviours of the model are discussed, and illustrated with examples.
