A simulation study was conducted to determine the relative response to selection of a one-dimensional spatial analysis of field experiments (SAFE) specifically adapted for early generation trials. The primary purpose of the analysis in these trials is to obtain accurate estimates of genotypic effects of the unreplicated test lines by adjusting for local variation, using either the yields of all neighbouring plots or the yields of neighbouring plots of (replicated) check varieties. The response to selection of the SAFE analysis, relative to the use of unadjusted yields of test line plots, was consistently greater than the relative response to selection of check-plot-only analyses. The relative response to selection of SAFE increased as the percentage of trend variance increased.

A field experiment was carried out at the Wye College Farm during 1988 and 1989. The aim was to study the effects of three rates and timings of nitrogen fertilizer application on the grain protein content of spring wheat cv. Axona. Results demonstrated that timing of fertilizer application was more important than the rate of nitrogen used. Grain protein development and final grain protein contents are discussed in relation to the seasonal variations experienced during the 1988 and 1989 growing seasons in South East England. Due to the early February sowing in 1989, grain protein content was not affected by the summer drought. Thus, the advantage of early sowing of spring wheat to reduce the detrimental effect of early summer drought on the grain protein content is emphasised.

Winter barley cv. Igri, winter wheat cv. Avalon and spring wild oats (Avena fatua) were studied in monocultures in pots and in the field. The field experiments were located near Bristol and Bury St Edmunds in 1988/89. Pot sowings were monthly, whereas there was a single sowing date for each of the two field locations. Base temperatures for emergence in pots were 2·2, 1·3 and 2·3 °C for barley, wheat and A. fatua respectively. Barley was consistently the fastest to emerge. Leaf number was strongly correlated with photothermal time from emergence, with barley producing leaves at the greatest rate. Base temperatures for leaf appearance were −6, −5 and −3 °C for barley, wheat and A. fatua respectively. The field studies confirmed the ranking of the species based on the pot experiments. Both a model based on photothermal time and one based on rate of change of daylength at emergence gave good descriptions of the data. It is argued that correlations of rates of development with individual environmental variables are not sufficient to deduce the underlying mechanisms.

Single chromosome substitution lines of hexaploid wheat were developed using a variety resistant to difenzoquat, Chinese Spring, as donor and a susceptible variety, Sicco, as recipient, and were used to identify chromosomes carrying genes which modify the responses of these varieties. It was found that chromosomes 3B and 5D from Chinese Spring might act to reduce the amount of damage caused by the herbicide in the presence of the allele for susceptibility at the Dfql locus. The intermediate response to the herbicide, which is shown by some commerical varieties, was also investigated using a backcross reciprocal monosomic analysis. In these varieties, the allele at the Dfql locus determining the reaction to the herbicide was shown to be similar to that of the susceptible variety Sicco. It is, therefore, probable that the responses of intermediate varieties are due to the effects of modifier genes increasing resistance.

The number of leaves formed on the main shoot of a wheat plant is an important developmental feature, and a method of predicting this is essential for computer simulation of development.

A model function was used to estimate vernalization from simulated sowing dates throughout a season. When expressed in terms of thermal time, it was estimated that a plant might be fully vernalized soon after seedling emergence or take up to about 1000 °Cd, depending on sowing date. When the simulated progress of vernalization was related to main shoot development (primordium initiation and leaf emergence) it was found that there were substantial differences between sowings in the rate of vernalization at comparable stages of apex development.

A number of field experiments done in Britain from 1980 to 1984 with prominent commercial varieties, sown at various times from September to March, were analysed in terms of the thermal time to full vernalization and the photoperiod at the time of full vernalization, with vernalization simulated by the model function. In both winter and spring varieties, both of these variables significantly affected the number of main shoot leaves. Multiple linear regression using these two variables accounted for between 70 and 90% of the variance in leaf number, depending on variety.

An experiment, carried out over a 5-year period (1984–88) on medium–heavy textured soil at Athy (Ireland), tested the effect of five sowing dates (early September–early December) and four seed rates (c. 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg/ha) on the grain yield and protein content of winter barley (cv. Panda).

September-sown plots gave the greatest yields in all years. Plots sown in mid-October and later gave significantly reduced yields. Yield reductions over the 5-year period averaged 15, 24 and 34% for the mid-October, November and December sowing dates, respectively. Significant differences in yield between the smaller and larger seed rates were obtained, with the latter giving the greatest yields at all sowing dates from late September to December. Increasing the seed rate, however, did not compensate for the yield reduction due to delayed sowing. In the early September-sown plots, the higher seed rates gave reduced yields in four of the five years (1984–87) with the opposite result in 1988. In 1988 the early September-sown plots gave greater yields than the late September-sown plots.

Regression analysis showed a strong relationship between yield and log(ears/m2) in four of the five years (1984–87) but the relationship was poor in 1988 primarily due to the inexplicably low ear population of the early-sown plots. The inclusion of 1000-grain weight in the model gave a better fit and accounted for a high proportion (62–80%) of the yield variation.

The late September sowing date and the higher seed rates gave slightly lower protein levels in four of the five years. There was an inverse relationship between grain yield and protein for the same four years (1984–87).

A trial using a split-plot with blocks design was carried out at the INTA Balcarce Experimental Station, Argentina on a typic argiudol soil to evaluate N nutrition in wheat after different preceding crops and using two rates of N fertilization (0 and 90 kg N/ha).

Wheat (Triticum aestivum), soyabean (Glycine max), sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and maize (Zea mays) were grown in different combinations for two successive years (1984/85 and 1985/86).

No water stress was detected during either growing season. Nitrogen availability was altered by the previous crops grown, but the effect lasted only for one season. Wheat following maize yielded least with no N and responded most to N fertilization. The highest yields of wheat without N and the lowest response by wheat to N fertilization were found after crops of soyabean and sunflower.

Wheat after a fertilized wheat crop did not respond to N fertilization because of a serious attack of take-all (Gaeumannomyces graminis tritici).

The nitrate concentration in wheat stem bases was found to be a good estimator of the availability of soil N.

Six experiments were carried out over 2 years (1985 and 1986) in commercial spring barley crops on calcareous soils in Hampshire. Herbicides increased grain yield by 0·05–1·21 t/ha, and fungicides by 0·01–0·68 t/ha. Herbicide use affected each of the yield components ears/plant, grains/ear, 1000-grain weight and harvest index in one or more cases but the effects were not consistent between experiments or consistently related to yield increases. Fungicide use had little effect on yield components other than 1000-grain weight, which was significantly increased in all experiments. There were no significant herbicide × fungicide interactions. Large differences in yield were recorded between field edge (headland) and midfield plots, with headland plots outyielding the midfield in two of the three experiments where this effect was considered.

The effects of fungicide use were accounted for by associated increases in the green lamina area of the flag leaf and second leaf at the late milk stage of grain development. This is consistent with previous work. Differences in yield response to herbicide between sites were linearly related both to weed numbers early in the season and to weed biomass at harvest. Weeds did not always directly replace crop biomass; in some experiments the combined dry matter production was greater when herbicide was not used. However, the results indicate that, where a diverse weed flora composed of species of moderate to low competitive ability is present, simple weed counts may provide a useful indication of potential yield loss.

It is concluded that headland areas can often be as productive as the rest of the field, but a greater understanding of the factors involved is needed if this potential is to be realized.

Fourteen experiments which studied effects of date of planting in July, date of harvesting and seed rate on seed tuber yields (10–51 mm) of several potato varieties were carried out in four seasons in East Anglia. Seed tuber yields of c. 30 t/ha in Estima, Wilja and Maris Piper and 20 t/ha in Record were produced from the early planting and in all varieties c. 20 t/ha were produced from planting in late July. For maximum seed yield in all varieties, seed rates of 1·5–2 t/ha were sufficient for most harvests from both dates of planting but for the earliest harvest of the late-July planting, seed rates of only 1–1·5 t/ha were required. The value of seed crops was assessed as the number of ware hectares that could be replanted from the seed yield of one hectare graded 10–51 mm. In all varieties, the number of seed-size tubers and replantable hectares increased with increasing seed rate over most of the range, but numbers were close to the maximum at the early harvests. With delay in harvesting, the number of seed tubers and replantable hectares decreased in many experiments, especially from low seed rates, as more tubers exceeded the upper seed size limit. Maximum numbers of replantable hectares of 15, 15, 20 and 25 were found in Record, Estima, Wilja and Maris Piper, respectively.

The monetary value of seed crops of Record and Maris Piper was calculated using (i) a fixed price per tonne of seed and (ii) cost of seed per replantable ware hectare. Sale values from the latter were substantially higher than from the former at early harvests in Record and at all harvests in Maris Piper. In Record, differences in sale value between the two pricing methods decreased with delay in harvesting as yields increased while number of replantable hectares varied little. The results showed that high multiplication rates and monetary returns can be obtained from short-season seed potato crops which may follow crops harvested earlier in the same season. The implications for potato production in the UK are discussed.

While the relative advantage of hybrids over open-pollinated varieties has long been established for temperate sorghums in developed countries, similar information for semi-tropical sorghums used in Africa and India is relatively scant, especially under conditions of drought stress. This study compared 23 hybrids with 21 open-pollinated varieties, all developed in India and/or Southern Africa. Materials were field-tested under conditions of stored soil moisture at two levels of drought stress (dryland or one supplemental irrigation) at Bet Dagan, Israel in 1989.

Irrespective of the water regime, grain yield and harvest index increased and leaf area index decreased with a shorter growth duration of the genotypes. Hybrids were earlier, had a larger leaf area index, more than double the harvest index and produced more grain compared with varieties. In spite of their longer growth duration, varieties were less water-stressed than hybrids, as judged by their midday leaf water potential, relative water content and the extent of leaf rolling. The relatively poor plant water status of the hybrids could be partly ascribed to their larger leaf area index. Hybrids produced more biomass per day than varieties under low stress while varieties produced more biomass per day than hybrids under high stress. Thus, in terms of plant water status and mean daily biomass production, varieties were more drought resistant than hybrids. However, the physiological superiority of the varieties under drought stress did not result in a higher grain yield because of their inherent relatively poor harvest index, typical of the tall and late African sorghums. The superior physiological resistance to drought stress of these varieties could be translated into a yield advantage under drought stress if their potential harvest index is improved.

Leaf proportions (LP) were determined in spring barley straws harvested at Cambridge in 1984 and 1985. Linear regression equations showed that a greater number of days to flowering increased LP whilst greater plant height decreased LP in spring barley straws. Plant height accounted for more than 70% of the variance in LP. By contrast, grain yield and stem diameter accounted for only a small percentage of the variance in LP. Straws from two-rowed winter barleys had slightly higher LP than six-rowed winter barleys but LP in winter and spring barleys were similar.

Leaf blade and leaf sheath fractions of the straws had lower acid detergent fibre and lignin contents and were more digestible than the stem fractions. Linear regression equations of straw digestibility in spring barleys on LP, grain yields, days to flowering and plant heights showed that LP accounted for a higher percentage of the variance in digestibility in 1984 than the other characteristics. In 1985, when harvesting conditions were unusually wet, grain yield accounted for the highest percentage of the variance in straw digestibility.

There were no differences in chemical composition and straw digestibility between two-rowed and six-rowed barleys, but winter barleys had higher straw digestibility than spring barleys. Date of sowing did not influence straw quality in two-rowed winter barleys.

The ranking of two-rowed spring barleys for LP, chemical composition and digestibility suggested that varieties with consistently better straw quality could be identified.

Patterns of assimilate distribution in single plants of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) cv. Mikado, following a reduction in sink capacity at flowering were investigated in two field experiments during the 1985/86 and 1986/87 growing seasons at Cockle Park Experimental Station, Northumberland. Plants demonstrated considerable compensatory growth following the removal of flowers from the terminal raceme and primary branches.

Flower removal from lower branches did not significantly reduce total seed weight. Plants with a pod-bearing terminal raceme and one, two or three productive higher-order branches yielded a similar amount of seed. When seed production was confined to the terminal raceme and first four primary branches, seed yield per plant was greatly increased. Removal of flowers from the terminal raceme and uppermost branches of plants increased the number and productivity of lower-order branches but not enough to offset the overall loss in seed yield potential per plant. Indeed, when flowers were removed from higher-order racemes, the reduction in total seed weight per plant, was directly related to the degree of flower removal. The additional seed yield obtained from individual branches of modified plants in both experiments arose largely through an increase in fertile pod number and seed number per pod. Flower removal treatments did not greatly influence mean seed weight.

The results clearly demonstrated that the loss of flowers from lower-order branches could be tolerated and may even be beneficial. Conversely, the removal of flowers from higher-order branches resulted in significant yield reductions. The production of lower branches should be restricted, therefore, in order to increase the superiority of the terminal raceme and uppermost branches and to increase the overall production efficiency of the crop canopy.

Two varieties of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), Tribune and RvP, were cut in each of 2 years, ensiled and individually fed, ad libitum, to dairy cows. In one year, two rates of supplementary concentrate feeding were compared and, in the other year, two types of concentrate and a silage-only diet. Tribune silage was more digestible, in vitro, and was lower in neutral detergent fibre and fibrosity index than RvP silage. There was no difference between the varieties, however, in the cows’ intake of silage. On the silage-only diet, the cows fed Tribune produced a higher yield of milk solids than did those fed RvP; on the other diets, there was no significant difference between varieties in the yield or composition of milk.

The same two varieties were compared when grazed by herds of dairy cows in spring, summer and autumn of the first harvest year on six farms and in the second harvest year on four of the farms. Tribune persisted much better than RvP, in numbers of plants and tillers/m2 and in ground cover, and the herbage was more digestible than that of RvP. Milk yield/cow was c. 0·6 kg per day higher when grazing Tribune than when grazing RvP.

Residual nitrogen from white clover/ryegrass swards and ryegrass monocultures was quantified in terms of the barley yield obtained after ploughing the swards. Clover/ryegrass swards based on small and medium-leaved cultivars of white clover and ryegrass monocultures were grazed continuously by sheep for 3 years (1984–87) at the Welsh Plant Breeding Station, Aberystwyth, ploughed in the following spring (1988) and then sown with the spring barley cultivar Doublet. Yield of barley obtained after clover/ryegrass mixtures was 50% greater than barley harvested after ryegrass monocultures. Barley yield was 1·6 t/ha more following the white clover cultivars Gwenda and SI84 with ryegrass than following ryegrass monocultures.

Pastures of Digitaria decumbens (pangola grass) previously oversown with Lotononis bainesii at Mount Cotton, south-east Queensland, Australia, were grazed by sheep for 3 years (1985–87), using a factorial combination of seasonal variations in stocking rate.

Lotononis behaved as a short-lived plant with a mean half-life of 4·2 months (range 1·6–10·3); rate of mortality was positively related to initial seedling density. The proportion of lotononis remained very low for the first 2 years of the experiment, when conditions were unsuitable for large-scale seedling regeneration, which was also limited by the hardness of the seed reserves. Subsequently, lotononis regenerated well in treatments which combined the following features: (i) light grazing (5 sheep/ha) during the main flowering period of spring-early summer, (ii) heavy short-duration grazing in mid-summer to create a ‘gap’ and (iii) medium or heavy (18 or 27 sheep/ha) grazing during late summer-autumn to reduce competition from pangola grass.

The ecological niche of lotononis and the possible use of complementary pastures are discussed.

Different geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L. Herit) clones differed in susceptibility to root rot and wilt caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn. Reactions were consistent when assessed either by standardized laboratory tests or by pot experiments using 60-day-old well-rooted plants. Plants of an Algerian-type clone (Kd) had a lower survival rate and higher root rot index values than those of a Reunion type (Lo) and an Egyptian type (Eg). Field studies conducted in naturally-infected plots in southern India from 1987 to 1990 showed that summer planting resulted in higher plant losses of all clones than winter planting. As in the laboratory and pot experiments, the Lo and Eg clones sustained less plant loss and produced higher herbage and oil yields than the Kd clones in both field experiments.

In an intermediate deepwater situation (15–50 cm) at Cuttack, India, three improved high-yielding rice varieties, Utkalprabha (semi-tall), CR 292–8051 (intermediate tall) and Gayatri (semi-dwarf) were sown on 20 May, 30 May and 10 June in 1988 and 1989 with an application of either 0, 20 or 40 kg N/ha at sowing. Tall varieties performed better than the dwarf type but grain yield decreased with delay in sowing. The early-sown crops (20–30 May) germinated with pre-monsoon rains and were established well before water accumulated in the field from mid-June onwards. The late-sown crops (10 June), despite good initial germination, could not withstand immediate waterlogging. The tall variety, Utkalprabha, elongated faster with rising water level and escaped complete submergence; whereas the semi-dwarf Gayatri failed to withstand such extreme excess water stress. Application of N fertilizer up to 40 kg/ha proved beneficial to the crops sown by the end of May. However, with crops sown on 10 June, the application of N could not compensate for the loss in yield due to an inadequate initial crop stand. Therefore, early sowing of tall varieties by the end of May along with a basal application of N fertilizer is recommended for higher productivity of rice under excess water conditions.

Sixteen experiments over six seasons (1981–87) compared the growth and yield of up to 16 seed-tuber weights, ranging from 1–5 to 110–120 g, in one second-early and four maincrop varieties. Four of the experiments (1986–87) examined effects in seed tubers from seed crops planted in July; the remaining experiments used seed from crops planted at the normal time, April–May. Effects were similar for seed from the different planting dates. Plants from seed < 5 g (and occasionally up to 15 g) emerged slightly later and produced a smaller crop canopy that those from larger seed. The later emergence from the smallest seed was a consequence of a slower rate of sprout elongation. There were no effects of seed weight above 15 g on stem emergence or growth of the canopy. In 1982, a severe frost completely defoliated all plants in four experiments but within 2 weeks complete plant emergence was re-achieved from all seed weights except the smallest (1–5 g). The results suggest few differences between seed weights > 5 or 10 g in emergence from similar depths of planting or in recovery from frost damage.

Tuber yields were little affected by seed weight > 5 or 10 g, even at constant within-row spacings. Consequently, seed rates from 0·59 to 5·4 t/ha produced similar yields and the results suggest considerable economic benefits and potential for using seed tubers of much smaller weight than may be sold under current legislation. The use of small seed tubers from late-planted crops may result in further economies in production costs and reduction in disease in seed tubers.

Sprout emergence in the potato variety Estima was investigated in controlled environment and field experiments. The effects of temperature, physiological age, planting date and soil moisture were examined in controlled environments and the results were compared with the emergence of physiologically young and old seed in field experiments with different soil types, planting dates and planting depths.

Elongation of sprouts could be described by a lag period of slow growth followed by a period of rapid linear growth. The lag period was shorter with increase in temperature up to 20 °C and sprout length at planting up to c. 10 mm. The lag period was slightly reduced by warming seed at 10 °C before planting, compared with planting seed directly from cold storage. The rate of linear growth increased with temperature up to 20 °C but was similar for young and old seed at different planting dates. The rate of growth was lower in dry soil than in soil near to field capacity, particularly at high temperatures.

The observed date of emergence in the field was usually later than predicted, particularly with shallow planting, but prediction was improved by accounting for soil moisture. The use of this model should give more accurate estimation of emergence for farm operations and crop growth models than existing equations.
