Three techniques, lamb-suckling and test-weighing, hand- or machine-milking following administration of oxytocin, and measurements of body-water turnover, used for the estimation of milk yield in suckled sheep are discussed in relation to sources of error and comparability of estimates.

Results are presented from an experiment in which the lamb-suckling and the oxytocin techniques were compared. The mean daily milk production of Scottish Blackface and East Friesland × Scottish Blackface ewes suckling single and twin lambs was measured by both methods at weekly intervals for 6 weeks. All ewes were well nourished to ensure full expression of milking capacity. Additional information from a similar experiment on Merino ewes is also presented.

The oxytocin method gave higher estimates of mean daily milk yield in the first week of lactation, especially in the groups of ewes rearing single lambs and in the Blackface breed. By the second week in most groups and the third week in all groups there were no significant differences between estimates made by the two methods and the relative values of the estimates were not affected by level of milk production, number of lambs suckled or genotype of ewe and lamb.

A number of experiments to test the effects of N and P fertilizers and a few testing K fertilizer were carried out mainly with Arran Banner and Up-to-Date potatoes in the major potato-growing area of Cyprus (Kokkinoohoria). The optimum nitrogen rate, all applied at planting in January-February, was 60–120 kg N/ha with yields reaching 50 t/ha. Phosphorus increased yields in only 4 out of 21 trials. In two of these cases the soil contained 8 mg bicarbonate-extractable P/kg soil or less. In the other two cases the soil contained 34 and 56 mg P/kg but irrigation was erratic. In only one experiment where soil potassium was depleted to 222 mg exchangeable K/kg through continuous cropping with irrigated crops, without potassium fertilizer, was a clear response to K fertilizer obtained; this, however, is the first response to K fertilizer by any crop reported in a plain area of Cyprus.

Concentration of NO2·N in the petiole of the first mature leaf from the top sampled at 80 days from planting under the 120 kg N/ha rate, beyond which seldom were yields increased, was about 0·5%. In the only experiment where a response to K was obtained, concentration of K in entire leaves sampled as above was about 2·5%.

It is argued that since growers in this area have used heavy dressings of P and K over recent years, they will seldom get any benefit from applying more than a maintenance dose of 70 kg P and 150 kg K/ha to the potato crop. It is suggested that since in semiarid regions leaching is limited, soil tests of NO3 content can aid farmers in choosing the optimum amount of N fertilizer for each crop.

Equations to predict the leached fractions of initially surface-applied salts either with irrigation water or broadcast on the soil surface have been derived from the solution of the dispersion-convection equation. Predictions obtained from these equations compare well with observed leaching data of chlorides and nitrates. It is shown that the loss of fertilizers when applied with irrigation water is reduced compared with that of applying it by broadcasting. The use of equations for predicting soil salinization and leaching of surface-concentrated salts is also indicated.

The effects of farmyard manure (FYM) and P and K fertilizers on soil properties were studied at the end of a 3-year (1972–5) field experiment at New Delhi, India. Each year a crop of rice and wheat was grown. FYM was applied at 0 or 15 t/ha, phosphorus at 0, 30 and 60 kg P2O5/ha and potassium at 0 or 60 kg K2O/ha. Treatments included application of manure and fertilizer to rice or wheat alone or to both the crops. FYM application increased organic C, total N and available K and P in the soil, the effects being greater when both rice and wheat received FYM. Application of FYM slightly decreased the soil pH. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizer increased available P and K in the soil, respectively.

Milk yield of 2-year-old Scottish Blackface and of East Friesland × Scottish Blackface ewes rearing single or twin lambs was estimated by the oxytocin method on 1 day each week up to the 14th week of lactation. Both groups of ewes had been reared from birth under good nutritional conditions. They were housed in individual pens from mid-pregnancy and offered a liberal ration of a pelleted concentrate food until parturition. Similar food was offered ad libitum during lactation.

The cross-bred ewes rearing singles or twins produced significantly more milk in the first 12 weeks (181 and 258 kg respectively) than did pure Blackface ewes in the same period (144 and 208 kg respectively). The pattern of lactation differed between breeds. Cross-bred ewes attained higher maximum yields between the second and sixth weeks (2·37 and 3·32 kg/day, respectively, for single- and twin-suckled ewes) than did the Blackface ewes (1·97 and 2·88 kg/day). The yield from the cross-breds was sustained at a higher level throughout lactation. In the third 4-week period cross-bred ewes rearing single and twin lambs produced 116 and 92%, respectively, of their yield in the first 4 weeks whilst Blackface ewes produced 87 and 65%, respectively.

In the sixth week of lactation the milk produced by the two breed groups was similar in quality (mean value of solids-not-fat 11·04% and fat 5·48%) but by the 11th week the fat percentage of milk produced by Blackface ewes had increased significantly to 7·34% whereas that of the cross-breds had remained almost unchanged.

Single-suckled ewes gained weight throughout lactation but twin-suckled ewes remained relatively constant. Lambs reared as singles by cross-bred or Blackface ewes reached a mean live weight of 36·2 and 35·0 kg at 102 days of age, respectively, compared with 33·6 and 30·1 kg for twin lambs. Food intake of all ewes increased until the fifth or sixth week of lactation.

Experiments were carried out on oil-seed rape, variety Zollerngold, to determine the effects on flower and pod development when (1) the supply of carbon assimilates was reduced by shading or leaf removal at different stages of development or (2) the supply of assimilates to the more apically positioned flowers or pods on the terminal raceme was increased by removing 15 of the most basal flowers or pods.

A decrease in the production of carbon assimilates led to fewer flowers and pods developing to maturity and when the stress continued over most of the period of pod development the pods were smaller and had fewer seeds which were also lighter in weight.

Removal of the 15 basal flowers or pods led to more of the apically positioned flowers developing into mature pods and the other pods becoming heavier with bigger husks, heavier seeds and sometimes a greater number of seeds.

The results of a shading experiment in a controlled environment cabinet suggest that stresses in the supply of carbon assimilates around the time of anthesis are particularly harmful since in addition to reducing the number of pods which develop they appear to restrict the capacity for compensatory growth in the pods that remain when the supply returns to normal.

An investigation was carried out into the potential of tylosin and terramycin fermentation wastes as fertilizers for tomatoes. Each waste was added at concentrations equivalent to 1 tN/ha to John Innes base compost. Each waste provided the sole source of nitrogen for the crop. Controls were set up with inorganic nitrogen applied at 1 tN/ha and 0·2 tN/ha, the quantity of nitrogen normally found in John Innes potting compost. Comparisons were also made between wet and dry terramycin waste. Each treatment was added to normal John Innes base compost and John Innes base minus one part peat, to determine the potential of antibiotic fermentation waste as a peat substitute. The size, weight and antibiotic content of the tomatoes produced were determined.

The use of antibiotic fermentation wastes delayed the onset of tomato production due to the slow release of nitrogen. Final yields were not significantly different from the control treatments except in the tylosin treatment which produced the highest yield, both in terms of weight and numbers, of all the treatments. The reduction in the amount of peat in the base compost only appeared to affect the control treatments, where a delay in the onset of tomato production was seen in the control low in peat. No antibiotic was detected in any of the tomatoes.

During 3 years the distribution of pests on ten crops of winter rape and two of spring rape, and the damage they caused, has been determined.

During immigration the adults of all pests infested crop edges more than crop centres, particularly on large crops, irrespective of the presence of wind breaks. The proportion of M. aeneus and G. assimilis at the crop edge gradually diminished as they moved further into the crop, and their larvae and pods with C. assimilis emergence holes were more evenly distributed over the crops than the adults. Damage by M. aeneus was not the only cause of podless stalks. The larvae of D. brassicae were largely confined to the edges of crops; split pods were largely but not solely confined to the edges.

In winter rape crops correlations were found between the percentage of podless stalks per plant and the number of M. aeneus present, and the percentage of pods infested with C. assimilis larvae and the adult C. assimilis population. In two fields infested with D. brassicae the diminution in the proportion of split pods from crop edge to crop centre was positively correlated with diminution in the number of adult D. brassicae.

Three experiments carried out in 3 years (1973–5) which examined the effects of length of sprouting period and temperature of sprouting on growth and yield of three early potato varieties are described. In Home Guard in 1973 at the earliest harvests, tuber yields increased with increase in length and temperature of sprouting period. At later harvests tuber yields decreased with increase in sprouting period especially at the higher temperature (13 rather than 8 °C) and increasing the temperature of sprouting reduced tuber yield. In 1974 length of sprouting period had few effects on yield at any harvest and increasing the temperature increased yields only at the first harvest. In Vanessa cold storage at 3 °C prior to entry to sprouting temperatures induced an earlier onset of sprout growth than continuous exposure to temperatures conducive to sprout growth. Long sprouting periods produced less sprout growth and at the earliest harvest lower tuber yields than all except the shortest period. Judged from the onset of sprout growth increases in length and temperature of sprouting generally increased tuber yields especially at early harvests. In Pentland Javelin sprout growth was very slow and tuber yields at early harvests decreased at both sprouting temperatures if sprouting began after mid-November. At later harvests effects of both factors were small.

The implications of differences in the effects of sprouting periods according to variety and, in Home Guard, season, are discussed in relation to the provision of the most desirable sprouting environment and to variety testing. The similarity in the effects of lengthening the sprouting period and of increasing the temperature of sprouting suggest that temperature is the major causal factor in sprout growth and its effect on field growth. Sprouting periods may therefore be measured most accurately by accumulated day degrees > 0 °C and a close relationship between such a scale and tuber yields is demonstrated. The relevance of such scales for advice to growers is discussed.

Tuber growth rates for Vanessa and to a lesser extent Home Guard in 1974 were extremely high, in excess of 10 t/ha/week for Vanessa. These high rates were associated with high levels of radiation received by coastal sites in May and June and are discussed in relation to the canopy structure of the varieties.

Data were collected from 218 commercial crops of vining peas (Pisum sativumcv. Dark Skinned Perfection) to test the hypothesis that variability between commercial crops in the yield of vining peas is associated with variation in the number of pods per plant. Yield varied widely between crops; the coefficient of variation of crop yield adjusted to tenderometer reading 105 was 25%. Only a small part of this variation could be accounted for by the correlation between yield and the estimated number of pods per plant (r = 0·067, 216 D.F.), and significance levels were not substantially improved by allowing for the effects of sowing date and plant density, or by using data on number of pods at each separate node in place of the overall totals per plant. Consequently the hypothesis stated above is not supported and it is suggested that variation in the weight of peas per pod was the main cause of variation in yield between crops.

A number of significant relationships were noted in the correlation analyses; (1) the mean number of pods per node at adjacent nodes tended to be positively correlated; (2) the number of pods per node at the first podding node tended to be positively correlated with plant density; (3) the numbers at the upper nodes tended to be negatively correlated with sowing date and with harvest date.

In field experiments made over 3 years Pentland Crown and Majestic gave, in general, higher total and dry matter yields from plots given no supplementary water and protected from rainfall throughout growth than King Edward or Maris Piper. However, on plots kept at or near to field capacity all varieties gave similar yields. Pentland Crown and Majestic were deeper rooting than the other two varieties at the time of tuber formation (when the production of new roots ceased) but the differences in rooting depth (ca. 100 mm) between the varieties were small. Except for the top 150 mm of soil, differences in water extraction between the varieties throughout the profile were also small. Neither these differences in water extraction nor the differences in rooting depth could be related consistently to the differences in varietal yield response between ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ plots.

An experiment was carried out to study the composition of the mixture of rumen short-chain fatty acids and the clearance rate of the rumen liquid phase in sheep given diets of dried grass, high-nitrogen hay, low-nitrogen hay and barley straw. Differences between diets in clearance rate were not significant (P > 0·05) and differences between diets in the composition of the mixture of rumen acids were small. There were substantial variations in clearance rate between individual sheep but this was not associated with variations in the pattern of fermentation and the correlation between the proportion of propionic acid and the clearance rate in the rumen was low (r = –0·23).

In a second experiment sheep receiving a moderate-quality hay were given intravenous injections of atropine sulphate which resulted in significant increases in rumen volume (P < 0·01) and significant reductions in ruminal clearance rate (P < 0·05). These were accompanied by significant increases in the numbers of protozoa (P < 0·05) and bacteria (P < 0·05) in the rumen but the composition of the mixture of rumen short-chain fatty acids was unchanged.

It is concluded that there is little possibility through alteration of ruminal clearance rate, for manipulation of rumen fermentation pattern in sheep receiving diets of moderate- or poor-quality forages.

Eleven single-rearing and 14 twin-rearing Greyface (Border-Leicester × Scottish Blackface) ewes which had previously been individually fed indoors on three nutritional treatments (treatment 1, adequately nourished; treatment 2, moderately undernourished; treatment 3, severely undernourished) during the final 6 weeks of pregnancy, were subsequently grazed with eight non-lactating Greyface ewes on a ryegrass–white clover pasture for the first 14 weeks of lactation.

Herbage organic matter (OM) intakes and milk yields of ewes were measured weekly and the herbage OM intakes of lambs from week 7 of lactation.

Mean daily OM intakes were 36·6 (± 1·09), 38·9 (± 0·99) and 26·4 (± 0·93) g OM/kg body-weight for single- and twin-rearing, and non-lactating ewes respectively. Prepartum nutrition had no effect on intake. Maximum intakes were achieved in week 5 for twin-rearing ewes (53 g OM/kg) and week 4 for single and non-lactating ewes (54 and 38 g OM/kg respectively).

Mean daily weight gains over the period for single-, twin-rearing and non-lactating ewes were 89 (±22·2), 73 (±16·1) and 182 (±22·5)g respectively. There were no differences due to prepartum treatment.

There were significant differences (P < 0·05) in milk production between singleand twin-rearing ewes in the first 5 weeks of lactation. Twin-rearing ewes of prepartum treatment 1 produced consistently more milk in weeks 2, 3 and 4 of lactation, whereas ewes from treatment 3 tended to produce more milk than ewes from the other treatment groups thereafter.

Milk intakes of single lambs were always significantly greater than individual twin lambs, and single lambs ate significantly less grass during the herbage OM intake measurement period from week 7; their growth rates up to week 7 were also significantly greater.

No differences in the intake or growth rate of lambs could be attributed to the prepartum nutritional treatment of their dams.

Ewe maintenance requirements during lactation were estimated to be 242 (± 35·1) kJ ME/kg body weight/day; the efficiency with which ME was used for milk production to be 59%; and the efficiency with which ME was used for body-weight gain, 53%.

Lamb maintenance requirements were estimated to be 427 (± 143) kJ ME/kg W in weeks 1 and 2 of lactation and 287 (± 44·2) kJ/kg from week 7. Efficiency of utilization of energy for body-weight gain in each period was estimated to be 71 and 80% respectively.

A statistical analysis is presented of published laboratory data on 4407 soil horizon samples collected by the Soil Survey of England and Wales during 1950–73, to typify soil taxa. Seventy-five percent of the profiles have fine textured parent materials in both calcareous and non-calcareous categories. Moderate to large increases in clay content down the profile, which could indicate argillio horizons, are found in 56% of the profiles but the influence of lithological discontinuities has not been eliminated. Argillic horizons are commonest on calcareous or low grade metamorphic rocks and non-calcareous clayey or silty sediments. Less than half the average frequency of clay increase between middle and bottom horizons is shown in the igneous and high grade metamorphic lithological type.

pH gradient down the profile is not clearly related to altitude. The pH change (0·7) between top and bottom horizons in profiles from calcareous and igneous parent materials is twice as great as in other non-calcareous profiles. There is usually less clay in the top horizons than in others; the top horizon contains more than 35% clay about half as frequently as the lower horizons. Clay content categories have closely similar frequency in middle and bottom horizons. Gleying in horizon 1 is observed somewhat less frequently with increasing CaCO3. No consistent trend is found in the other horizons. Soil pH in 0·01 M-CaCl2 (pH8) is between 5·1 and 7·0 in 51% of all samples. pH5, values less than 4 occur in only 8% and are twice as common in top horizons (more than 5 cm thick) as in deeper ones. pH8, values greater than 7 are nearly twice as frequent (31%) in the bottom horizon as in the upper ones. Correlation of pH in water (pHw) with pH8 always exceeds 0·93 irrespective of lithological type. The difference of pHw from pH8 (δpH) calculated from the regression equation is 0·7–0·8 at pH6 values less than 4; it varies inversely with pH8, up to a value of 0·4–0·5 at pH6 greater than 7. Neutrality (pHw, 7) corresponds to pH8 6·5–6·6. There is no indication that δpH is related to altitude or gleying intensity but it varies according to lithological type by about 0·1 unit. Organic-matter content, as indicated by loss on ignition (950 °C) minus 10% of the measured clay percentage (LOIadj%) is little affected by lithological type; decrease with depth is steeper at pH8 less than 4 than at higher pH. Gleyed top horizons contain more organic matter than ungleyed; gradient down the profile is positively related to gleying intensity.

The overall multiple regression of cation exchange capacity (CEC) on clay percentage and organic matter (LOIadj%) is (CEC = 1·21 + 0·40 clay% + 1·32 LOIadj), accounting for 61·4% of the total variance. When lithological types are considered separately the partial regression coefficients for clay percentages are greater in the two calcareous lithological types than in the non-calcareous. With lithological type 5 the large constant term and small coefficient of clay percentage indicate considerable contribution to CEC from particles or aggregates larger than 2 μm. Partial regression coefficients (lithological types 1–4 taken together), although similar both within horizon and within gley category are nevertheless shown to be significantly different. Within pH8 category, both partial regression coefficients increase directly with pH. Calculation of mean values of CEC on a clay basis for horizon 3, where contribution from organic matter is minimal, does not show significant differences between pH8 categories or gley categories.

Although quantification of relationships has been possible, correlations are rarely high, so that predictive power is limited. Availability of soil group or subgroup categorizations using constant definitions based on objective measurements is suggested as a useful way of increasing predictive power within resulting smaller groups. The calculation of geographic (areal) distribution is probably the most useful purpose of a data bank of routine measurements, but the selection of samples to typify soil taxa used in this study would preclude such a use.

The shape of the lactation curve of Sahiwal cows was estimated by fitting a gamma function to 2034 lactations made by 681 cows at two farms in Indo-Gangetic plains of Northern India. The persistency of lactation yield was estimated by three methods: P1, the coefficient of variation among weekly yields; P2, ratio of lactation yield to peak yield, and P3, from the gamma function.

The gamma function fitted to the weekly yields explained 75·9% of the variation. A least-squares analysis of different traits associated with lactation curve shape indicated significant influence of parity, period and season of calving on the lactation curve. The lactation yield, peak yield and daily yield up to the peak were highest for winter calvers, while persistency was highest for monsoon calvers. The milk yield traits showed an increase up to the second or third lactation, while the persistency decreased from the first to eighth lactation with increase in parity order. The lactation curve was also more flat in the first lactation than later. The lactation yield and persistency increased with increase in age at calving independent of parity order. The lactation yield, peak yield, persistency and daily yield up to the peak were positively correlated with service period, lactation length and calving interval.

The heritability and repeatability estimates of different traits, genetic and phenotypic correlations of lactation milk yield with different persistency measures indicated that P2 is a better measure of persistency. The peak yield could be used as a criterion of selection in early lactation to bring about improvement in lactation yield and persistency.

Continuous observations were maintained on a group of 32 White Fulani (Bunaji) heifers at three periods daily, 06.00–12.00 h, 14.00–18.00 h and 18.00–22.00 h, for 112 days, during which time all heifers were recorded for incidence of standing for mounts for a while by a vasectomized bull but for the whole period by other heifers in the group as well as soliciting for mounts. Thirty heifers were judged as showing oestrus. Of the 62 oestrous cycles recorded, 82·2% had mean length (±S.E.) of 22·4 ± 0·7 days. Average duration of oestrus (±S. E.) in 30 heifers was 3·1±0·2 h. There were no significant differences between the three observation periods for the time spent in mounting activities, the duration cf oestrus commenced at the three periods and for the average oestrous periods.

It would appear that closer observation for indicative oestrus between 06.00 and 18.00 h should be valuable for the purpose of oestrus detection in an artificial insemination scheme under the Guinea Savanna condition of Nigeria.

The rate of leaf extension in swards of the perennial ryegrass cv. Perma was monitored continuously from March 1976 to September 1977 in Northern Ireland. In this period air temperature and soil water potential were shown to be closely correlated with leaf extension rate. Simple linear expressions are shown to adequately describe the relationship between temperature and leaf extension rate when the year is divided into a winter phase, in which sward growth is very slow, and the remainder of the year in which temperature is high enough to allow significant sward production. Leaf extension growth occurred at all temperatures above freezing point. Soil water potentials of 0·15 MPa are shown to be capable of significantly reducing leaf extension rate. However, the occurrence of such soil water potentials are sufficiently rare in Northern Ireland as to permit prediction of leaf extension rates in perennial ryegrass from simple daily temperature records.

A small-plot experiment on sandy loam soil at Woburn tested the effects of subsoiling by hand and of incorporating a large dressing of P and K fertilizer into the subsoil.

Ths treatments were applied once in 1973 and their effects were assessed from 1974 to 1977 on the yields of, and N, P, K uptakes by, barley, potatoes, wheat and sugar beet grown in rotation. All crops were present each year and all plots received annual seedbed dressings of N, P and K appropriate to the crop. Dolomitic limestone was applied once in the rotation. The effects of the treatments on P soluble in 0·5 M-NaHCO3 and exchangeable K in surface and subsoils were measured.

Subsoiling alone increased the 4-year mean yield of wheat by 21%, of barley by 24% and of sugar from sugar beet by 11%. Mean yield of potatoes was unaffected.

Incorporating P and K into the subsoil increased the mean yield of potatoes by 16% and further increased mean yield, in addition to the effect of subsoiling, of barley by 20% and of sugar by 4%. Mean yield of wheat was not further affected.

Storage of high moisture grain treated with NaOH in various concentrations and with and without urea showed that while untreated moist grain (17–26% moisture) deteriorated during storage, grain treated with urea and with various concentrations of NaOH had few bacteria and fungal propagules, and was considered safe for feeding. When the grain was treated with NaOH at 35 g/kg air dry weight, there were less than 102·6 bacteria and fungal propagules/g. Similar results were obtained when grain was stored in large batches in an open shed, although at 20 g NaOH/kg grain there was some deterioration after 6 months.

Mouldy grain treated with NaOH showed an immediate decrease in both fungal propagules and bacteria from about 108 to 104/g.

The possibility of using urea to preserve grain was examined in a 5 months storage trial with urea concentrations varying from 0 to 20 g/kg. With 5 g urea/kg grain there was an immediate decrease in the numbers of bacteria and fungal propagules and the results suggest that 10 g/kg would be safe for storage.

The mechanisms of the preservation effects of NaOH and urea are discussed.

Two experiments are reported in which mature, castrated male sheep were used to study the effect of a change of magnesium status, as induced by a continuous intravenous infusion of magnesium, on the faecal output of magnesium. In the first experiment, three artificial diets differing markedly in fibre content but extremely low in magnesium were used and in the second experiment, natural diets of frozen grass and of hay and ground barley.

With the artificial diets, unit change in plasma magnesium concentration gave the same increase in faecal magnesium output with all three diets but on average faecal magnesium output was highest for the diet containing the highest content of fibre and least for the diet containing an intermediate amount of fibre, and the differences, though small, were statistically significant. With the natural diets, there was no significant difference between diets in the increase in faecal magnesium output in response to a change of plasma magnesium concentration but the order of response was much greater than for the artificial diets. It is concluded that absorption of magnesium from the gut is depressed at high plasma magnesium concentrations.
