This paper presents center frequency and bandwidth switchable substrate integrated waveguide filters loaded with PIN diodes. The diodes are added in the slot on the surface of the resonators to switch the resonant frequencies and the coupling coefficients. Although the introduction of the slot causes extra radiation loss, it is small and acceptable. The proposed center frequency switchable filter has four center frequency switchable states of 1.78, 1.82, 1.88, and 1.91 GHz, while the bandwidth only changes ±0.64%. The bandwidth switchable filter has two states with 3 dB bandwidths of 70 and 103 MHz at a center frequency of 2.08/2.09 GHz. The measured performance of the fabricated filters shows good agreement with the simulation.

Wireless network has been emerged as one of the most promising technologies for sensor-integrated applications so far. The ever-increasing demand in long-term chronic monitoring of vital or essential signals is driving a technology revolution in dealing with critical issues of clinical, healthcare, fitness, and wellness, creating multidisciplinary collaborations to benefit mankind. The voltage-controlled oscillator has been one of the important building blocks in this regard. In this paper, we report on study concerning the design and implementation of such a key circuit, with particular emphasis on a μW-level low-power design. All the aspects regarding the oscillator are detailed. The proposed circuit structure and experimental results justifying our work are given as proof of concept.

This article presents the design of an ultra-compact cavity-backed self-diplexing antenna with high isolation employing quarter-mode substrate integrated waveguide (QMSIW). The proposed antenna is constructed by using QMSIW, slot, and two 50Ω feed lines. Two eighth-mode cavity resonators are designed by inserting a slot on the top side of the rectangular substrate integrated waveguide to operate at 2.6 and 4.9 GHz for long-term evolution and public safety band applications, respectively. The proposed design allows to tune any frequency band independently by keeping other bands unaltered. The size of antenna is ultra-compact, due to the use of QMSIW cavity. The isolation between two ports is >35 dB. The antenna achieves 5.34 and 5.68 dBi peak gains at 2.6 and 4.9 GHz, respectively. The efficiency of the antenna is >85% at both frequency bands. The antenna provides more than 20.9 dB front-to-back-ratio and better than 21 dB separation between co-to-cross polarization levels. The designed antenna is validated through fabrication and measurement.

A low-profile, wideband dual-polarized 1 × 2 multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with frequency selective surface (FSS) decoupling technique is presented. Low profile is realized with two different artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) cells out of which one operates at 3.5 GHz and other with dual band at 3.1 and 4.5 GHz. The proposed antenna height is maintained at 0.125λ0 which is significantly reduced when compared with the conventional perfect electric conductor (PEC) ground plane. Wideband dual polarization is enabled by two pairs of bow-tie antenna elements surrounded by a square ring placed in the orthogonal orientation. To mitigate the near-field coupling in 1 × 2 MIMO an FSS wall is constructed with wide band stop characteristics from 2.85 to 4.75 GHz. Measured results show by inserting FSS wall vertically, coupling reduction is improved by 27 dB over the existing coupling and the antenna exhibits a bandwidth of 57.14% (2.95–4.95 GHz) for VSWR<2 with port isolation of more than 25 dB for entire band of operation.

Design and fabrication of a traveling-wave printed planar composite right/left-handed (CRLH) antenna are presented in this paper. The proposed traveling-wave antenna constructed of four unit cells with b-shaped geometries, which each occupy 2.49 mm length, 6.32 mm width, and 0.8 mm height. In this paper, with designing the optimized b-shaped printed planar structure by the standard manufacturing techniques on the printed circuit boards, which perform the roles of the series left-handed (LH) capacitances (CL), the antenna size, bandwidth, and radiation specifications may be improved to the desirable range. Also, to obtaining the desired results the spiral inductors have been used, which play the roles of the shunt LH inductances (LL). The fabricated antenna with the proposed structure can be covered more from 2 GHz measured impedance bandwidth with minimum of the measured gain and radiation efficiency equal to 6.1 dBi and 52.3%, respectively, which happen at 9 GHz. According to the provided results, the proposed compact ultra-wideband traveling-wave antenna is a potential candidate to use in the embedded electronic systems and portable wireless communication devices.

A low-profile slant ±45° polarized antenna for a 4G/5G base station with a dominant path wave propagation model (DPM) is reported in this paper. For dual-polarization and wide impedance bandwidth, the two dipole radiators are crisscrossed and a square metallic ring is integrated with the dipole arms and screwed with the four shorting vias. The antenna operates in Band 40/41/42/43 with strong isolation and low ECC (Envelop Correlation Coefficient). Fabricated antenna results show that the predicted wideband antenna has 13.38% bandwidth in 4G, which is Band 40/41, and 29.33% bandwidth in 5G sub-6 GHz Band 42/43. The antenna has a consistent radiation pattern, a 40 dB XPD (Cross Pol Discrimination), and a beam width of 69.5° ±1.5° in the entire frequency band. Three base station sites were explored to deploy the radiation pattern of a dual-polarized antenna in the 3D EM (Electromagnetic Analysis) tool. To evaluate signal quality, strength, radio network planning, and wave propagation analysis by analyzing antenna performance in real-time scenarios with 64 and 256 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) techniques. For the proposed four-stream MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) antenna arrangement at deployed cell sites for 4G/5G base station applications, the maximum downlink and uplink data rates are 3.826/2.8 Mbps and 1044/800 Mbps respectively.

This paper proposes a triple-band fractal slot antenna with enhanced gain operating at frequencies of 2.7, 3.5, and 4.8 GHz for microwave wireless power transmission. The antenna achieved more than 3 dB gain by preserving the symmetrical defected reflector structure behind it at a length of 0.54λ/4, where λ is the wavelength in free space at 2.7 GHz. A 50 Ω micro-strip line coupled at 66 mm length helps feed the triple band slot antenna. The purpose of a triple-band rectifier circuit with an impedance network is to convert the radio frequency (RF) signal into direct current. The measurements reveal that the antenna’s enhanced gain is 8.8 dB, and the rectifier’s highest RF signal to direct current conversion efficiency is 74.3%. For the combined configuration unit of measure, the antenna is assimilated into the rectifier via back-to-back 50 Ω Sub Miniature Version A (SMA) connectors. The highest recorded efficiency of 49.67% was obtained for the rectenna at optimum values of 1 kΩ resistive load and −5 dBm power input. It has been revealed that the rectifier-integrated antenna presented is effective for low-input RF energy capture and power transmission.

Digital radar waveforms such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) often have the disadvantage that they require high sampling rates if fine range resolutions have to be achieved. The frequency comb OFDM radar scheme offers a possibility to overcome this drawback and to improve the range resolution without increasing the sampling rate. Simultaneously, the high unambiguous velocity, which is one of the advantages of digital radar waveforms, is retained and due to the simple generation of orthogonal transmit signals, it is well suited for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) applications. To prove all these features of the frequency comb OFDM radar scheme, a suitable 4 × 4 MIMO demonstrator including frequency comb generation as well as up- and downconversion with these combs has been set up. Its functionality has been validated with real measurements in an anechoic chamber in conjunction with a radar target simulator to emulate very high velocities.

In this contribution, the impact of extreme environmental conditions in terms of energy-level radiation of protons on silicon–germanium (SiGe)-integrated circuits is experimentally studied. Canonical representative structures including linear (passive interconnects/antennas) and non-linear (low-noise amplifiers) are used as carriers for assessing the impact of aggressive stress conditions on their performances. Perspectives for holistic modeling and characterization approaches accounting for various interaction mechanisms (substrate resistivity variations, couplings/interferences, drift in DC and radio frequency (RF) characteristics) for active samples are down to allow for optimal solutions in pushing SiGe technologies toward applications with harsh and radiation-intense environments (e.g. space, nuclear, military). Specific design prototypes are built for assessing mission-critical profiles for emerging RF and mm-wave applications.

In this paper, an efficient dual function radar-communication system is proposed to improve the system's resource utilization. In this work, we considered a scenario where the location of the communication receiver is known prior but the radar target is moving and its location is changing with time. Therefore, we proposed a closed-loop design that allows an adaptive selection of appropriate information embedding strategies during tracking operations. We used two strategies that utilize the amplitudes and/or phases of the transmitted radar waveforms toward the communication direction according to the position of the communication receiver during each scan. Hence, during each radar illumination, the system carries out a target-tracking task and simultaneously maintains the communication symbols transmission toward the intended communication direction. The simulation results verify the effective performance of the proposed approach in terms of target detection and tracking performance and angular bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, the proposed amplitude phase-shift keying signaling strategy can transmit different communication symbols to different users located within the sidelobe region and also provides a significant improvement in data rate transmission and BER performance compared with the existing sidelobe-based communication strategies.

In this paper, a novel class of balun bandpass filters is presented on slot-line resonator (SLR) toward intrinsic balanced performance in amplitude and phase. The proposed balun filter consists of three inductive-coupled SLRs in the middle, one single-ended unbalanced port, and one balanced port with two terminals. According to the distinct field conversion from the slotline to the microstrip feeding line, good balanced performance in amplitude, and phase performance can be intrinsically realized over a wide frequency range. To validate the proposed technique, a prototype third-order balun filter is designed, fabricated, and measured. Both the simulated and measured results have demonstrated that the proposed balun filter can not only achieve good frequency selectivity but also exhibit intrinsic balanced performance in amplitude and phase.

In this paper, we present a method for multiple target two-dimensional tracking using multiple sensors with very low azimuth resolution. Due to the scarce azimuth resolution, the data association is performed using range and Doppler information only from four radars. The proposed algorithm is tailored to perform in maritime scenarios. In order to test the algorithm performance, sea clutter data have been taken under consideration when simulating data.

To achieve a high IIP2 level on a mixer, static calibration techniques have been developed. Most of them are based on an intentional introduction of a calibrated mismatch in the structure of the mixer. They are performed at production stage. It is also possible to automate them but their activation is strongly limited in portable devices because of system restrictions. Furthermore, IIP2 is sensitive to system variations, thereby degrading the calibration operation. The challenge is so to make the calibration system dynamic, i.e. performing an online calibration. This paper presents a perturbance-based algorithm as part of an automatic calibration system to track the optimum IIP2 level. Measurements validate the algorithm behavior and indicate the feasibility of using it in a complete calibration system for a future on-chip implementation.

A new circularly polarized microstrip array antenna using the orthogonal feed technique is proposed in this paper. The antenna has a multi-layer structure and a new 3-way power divider employing the both-sided microwave integrated circuit technology is designed to configure the feed network of the array. Circular polarization (CP) is realized by creating a quadrature phase difference between orthogonal feed circuits of the patches. The multi-layer structure gives flexibility to adjust the patch spacing that helps to reduce the sidelobe level of the antenna. It is found that the multi-layer structure exhibits a gain of about 2 dB higher than that of a single layer structure by means of sidelobe reduction. The proposed structure also exhibits good CP performances that are verified by a good agreement of measured and simulated results. Simple and compact structure makes the antenna suitable for various wireless applications.

Variable Z0 (VZ0) antenna technology is a new design or optimization methodology applicable to any antenna on any platform designed or optimized with any procedure. It should be particularly useful for wireless devices populating the Internet of Things. VZ0 expands the design or decision space by adding another degree of freedom invariably leading to better antennas. A simple design example illustrates its effectiveness.

In this paper, the design and the measurements of three-dimensional through silicon vias (TSVs) based-integrated solenoids embedded within high-resistive silicon is presented. Prior to silicon implementation, a rigorous theoretical analysis is proposed to put in obviousness the advantages of using such coil architecture for L and S band applications. This analysis, demonstrates a clear reduction of the footprint passive function lying on the external substrate together with a reduced capacitive coupling with the local environment. Two-port radio frequency measurements have been performed in a wide-frequency range (100 MHz – 50 GHz) in order to support the theoretical investigations. Solenoids exhibit high-quality factors below 4 GHz – Q = 25 @ 2 GHz for a 800 pH device – and clearly outperforms classical planar architecture considered in most of the integrated circuit processes. Two different modeling approaches (compact modeling and EM modeling) are then proposed in order to speed-up their design implementation in a typical CAD design flow. Based on the available data, a good agreement is shown between and simulated data.

A new design method for multi-access antennas is presented. This method is based on a modal analysis assuming the microstrip antennas as a resonant cavity. Using this cavity approach, the eigenmodes perturbation induced by the cavity deformation (adding slots or short circuits) is studied. As an application, a solution of multi-access antenna with two ports, with operating frequency bands centered approximately on digital cellular system (DCS) and universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS)/Wi-Fi standards is developed. These two ports are isolated using the previous original design method. In addition to the design method, the innovation of the structure resides on its application in terms of flexibility, reconfigurability, and portability for the future development of a unique system that allows cross services where telephony joined multimedia and online services. The design method and the performances are validated through comparisons between simulations and measurements.

The possibility to characterize infinite and periodic frequency-selective surfaces (FSS) filters that have two orthogonal axes of symmetry inside a waveguide is reported. Thus, preliminary measurements can rapidly be obtained at low cost with few elementary cells instead of using a large FSS panel in free space. This is possible because of the equivalence that exists between the electromagnetic fields of two symmetric and oblique plane waves incident on and reflected from an infinite periodic surface and the incident/reflected fields that exist inside a single-mode rectangular waveguide containing a finite number of elementary cells. Comparisons of the measurements with some full-wave simulations for FSS belonging to the first three groups as they were defined by Munk confirm the good agreement between them. This is an interesting and simple assessment tool concerning the fabrication quality of FSS. The extension of this technique to non-symmetric FSS patterns is also discussed and supported by experimental and simulation results. The limitations of the technique are finally discussed.

In this study, a new ultra-wideband (UWB) band-edge selectivity antenna with a modified radiation slot using defected ground structure (DGS) is presented to obtain bandpass filtering reflection coefficient and gain performance. The well-designed DGS is designed on backside metallic of the substrate and can be seen as a low-pass filter that provides a good roll-off at a higher frequency. By connecting the DGS and the stepped slot and making them merge with each other, good cut-off property in the upper passband and better in-band impedance characteristics are obtained. Measured results show that the proposed design not only shows good band-edge selectivity in reflection coefficient and gain performance but also has a good impedance matching of −13.5 dB reflection coefficients and a good radiation efficiency of 90% in the operating frequencies. The measured bandwidth defined with the reflection coefficient less than −10 dB is from 3.1–11.2 GHz. Furthermore, the size of the filtering UWB antenna is 22 mm × 12 mm, which is smaller than many individual UWB antennas and UWB filters.

This paper presents a novel experimental simulation of ramp-time current control with fuzzy bandwidth for wireless power transmission (WPT) systems. A fuzzy logic control algorithm was designed based on the structure of ramp-time current control in active power filters through simulation of ramp-time bandwidth variation to dynamically adjust the loop width of the ramp-time comparator. Ramp-time current control is the most suitable over other current control techniques and is thus selected for the experiment. Implementation of this approach prevents over-limit of switching frequency and enhances dynamic responses, resulting in long lifespan of power switches and smooth output for WPT systems. Finally, the hypothesis and simulation results were verified by analyzing the prototype model and experiment results.
