A novel wideband reflectarray antenna (RA) is designed for 5G millimeter (mm) wave communications in the frequency range of 26.5–36 GHz. The proposed unit cell is constructed using a grid periodicity of 0.52${{\lambda }_0}{ }$ that offers 636° phase change through phase delay lines (PDLs) (${{\theta }_{\text{s}}}$). These PDLs are attached to the outer end of the unit cell comprising semi-circular rings. Bandwidth enhancement is achieved by incorporating a corrugated slot technique and a suitable air gap beneath the substrate. The proposed center-fed reflectarray is composed of 513 elements distributed in a circular aperture (13.46${{\lambda }_0}$). Using mirror-symmetrical distribution of the unit cells, a cross-polarization reduction as low as −50 dB is realized. At 30 GHz, RA has a measured peak gain of 28.2 dBi, a sidelobe level of −14.3 dB, and an aperture efficiency of 31.4%. The prototype antenna is fabricated, and the simulation results are experimentally validated. The measured 1-dB and 3-dB gain bandwidths of the proposed reflectarray antenna are 31.3% and 41.6%, respectively. The proposed broadband reflectarray can be a potential choice for inter-satellite services like inter-satellite networking/satellite positioning and control; fixed satellite services such as GPS satellite synchronization and data direct to home TV; and satellite position fixing.

A mathematical model of variable inclination continuous transverse stub (VICTS) antenna for low sidelobe design is proposed in this paper. VICTS antenna is an antenna with continuous transverse stubs on the parallel-plate waveguide and additional branches attached to the transverse stubs to generate radiation. The antenna using this technique has high aperture efficiency and keeps a significant solution for high-gain antenna. However, the sidelobe level (SLL) of this antenna is relatively high and increases continuously as the pitch angle decreases. This paper presents a fast calculation model for the SLL of VICTS antennas using leaky-wave theory and antenna array theory. The full-wave simulation results and model calculation results are in good agreement, so this model can be used for SLL suppression of VICTS antennas in different frequency bands. By controlling the aperture field distribution to be tapered, the SLL is suppressed to − 23.7 dB using this mathematical model.

A linearly polarized dual band reflectarray (RA) antenna designed, fabricated, and tested to operate in the Ku and K band frequencies is reported in this paper. The 24 × 24 cm2 size RA is developed using 1058 integrated elements etched over a 0.275 mm thick Rogers RT5870 substrate. The integrated elements include concentric circular rings distributed co-centric with the source and the Malta cross elements distributed offset from the source. The distribution of these elements is done based on the 590 and 360° phase change observed at 14.25 (Ku) and 22.5 (K) GHz by varying the size of the circular rings and the Malta cross respectively. The designed RA offers a simulated gain of 28.62 dBi at 14.25 GHz and 26.92 dBi at 22.5 GHz. These results are validated experimentally using the fabricated prototype. A measured peak gain of 28 and 26.4 dBi are observed with sidelobe levels (SLL) of −21 and −11 dB at 14.25 and 22.5 GHz respectively. The cross-polarization levels measured at the resonant frequencies are <−31 and <−28 dB. The proposed dual-band RA covers the entire Ku band uplink frequencies utilized for fixed satellite services and the K band downlink frequencies useful for earth exploration satellite services.

This paper presents an overview of the principles suitable for wireless power supply of devices with a small power input in picocells. This means predominantly different types of small electric devices in the space of rooms. Basic principles, namely electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic wave, are explained using examples of developed systems. Different types of wireless power systems are compared with respect to efficiency, frequency, power, and transmission distance.

In this paper, we present a near-field microwave microscopy method for the characterization of dielectric materials samples in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. The system proposed is composed of a probe coupled to a dielectric resonator (DR) operating in the TE011 mode. Latter this is used to fix the resonance frequency of the resonator at 2.45 GHz. This system is used for the characterization of dielectric samples with accuracy and high spatial resolution, knowing that they do not have predetermined forms, but a small plane surface.The same device is used for a multi-frequency characterization (4–20 GHz) using resonance frequencies of the cavity instead of one resonance frequency of the DR.

This paper furnishes a compact modified hourglass-shaped aperture-coupled antenna for radar applications. The effect of slots of various shapes and various slot lengths on the input impedance, radiation pattern, and gain of the antenna are analyzed. The proposed antenna, designed using a modified hourglass-shaped aperture, offers a gain of 8.214 dBi for an compact antenna with a dimension of 20.4 × 20.4 × 1.041 mm3 and an aperture area of 2.495 mm2. Implementation of this proposed modified hourglass-shaped aperture offers a high gain per unit radiating patch area of 40.26 dB/$\lambda _g ^2$ and a high gain per unit aperture area of 1324.84 dB/$\lambda _g ^2$. The proposed aperture feeds a circular patch which radiates at its resonant frequency of 10.5 GHz. The proposed design is fabricated and the simulated results are verified experimentally. Equivalent circuit analysis is also done. A measured gain of 7.2 dBi is observed at 10.5 GHz. The physical area of the antenna is reduced without compromising the gain by judiciously choosing the shape of slot with more degree of freedom for impedance matching. The proposed antenna is well suited for the unit cell of phased array antennas for X-band missile radar applications.

In this article, the development of a high-efficiency power amplifier (PA) with the inverse class-F configuration and a novel 3/4 spiral defected ground structure (DGS) is presented. The proposed DGS structure has improved rejection characteristic and its resonance frequencies are more convenient to adjust than conventional symmetric and asymmetric spiral structure. The electromagnetic-simulated result shows that the proposed circuit has improved harmonic control performance with simplified structure and less return loss than the conventional microstrip harmonic control circuit. The 3/4 spiral harmonics control circuit (HCC) can be modeled by three parallel RLC resonators. Using the proposed structure a high-performance harmonic control circuit is designed for implementing an inverse class-F PA. For comparison, two inverse class-F PAs operating at 2.4 GHz have been implemented by the microstrip HCC and the proposed HCC, respectively. According to the experiment results, the size of the proposed inverse class-F PA is reduced by 20%, the power-added efficiency and the gain are increased by 4.8% and 1.5 dB, respectively.

The narrow bandwidth of microstrip antennas is one of the most important features that restrict its wide usage. This paper presents a new coplanar waveguide-fed compact rectangular microstrip antenna with the improvement of the bandwidth using the slot geometry and cutting rectangular periodic edges for the patch radiator. To develop this structure, we have conducted many optimization and investigation using Momentum Software integrated into ADS “Advanced Design System” and comparison of the results with CST Microwave Studio. The comparison between the simulation and measurement results permits to validate the final achieved antenna with an improvement of the bandwidth. This antenna has wide matching input impedance ranging from 1.7 to 3.5 GHz with a return loss less than −10 dB, corresponding to bandwidth 69.7% at 2.6 GHz as a frequency center. The antenna achieved is a low cost, planar, and easy to be fabricated, thus promising for multiple applications in wireless communication systems. Details of the proposed antenna design and both simulated and experimental results are described and discussed.

Two compact resonant near-field sensors are introduced for the characterization of aqueous solutions at 5 GHz. They are based on folded substrate-integrate circular half-mode resonators with a planar sensing tip. Owing to the planar design, the sensor is simple and cheap to manufacture, and a sample can be easily coupled to the resonator from the top. The operating principle of the sensor is explained and verified by both simulation and measurement. The radiation of the sensors is quantified by means of a quality factor analysis. Finally, a previously introduced calibration method based on the perturbation theory is applied to the sensors and its accuracy is improved by choosing more suitable reference materials.

The front-end circuitry of transceiver modules is slowly being updated from GaAs-based monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) to Gallium-Nitride (GaN). Especially GaN power amplifiers and T/R switches, but also low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), offer significant performance improvement over GaAs components. Therefore it is interesting to also explore the possible advantages of a GaN mixer to enable a fully GaN-based front-end. In this paper, the design-experiment and measurement results of a double-balanced image-reject mixer MMIC in 0.25 μm AlGaN/GaN technology are presented. First an introduction is given on the selection and dimensioning of the mixer core, in relation to the linearity and conversion loss. At the intermediate frequency (IF)-side of the mixer, an active balun has been used to compensate partly for the loss of the mixer. An on-chip local-oscillator (LO) signal amplifier has been incorporated so that the mixer can function with 0 dBm LO input power. After the discussion of the circuit design the measurement results are presented. The performance of the mixer core and passive elements has been demonstrated by measurements on a test-structure. The mixer MMIC measured conversion loss is <8 dB from 6 to 12 GHz, at 1 GHz IF and 0 dBm LO power. The measured image rejection is better than 30 dB.

In this letter, a passive high-selectivity dual-band filter with two controllable transmission zero (TZ) pairs is proposed, while synthesis method and control mechanism of the two TZ pairs are investigated. Specifically, by employing the magnetic/electric mixed coupling (MEMC), source–load coupling (S–L coupling) and stepped-impedance resonators, a dual-band bandpass filter with two pairs of controllable TZs is constructed. Two controllable TZ pairs can be independently adjusted by re-modifying the associated coupling structures. To validate the synthesizability and controllability of the TZ pairs, mathematical synthesis, and EM simulations are carried out. Two demonstrative filters with identical passband performance and different central TZ distributions for GSM (0.9/1.8 GHz) are designed and measured. The analysis and experimental results show that the synthesis-controllable TZ pair (fz2, fz3) introduced by MEMC can be synthesized and controlled using inline mixed coupling synthesis, and the optimization-controllable TZ pair (fz1, fz4) because of S–L coupling is controlled by S–L coupling strength optimization procedure.

Structures of tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) of the circular cross-section of 50 and 200 nm and length up to 1 mm form a communication system between cells. While transport of material such as endocytic vesicles, mitochondria, proteins, cytoplasmic molecules, etc., is experimentally proven, a possible transfer of electric and electromagnetic energy across TNTs corresponding to electrotechnical processes of excitation, propagation, and amplification in cavity systems is yet in a beginning stage of research. The ideas presented in this paper are based on technical mechanisms applied to submicroscopic systems. Main features of corrugated periodic structures, electromagnetic circular waveguides, the Manley–Rowe amplification, the Fröhlich non-linear interaction of coherent electric polar vibrations, and description of cut-off frequency propagating limits in the waveguide and cavities and along periodic structures are discussed. We suggest that cell-to-cell connection with TNTs may form a unified coherent cavity system which enables simultaneity and mutual cooperation in multicellular organisms.

We present the design, fabrication, and measurement of a 2-way modified Wilkinson divider constructed in a coplanar geometry exhibiting ultra wideband isolation, transmission, and port matching in the millimeter-wave frequency range. The proposed divider replaces the lumped resistor in the conventional Wilkinson divider with two quarter-wave length transmission lines, a phase inverter, and two 2Z0 resistors. Except for the three ports that are coplanar waveguides (CPWs), the main body of the divider uses coplanar striplines (CPS). The phase inverter is realized using a simple airbridge-based crossover which is compatible with a modern monolithic microwave integrated circuit process. The divider has a ring-like configuration fabricated on a 620 µm thick semi-insulating GaAs wafer using electron beam lithography (EBL) technology. Three-dimensional (3D) full-wave electromagnetic simulations have been carried out to optimize the design and investigate the possible effect of fabrication tolerance on the performance of the crossover and the divider. Two dividers working at center frequencies of 25 and 80 GHz have been designed, fabricated, and tested. They all show consistent performance in terms of bandwidth, isolation, and port matching. Experimental and simulation results are in excellent agreement.

A new class of 3-dB impedance transforming directional couplers has been proposed in which the recently published coupled-line couplers, consisting of coupled-line sections having different electrical lengths, have been utilized. The main advantage of the proposed directional couplers is the possibility of obtaining high impedance transformation ratio, thus the known limiting condition of realizable impedance transformation in 3-dB couplers is overcome. Moreover, the proposed directional couplers feature significantly wider operational bandwidths. The theoretical analysis of the proposed impedance-transforming directional couplers has been shown and is fully supported by the measurements of the manufactured model operating in 0.5–1.5 GHz frequency range.

An ultra-wideband (UWB) highly compact bandpass filter with extremely high passband bandwidth is presented. The proposed structure is made using three-staged stepped-impedance lines and a composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) synthesized with meander fractal like ring slot in the ground and series capacitive gap in conductor strip. The capacitive gap in conductor strip and meander fractal like ring slot in the ground plane play major role for controlling the lower and higher cut-off frequencies. The equivalent circuit model of proposed filter is demonstrated and lumped parameters are extracted. A prototype is fabricated to experimentally validate the performance of proposed filter. The proposed UWB filter has extremely wide −10 dB return loss passband bandwidth from 3.14 to 18.26 GHz with relative bandwidth of 142% and insertion loss better than 0.5 dB. Also it achieves a wide upper-stopband from 19.7 to 24.4 GHz with insertion loss better than 13.0 dB, return loss <1.5 dB and sharpened rejection skirts outside the passband at both lower and upper frequency ends. Good agreement is found between simulated and measured results with measured group delay variation in the passband <0.65 ns.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for obtaining wideband spectral information of the target in microwave imaging systems by using broadband frequency reconfigurable printed transceivers. The proposed transceiver is composed of two embedded stacked microstrip antenna configurations operating in C-band (5.5–8.5 GHz) and X-band (8.5–11.5 GHz) with each having 3 GHz bandwidth. The transceiver switches between the two configurations (and thus frequency bands) using PIN diodes and collects response of the antenna in the presence of the target, in both the operating bands. This information is then combined to obtain wideband spectral information of the target from 5.5 to 11.5 GHz to achieve improved image reconstruction. The proposed reconfigurable transceiver has advantage over traditional broadband transceivers (those have slots/meandering at ground plane to achieve wideband response) that it has unidirectional radiation patterns throughout its band of operation. Hence the imaging system is implemented without the absorbers. This keeps the system compact and inconspicuous when installed for security applications. Here, a bistatic system is employed with two-dimensional target scanning performed in a real outdoor environment.

It is difficult to detect a stationary object in practice, especially in an unknown indoor environment, because (a) there is no distinct speed difference between the targets and the background; (b) responses of the targets are contaminated by dense unknown clutter; (c) a priori knowledge of the background is not always available for some scenarios. In this paper, a set of ultra-wideband sensors are used to detect a stationary target with a planar diffuse surface. It is shown that, the relative spectrum-shifts of the data after data-projection operation, are closely connected to the illumination-angle differences. Based on this, a detector is designed, and the location and the orientation of the target are determined. In order to mitigate the influence of clutters, a “time-shift & accumulation” scheme is designed to enhance the signal. As a consequence, the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio is increased. In addition, results from measurement in a realistic indoor environment are provided.

This paper reports the test results of a small-scale prototype that implements a digitally beam-formed phased antenna array in the E-band. A four-channel dual-conversion receive RF module for 71–76 GHz frequency band has been developed and integrated with a linear end-fire antenna array. Wideband frequency-domain angle-of-arrival estimation and beam-forming algorithms were developed and implemented using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying (QPSK) at 1 Gbps. Measured performance is very close to the simulated results and experimental data for an analogue-beam-formed array. This work is a stepping stone toward practical realization of larger hybrid arrays in the E-band.

Since Hodgkin and Huxley described the nerve axon as a cable (H–H model), many efforts have been made to find more approximated transmission line models representing the nerve axon. This paper describes a simple model that represents the nerve axon in two parts: the internodal space as a lossy thin-film microstrip line and the node of Ranvier as an active complex load. The complex load terminating the transmission line is given by the variable impedance of a tunnel diode. First, the internodal space is circuitally analyzed and electromagnetically simulated as a lossy thin-film microstrip line terminated on a complex fixed load. The transmission line circuit theory, the two-port network analysis, and a two-dimensional finite difference time domain method are used for such a task by forcing a strip subatomic metallization. Then, the transfer function of the internodal space, cascaded with the node of Ranvier, is equated to the transfer function of a transmission line section that includes a tunnel diode. This procedure is carried out in order to obtain the diode's variable impedance. The diode was introduced by Nagumo, Arimoto, and Yoshizawa for simulating the nerve axon as an active transmission line. The active transmission line is represented by the FitzHugh simplified H–H model known as the Bonhoeffer–van der Pol model.
