A new time reversal (TR) method for target imaging is proposed in this paper. Through single measurement by the antenna array, the received signals are utilized to form the space–frequency–frequency multistatic data matrix (MDM). Singular value decomposition is applied to the matrix to obtain the left singular vectors which span the signal subspace. The obtained vectors are divided into multiple subvectors by two different schemes and used to provide target signatures in the form of coarse frequency dependence and relative phase shifts that can be exploited to construct the imaging function. The performance of the proposed method is investigated through numerical simulations for both single and multiple targets, and the results are compared with the traditional TR method using the frequency–frequency MDM. It turned out that the proposed method is able to achieve high resolution with limited array aperture and shows satisfactory robustness in noise environment. Furthermore, experimental results are provided to show the availability of the method in practical applications.

The measurement accuracy of low-frequency narrow-band antenna is heavily influenced by its environment, which is also difficult to remove the clutter with a time gating. This paper proposes a method to improve the measurement accuracy of low-frequency narrow-band antenna using signal processing technique. The method is to predict the unknown value out of received original signal with an auto-regressive model (AR model) based on modern spectral estimation theory, and the parameters in AR model are calculated by maximum entropy spectral estimation algorithm. Thus, a wideband signal compared with the original band is obtained, and then the time-domain resolution is enhanced. The time gating is more exactly to separate the antenna radiation signal from multipath signals. The simulation and experimental results show that about 50% extended data for each ends of original band can be obtained after spectral extrapolation, and the time-domain resolution after extrapolation is twice than the original narrow-band signal, and the influence of measurement environment can be eliminated effectively. The method can be used to improve accuracy in actual antenna measurement.

In this paper, the characteristics of microwave propagation channels in drill pipe bore are analyzed by regarding the drill pipe as an irregular lossy cylindrical waveguide. An attenuation law is modeled using multipath propagation theory and an experimental statistical method. It is shown from physical measurement results that 5″ and $5^{1/2 \prime \prime} $ drill pipe bores, widely applied in the field of air drilling, can be used as 2.4 GHz band microwave channels with the caveat that the numerous reflective surfaces in the joint section of the drill pipe produce a great deal of reflected waves. Hence, the drill pipe bore has the characteristics of a dual cluster multipath channel, and multipath fading and delay are the primary factors affecting propagation quality. The study's constructed microwave attenuation model, based on multipath channels, can be regarded as the average attenuation of the unit length in the drill pipe bore, and can be used as the basis for simulation and analysis of the longer drill pipe string. In addition, a large delay between the two clusters leads to a significant increase of the root mean square delay spread. Consequently, multipath fading and delay are the main factors affecting the channel transmission rate.

The implementation of stable, accurate, and wideband second-order microwave integrators (SOMIs) is presented in this paper. These designs of SOMIs are obtained by using different combinations of transmission line sections and shunt stubs in cascading. Particle swarm optimization (PSO), cuckoo search algorithm (CSA), and gravitational search algorithm (GSA) are applied to obtain the optimal values of the characteristic impedances of these line elements to approximate the magnitude response of ideal second-order integrator (SOI). The performance measure criteria for the proposed SOMIs are carried out based on magnitude response, absolute magnitude error, phase response, convergence rate, pole-zero plot, and improvement graph. The simulation results and statistical analysis demonstrate that GSA surpasses the PSO and CSA to approximate the ideal SOI in all state-of-the-art, that is eligible for wide-band microwave integrator. The designed SOMI is compact in size and suitable to cover microwave applications. The magnitude errors for the proposed SOMIs GSA based are as low as 4.9954 and 3.6573, respectively. The structure of the designed SOMI is implemented in the form of microstrip line on RT/Duroid substrate with dielectric constant 2.2 and having height 0.762 mm. The simulated and measured magnitude result agrees well with the ideal one in the frequency range of 3–15 GHz.

In this paper, a miniaturized open-ended dual-band band-pass filter with stepped series capacitance and shunt meandered line inductance for microwave frequency applications has been designed and discussed. In order to offer ease of fabrication and uniplanar configuration, coplanar waveguide feeding arrangement has been used. Zeroth order resonance, a special phenomenon of composite right/left handed transmission line has been utilized to miniaturize the filter size. The designed filter structure offers miniaturization with overall footprint size of 0.26λg × 0.19λg, where λg is the guided wavelength at the center frequency of 1.46 GHz. It offers 58.90% (1.03–1.89 GHz) and 25.93% (2.55–3.31 GHz) measured −3 dB fractional bandwidth with respect to the center frequencies of 1.46 and 2.93 GHz, respectively. Dispersion plot has been utilized to discuss the metamaterial properties for the proposed dual-band band-pass filter. In addition to above, the proposed filter structure presents almost flat group delay curve within both passbands. The proposed filter structure can be suitably utilized for distinct wireless applications, for example global navigation satellite system (1.559–1.610 GHz), GSM1800 (1.7–1.8 GHz), Wi-MAX (2.5–2.7 GHz), and naval radar and air traffic control (2.7–2.9 GHz).

In this paper, we propose a novel study of zero-index materials (ZIM) based on lumped element circuits using a wave concept iterative method (WCIP). This method is well used to demonstrate the behavior of zero-index-based microwave applications. This type of metamaterial can maintain the amplitude and the phase of an electromagnetic wave to be constant through the ZIM region, which is an important property to design an in-phase power divider-combiner, enhance the directivity of an embedded source, channel electromagnetic waves without reflection at the interface between waveguides with different cross-sections, and control the transmission of electromagnetic wave by the adjustment of the permittivity of a dielectric defect coated by zero-index metamaterial. The numerical simulations using the WCIP method match the literature and commercial software simulator results.

In this paper, the patch-type frequency selective surfaces (FSS) based on substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is proposed to improve the bandwidth (BW) and angular performance. The proposed FSS configuration overcomes the limitations of both conventional 2D and 3D FSS structures. A closely coupled cascaded mechanism is employed to combine two identical FSS elements separated by thin dielectric substrate results in incorporation of SIW technology; hence, named as 2.5D FSS. A derived equivalent circuit model is used to estimate the basic performance of proposed FSS–SIW elements, and the response of analytical expressions has been validated and final design is obtained using full-wave simulations. Two basic FSS elements viz. single square loop and a Jerusalem cross have been investigated to prove the enhancement in their BW and angular stability. The proposed technique evidently improves the BW and angular stability of FSS structures than in its established form. Besides, various important parameters that influence the performance characteristics of reported 2.5D FSSs are also studied. The important observations made on the thickness, as the thickness increases the bandstop FSS, can change to bandpass FSS. Finally, the proposed FSS structure has been fabricated and measured using free space measurement setup, to show the effectiveness of theoretical results. The measured results show good agreement with simulated results at normal and oblique incidence angle.

In this paper, the solution of the inverse scattering problem for determining the shape and location of perfectly conducting scatterers by making use of electromagnetic scattered fields is presented. Based on the boundary condition and the measured scattered field, a set of nonlinear integral equations is derived and the imaging problem is reformulated into an optimization one. Then, two evolutionary algorithms are used to solve the inverse scattering problem. To further clarify, our contribution is to test two well-known algorithms in the literature to the problem of microwave imaging. The hybrid approaches combine the standard particle swarm optimization (PSO) with the ideas of the simulated annealing and extremal optimization algorithms, respectively. Both of them are shown to be more efficient than original PSO technique. Reconstruction results by using the two presented schemes are compared with exact shapes of some conducting cylinders; and good agreements with the original shapes are observed.

This study introduces an alternative approach to the numerical solution of two-dimensional (2D) electromagnetic scattering problems by a numerical method of moments (MoM). The real source position vector is replaced by a complex quantity, then Green's function generates a complex source point beam, therefore the interactions between the far zone elements in the impedance matrix are neglected, except the basis functions near to the edges, strongly localizing the impedance matrix. The memory storage increases with the number of edges, but for a fixed number of the edges, it is linearly proportional with N, i.e. O(N). Consequently, the overall running time can be drastically reduced and the far zone scattering pattern and the near field can be found. The proposed procedure is first explained for the single perfectly electrically conducting (PEC) strip geometry, then extended to the scattering by 2D PEC objects with closed polygonal cross-sections. Numerical results are presented for a strip and a square cylinder in both polarizations. The relative errors are also compared with the standard MoM.

A four-element wide-band octagonal ring-shaped antenna is proposed for human interface device and S-band applications. The isolation structure comprises a parasitic element and a T-shaped structure. The antenna has −10 dB impedance bandwidth 63% (2.1–4.0 GHz) with miniaturized dimension of 54.98 mm × 76 mm. The multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna gain is 2.83 dBi at the 2.4 GHz resonant frequency. The designed MIMO has envelop correlation coefficient of 0.026 in the 2:1 VSWR band. The −10 dB total active reflection coefficient bandwidth of 1.2 GHz has been achieved in the entire frequency band, and has MEG value of ≤−3 dB. The specific absorption rate has found below the safety limit near the human head, palm and wrist.

A dual-polarized dual-layer wideband microstrip antenna is presented. Dual orthogonal linear polarization and enhanced isolation between two ports are achieved by employing two radiating patches perpendicular to each other and printed on two separate substrates. Broadband behavior of the antenna is realized by using two wideband double-sided printed strip dipole and angular ring as radiating patches along with wideband baluns as feeding system. The patches are connected to baluns with two separate twin-lead transmission lines. Moreover, to improve the impedance bandwidth of the strip dipole significantly, a diamond-shape parasitic patch is artily incorporated into the top side of the upper layer of the antenna. The proposed antenna can easily be employed in large-scale arrays thanks to the feeding system of the patches. A prototype is fabricated to verify the simulation results where the measurement results show the −10 dB impedance bandwidths of 40% (4.3–6.5 GHz) and 43% (4.2–6.5 GHz) at port #1 and port #2, respectively. Besides, the isolation between two ports and the radiation gain are obtained around 35 dB and 9 dBi, respectively, which are useful for WLAN applications.

In this paper, two different radiating structures fed with modified L-probe, are reported using a circuit theory concept. The proposed antennas are operating in wireless local area network (WLAN) and universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) frequency bands. In the first design, an E-shaped patch is studied to increase the bandwidth. It is observed that the bandwidth is directly proportional to notch dimensions. In the second design, E-shaped patch is modified to reduce the antenna size up to 30% with high bandwidth. In the first design, measured bandwidth and gain achieved are 32.68% (1.92–2.67 GHz) and 8.43 dBi while in second design it is 34.19% (1.94–2.74 GHz) and 8.39 dBi, respectively. Radiation patterns for both the antennas are symmetrical and broadside in nature. The proposed antennas are fabricated and measured results compare well with the theoretical and simulated results.
