This outline is prepared based on the 1995 Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (“The 1995 Constitution”). It is important to acknowledge at the outset that the 1995 Constitution cannot be studied in isolation. Like its forerunners, it is not distinctively Ethiopian, save for the customary and religious laws that it recognized. Ethiopian constitutions, both past and present, have been derived, in part, from foreign constitutions including constitutions from western and eastern countries, including Japan. Although its immediate sources can be traced back to the Charter of the Transitional Government of 1991, this 1995 Constitution was built upon the constitutions that preceded it, the laws that have been promulgated since the 1930s, and the religious and customary laws that predated it.

The consolidation of European integration in the most important institutional sectors and, in particular, the abolition of obstacles impeding the free circulation of persons, goods, services and capital, has made it imperative to attain a higher level of cooperation at a pan-European level in the areas of justice and internal affairs. The elimination of the frontiers has in fact drawn increasing attention to a rather worrying paradox: the retention of juridical and regulatory barriers has allowed organised crime to exploit the incongruities which derive from the existence of the fifteen different juridical systems of Member States of the European Union.

This study examines the interpretation of the American Bar Association's accreditation standard for law schools in the United States and the effect it could have on minority students studying in such law schools. It shows how such students will be greatly disadvantaged. It also shows the principle underlying the solution and how academic law libraries can aid in solving the problem and make a diverse bar a reality.

It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to address you, law librarians from countries all over the world, about a problem that you may well have been faced with, namely that it is often difficult if not impossible to find English translations of legislation. I will start with this topic followed by the need for Guidelines for translators of legislation.

Libraries play a very important role in national socio-economic development. They comprise books, buildings, a wide variety of materials and other support systems and more recently, technology. Their purpose is to serve as agents of instruction, reference and research for educational institutions, professional organizations, industrial concerns and communities. Law libraries for instance have highly specialized materials to support the advancement of learning about law or for the practice of law.

How do I find Romanian statutes and cases in English? How might I better understand treaty research and use of travaux préparatoires, find available online and print resources for international agreements, and obtain a cogent overview of this topic? What sources might be helpful for researching religious legal systems, such as Hindu, Buddhist, or Islamic law? Where can I find a description of the legal system of Belarus? As U.S. law schools are becoming increasingly global in their scope and preparation of students and LLM programs abound, law librarians will more frequently encounter foreign, comparative, and international law reference questions like the above. In addition, if a reference librarian does not have a background or exposure to foreign, comparative, and international research or if there isn't a foreign and international law librarian at the institution, reliance on available online reference sources, such as research guides, and traditional reference works in foreign and international law will be essential. One excellent online resource that provides research guidance in the areas of foreign, comparative, and international law and has an authoritative and fascinating portal of research articles is GlobaLex.

Relationships with international universities for the purposes of benchmarking, international best practice and strategic partnerships for competitive advantage are all leading to practices which are shaping the destiny of the University of Melbourne. With the world's attention focused on the Persian Gulf crisis during the latter part of 1990 and the important part played in the situation by the United Nations Security Council, the 45th session of the UN General Assembly received very little attention in the press. In general, however, this post-Cold War session was considered a success, with an unprecedented number of resolutions adopted by consensus. As usual there were numerous resolutions of interest to the legal community.
