Let ∧ denote a basic artin ring and r its radical. In most of this paper we assume that r2 = 0 and that Λ is a trivial extension Λ/r ⋉ r (see Section 1 for definition). Let P1 …, Pn be the non-isomorphic indecomposable projective (left) Λ-modules, and consider triples (Pi, Mi, ui), where the Mi, are (left) Λ-modules and ui:rPi → Mi/rMi isomorphisms. From this data we construct a new ring Г, which in “nice cases” has the property that r′3 = 0, Г/r′2 ≅ Λ, and r′ Qi ≅ Mi as (left) Λ-modules, where the Qi are the indecomposable projective (left) Г-modules and r′ is the radical of Г.

Any extension of a group A by a group B can be embedded in their wreath product A Wr B. Here we consider generalizations of this result for inverse semigroups.

Suppose S is an inverse semigroup and ρ0 is a congruence on S. We put T = S/ρ0 and denote the natural map from S to T by ρ. The kernel of ρ is the inverse image ETρ−1 of the semilattice ET of idempotents of T. First we show that if each ρ0-class of idempotents of S is inversely well-ordered, then S can be embedded in K Wr T, the standard wreath product of K and T. In general, not all elements of K Wr T have inverses. However, we can define a wreath product W(K, T) which is an inverse semigroup and which contains S when the previous condition holds. If ρ0 is idempotent-separating and S is 0-bisimple, K is the union of zero and a family of isomorphic groups. In this case, we can replace K by a single component group G of K, augmented by zero, and show that S can be embedded in W(G0, T). These results are analogous to the extension theories of D'Alarcao [1] and Munn [3] and they give conditions under which all inverse semigroup extensions of an inverse semigroup A by an inverse semigroup T are contained in a semigroup with structure depending only on A and T.

In this paper all graphs will be ordinary graphs, i.e. finite, undirected, and without loops or multiple edges. For points x and y of a graph G, we shall indicate that x is adjacent to y by writing x ⊥ y, and if x is not adjacent to y we shall write xy. We shall denote the degree of a point x by δ(x) and the minimal degree of G by δ(G).

By the line graph of a graph G we shall mean the graph L(G) whose points are the edges of G, with two points of L(G) adjacent whenever they are adjacent in G. A graph G is said to be a line graph if there exists a graph H such that G = L(H).

In this paper we consider differential equations of the form

where the coefficients Ai are holomorphic functions in a domain G1 × G2 ⊂ C × C. We restrict our attention to those equations for which it is possible to represent the solutions in the form

where g1(z1) and g2(z2) are arbitrary holomorphic functions in G1 and G2 respectively. The coefficients a1, k and a2, k depend on the given differential equation. Within the last ten years a number of publications have been devoted to this kind of representation of solutions.

Throughout the present note we abbreviate the set of p parameters a1,…,ap by (ap), with similar interpretations for (bq), etc. Also, by [(ap)]m we mean the product , where [λ]m = Г(λ + m)/ Г(λ), and so on. One of the main results we give here is the expansion formula

which is valid, by analytic continuation, when, p,q,r,s,t and u are nonnegative integers such that p+r < q+s+l (or p+r = q+s+l and |zω| <1), p+t < q+u (or p + t = q + u and |z| < 1), and the various parameters including μ are so restricted that each side of equation (1) has a meaning.

Our main purpose is to describe those separated locally convex spaces which can serve as domain spaces for a closed graph theorem in which the range space is an arbitrary Banach space of (linear) dimension at most c, the cardinal number of the real line R. These are the δ-barrelled spaces which are considered in §4. Many of the standard elementary Banach spaces, including in particular all separable ones, have dimension at most c. Also it is known that an infinite dimensional Banach space has dimension at least c (see e.g. [8]). Thus if we classify Banach spaces by dimension we are dealing, in a natural sense, with the first class which contains infinite dimensional spaces.

Let R be a ring (with identity). We shall call R a local ring if R is aright noetherian ring such that the Jacobson radical M is a maximal ideal (and so is the only maximal ideal), and R/M is a simple artinian ring. A local ring R with maximal ideal M is called regular if there exists a chain

of ideals Mi of such that Mi–1/Mi is generated by a central regular element of R/Mi (1 ≦ i ≦ n). For such a ring R, Walker [6, Theorem 2. 7] proved that R is prime and n is the right global dimension of R, the Krull dimension of R, the homological dimension of theR-module R/M and the supremum of the lengths of chains of prime ideals of R. Such regular local rings will be called n-dimensional. The aim of this note is to give examples of regular local rings. These arise as localizations of universal enveloping algebras of nilpotent Lie algebras over fields and localizations of group algebras of certain finitely generated finite-by-nilpotent groups.

Green's relations are essential for “co-ordinatizing” semigroups. Jacqueline Klasa, in applying cognate ideas to categories [4, 5], has shown that divisibility in suitably-behaved categories may be described in terms of subobjects and quotients.

Here it is shown that adjoint functors which are onto objects preserve divisibility (in a certain sense). The inclusion functor of the category of sets into the category R of binary relations is such a functor. A slight modification of its right adjoint allows the representation of R as a full subcategory in a category CSL of complete semilattice morphisms.

In this note we formally solve the following triple integral equations,

where f1(x), f2(x) and f3(x) are integrable for 0<x<α, α<x<β and β<x<∞, respectively, and the function g(λ) is assumed to satisfy sufficient conditions for the Fourier sine transform to exist. A special case of this system arose in a problem concerned with transistors.

In the course of a study of commutator subgroups I. D. Macdonald [1] presented the free nilpotent group G4 of class 2 on 4 generators as an example of a nilpotent group whose commutator subgroup has elements that are not commutators. To demonstrate this he proceeded as follows: let G4 = 〈a1, a2, a3, a4〉 and put cij = [ai, aj] for 1 ≦ i < j ≦ 4. Then the relations in G4 are [cij, ak] = 1 for 1 ≦ i < j ≦ 4 and 1 ≦ k ≦ 4, and their consequences. Macdonald observed that an arbitrary commutator may be written as

It follows that the element c13c24 in G′4 (for which δ12 = δ14 = δ23 = δ34 = 0 and δ13 = δ24 = 1) is not a commutator.

Let ℱ be a smooth foliation of codimension p on a smooth manifold Mm. We can define ℱ by an atlas of coordinate charts (U, (x, y)), called leaf charts, where (x, y): U → Rm−p × Rp are coordinate functions for which the leaves of ℱ are given by y1 constant,…,yp constant, in U. Clearly, on the overlap of two such leaf charts (U, (x, y)) and (U′, (x′, y′)) we have a coordinate transformation of the form

where and Bi are constants, we shall say that ℱ is a transversally affine foliation. This notion is, in a sense, dual to that of affine foliation, see [2], in which x′ is affine in x and each leaf has an induced flat affine structure.

Let be the complex linear space of all infinitely differentiable functions φ on the interval J = (a,b)(− ∞ ≦ a < 0 < b ≦ + ∞) such that φ(k)(0) = 0 for all non-negative integers k. Krabbe ([2], [3]) has defined a class of generalized functions on Jas an algebra ℳ of linear operators on and has developed an operational calculus for these operators. Shultz ([6], Theorem 2.18) has recently shown that ℳ is isomorphic to , where (resp. ) is the set of all distributions on J whose supports are contained in J+ = [0, b) (J- = (a,0]). In this paper we combine some of the ideas developed in [4] with results established in an earlier paper by Shultz to give an easier proof of the above result. Our methods also give a more direct proof of the main result (Theorem 1.22) of [2].

Both of these problems seem to be difficult.

In this paper we show that the (p+l)st homotopy group of the p-spun trefoil knot is nontrivial. This result was obtained for p = 1 in [1] using duality arguments. Here we take a totally different approach via the algorithm given in [3] and a module representation giving a simpler and more natural argument.

The purpose of this paper is to exhibit various Q-algebras (quotients of uniform algebras) which are Jacobson radical. We begin by noting easy examples of nilpotent Q-algebras and Q-algebras with dense nil radical. Then we describe two ways of constructing semiprime, Jacobson radical Q-algebras. The first is by directly constructing a uniform algebra and an ideal. This produces a nasty Q-algebra as the quotient of a nice uniform algebra (in the sense that it is a maximal ideal of R(X) for some X ⊆ ℂ). The second way is by using results of Craw and Varopoulos to show that certain weighted sequence algebras are Q-algebras. In fact we show that a weighted sequence algebra is Q if the weights satisfy (i) w(n+1)/w(n)↓0 and (ii) (w(n+l)/w(n))∊lp for some p≧ 1, but may be non-Q if either (i) or (ii) fails. This second method produces nice Q-algebras which are quotients of rather horrid uniform algebras as constructed by Craw's Lemma.

It has long been known that there is a strong connection between the class numbers of quadratic fields and the distribution of quadratic residues. This connection is exemplified, for instance, by the class number formulae of Dirichlet, which have formed the basis of much of the work on the subject of class numbers.

This note establishes two statements from R. M. Fossum's review [1] of a paper by E. A. Magarian [2]. Firstly, if A → B is a pure homomorphism (of commutative rings) then A[[x1,…,xs]] → B[[x1,…, xs]] is pure. Secondly, if Rn → R is a directed family of pure homomorphisms then ∪ Rn → R is pure. A consequence is that if Rn → R is a directed family of pure homomorphisms and if R is Noetherian, then ∪ Rn[[x1,…,xs]]is Noetherian.

In a recent paper [1], Jones extended the definition of the convolution of distributions so that further convolutions could be defined. The convolution w1*w2 of two distributions w1 and w2 was defined as the limit ofithe sequence {wln*w2n}, provided the limit w exists in the sense that

The object of this paper is to prove that the only non-trivial solution in positive integers of the equation of the title is X = 3, Y = 4.

By an E-unitary inverse semigroup we mean an inverse semigroup in which the semilattice is a unitary subset. Such semigroups, elsewhere called ‘proper’ or ‘reduced’ inverse semigroups, have been the object of much recent study. Free inverse semigroups form a subclass of particular interest.

An important structure theorem for E-unitary inverse semigroups has been obtained by McAlister [4, 5]. From a triple (G, ) consisting of a group G, a partially ordered set and a subset , satisfying certain conditions, he constructs an E-unitary inverse semigroup P(G, ). A semigroup of this type is called a P-semigroup. The structure theorem states that every E-unitary inverse semigroup is, to within isomorphism, of this form. A second theorem asserts that every inverse semigroup is isomorphic to a quotient of a Psemigroup by an idempotent-separating congruence. We refer below to these results as McAlister's Theorems A and B respectively. A triple (C, ) of the type used to construct a P-semigroup is here termed a “McAlister triple”. It is shown further, in [5], that there is essentially only one such triple corresponding to a given E-unitary inverse semigroup.
