The northern mountain range of schistose rocks of the Island of Trinidad reaches an altitude of 3,012 feet in Mount Tucutche and consists of a wild and tumbled mass of ridges with deep intervening valleys clothed from top to bottom with tropical vegetation, the abode of a practically undisturbed fauna and flora. Westwards the range is continued in the rugged and precipitous islands of Monos, Huevos, and Chacacare between which are the Bocas through which ships pass in entering the Gulf of Paria from the north. The entrance to the Gulf is famous for its scenic beauty. North-eastwards the schist-range reappears in the island of Tobago, but no limestones are reported to occur among the rocks there. Westwards the high range of schistose mountains continues along the northern coast of a great part of Venezuela,4 and over 800 miles further west at Santa Marta in the Kepublic of Colombia I have seen a series of schists very similar in lithology to those that form the northern range of Trinidad.

The more important points in connexion with the structure of D. flabelliforme are:—

1. The absence of any real approach to the spiral arrangement of the thecae along the stipes.1

2. The absence of a common canal; and the consequent budding of each hydrotheca direct from the preceding one.1

3. The initial constriction of each hydrotheca cavity.

4. The budding of the bithecae from the sides of the hydrothecae along which they lie.

5. The early stage at which the presence of the bithecae is observed.

6. The derivation, indifferently “right-handed” or “left-handed” of the crossing canal.

7. The nature of the dissepiments—hollow bars derived principally as outgrowths of the bithecae.

Chloritoid-Bearing schists have so far not been recorded from the State of South Australia, though such are known from the Pre-Cambrian rocks of the Broken Hill area. The chloritoid rocks now to be shortly described occur interbedded with quartzites, forming the meridional ridge of the “Frenchman”, on the western coast of southern Eyre Peninsula. In a previous paper (l)1 the rocks of this area have been referred to, as comprised within two groups, a sedimentary series—the Warrow series, and the Dutton series, a group of acid granites of gneissic habit with associated aplites and pegmatites, often rich in tourmaline and carrying garnet, and beryl. These rocks invade the sediments of the Warrow series.

The limestone hills of the Kinta Valley, standing up with white cliff faces from an almost level plain, form a prominent and picturesque feature of this prolific tinfield, and attract attention and present a varying scene as viewed from different points in the valley of the Kinta River. Their mode of origin has been the subject of marked divergence of opinion amongst geologists acquainted with them, as has also their age in relation to the series of metamorphic sediments found in the same valley.

At the Bournemouth meeting of the British Association in 1919, Dr. J. W. Evans, in his characteristically stimulating address to Section C, pleaded for the closer examination of sediments by geologists in the field. He instanced especially the presence of rhythmic banding on a small scale in sediments of widely varying ages as a phenomenon badly in need of further study. Engaged in field work on the oil-bearing Tertiary rocks of Burma, the writer has been struck by the repeated occurrence of rhythmic banding in those beds. The present note embodies the firstfruits of the detailed examination of the banding.

A valuable monograph on “The Glacial Geology of the North-West of Ireland” (Proc. R. Irish Acad., xxxvi, 1924, pp. 174–314, pls. 8 and 9) by Professor J. K. Charlesworth describes the complex glacial phenomena of Tyrone. He endorses the main conclusion of my paper on the Irish Bskers (Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc., 1920, vol. 210, pp. 115–51) that they are usually deposited along the margin of a glacier, and are not due to subglacial rivers. The two works further agree in their rejection of the long advocated theory that Irish glaciation was dominated by a huge dome of ice which accumulated as snow above the Central Plain and over-rode the surrounding mountains. That view, due to Hull (Physic. Geol. and Geogr. Ireland, 1878, p. 228), has in later years been advocated, amongst others, by Mr. T. Hallissy (Proc. R. Irish Acad., xxxi, part 7, 1914, p. 9), and also by him in association with the late Professor Cole (Handb. Reg. Geol, Ireland, 1924, p. 46; Cole, ibid., British Isles, 1916, p. 328). The lines of ice movement marked on my map (op. cit., 1920, p. 143) illustrating the distribution of the Irish eskers are fundamentally inconsistent with the traditional theory; I am therefore glad to find that theory emphatically rejected by Professor Charlesworth. He adduces convincing evidence that the ice was formed on the mountains and flowed from them on to the plains. In two minor questions Professor Charlesworth differs from the views of my paper. I remarked (op. cit., p. 133) that the eskers of Tyrone are “different in several respects” from those of the Central Plain. I did not state the differences as I mentioned the Tyrone eskers only in reference to the subglacial formation of eskers; and as they gave no support to that process, I briefly referred to them as having had the same marginal origin as the typical eskers of the Central Plain.

The fossil which forms the subject of this note was thought, when first found by me, to be a new genus of Tabulate corals. Since it may puzzle, and indeed has puzzled, others in a similar manner, it will perhaps prove useful to describe it.

In the course of detailed mapping over this area, with a view to throwing some light on the complicated geological structure of the district, the discovery of various graptolites, largely from new localities, both confirms and extends the previous records of Dr. C. A. Matley and Mr. W. Keeping.

A geological survey of the Pre-Cambrian area of South-Western Lleyn and of some of the Ordovician country to the east of it was made by the present writer between the years 1909 and 1912. An account of the geology of Bardsey Island was published in 1913, but ten years' absence abroad has delayed the description of the rocks of the adjacent mainland. A further absence from Europe will cause additional delay in the presentment of a full account of the district, and it seems desirable that some of the more important results of the survey of this tract of ground should now be placed on record.

In his paper on “The Yellow Limestone of Jamaica and its Mollusca” (Geological Magazine, Vol. LX, 1923, p. 345) Dr. C. T. Trechmann referred to an Upper Senonian fauna from shales at Providence, near Port Antonio, underlying a limestone with Rudistae. He recorded Baculites from the upper portion of these shales, and “rather low in the sequence” he collected some ammonites, one of which had been identified by the writer as belonging to the genus Parapachydiscus. The Shales at Providence had already been mentioned by the late Mr. Lucas Barrett1 as containing Baculites and Hamites, and in his collection, now in the British Museum (Natural History), there are preserved a number of fossils including the Pholadomya and Trigonia he recorded and two fragments of Hamites. The matrix of these is the same as that of Dr. Trechmann's examples, namely a brown calcareous sandstone, and the ‘Hamites’ in both collections belong to the same species, but Mr. Lucas Barrett's Baculites I have not been able to trace.

The paper by Dr. B. Smith, recently published in the Geological magazine, has drawn attention to the interesting relations of the Coniston Limestone Series in the Coniston District.

Since Dr. J. M. Clarke's1 attempt in 1890 to subdivide the Acidaspidae (= Odontopleuridae) by means of the characters of the occipital ring and its spines, several other methods of classification of the members of this family have been proposed. Van Ingen,2 in 1901, adopted Clarke's names for the subgenera which he raised to the rank of genera, but he slightly modified their definitions and preferred to use the name Acidaspidae for the family, as is general in Europe, dividing it into four main groups comprising six genera. Raymond,3 in 1916, was led to criticize Clarke's principle of classification, pointing out the unnatural association of species which resulted from its application, and he accordingly desired to alter the definitions of the genera as given in 1913 in the second edition of Zittel-Eastman's “Textbook of Palaeontology ” (vol. i, p. 722). Special attention was paid to the characters of the pleurae, as in Barrande's old scheme.

The three species of corals which form the subject of this communication are all from the Lower Lias of the west and centre of England. They were originally described by Duncan3 as species of Montlivaltia, viz. M. rugosa, M. mucronata, and M. victoriae. But in 1890 it was suggested by Freeh4 that many of the so-called Montlivaltia and Thecosmilia from the English Lias should be included in the genus Stylophyllopsis, established by him in that year for certain Triassic corals which possessed in their septal structure, and in other features of lesser importance, characters sufficiently distinctive to justify their separation from Montlivaltia. Owing, however, to the absence from Duncan's monograph of satisfactory representations of transverse and longitudinal sections, the generic determination of the English forms remained in every case uncertain.

Pygidium elongated, sublanceolate, bluntly pointed posteriorly. Lateral lobes flattened, horizontal, composed of three pairs of pleurae and a median postaxial piece. Axis short, conical, convex, tapering rather rapidly to blunt tip, less than one-third the length of the pygidium and about one-third its width, subcarinate posteriorly, faintly marked off from postaxial piece by weak circumscribing furrow; furnished at anterior end with one strong narrow complete ring, marked off by strong furrow, followed by weaker second ring defined by faint complete furrow, and with traces of a third incomplete ring; posterior two-thirds of axis devoid of annulations. Postaxial piece long, narrow, widening somewhat posteriorly, descending gradually to level of lateral lobes from tip of axis and becoming flattened but distinctly carinated for its whole length. First lateral pleura strongly falcate, bending back suddenly at fulcrum where it is widest and thence narrowing rather slowly to acutely pointed free tip projecting backwards beyond margin; pleural furrow submedian, diagonal, parallel to posterior edge of pleura, running nearly to tip. Second lateral pleura elongate, sublanceolate with tip bent back slightly and projecting freely beyond margin as short recurved point; pleural furrow median, slightly diagonal, not reaching tip. Third lateral pleura sublanceolate, broader than second pleura, incompletely marked off from postaxial piece posteriorly, the bounding furrow not quite reaching the margin but curving gently outwards at its end; tip of pleura undefined and not projecting beyond margin; pleural furrow median, slightly wavy, running nearly straight back parallel to its fellow, curving inwards a little at its end but not clearly connected with bounding furrow. All pleural and interpleural furrows of equal strength. Posterior lateral margins of pygidium behind tips of second pleurae forming nearly half its length and describing a long simple slight curve on each side, uniting behind in a blunt point at about 60°, the median carina of the postaxial piece extending to its tip.

During the course of work on the Pliocene deposits of West Cornwall, the writer had occasion to search a wide area forspecimens of that increasingly rare but fascinating rock, the Wolf Rock phonolite. Inquiries were mainly confined to the most likely places for securing such material, apart from the rock itself, i.e. at the cottages of fishermen accustomed to work among the dangerous reefs off Lands End and the Scilly Isles. Although personal efforts to find such specimens provedby no means abortive, it was ultimately through the good offices of the Honorary Secretary and Curator of the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall, Mr. J. B. Cornish, that excellent specimens of the Wolf Rock phonolite, Longships schist, and Seven Stones porphyry were obtained from a local inhabitant, who apparently had an eye for novelties to adorn his domestic mantelpiece.

In previous papers1 the assemblages characteristic of the systems lime-magnesia-silica, and magnesia-alumina-silica, in thermal metamorphism have been described, special reference being made to the range of mineralogical associates of rhombic pyroxene.

From the foregoing notes it is evident that there exists in this part of the Kukuruku District an igneous series showing the familiar veining, banding, and mingling of rocks of increasingly acid composition, and also a group of completely altered sediments.

For some years Dr. W. F. Hume had desired to obtain additional analyses of Egyptian igneous and metamorphic rocks for the purpose of a detailed investigation he proposed to make of their nature and distribution. The Chemical Department of the Egyptian Government was, however, too fully occupied on current work for Government contracts, and could not undertake the specialized analytical work necessary.
