A diverse assemblage of Carboniferous plant fossils occurs in the upper Benxi Formation at the Kaihuagou Section near Taiyuan, Shanxi, China. It consists of impressions and fusain fragments, the latter revealing anatomical details. Unlike previously published assemblages from the Benxi Formation, there are no pteridosperms, but a predominance of noeggerathioids and fern fragments. There are three new species: Achlamydocarpon taiyuanensis, Conchophyllum suboblongifolium, and the first reported example of a Selaginella from the Carboniferous System of China, S. benxiensis. The arborescent lycophytes do not to belong to Lepidodendron, as previously claimed, but to Synchysidendron, and three new combinations are therefore proposed for species from the Benxi Formation: S. galeatum, S. subrhombicum and S. tripunctatum. The Benxi Formation flora represents a transition between the tropical swamp vegetation represented in the Westphalian floras of Europe and North America, and the Stephanian and Permian Cathaysian floras of China. It is evidence of an essential continuity between the Late Palaeozoic vegetation of the western and eastern tropics, which should be united as a single phytochorion, the Amerosinian Realm.

The Lake Ambrose volcanic belt (LAVB) outcrops as a 45 km long northeast-trending belt of mafic and felsic volcanic rocks along the eastern side of the Victoria Lake Group in south-central Newfoundland. It comprises roughly equal proportions of mafic pillow basalt and high silica rhyolite, locally interbedded with epiclastic turbidites. Volcanic rocks have been metamorphosed in the greenschist facies and are extensively carbonatized.

U-Pb (zircon) dates from rhyolite at two, widely separated localities give identical ages of 513 ± 2 Ma (Upper Cambrian), and this is interpreted as the eruptive age of the volcanic sequence. Primitive arc and low-K tholeiites can be recognized on the basis of major and trace element geochemistry, ranging from LREE-depleted to LREE-enriched. Geochemical variation between mafic volcanic types is interpreted predominantly to reflect contrasts in source characteristics and degree of partial melting; some variation within each geochemical type attributable to fractional crystallization can be recognized. Detailed examination of some samples indicates that the heavy REE and related elements have locally been mobile, probably as a result of carbonate complexing.

The LAVB is the oldest well-dated island arc sequence in Newfoundland, and perhaps in the Appalachian–Caledonian Orogen. Its age requires modification of widely held models for the tectonic history of central Newfoundland. It is older than the oldest known ophiolite, demonstrating that arc volcanism was extant before the generation of the oldest known oceanic crust in this part of Iapetus. It further demonstrates that there was a maximum of approximately 30 Ma between the rift-drift transition which initiated Iapetus, and the initiation of subduction. This suggests that the oceanic sequences preserved in Newfoundland represent a series of arcs and back arc basins marginal to the main Iapetus Ocean, and brings into question whether the Appalachian accreted terranes contain any remnants of normal mid-ocean ridge type Iapetan crust.

A sharp negative δ13C excursion coincides with the end-Triassic mass extinction. This is followed by a protracted interval of 13C enrichment. These isotopic events occurred simultaneously with the emplacement of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP). Here we use a carbon cycle box model to explore the effects of episodic carbon release – constrained by recently developed high-resolution chronology – on atmospheric pCO2, ocean chemistry and the δ13C of the ocean–atmosphere carbon pool. Our results are consistent with previous modelling efforts in suggesting that the sharp negative δ13C excursion and acidification event associated with the extinction are best explained by the rapid release (<20 ka) of highly 13C-depleted carbon (−70‰). However, our model also indicates that the likely short duration of the excursion requires organic carbon burial to have closely followed carbon injection. The age within the Hettangian of the large positive δ13C excursion which follows is currently uncertain. If early Hettangian in age, then our modelling indicates that the interval of 13C enrichment was closely associated with the volcanic CO2 pulses and pCO2 peaks. If late Hettangian in age, then the 13C enrichment must have lagged the carbon input substantially (by hundreds of thousands of years) and was associated with CO2 drawdown and over-cooling. Our modelling highlights the need for improved age constraints on Hettangian stratigraphic sections in order to test between two distinct and contrasting possibilities: continuing carbon cycle instability due to recurrent perturbations from CAMP activity or a delayed recovery arising from internal biosphere dynamics.

Comparison of Old Red Sandstone palaeomagnetism for NW Scotland and Norway lead to the hypothesis of a 200–300 km sinistral movement along the Great Glen Fault. The displacement is thought to be of late Caledonian (late Devonian) age. The new palaeogeographic reconstruction of Northern Britain (prior to late Caledonian times) seems to have interesting geological implications.

In the evolution of the Scottish Dalradian basin, the climax of widespread tholeiitic magmatism pre-dated or coincided with major basement faulting and the onset of deep marine sedimentation in Lower Cambrian times. Earlier basin-deepening and precursory igneous activity had already occurred. Major and trace element chemistry of low-grade metabasites indicates their affinity with basalts from ocean-spreading centres, or transition to ‘within-plate’ types. Geological evidence favours a tectonic setting for this igneous suite and the Highland Border Series on the NW margin of an actively evolving Lower Cambrian ocean basin, possibly a marginal basin to the Iapetus Ocean System.

The Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ) is the boundary between ancient Precambrian lithosphere of the East European Craton (EEC) and the younger lithosphere beneath the latest Neoproterozoic–Palaeozoic mobile belts of western Europe. The former is characterized by a thick crust (c. 45 km), low heat flow and a tectono-thermal age of about 3000 to 800 Ma, the latter by a thinner crust (c. 30 km), higher heat flow and a tectonothermal age of 560 to 290 Ma. These contrasting types of crust were juxtaposed during the Caledonian and Variscan orogenic episodes. The crystalline basement of the TESZ is largely concealed by sedimentary basins controlled by the reactivation of structures within the suture zone during Permian–Mesozoic extension and Cenozoic inversion. The pre-Permian evolution of the craton and the mobile belts, and the location of the sutures, is inferred from isolated outcrops, hundreds of boreholes and geophysical evidence. Existing seismic data demonstrates that the TESZ is rather narrow and has an expression at all levels of the lithosphere and deep into the asthenosphere. Teleseismic studies have demonstrated that the differences in the velocity structure of the asthenospheric and lithospheric mantle across the TESZ persist to depths of c. 400 km (Zielhus & Nolet, 1994).

One of the few and most complete records of the MDICE (Middle Darriwilian Isotope Carbon Excursion) is herein documented from Baltoscandia. Based on a core section penetrating the condensed Lower–Middle Ordovician succession (~46 m) on the island of Öland, southeastern Sweden, we provide an integrated scheme for carbon isotope chemostratigraphy (313 samples) and conodont biostratigraphy (29 samples) for this period. The carbonate succession in the Tingskullen core records 12 conodont zones and 6 subzones, including the Oepikodus evae, Trapezognathus diprion, Baltoniodus triangularis, B. navis, B. norrlandicus, Lenodus antivariabilis, L. variabilis, Yangtzeplacognathus crassus, Eoplacognathus pseudoplanus (Microzarkodina hagetiana and Microzarkodina ozarkodella subzones), E. suecicus, Pygodus serra (E. foliaceus, E. reclinatus, E. robustus and E. lindstroemi subzones) and Pygodus anserinus zones in ascending order. The δ13Ccarb record reveals an apparently complete record of the MDICE, including a rising limb, a well-defined peak and a falling limb. The anomaly covers a thickness of c. 27 m in the core and spans the Eoplacognathus pseudoplanus, E. suecicus, Pygodus serra and P. anserinus conodont zones. Combined with the new, detailed conodont biostratigraphy, the MDICE in the Tingskullen core can be used for detailed correlation with successions from Baltica, North America, the Argentine Precordillera, South China and North China.

The Kainella and Leiostegium zones of the Quebrada del Toro are the equivalent of the Late Ozarkian of Western North America.

The fauna of the arenaceous-calcareous beds of the marine-glacial deposits of the Saladillo group is not characteristic enough to enable an exact determination of the age. Nevertheless, from the stratigraphical position of these beds, they could be considered as indicating Upper Beekmantown age.

The lower part of the Parcha group, with the single determinable fossil Basilicoides taurinus gen. et sp. nov. has been provisionally referred to the Llandeilian.

The faunule of the Asaphellus zone of the Quebrada de Chalala shows affinities with part of the Tremadocian of England, the Tomkolian of South Chosen, and the upper zones of the “ Ceratopygeregion ” of Scandinavia.

The stratigraphical relationship between the Kainella and Leiostegium zones of the pre-Puna and the Asaphellus zone of Purmamarca is not known.

The Flagstone Bench Formation ranges in age from earliest Triassic to Norian (Late Triassic) and is exposed in the Beaver Lake area of the northern Prince Charles Mountains. This sandstone-dominated formation rests conformably on the Bainmedart Coal Measures and represents the upper part of the Permian–Triassic Amery Group. It is divisible into three members: the Ritchie, Jetty and McKelvey members (in ascending order). Nine sedimentary facies assignable to three facies associations (major channel, crevasse/fan and flood-basin deposits) are recognized within the formation. Ritchie Member sedimentation took place during a transition from consistently hygric to seasonally dry conditions and the unit comprises sandstone-dominated, sheet-like channel deposits interspersed with few, thin, mottled, haematite-rich flood-basin siltstones. Deposition took place under fluctuating discharge conditions chiefly within the channel tracts of axially (northwesterly/northeasterly) flowing, low-sinuosity braided rivers. The Jetty Member shows a gross upward-fining profile dominated in the lower part by poorly sorted pebbly sandstones and in the upper part by ferruginous mudcracked siltstones, mottled palaeosols, calcrete and thin massive sandstone sheets. This unit reflects deposition of easterly directed alluvial fans and extensive flood-basin silt under a semi-arid climatic regime. The Upper Triassic sandstone-dominated McKelvey Member shows a return to axial drainage along the Lambert Graben with sedimentation occurring primarily within low-sinuosity braided channel tracts under wetter climatic conditions.

The extent of elemental mobility during lower greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphism of a uniform turbidite suite (Greenland Group, New Zealand) has been evaluated using data for major elements and 19 trace elements. Simple comparison of average compositions at 2 wt % Al2O3 intervals in the data suites shows little contrast between lower greenschist protolith and upper greenschist and amphibolite facies equivalents, except for enrichment of CaO and Sr, and loss of Ba and Rb, particularly in the sandier end members. Division into psammitic and pelitic suites using TiO2/Al2O3 and Zr/Al2O3 ratios allows delineation of individual residual enrichment models on Ti-reference element plots, and both lithotypes can be used to assess potential elemental mobility. These plots show that a large number of elements (Ti, Al, Fe, Mg, Ce, Cr, Ga, La, Nb, Ni, Sc, Th, V, Zn and Zr) constitute immobile reference species, with abundances equal to their equivalent lithotype in the protolith, and little mass loss or residual enrichment. K and Rb also largely conform to the residual model, but in the amphibolite facies some exchange between pelite and psammite may occur. A number of elements show enrichment (Mn, Cu, Pb, U, Na, P) or depletion (Y) in a small number of samples, but the significance of these contrasts is questionable due to relatively large variation in the protolith. In contrast, Ca and Sr show progressive and marked enrichment with increasing grade, and Ba and As are clearly depleted in amphibolite facies psammites. In the amphibolite facies some Si may have been lost by psammites, and gained by the pelites, although there has been no mass change from the suite as a whole. A large part of the Ca and Sr enrichment in the amphibolite facies can be accounted for by metasomatic homogenization of calcareous concretions which occur in the lower grade protolith. The metamorphism of the Greenland Group is thus considered to be essentially isochemical.

The stratigraphy of the Siktefjellet and Red Bay groups of northwestern Spitsbergen is revised in the light of new fieldwork. An early Early Devonian (Lochkovian) age is indicated by the rich fossil vertebrate faunas of the Red Bay Group. The underlying Siktefjellet Group is likely to be Late Silurian in age, although there is no direct fossil evidence of this. The most abundant sediment type in the two groups is fine-grained fluvial sandstone, although conglomerates and lacustrine siltstones also occur. The conglomerates that predominate in the lowest parts of both groups imply the presence of fault scarps at the surface. There has been much debate about the importance of strike-slip faulting in the area, particularly in relation to the major north–south trending Raudfjorden and Breibogen faults. Between these faults, the Biskayerhuken–Holtedahlfonna terrane contains a zone for which the deliberately genetic name ‘Siktefjellet Strike-slip Zone’ is proposed. This zone is characterized by evidence for a succession of events that, taken together, suggest a history of continuing, repeated strike-slip. These events were: (1) the tectonism and metamorphism of the basement (Krossfjorden Group) and the emplacement of the high-grade Richarddalen Complex, (2) development of crush zones in the basement, (3) deposition of the Siktefjellet Group in two distinct basins (perhaps of pull-apart origin), (4) deposition of the Red Bay Group (first as discrete scarp-related conglomerates, and then as part of a more stable fluvial basin), (5) localized compressional deformation of the Siktefjellet and Red Bay groups.

We describe the stratigraphical/sedimentological and structural evolution of the Manyara Rift in the Tanzania Divergence Zone, East Africa. The rift-related Manyara Beds on the shoaling side of the Manyara Rift were deposited between <1.7 and 0.4 Ma and can be separated into a lacustrine lower member and a fluvial upper member. The transition from lacustrine to fluvial sedimentation at ∼ 0.7 Ma appears to be related to a southward shift of major rift faulting. Fault geometry and the kinematics of the faults are consistent with major faulting during NE/E-directed extension. There is also evidence for other extensional directions including radial extension, which might be caused by magmatic activity and/or might reflect oblate strain symmetry where the East African Rift propagated into the Archaean Tanzania Craton and associated termination of rifting caused an increase in the strained area.

A distinct spatial relationship between surface faulting, magmatic intrusions and volcanic activity exists in the Aegean continental crust. In this paper, we provide detailed structural observations from key onshore areas, as well as compilations of lineament maps and earthquake locations with focal plane solutions from offshore areas to support such a relationship. Although pluton emplacement was associated with low-angle extensional detachments, the NNE- to NE-trending strike-slip faults also played an important role in localizing the Middle Miocene plutonism, providing ready pathways to deeper magma batches, and controlling the late-stage emplacement and deformation of granites in the upper crust. Additionally, the linear arrangements of volcanic centres, from the Quaternary volcanoes along the active South Aegean Volcanic Arc, are controlled primarily by NE-trending faults and secondarily by NW-trending faults. These volcanic features are located at several extensional settings, which are associated with the main NE-trending faults, such as (i) in the extensional steps or relay zones between strike-slip and oblique-normal fault segments, (ii) at the overlap zones between oblique-normal faults associated with an extensional strike-slip duplex and (iii) at the tip zone of a NE-trending divergent dextral strike-slip zone. The NE trend of volcano-tectonic features, such as volcanic cone alignments, concentration of eruptive centres, hydrothermal activity and fractures, indicates the significant role of tectonics in controlling fluid and magma pathways in the Aegean upper crust. Furthermore, microseismicity and focal mechanisms of earthquakes in the area confirm the activity and present kinematics of these NE- trending faults.

The Moine thrust zone of southern Assynt forms part of the northwest margin of the Caledonide belt and has aroused controversy concerning amounts and timing of thrust displacement and sequence of thrust development. Recent mapping shows it to have been a foreland propagating thrust sequence; the uppermost ductile Moine thrust formed first, followed by sequences of imbricates, a major thrust (the Ben More thrust) and then several lower duplex zones. This sequence is clear from new observations that many of the earlier thrusts were folded and/or breached during the development of the underlying structures. A displacement of over 54 km has been estimated for the zone as a whole. An alkaline igneous complex, including the large Borrolan syenite, was intruded during the development of the thrust zone and much of it was carried some 30 km to the west-northwest onto the foreland. Late extensional structures in southern Assynt are an integral part of the Caledonide thrust sequence and probably developed from the collapse of the thrust wedge as it climbed from stronger basement rocks on to a weaker cover sequence on the foreland.

The first Mesozoic beds in the western Atlas (Morocco) are the Triassic redformations of the Argana valley. The present study was carried out in order to determine the tectonic pattern, especially in the lowermost formations, related to the rifting of the Central Atlantic and to the creation of the Atlas trough. The main results are: (1) from the stratigraphic point of view, the lowermost formation (the Ikakern Formation) is probably of early Triassic age; (2) the sediments of this formation were deposited in an ENE–WSW trending basin affected by northward-tilted blocks delimited by almost pure normal faults; (3) this basin, whose trend was oblique to the younger Atlantic rift, represents a failed branch of the Atlas trough; (4) the “Atlantic stage” corresponds to the creation of a NNE-SSW trending basin superimposed on the first, and the sediments were, in this area, tilted to the west by a major end-Triassic extensional event, just before the extrusion of the basalts.

An examination of existing definitions of facies and subfacies boundaries in pelitic rocks suggests that some alteration is necessary to emphasize two important reactions:

3 Staurolite + 2 Quartz ⇌ Almandine + 5 Al2SiO5 + 3 Water, and

Muscovite + Quartz ⇌ Potash feldspar + Al2SiO5 + Water A generalized plot shows possible relations between the curves of these two reactions and the inversion, curves of the aluminosilicates within the P-T field of metamorphism. The curves of further reactions commonly used to define facies and subfacies boundaries have been schematically added to this plot, and trends of metamorphism in various areas are indicated thereon. P-T curves of dehydration reactions such as the above will vary according to the chemical potential of the water vapour in each particular case. Observations suggest, however, that the curves are not very differently placed from one regional metamorphic terrain to another. That is, the rate of escape of volatiles is broadly similar in the metamorphism of many of these terrains.

The area covered by this paper embraces the northern end of the Pennines—the uplands of Lower Carboniferous rocks centred about Alston, together with the low ground of the Tyne-Irthing gap to the north. It is bounded on the west by the Vale of Eden. The Pennine portion is separated structurally from the regions to the north and west by the Stublick and Pennine Faults respectively. The former trends E.N.E., it has a downthrow to the north and has resulted in the preservation of the string of Coal Measures outliers which form a connecting link between the Cumberland and Northumberland coalfields. The Pennine Fault, trending S.S.E., with a throw of several thousand feet to the west, brings the New Red rocks of the Vale of Eden against the Lower Carboniferous beds of the Pennine Escarpment. These two faults meet at right angles near Castle Carrock. To the south the Pennine Fault dies out near Stainmore, and another dislocation, the Dent Fault, trending S.S.W., develops, and eventually links up with the Craven Faults which have an E.S.E. trend. These four faults, as pointed out by Professor Kendall, have the form of a reversed 3, and the region within this figure has become known generally as the Northumbrian Fault Block. Professor Marr has aptly termed the southern half of this area the “Rigid Block”. The northern half of the Northumbrian Fault Block, which will be shown to possess many characters in common with the southern half, is here called the “Aiston Block”. Its limits are defined on three sides—by the Stublick Fault on the north, the Pennine Fault on the west, and by the Stainmore depression on the south. The last thus divides the Northumbrian Fault Block into two, physiographically and structurally. The eastern boundary of the Alston Block is concealed beneath the Mesozoic rocks.

Plant microspores and megaspores are used to correlate the separate occurrences of the English Wealden with the marine Lower Cretaceous of Lincolnshire and with a Netherlands succession. The paper is a preliminary statement on the representation of the Continental stages in the English Wealden.

Sedimentary structures in the lowest sub-division of the Torridonian of Skye are described and figured. Trough cross-stratification of the type known as festoon bedding is widely developed in the coarser grits. Finer-grained sandstones show curly-bedding structures due to post-depositional disturbances. Siltstones and mudstones are characterized by a fine lamination and by such structures as ripple-marks, minute graded bedding and desiccation cracks. The orientation of cross-laminae in the festoon-bedded grits indicates that the currents depositing these rocks flowed towards the north-east or east.

The Eastern Ghats granulite belt of India has traditionally been described as a Proterozoic mobile belt, with probable Archaean protoliths. However, recent findings suggest that synkinematic development of granulites took place in a compressional tectonic regime and that granulite facies metamorphism resulted from crustal thickening. The field, petrological and geochemical studies of a charnockite massif of tonalitic to trondhjemitic composition, and associated rocks, document granulite facies metamorphism and dehydration partial melting of basic rocks at lower crustal depths, with garnet granulite residues exposed as cognate xenoliths within the charnockite massif. The melting and generation of the charnockite suite under granulite facies conditions have been dated c. 3.0 Ga by Sm–Nd and Rb–Sr whole rock systematics and Pb–Pb zircon dating. Sm–Nd model dates between 3.4 and 3.5 Ga and negative epsilon values provide evidence of early Archaean continental crust in this high-grade terrain.
