The flying wing is an aerodynamic configuration with high efficiency, but the lack of lateral-directional stability has always been an obstacle that limits its application. In this study, the wing rock motion of a 65° swept flying-wing aircraft is studied via wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations at a low speed, and various unsteady motion phenomena are focused on. Both the experimental and numerical results show that the flying wing has a bicyclic ${C_l}$–$\phi $ hysteresis loop during its wing rock, different from the slender delta wing, rectangular wing, generic aircraft configuration, etc., which have a tricyclic hysteresis loop. This form of hysteresis loop implies a different energy exchange manner of the flying wing in the wing rock oscillation. Further analysis shows that the flying wing forms a unilateral leading-edge vortex (LEV) under a high roll angle, with its wing rock oscillation driven by the ‘vortex–shear-layer’ structure, which is different from that of slender and non-slender delta wings. Moreover, the quantitative dynamic hysteresis characteristics of the LEV's strength and location for the flying wing and the slender delta wing are also different. These results have proven the existence of a wing rock mode which is different from previous investigations, which enriches the understanding of self-induced oscillation. Present discoveries are also conducive to the aerodynamic shape design and flight manipulation of a flying-wing aircraft, which is significant for its wider application.

Supersonic rectangular twin jets (SRTJ) are of interest for current and future generations of tactical aircraft. However, the adverse effects of screech-loop coupling have previously been documented to significantly increase the near-field (NF) pressure fluctuations. These high-amplitude pressure fluctuations have the potential to fatigue and damage nearby aft components of the aircraft. Previous studies have documented that the NF pressure fluctuation level depends on the coupling of the jets: in-phase coupling along the twin jets’ minor axes produces stronger NF pressure fluctuations than that of out-of-phase coupling. The objective of this work is to further investigate the effects of coupling modes on NF pressure fluctuations in SRTJ and to mitigate the adverse effects of coupling using active flow control. Localized arc filament plasma actuators are employed to alter the SRTJs’ coupling mode by leveraging natural flow instabilities with minimal power input. A NF microphone array is used for simultaneous coupling and NF pressure fluctuation measurements. Schlieren imaging and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition are used to assess the effects of control on the flow field. The effect of excitation at various frequencies and actuation patterns on coupling and NF pressure fluctuations in different flow regimes are explored and discussed.

Shallowly submerged oscillating structures may be found in wave energy devices or semi-submersible vessels. Predicting the force on such structures is critical for design purposes, but complicated due to nonlinear phenomena which can occur in shallow water, including wave breaking and bore formation. Such effects are particularly important around the first ‘resonance’ frequency of the fluid on top of the device, where linear theory predicts large flows on/off the cylinder and corresponding surface elevations and forces. In an effort to create a reliable and efficient model to predict the hydrodynamic force on a shallowly submerged truncated vertical cylinder, an axisymmetric nonlinear hybrid model is developed for forced heave oscillations. The flow above the cylinder is modelled using the nonlinear shallow water equations, and linear potential flow theory is used in the surrounding fluid. The model is compared with experimental results for forced heave oscillations and performs well for predicting the heave force. It is then used to examine linearised heave force for increasing amplitudes of (prescribed) harmonic heave motion. There is a significant reduction in the peaks of radiation damping and added mass coefficients with increasing amplitude, and associated shifts in the frequencies of the peaks.

Marine debris pollution is a growing problem impacting aquatic ecosystems, coastal recreation and human society. Beaches are known to be a sink for debris, and beaching needs to be accounted for in marine debris mass balances, but the process of buoyant debris beaching is not yet sufficiently well understood in order for it to be included in coastal models. We develop a simplified model for buoyant marine debris transport in bore-driven swash (where swash refers to the area that the water wets the beach with each incoming wave). We validate the model with laboratory experiments and use the combined results from the model and experiments to understand the parameters that are important for dictating particle beaching. The most relevant parameters are the particle inertia and the initial conditions with which debris particles enter the swash zone.

Martian dust storms in the planetary boundary layer share many qualitative similarities to terrestrial sandstorms. Both of these turbulence-driven, particle-laden boundary layer flows are known to generate electric fields due to the transport of differentially charged particles; this charge separation can be strong enough to lead to dielectric breakdown in the form of sparks or lightning. Using wall-modelled large-eddy simulations supplemented with conservation of equations for the charged particle transport, representative simulations of neutrally stable Martian and terrestrial particle-laden boundary layer flows are compared. The simulations, albeit canonical in nature, provide evidence to support previous observations of the less frequent occurrence of lightning on Mars but a higher occurrence of localised electric discharge events due to the much lower breakdown potential. The rarefied Martian atmosphere impedes charged particle transport, resulting in a weaker electric field than the equivalent terrestrial sandstorm. The lower drag force in the rarefied Martian atmosphere means that the electrostatic force plays a more significant role in the particle transport, which results in a self-regulation of the electric field. The strongest Martian dust storms show evidence of significant breakdown events and these discharge events only occur very close to the ground despite the very large boundary layer on Mars.

We review the progress on the applications of the vortex-surface field (VSF). The VSF isosurface is a vortex surface consisting of vortex lines. Based on the generalized Helmholtz theorem, the VSF isosurfaces of the same threshold at different times have strong coherence. As a general flow diagnostic tool for studying vortex evolution, the numerical VSF solution is first constructed in a given flow field by solving a pseudo-transport equation driven by the instantaneous frozen vorticity, and then the VSF evolution is calculated by the two-time method. From the database of numerical simulations or experiments, the VSF can elucidate mechanisms in the flows with essential vortex dynamics, such as isotropic turbulence, wall flow transition, flow past a flapping plate and turbulence–flame interaction. The characterization of VSFs reveals the correlation between robust statistical features and the critical quantities needed to be predicted in engineering applications, such as the friction coefficient in transition, thrust in bio-propulsion and growth rate in interface instability. Since the VSF evolution captures the essential Lagrangian-based dynamics of vortical flows, it inspires novel numerical methods on cutting-edge hardware, e.g. graphic and quantum processors.

Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is applied to three-dimensional (3-D) velocity fields collected from large-eddy simulations (LES) of a baffled stirred tank. In the LES, the tank operates with a Rushton-type impeller under turbulent conditions (at least in the near-impeller region) and the working fluid exhibits either Newtonian or shear-thinning rheology. The most energetic POD modes are analysed, and a POD reconstruction based on the higher modes is proposed to approximate the fluctuating component of the velocity field. Subsequently, the POD reconstruction is used to identify vortical structures and characterise them in terms of their shape. The structures are identified by considering a frame-invariant formulation of a popular, Eulerian, local-region-type method: the $Q$-criterion. Statistics of shape-related parameters are then investigated to address the morphology of the structures. It is found that: (i) regardless of the working fluid rheology, it seems feasible to decompose the 3-D field into its mean, most energetic periodic and fluctuating components using POD, allowing, for instance, reduced-order modelling of the energetic periodic motions for mixing enhancement purposes, and (ii) vortical structures related to turbulence are mostly tubular. Finding (ii) implies that, as starting point, phenomenological models for the interaction between fluid particles (drops and bubbles) and vortices should consider the latter as cylindrical structures rather than of spherical shape, as classically assumed in these models.

Fish often swim in crystallized group formations (schooling) and orient themselves against the incoming flow (rheotaxis). At the intersection of these two phenomena, we investigate the emergence of unique schooling patterns through passive hydrodynamic mechanisms in a fish pair, the simplest subsystem of a school. First, we develop a fluid dynamics-based mathematical model for the positions and orientations of two fish swimming against a flow in an infinite channel, modelling the effect of the self-propelling motion of each fish as a point-dipole. The resulting system of equations is studied to gain an understanding of the properties of the dynamical system, its equilibria and their stability. The system is found to have five types of equilibria, out of which only upstream swimming in in-line and staggered formations can be stable. A stable near-wall configuration is observed only in limiting cases. It is shown that the stability of these equilibria depends on the flow curvature and streamwise interfish distance, below critical values of which, the system may not have a stable equilibrium. The study reveals that simply through passive fluid dynamics, in the absence of any other feedback/sensing, we can justify rheotaxis and the existence of stable in-line and staggered schooling configurations.

The unsteady flow behaviour of two side-by-side rotors in ground proximity is experimentally investigated. The rotors induce a velocity distribution interacting with the ground causing the radial expansion of the rotor wakes. In between the rotors, an interaction of the two wakes takes place, resulting in an upward flow similar to a fountain. Two types of flow topologies are examined and correspond to two different stand-off heights between the rotors and the ground: the first one where the height of the fountain remains below the rotor disks, and a second one where it emerges above, being re-ingested. The fountain unsteadiness is shown to increase when re-ingestion takes place, determining a location switch from one rotor disk to the other, multiple times during acquisition. Consequently, variable inflow conditions are imposed on each of the two rotors. The fountain dynamics is observed at a frequency that is about two orders of magnitude lower than the blade passing frequency. The dominant characteristic time scale is linked to the flow recirculation path, relating this to system parameters of thrust and ground stand-off height. The flow field is analysed using proper orthogonal decomposition, in which coupled modes are identified. Results from the modal analysis are used to formulate a simple dynamic flow model of the re-ingestion switching cycle.

To accurately calculate the turbulent exchange coefficient, the contribution of multi-scale turbulent transportation needs to be considered, especially in the complex terrain of the coastal area. In September 2019, a comprehensive observation experiment on the offshore atmospheric boundary layer was carried out at the Yangmeikeng Ecological Monitoring Station and Sai Chung Gulf. Through scale decomposition, it is shown that the turbulent motion in the atmospheric boundary layer in the coastal area is affected by the underlying surface, such as that of the coastal land or the sea–land boundary. This is the main reason behind the phenomenon whereby different scales make different contributions to momentum flux. Different multi-scale characteristics of turbulent structures on the underlying surface affect the drag coefficient. Through wavelet transform and finite element method, the characteristics of the multi-scale flow structures produced by the complicated offshore terrain are analysed. It is found that large-scale flow structures enhance the pulsating intensity at the small scale, but the large-scale coherence characteristics are different from those at the small scale. In summary, in comparing these three sites, the flux exchange on the roof is greatest, followed by that on the tower. In the Gulf, the flux exchange is mainly dependent on small-scale structures, which are linked with the smallest values.

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) are considered to be a promising technology for achieving skin-friction drag reduction. Development of more efficient techniques for simulating the turbulent boundary layer on SHSs continues to be a subject of interest. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to capture near-wall behaviours due to the effect of the SHS on wall-bounded flows. To achieve this, high- to intermediate-fidelity turbulence models including Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes, detached eddy simulation and large eddy simulation were utilized. With regard to slip conditions, the well-known Navier slip velocity method was used over the SHS. For validating the numerical solutions, the slip velocity and skin friction over the SHS were compared with the experimental output. Results showed that the velocity profile and Reynolds stresses on the SHS were comparable to the reported results. Then, the developed models were further extended to investigate the drag reduction effect of SHSs with rectangular grooves. The subsequent results showed that the combination of superhydrophobicity and rectangular grooves led to a better performance with a maximum drag reduction of 46.1%. This is due to the surface slip caused by the SHS and the secondary vortex effect created by the grooves. Our results revealed that Reynolds stresses of the slippery grooved surface were higher than those of the case in which a shear-free condition was employed for the grooved surface. More importantly, the numerical results indicate the previous assumption of the shear-free condition is inaccurate for the geometrically simplified grooved SHSs. Therefore, geometry modifications rather than an overly simplified shear-free boundary condition should be applied in computational fluid dynamics simulations for SHSs with grooves or other complex structures.

In submerged sandy slopes, soil is frequently eroded as a combination of two main mechanisms: breaching, which refers to the retrogressive failure of a steep slope forming a turbidity current, and instantaneous sliding wedges, known as shear failure, that also contribute to shape the morphology of the soil deposit. Although there are several modes of failures, in this paper we investigate breaching and shear failures of granular columns using the two-fluid approach. The numerical model is first applied to simulate small-scale granular column collapses (Rondon et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 23, 2011, 073301) with different initial volume fractions to study the role of the initial conditions in the main flow dynamics. For loosely packed granular columns, the porous medium initially contracts and the resulting positive pore pressure leads to a rapid collapse. Whereas in initially dense-packing columns, the porous medium dilates and negative pore pressure is generated stabilizing the granular column, which results in a slow collapse. The proposed numerical approach shows good agreement with the experimental data in terms of morphology and excess of pore pressure. Numerical results are extended to a large-scale application (Weij, doctoral dissertation, 2020, Delft University of Technology; Alhaddad et al., J. Mar. Sci. Eng., vol. 11, 2023, 560) known as the breaching process. This phenomenon may occur naturally at coasts or on dykes and levees in rivers but it can also be triggered by humans during dredging operations. The results indicate that the two-phase flow model correctly predicts the dilative behaviour and the subsequent turbidity currents associated with the breaching process.

Developed in this paper is a theoretical description of the fluid flow involved in contactless transport systems that operate using squeeze-film levitation. Regular perturbation methods are employed to solve the appropriate Reynolds equation that governs the viscous, compressible flow of air in the slender film separating the oscillator and the levitated object. The resulting reduced formulation allows efficient computation of the time-averaged levitation force and moment induced by fluid pressure, as well as the accompanying quasistatic thrust force that accounts additionally for shear stresses. Investigated, in particular, is the possibility of combining two distinct methods of thrust generation that have been experimentally demonstrated in previous studies – (i) inclination of the levitated body and (ii) generation of asymmetrical flexural deformations, such as travelling waves, on the oscillator surface – the latter of which is shown to allow a transition from the typically repulsive levitation force to one that is attractive. Computations reveal that systematic control of the inclination angle can provide significant performance benefits for squeeze-film transport systems. In the case of attractive levitation, the amount of improvement that can be obtained appears to correlate closely with the degree of lateral asymmetry exhibited by the flexural oscillations.

Cohesive particulate flows play an important role in environmental fluid dynamics, as well as in a wide variety of civil and process engineering applications. However, the scaling laws, constitutive equations and continuum field descriptions governing such flows are currently less well understood than for their non-cohesive counterparts. Grain-resolved simulations represent an essential tool for addressing this shortcoming, along with theoretical investigations, laboratory experiments and field studies. Here we provide a tutorial introduction to simulations of fine-grained sediments in viscous fluids, along with an overview of some representative insights that this approach has yielded to date. After a brief review of the key physical concepts governing van der Waals forces as the main cohesive effect for subaqueous sediment suspensions, we discuss their incorporation into particle-resolved simulations based on the immersed boundary method. We subsequently describe simulations of cohesive particles in several model turbulent flows, which demonstrate the emergence of a statistical equilibrium between the growth and break-up of aggregates. As a next step, we review the influence of cohesive forces on the settling behaviour of dense suspensions, before moving on to submerged granular collapses. Throughout the article, we highlight open research questions in the field of cohesive particulate flows whose investigation may benefit from grain-resolved simulations.

Microfluidic mixers offer new possibilities for the study of fast reaction kinetics down to the microsecond time scale, and methods such as soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy are powerful analysis techniques. These systems impose challenging constraints on mixing time scales, sample volume, detection region size and component materials. The current work presents a novel micromixer and jet device which aims to address these limitations. The system uses a so-called ‘theta’ mixer consisting of two sintered and fused glass capillaries. Sample and carrier fluids are injected separately into the inlets of the adjacent capillaries. At the downstream end, the two streams exit two micron-scale adjoining nozzles and form a single free-standing jet. The flow-rate difference between the two streams results in the rapid acceleration and lamination of the sample stream. This creates a small transverse dimension and induces diffusive mixing of the sample and carrier stream solutions within a time scale of 0.9 microseconds. The reaction occurs at or very near a free surface so that reactants and products are more directly accessible to interrogation using soft X-ray. We use a simple diffusion model and quantitative measurements of fluorescence quenching (of fluorescein with potassium iodide) to characterize the mixing dynamics across flow-rate ratios.

Locomoting organisms often carry loads such as captured prey or young. Load-carrying effects on high-Reynolds-number flight have been studied, but the fluid dynamics of load carrying by low-Reynolds-number microorganisms has not. We studied low-Reynolds-number load carrying using unicellular choanoflagellates, which wave a flagellum to swim and create a water current transporting bacterial prey to a food-capturing collar of microvilli. A regularized Stokeslet framework was used to model the hydrodynamics of a swimming choanoflagellate with bacterial prey on its collar. Both the model and microvideography of choanoflagellates showed that swimming speed decreases as number of prey being carried increases. Flux of water into the capture zone is reduced by bacteria on the collar, which redirect the water flow and occlude parts of the collar. Feeding efficiency (prey captured per work to produce the feeding current) is decreased more by large prey, prey in the plane of flagellar beating and prey near microvillar tips than by prey in other locations. Some choanoflagellates can attach themselves to surfaces. We found that the reduction in flux due to bacterial prey on the collars of these attached thecate cells was similar to the reduction in flux for swimmers.

Ionic fluids subjected to externally applied electric fields experience Joule heating, which increases with the increased electric field and ionic conductivity of the medium. Temperature gradients induced by Joule heating can create buoyancy-driven flows produced by local density changes, as well as electrothermal transport due to the temperature-dependent variations in fluid permittivity and conductivity. This manuscript considers Joule heating-induced transport in microchannels by a pair of electrodes under alternating current electric fields. Resulting buoyancy-driven and alternating current electrothermal (ACET) flows are investigated theoretically, numerically and experimentally. Proper normalizations of the governing equations led to the ratio of the electrothermal and buoyancy velocities, as a new non-dimensional parameter, which enabled the construction of a phase diagram that can predict the dominance of ACET and buoyancy-driven flows as a function of the channel size and electric field. Numerical results were used to verify the phase diagram in various height microchannels for different ionic conductivity fluids and electric fields, while the numerical results were validated using the micro-particle-image velocimetry technique. The results show that ACET flow prevails when the channel dimensions are small, and the electric potentials are high, whereas buoyancy-driven flow becomes dominant for larger channel heights. The present study brings insights into Joule heating-induced transport phenomena in microfluidic devices and provides a pathway for the design and utilization of ACET-based devices by properly considering the co-occurring buoyancy-driven flow.

The importance of buoyancy relative to free-stream flow is described using an adapted Froude number $Fr' = U/f_0^{1/3}$, where $U$ is the flow speed and $f_0$ is the exhaust buoyancy flux per unit length. We varied $Fr'$ by changing the free-stream flow rate, the exhaust flow rate and the buoyancy of the exhaust. We have experimentally identified two flow regimes, depending on the value of $Fr'$. For high $Fr'$ (low buoyancy), dispersion is driven by inertial forces in the wake and the amount of a pollutant in the wake is independent of $Fr'$. For moderate $Fr'$, a wall plume develops up the back of the step, directly feeding the pollutant into the shear layer, but without altering the shape of the wake. This wall plume reduces the amount of pollutant trapped behind the step. We developed an analytic model to describe the quantity of pollutant trapped behind the step. The model predicts the transition from buoyancy being negligible to being the dominant transport mechanism within the wake. We have hypothesised and observed some evidence of a third regime at low $Fr'$, when the buoyancy is sufficient to distort the macrostructure of the shear layer and wake.

Predicting the laminar to turbulent transition is an important aspect of computational fluid dynamics because of its impact on skin friction. Traditional transition prediction methods such as local stability theory or the parabolized stability equation method do not allow for the consideration of strongly non-parallel boundary layer flows, as in the presence of surface defects (bumps, steps, gaps, etc.). A neural network approach, based on an extensive database of two-dimensional incompressible boundary layer stability studies in the presence of gap-like surface defects, is used. These studies consist of linearized Navier–Stokes calculations and provide information on the effect of surface irregularity geometry and aerodynamic conditions on the transition to turbulence. The physical and geometrical parameters characterizing the defect and the flow are then provided to a neural network whose outputs inform about the effect of a given gap on the transition through the ${\rm \Delta} N$ method (where N represents the amplification of the boundary layer instabilities).

The present paper simplifies the naturally formed dunes (riverbeds) as large-scale three-dimensional staggered wavy walls to investigate the features of the accompanying secondary flows and streamwise vortices via large-eddy simulation. A comparison between the swirling strength and the mean velocities suggests where a secondary flow induces upwash or downwash motions. Moreover, we propose a pseudo-convex wall mechanism to interpret the directionality of the secondary flow. The centrifugal instability criterion is then used to reveal the generation of the streamwise vortices. Based on these analytical results, we found that the streamwise vortices are generated in the separation and reattachment points on both characteristic longitudinal–vertical and horizontal cross-sections, which is related to the curvature effect of the turbulent shear layer. Furthermore, the maximum Görtler number characterized by the ratio of centrifugal to viscous effects suggests that, for fixed ratio of spanwise- to streamwise-wavelength cases, the strongest centrifugal instability occurring on the longitudinal–vertical cross-section gradually dominates with the increases in amplitude. A similar trend for the cases with varied spanwise wavelength can also be found. It is also found that the streamwise vortices are generated more readily via transverse flow around the crest near the separation and reattachment points when the ratio of spanwise- to streamwise-wavelength equals 1.
