The growth and nitrogen yield of Stylosanthes guyanensis undersown with upland rice were negatively related to level of urea application at Khon Kaen, north-east Thailand. In the absence of applied urea the nitrogen yield of rice monoculture was 3·3 gm./m.2 whilst the addition of stylo increased nitrogen yield of the association to 9·6 gm./m.2 Stylo was initially dominated by rice but exploited environmental growth factors more effectively in the latter part of the growing season, accentuating competition for water and phosphorus. Simultaneous stylo and rice sowing reduced rice grain yield by 12 per cent, the greatest reduction occurring at a low level of urea application, mainly due to abortion of spikelets after panicle exsertion.

The introduction of forage or hay crops into fallow land represents a means of increasing feed supplies for small ruminants in north Africa and west Asia. Such fallows lie between zones planted with food crops and traditional grazing areas. Mixtures of vetch with barley, oats or triticale, and peas with barley, were cut at the 10% flowering, 100% flowering (100F) and full pod (FP) stages of the legume component. Effects of crop maturity, weather conditions and cutting height on yield, the chemical composition of the standing crop and re-growth were measured. Barley–vetch mixtures yielded 8147 kg dry matter ha−1 of standing crop at the FP stage in 1983 but only 2283 kg dry matter ha−1 in 1984 under drought conditions. Hay yields were 4377 and 1640 kg dry matter ha−1, respectively. The highest yielding mixture, grown in 1983, was oat–vetch which yielded 8670 kg dry matter ha−1 of standing crop and 4285 kg dry matter ha−1 of hay at the FP stage. Cutting at the 100F or FP stage maximized dry matter yield and minimized the risk of rainfall prolonging hay making. Rain caused slight damage to some hays cut at early stages of maturity. Voluntary intakes and digestibilities of field-cured hays were determined. The voluntary intakes of triticale–vetch hay at the FP stage and all barley–pea hays were low compared with other hays. Hays contained sufficient estimated metabolizable energy (ME) for use in sheep diets during pregnancy and middle or late lactation. ME values averaged 9.2 megajoules per kg dry matter in both 1983 and 1984.

Intercropping is a common practice in Africa, but the advantage compared to sole cropping depends on the crop plants and local agro-ecological conditions. The potential of intercropping maize (Zea mays) or sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) with watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) was tested in two on-farm trials in southern Mozambique under semi-arid conditions in an area with low and unpredictable rainfall. In the first experiment, plant density, yield and monetary value of sole and intercropping plots of maize with watermelon were determined in 17 farmers' fields in an area where all crops developed to maturity and harvest. There was a significant reduction in yield of both maize (28.8%) and watermelon (57.8%) in the intercrop compared with the sole crop yields. However, the mean land equivalent ratio of 1.13 for yield showed that intercropping had advantages as, on average, an area planted with sole crops would require 13% more land than an intercrop production to generate the same outcome. In the second experiment, carried out in another area with 16 farmers' fields, drought was more pronounced and only watermelon developed to maturity. Intercroppings with maize and sorghum resulted in 70% and 69% yield reduction, respectively. In conclusion, watermelon is a good companion crop for intercropping with cereals to mitigate the risk of total crop failure due to drought.

Prevention of the enormous losses of crop production in the Third World, both before and after harvest, would make a substantial contribution to the survival and well-being of countless small fanners. Many attempts to reduce the scale of pest attacks by facilitating the purchase of pesticides and fertilizers have failed in the face of maladministration, mistrust, primitive conditions and ignorance. Yet, despite the difficulties, these fanners have evolved a pattern and practice of production which incorporates many positive attributes which have only recently been appreciated by western scientists. Attention is drawn to some of these methods and also to the benefits and limitations of both classical and manipulated biological control. It is concluded that further improvements depend on the ability of entomologists to adapt some of the concepts widely used in China to utilize scientific techniques within a socio-economic structure where even the plastic bag must be regarded as high technology.

ANOVA, one of the most common statistical methods applied in agronomy, offers a variety of results we can report when analyzing designed experiments. The focus, of course, is on treatment means, but what should we report to characterize precision? Should we choose treatment standard deviations (SDs) or standard errors of the mean or standard errors of the difference (SEDs)? We discuss why treatment raw SDs should not be reported as the result of ANOVA, and point out that most of the time it is SEDs that should be provided.

Over a decade after the forest-savanna transition zone of Nigeria was deemed suitable for production of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), no research has been undertaken on the crop's tillage requirements in the southeastern part of the zone. This study evaluated the effects of tillage-mulch practices on soil moisture, water use (WU), grain yield and water use efficiency (WUE) of the crop in a Typic Paleustult (sandy loam) at Nsukka during 2006 and 2007 growing seasons. In a split-plot design, no-till (NT) and conventional tillage (CT) treatments were left bare (B) or covered with mulch (M) at 5 Mg ha−1. The ensuing treatments (NTB, NTM, CTB, and CTM) represented four tillage methods, which were replicated four times in a randomized complete block. In the monitored root zone, NTB and CTM significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced the soil moisture status over NTM and CTB, but the main effects of the tillage and the mulch factors were not significant. The crop WU was uninfluenced by the treatments throughout the study. Although the grain yield showed higher values with NT than with CT, the differences were significant (p ≤ 0.05) only in 2007 that was marked with erratic rainfall and relatively low mean yield. Mulch significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced the grain yield in 2006, with greater effect in CT than NT. On average, the mulch plots out-yielded their bare counterparts by about 26%. The tillage × mulch interaction was significant (p ≤ 0.01), and showed higher grain yields in NTB, NTM and CTM than in CTB. In the year-weighted average, yield increments in NTB, NTM and CTM over CTB were 53, 53 and 67% respectively, a pointer to the relevance of mulch with the CT but not the NT. Relative WU showed that the crop's water demand was met under all treatments. Hence, the yield reduction in the CTB was not due to water shortage. The WUE varied among the treatments in the same pattern as grain yield. In summary, NTB and CTM proved superior to NTM only in soil moisture status but to CTB in all measured parameters. From a socio-economic viewpoint, however, NTB would be preferable to CTM for growing sorghum in this area.

The response of wheat to the application of different rates of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) under balanced fertilization on different soil types and agroecologies has not been well studied in Ethiopia. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (1) determine soil-specific responses of wheat to N, P, K, and S under balanced fertilization; (2) quantify agroecology-specific N, P, K, and S response of wheat under balanced fertilization; and (3) determine nutrient use efficiency of wheat on different soil types under balanced fertilization. Trials were conducted on farmers’ fields across 24 locations covering 4 soil types and 5 agroecological zones (AEZs) from 2013 to 2017. The mean grain yields of wheat significantly varied with applied N and P fertilizer rates with soil types and AEZs. With balanced application of other nutrients, the optimum N rates for wheat were 138 kg N ha−1 on Cambisols and Luvisols, 92 kg N ha−1 on Vertisols, and 176 kg N ha−1 on Nitisols, while the optimum P rate was 20 kg P ha−1 on Cambisols and Vertisols. The nutrient dose–response curve did not reveal consistent pattern for K and S applications on all soil types. The agronomic efficiency of wheat decreased with increasing rates N and P on all soil types. The highest agronomic efficiency of N (15.8 kg grain kg−1 applied N) was recorded with application of 92 kg N ha−1 on Vertisols, while the highest agronomic efficiency of P (49 kg grain kg−1 applied P) was achieved with application of 10 kg P ha−1 on Cambisols. We conclude that applications of 92–138 kg N ha−1, 20 kg P ha−1, 18 kg K ha−1, and 10 kg S ha−1 under balanced application of zinc and boron could be recommended depending on soil type for wheat production in the study areas.

This study analyses the factors affecting tea productivity in Northeast India using a combined statistical and modelling approach. The effects of a number of genotypic, environmental and management factors on tea yield are quantified and modelled, using a three-year (2007–2009) field trial in Assam, Northeast India. Simulations of the potential tea yield are obtained using the Cranfield University Plantation Productivity Analysis (CUPPA) Tea model to find out how well the predicted and observed values for tea production match. This combined approach shows that plantation age has a significant negative (R2 = 0.77) effect on tea yield. Monthly rainfall had a significant positive effect on monthly yields (R2 = 0.43). Rainfall was more strongly associated with tea yield when rainfall in month x was related to the tea yield in month x + 1 (R2 = 0.49). When repeating the analysis for a hypothetical situation that the fields are fully planted, the correlation between monthly rainfall in month x and tea yield for month x + 1 increases (R2 = 0.58). Adjusted yields show a higher correlation than actual yields. The results obtained show a close correspondence between predicted and observed yields, indicating that the model could be used on contrasting soil types, genotypes and also on daily, weekly and monthly weather data. It can be further calibrated and validated for Northeast Indian conditions if more required input parameters are collected in a series of plantations. Tea research might benefit from developing new versions of the CUPPA Tea model for the major clonal tea cultivars, with a more flexible module for fertiliser application as is currently the case.

A method of estimating crop production potential was devised and tested in a number of contrasting solar radiation climates. With increasing levels of solar radiation, total dry matter yields of kale, maize and sugar beet increased, whilst energy conversion efficiency declined in kale and sugar beet but increased in maize. Maximum potential crop yields in almost all environments were achieved with a conversion efficiency of approximately 2 per cent of total radiant energy.

To quantify the effect of thermal stress and photothermal quotient (PTQ) on yield components, eleven years experimental data of three cultivars (HD-2285, K-8804 and K-9107) under three sowing dates at Kanpur centre were analysed. Number of grains per ear (NG), grain weight per ear (GW) and 1000-grain weight (TG) were identified as prime yield contributing components in HD-2285, K-8804 and K-9107, respectively. GW was highly sensitive to maximum temperature (MXT) while NG was sensitive to minimum temperature (MNT) during jointing (JNT) to anthesis (ATS) as well as the total growing season in all the cultivars. In both HD-2285 and K-8804, optimum MXT and MNT during JNT to ATS are 22.7–24.6 and 7.0–7.9 °C, respectively for obtaining maximum NG. Optimum MXT for GW ranged from 15.8–17.3 °C during tillering (TLR) to JNT stage in K-8804 and K-9107 while it was 20.4 °C during JNT to ATS stage in HD-2285. MXT, MNT and PTQ of 23.6 °C, 9.2 °C and 25 MJ/m2/day/ °C, respectively during JNT to ATS in K-9107 were found optimum for higher TG.

Tubers of Dioscorea alata L. cv White Lisbon, affected by Internal Brown Spot (IBS) disease, and stored under ambient conditions on wooden or wire racks, did not show significant increases in IBS incidence and mean lesions over storage periods of up to 18 weeks. Storage under different conditions of temperature (13, 20 and 28 ± 3°C) did not have any significant effect on IBS incidence; but tubers stored under conditions of high relative humidity (95 ± 2%) showed less IBS and greater mean lesion diameters. Although a significant reduction in disease incidence occurred during storage under the latter conditions, the effects of increased lesion size resulted in some deterioration of tuber quality.

Leaves of Coffea arabica L. were sampled from an artificial shade trial to examine the effects of two levels of shade, compared with full exposure, on size, structure and chlorophyll content. A grid was designed for the rapid measurement of leaf areas in the field, and individual leaf areas were found to increase progressively with shading. Since dry weight per leaf was not affected, an increase in specific leaf area was entailed. Leaf size varied greatly with season of formation, a wider range occurring in selection N39 than KP162, but the reasons for the variation were not clear. Neither lamina thickness nor proportion of palisade tissue varied with shade treatment. Chlorophyll per unit weight increased with shade in KP162 but with N39 was only greater under dense shade. Chlorophyll per unit area did not alter with shade, but N39 had significantly more chlorophyll than KP162 on both a weight and an area basis.

Wheat was planted at different altitudes in the Ethiopian highlands. Increased altitude led to a lower neutral detergent fibre (NDF) content and a higher in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of the leaf blades, leaf sheaths and stems. The varieties tested did not differ in NDF content, however, because of the improved NDF digestibility of all three straw fractions. The semi-dwarf varieties had a higher IVOMD than the standard tall wheats. The local durum wheat variety showed a much higher sodium content and a more favourable Na:K ratio. Undersowing with an equal mixture of Trifolium ruepellianum (Fres.) and Trifolium steudneri (Schwf.) led to a small reduction in straw yield but increased the crude protein content of the crop residues from 2.3 to 7.1% and the IVOMD from 44 to 51% as compared to the sole wheat stand.

Reducing the leaf areas of different maize hybrids at the time of female flowering resulted in a reduction of up to 70–90 g/plant of grain yield, with a parallel deterioration in the health of the stalk pith (due to infection by Fusarium sp.) and an increase in lodging. However, beyond a certain limit defoliation caused a loss in fertilization and a further decline in grain yield, which was accompanied by an improvement in the health of the pith and less lodging. There were considerable differences in the reactions of six genotypes to the defoliation treatments.

Sorghum landraces from contrasting districts of northern Nigeria were grown during the 1990 rainy season to describe their physiological and morphological features. Changes in their dry matter production and yield could be predicted from thermal time to flowering (based on response to a fixed daylength) and partitioning indices. Many other morphological and physiological features, such as light-extinction coefficient, light-use efficiency, plant height, leaf area and leaf number, were either stable or varied systematically with time to flowering. Grain yields of early maturing lines were limited by low light interception from flowering to physiological maturity and those of later maturing lines by highly site-specific drought stress.

Studies on the effect of nanofertilizers (NF) in physiological performance of plants is scarce, especially that related to substances encapsulated into silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles in cocoa plants. The effect of foliar application of SiO2-NF on nutrient contents, gas exchange, photochemical activity, photosynthetic pigments, total soluble protein (TSP), photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), and growth in seedlings of two cocoa clones (OC-61 and BR-05) in a greenhouse was assessed. Spraying with SiO2-NF increased net photosynthetic rate (A) by 16 and 60% and electron transport rate (J) by 52 and 162% in clones OC-61 and BR-05, respectively, without changes in photosynthetic pigment concentration in either clone. The SiO2-NF caused a decrease of 37 and 22% in stomatal conductance in OC-61 and BR-05, respectively; a similar trend was observed in transpiration rate, causing an increase of 42 and 100% in water use efficiency in OC-61 and BR-05, respectively. In both clones, diameter of graft increased on average 28% with SiO2-NF. Higher photosynthetic capacity was related to an increase in leaf N, P, and TSP. A significant reduction in PNUE (A/N ratio) was found in OC-61, whereas in BR-05 PNUE increased after spraying with SiO2-NF. Overall, spraying with SiO2-NF had a positive effect on photosynthetic processes in both cocoa clones, associated with an increase in nutrients content, which translated into improved growth. A differential physiological response to spraying with SiO2-NF between clones was also found, with BR-05 being the clone with a better physiological response during the establishment and development stages.

Instruments and techniques are reviewed for measuring the content and potential of water in the soil, the water potential and solute potential of plant tissue, and the diffusive resistance of leaves. Emphasis is placed on difficulties encountered in the field and in the interpretation of measurements. References are given to recent technical papers and reviews dealing with the principles and construction of individual instruments.

The discrepancy between farmers' performances and research-based recommendations in the control of cotton pests in Southern Malawi is discussed. Analysis of the former in two seasons revealed that the farmers' low levels of insecticide application approached the economic optimum, whereas several factors of economic importance were omitted from the research-based justification of high spraying levels. Recommendations for improving the applicability of research recommendations to smallholder farming are made, with particular reference to the farming risks that arise from uncertain rainfall, the wide range of farming ability encountered in practice, and the dangers of atypically high levels of management in research experiments.

Institutional changes in Benin have brought to light farmers' demand for varieties better suited to local growing conditions than existing ones. In response, we initiated a participatory cotton breeding experiment in 1996 to evaluate the relevance of such a methodology for the improvement of a commercial crop grown under rain-fed, semi-intensive cropping systems. This paper compares the performance of the first four mass-selection cycles, implemented by three farmer-breeders (F-B) and one formal breeder, with the original population and two commercial controls over three sites and two years. First results show that genetic changes occurred in all the F-B populations. The highest yielding F-B population (Savalou) was also more exuberant and later maturing than the others. Within the relatively narrow range of environments considered in the trial, there is no evidence that decentralized breeding results in better local adaptation. In Benin, participatory cotton breeding may be considered as complementary to formal on-station breeding and useful for enlarging the genetic variability offered to the farmers. Although the farmers want the approach to be scaled-up, its sustainability relies on a formal partnership between research and farmers institutions.
