A reliable means to induce sprouting in dormant seed tubers of yams (Dioscorea species) is required to enhance flexibility in planting date and rate of propagation of the crop. Experiments were conducted to assess the potential of two gibberellin inhibitors, Uniconazole-P and Prohexadione-calcium, to induce sprouting in tubers from three varieties of D. rotundata and four of D. alata. Uniconazole-P and Prohexadione-calcium shortened the period of dormancy in tubers of some varieties. In others, they either had no effect or extended dormancy. The varietal responses were also influenced by whether the tubers were treated at harvest (before shoot senescence) or four weeks after harvest by which time shoots had senesced fully. Tubers stored in darkness at a constant temperature of 30 °C sprouted earlier but lost weight faster than did those stored under natural daylight and ambient temperature. The apparent slow action of Uniconazole-P and Prohexadione-calcium, and their variable effectiveness in relation to variety, would limit their usefulness in seed or breeding programmes, or in determining treatment timing and the best storage environment for the tubers after treatment.

The effects of winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) on a following crop of maize were assessed in two agroecological zones of Sri Lanka. Maize was grown after maize with variable rates of nitrogen fertilizer (0–150 kg N ha−1) or after winged bean or soyabean (Glytine max). Where it could be extrapolated from the nitrogen response curve, the apparent nitrogen contribution by winged bean was 70 kg N ha−1. However, in some cases maize after winged bean yielded more than the maximum yield predicted by the Mitscherlich N-response curve, suggesting the effect of some yield-enhancing mechanism in addition to nitrogen contribution. Where no fertilizer nitrogen was used, maize yields on land which had previously grown winged bean were 52–91% higher than those where maize was the previous crop. Winged bean proved to be an effective green manure crop even when all above-ground plant parts were harvested for food and fodder.

A field study was conducted in 1985 at two locations in Maryland, USA, to test the influence of environment (location), input level (N fertilization), management (component density combinations), and measure of performance on recommendations for a maize/soyabean intercrop. Location affected the degree of intercrop yield depression of each crop; the effect of N on relative competitive abilities; the maximum Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) and maximum modified Staple Land Equivalent Ratio (SLER); the difference between LER and SLER; the optimum density combinations and change in optima in response to N; and the N level at which the greatest land use efficiency was achieved. Given the complexity of the environmental effects, recommendations based on the trials have a very narrow range of applicability.

Regression models for the prediction of grain yields of non-irrigated winter wheat in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment were developed based on drought variability. Twenty-five years (1980–2004) of climate data and yield data from four soils (sandy loam, clay, clay loam and sandy clay loam soil) in northern Greece were used for this purpose. Two variables were selected as explanatory variables of the models: (a) the monthly precipitation versus the monthly reference evapotranspiration ratio (P/ETo), which describes the monthly drought and consequently the water deficit conditions during the wheat-growing season and (b) the mean observed yield (y) of each soil, which indirectly describes the intrinsic fertility of the soils. A resampling technique using subsets of the data (bootstrapping) was applied to estimate the coefficients of the models, to assess the uncertainty of the selected explanatory variables and to validate the models. The models showed adequate predictive ability of wheat yields, defining the time and intensity of drought effects. The most crucial period for winter wheat was found to be primarily the vegetative-reproductive stage period between late winter and mid-spring (i.e. February to April). Soil clay content was found to be the most representative parameter in describing most of the physico-chemical parameters and properties of the soils and consequently the mean yield, indicating that yield is non-linearly correlated with most soil properties. With the proposed models, yield gap (YG) predictions between two growing seasons of the selected soils presented 84% accuracy in all years in the identification of the correct signal (+ or −) of yield increase or decrease, respectively, and adequate performance in the prediction of the mean YG.

A factorial (3 × 3 × 3) experiment using three levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium was conducted to evaluate the effects of these elements on the formation of nodules. Results indicated that increasing levels of nitrogen depressed the formation of both effective and ineffective nodules, but phosphorus and potash did not produce any significant effects. Although the soils of the experimental plots were highly leached and strongly acid in nature, the native strains of rhizobia were able to produce copious amounts of effective nodules on plants growing on plots where no nitrogen was applied. It appeared that the naturally occurring rhizobia strains in these soils are well adapted to their natural environments.

Plants of rice (Oryza sativa)cultivar IR36 were grown under flooded and free-draining conditions at a constant air temperature of 28°C with an 11.5 h d−1 photoperiod in both a growth cabinet and a glasshouse. The nutrient solution within flooded pots was maintained at 20°, 24° or 28°C, or was not controlled. Rate of floral development was enhanced by warmer nutrient solution temperatures at the same air temperature; times to panicle emergence were reduced by an average of 17 d with increase in the nutrient solution temperature from 20° to 28°C. In comparable treatments, plants grown in the growth cabinet reached panicle emergence later than those grown in the glasshouse, possibly because mean air temperature was on average 0.8°C cooler in the growth cabinet. An independent model, derived from a previous investigation, provided a good prediction of the times from sowing to panicle emergence for plants grown in both the glasshouse and the growth cabinet when based on the mean of the temperatures of the nutrient solution and the air, showing that it is important to determine water/root temperature as well as air temperature when investigating the effect of environment on development of the rice plant.

We demonstrated experimentally that coconut husk ash is an excellent mineral fertilizer for immature coconut hybrids on developed peat, providing potassium (K) in particular. Coconut husk ash performed as well as potassium chloride (KCl) in a proportion of 2–2.5 to 1. At four years, 99% of coconut palms fertilized with husk ash, 92% of coconut palms fertilized with KCl and 26% of control palms were sexually differentiated. The cumulative yield in the first two harvesting years more than trebled between control palms (26 nuts per tree) and the palms fertilized with KCl (93 nuts per tree) or husk ash (105 nuts per tree). This is an important result, given the intensity of K deficiency and the increasing cost of imported fertilizers. Although coconut husk ash will never totally replace K fertilizer, it can recycle a substantial proportion of nutrients in a coconut plantation. It now remains to optimize its use on an estate level, by examining the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of its mass production and determining conditions for maximum efficiency.

Plectranthus edulis (syn. Coleus edulis) is a tuber-bearing labiate species cultivated in parts of southern Ethiopia. To learn about traditional cultural practices and their rationale, a survey was conducted among farmers from Chencha and Wolaita experienced in growing this crop. A pre-tested questionnaire was used to interview 48 family heads categorized into three wealth groups per site. Information was checked through group discussions and field observations. In Wolaita, poorer farmers cropped a larger portion of their land to P. edulis than richer farmers. Land was usually prepared for planting between January and April. In Wolaita, the crop was mostly grown in a furrow. In Chencha growing in patches and on flat land also occurred. Farmers mostly used a digging hoe for land preparation. Tuber pieces were planted about 5 cm deep. According to farmers, using tuber pieces resulted in more stems, more progeny tubers and higher yields than using whole tubers. Tubers were broken into pieces 0–1 day before planting. Tuber pieces were planted with sprouts or after desprouting. Crops were usually fertilized with manure, but in Wolaita sometimes also with compost. Applying fertilizer was thought to give more and bigger tubers. Earthing up took place 1–3 times (usually twice), to increase yield. Tipping was also done 1–3 times (usually once), to increase the number of stems. Based on the survey, an overview of the practices and their rationale is compiled for use in further research into this orphan crop.

The potential for using sorghum and millet crop residues as fodder was studied in southeastern Botswana. This region is characterized by low, unevenly distributed rainfall and shallow sandy soils. There were significant differences among cultivars for grain and stover yield, digestibility, crude protein, and mineral content, but no species advantage. Stover from all entries was adequate for cattle maintenance in in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and most of the minerals tested, but crude protein and phosphorus levels did not always meet the minimum requirement. The deficient phosphorus levels were compounded by high calcium levels. This mineral imbalance could lead to bone abnormalities and reduced fertility in livestock.

Cutting and carrying of mulch from established tree plots is an alternative to in situ mulch in agroforestry systems. Through the cut-and-carry method, the undesirable effects of tree-crop competition characterized by in situ mulching can be avoided. An economic evaluation of the cut-and-carry method of providing nutrients for maize production was carried out based on investigations in south-western Nigeria. The results showed that the use of mulch from multi-purpose trees (MPTs) through the cut-and-carry method contributed to higher maize grain yields than those obtained with fertilizer or in the untreated controls. However, because of high labour requirements and scarcity of land in the study area, providing nutrients for crop production by this method is unprofitable both in the short and the long term. This may serve as a constraint for the adoption of this technology by farmers. Alternative options requiring less labour and land requirements should be investigated in the quest to replace shifting cultivation.

The response of tomatoes to applied N, P and K was determined in six trials in the forest and savannah zones of Nigeria. In the savannah area, N was the most deficient nutrient, with an optimum level of 60 kg. N/ha., while P and K were required at lower rates of between 20–60 kg. P2O5 and K2O/ha. depending on initial soil nutrient status and moisture availability. In forest soils developed from sedimentary rocks, P requirement was high (120 kg. P2O5/ha.) and response to N was small, but K could be important on the well-drained soils in this area because of low K reserves (0·1 per cent total K) compared with soils from igneous rocks in the savannah with more than 0·6 per cent total K. The potential of the savannah for large-scale tomato production is discussed, as well as factors limiting yields in Western State of Nigeria.

Quality of animal manure as a nutrient source for crops and as a soil conditioner depends on how fast the organic matter is decomposed, releasing plant nutrients or building up the soil organic matter (SOM) pool. This turnover process is governed by manure composition, soil temperature, soil moisture and secondary metabolites in the manure such as tannins. To investigate the turnover and nutrient release from tannin-containing manure, a litterbag experiment was conducted in an irrigated lowland soil of northern Oman. A standardized quebracho tannin extract (QT) was either added to the goats’ diet and defecated with manure (QTf), or added to manure in a QT water suspension (QTc) prior to field application. Litterbags were installed within a two-year field experiment at 10-cm depth at the beginning of a consecutive sweet corn and radish cultivation, followed by their recovery every 2-–6 weeks until crop harvests. The litterbags contained pure goat manure (control) and the two types of QT-amended goat manure. Generally, QT increased OM remaining in litterbags at sampling by up to 22% compared with the control. QT reduced relative C, N, P and K release by 10% to 63% compared with the control, but effects were contradictory under sweet corn and radish. While under radish, both QT treatments reduced or tended to reduce C, N, P and K release from manure, QTc even increased N and P release under sweet corn. QTf, on the other hand, did not affect C, P and K release under sweet corn, whereas N release was reduced by 36–63% under both crops. As quebracho tannins in goat manure slowed down organic matter decomposition and reduced nutrient release, they may be useful agents in manure application to increase SOM pools and soil nutrient pools. However, the immobilization particularly of N by tannins can reduce the availability of this nutrient to crops.

The legume Arachis pintoi has a number of characteristics which enable it to make a valuable contribution to the development of sustainable and productive pastures in the tropics. It was introduced to Costa Rica for this reason, in 1987. The objective of this study was to analyse the adoption of A. pintoi as a forage legume in Huetar Norte, a region in the north of Costa Rica. The adoption process was analysed to identify the contributory factors and to make recommendations for measures which could be taken to promote the process. To collect the data, 115 randomly selected livestock holders and an additional 34 farmers known to have planted A. pintoi were interviewed. Farmers see improved pastures to be the most important technology to enhance forage and cattle production. It was confirmed that A. pintoi is a potential improved pasture alternative. Although A. pintoi was well known., the adoption rate was low. Lack of availability of seed, technical assistance and information about the use and management of A. pintoi hinder adoption. Difficulties in establishment and maintenance were also recorded.

A nutrient-balance model was used to investigate the nitrogen contributions of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) to pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) intercropping systems in semi-arid northern Namibia. Data on nitrogen fixation, production, crop nitrogen off-take and competition effects came from two seasons of fieldwork. Supplementary data were taken from secondary sources. The model was used as a tool to attempt to identify grain legume management options with the potential to make significant contributions to soil fertility. The crop parameters pearl millet grain yield, nitrogen fixation rates, nitrogen harvest index and biomass production were found to be critical in determining system nitrogen inputs and outputs as was the form of residue management. The model indicated that it is extremely difficult to manage grain legumes in dryland environments in ways that lead to consistent increases in pearl millet grain yields, measurable against season-to-season variation due to other factors. Several of the options for improved legume management conflict strongly with farmers' risk-avoidance strategies and their tendency to invest preferentially in off-farm activities in an environment where livelihoods have diversified considerably away from agriculture. Potential routes for increasing grain legume contributions to soil fertility in dryland areas are discussed.

Successful fruit set in coconut depends on several reproductive processes including pollen germination and pollen tube growth. High temperature (˃33 °C) during flowering reduces fruit set in coconut. Therefore, identification and development of coconut varieties or hybrids with high reproductive heat tolerance will benefit the coconut industry in view of the climate changes. This experiment was conducted to quantify the response of pollen germination and pollen tube growth of seven coconut hybrids to increasing temperature from 16 to 38 °C. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was carried out to classify coconut hybrids on the basis of their temperature tolerances to pollen germination. Pollen germination and pollen tube length of the hybrids ranged from 56 to 78% and 242 to 772 µm, respectively. A modified bilinear model best described the response to temperature of pollen germination and pollen tube length. Cardinal temperatures (Tmin, Topt and Tmax) of pollen germination and pollen tube length varied among the seven hybrids. PCA identified Tmax for pollen germination and Topt for pollen tube length as the most important parameters in describing varietal tolerance to high temperature. PCA also identified SLGD × Sri Lanka Tall and Sri Lanka Brown Dwarf × Sri Lanka Tall as the most tolerant hybrids to high temperature stress and Sri Lanka Tall × Sri Lanka Tall and Sri Lanka Green Dwarf × San Ramon as less tolerant ones based on cardinal temperatures for pollen germination and pollen tube length. Tmax for pollen germination of the most tolerant and less tolerant hybrids were 41.9 and 39.5 °C, respectively. Topt for pollen tube length in the most tolerant and less tolerant hybrids were 29.5 and 26.0 °C, respectively.

Single-leaf net photosynthesis versus light response curves of four Hevea brasiliensis clonal seedlings showed that it was possible to divide photosynthetic rates into high and low classes.

Low-temperature stress in eggplant during the cool season causes gradual loss of pollen fertility and leads to the development of seedless fruit, but female fertility is not similarly affected. The temperature-induced male sterility is transient, and full pollen fertility is regained with normal seed development, as temperature conditions improve.

Land use and land cover changes are driven by human actions and, in turn, drive changes that alter the availability of products and services for people and livestock. For proper planning, these cause-and-effect interrelations need to be understood. This is especially important for Ethiopia where the resource base is declining and should be improved in order to feed the growing population. To better understand these interrelations, we studied trends in the natural resource base over a 35-year period for two contrasting sites in the Ethiopian Highlands: semi-arid and water-short Lenche Dima, and sub-humid and moisture-sufficient Kuhar Michael. Information was obtained using time-series satellite images, geographical positioning system, a socio-economic survey and a document review. Results showed that for sub-arid Lenche Dima there were minimal changes in land use and land cover patterns, while in water-sufficient Kuhar Michael cropland greatly increased at the expense of the grazing land and bare soil. At the same time land holding size and cattle numbers decreased in Lenche Dima while they remained the same in Kuhar Michael, although overall land holdings remained larger in Lenche Dima than in Kuhar Michael. This study thus found large differences in development of agriculture since the 1970s: intensification of agriculture is possible in the water-sufficient sub-humid climate by displacing animal husbandry with high value crops that need irrigation during the dry monsoon season. This is not possible for the semi-arid area where water is the limiting factor in production even if a market is close by. Agriculture in the semi-arid areas also requires larger land holdings because of the risk of droughts and low yields during some years. This comparative analysis suggests that without sufficient water, the shift from subsistent to commercial market-driven agriculture cannot be easily accomplished.

In dryland areas, where rains recede much earlier than the time of sowing of crops, moisture in the seed zone becomes limiting for stand establishment. Mulches are known to conserve moisture in the upper soil layers, so we studied the effect of mulching a standing maize or fallow on the yield of the maize and on following wheat. Mulching maize with green twigs of ‘basooti’ a few weeks before harvest increased its yield by 16%. Both in maize and on fallow mulching increased water storage, particularly in the upper soil layers, and increased wheat yields from 19.0 to 22.5 q/ha after maize and 29.1 to 33.3 q/ha after fallow. It also led to increased water use and water use efficiency of wheat.

Aflatoxin was found in forty-one out of seventy-four samples of various pulses, whereas Aspergillus flavus occurred in all samples, and there was an apparent correlation between the occurrence of the fungus and the level of the toxin in haricot beans. There was evidence that the toxin was produced in haricot beans after harvest, and drying the pods immediately after harvest is therefore suggested as a method of controlling mould growth and the formation of aflatoxin.
