Pregnancy is a time of profound physical and emotional change as well as an increased risk of mental health problems. Providing social support is vital to reduce such risk.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at examining the relationship between social support and depression, anxiety and self-harm during pregnancy.

We searched observational studies from PubMed, Psych Info, MIDIRS, SCOPUS, and CINAHL databases. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale tool was used for quality appraisal. The Q and the I² statistics were used to evaluate heterogeneity. A random-effects model was used to pool estimates. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot and Egger’s regression test and adjusted using trim and Fill analysis. All the analysis was conducted using STATA.

Sixty-seven studies with 64,449 pregnant women were part of the current review. Of the total 67 studies, 22 and 45 studies were included in the narrative analysis and meta-analysis, respectively. From the studies included in the narrative analysis, 20(91%) of them reported a significant association between social support and the risk of mental health problems (i.e. depression, anxiety, and self-harm). After adjusting for publication bias, the results of the random-effect model revealed low social support was significantly associated with antenatal depression (AOR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.41) and antenatal anxiety (AOR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.34, 2.92).

Low social support was significantly associated with depression, anxiety, and self-harm during pregnancy. Policy-makers and those working on maternity care should consider the development of targeted social support programs to help reduce mental health problems amongst pregnant women.

Certain neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), namely apathy, depression and anxiety demonstrated great value in predicting dementia progression representing eventually an opportunity window for timely diagnosis and treatment. However, sensitive and objective markers of these symptoms are still missing.

To investigate the association between automatically extracted speech features and NPS in early-stage dementia patients.

Speech of 141 patients aged 65 or older with neurocognitive disorder was recorded while performing two short narrative speech tasks. Presence of NPS was assessed by the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Paralinguistic markers relating to prosodic, formant, source, and temporal qualities of speech were automatically extracted, correlated with NPS. Machine learning experiments were carried out to validate the diagnostic power of extracted markers.

Different speech variables seem to be associated with specific neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia; apathy correlates with temporal aspects, anxiety with voice quality and this was mostly consistent between male and female after correction for cognitive impairment. Machine learning regressors are able to extract information from speech features and perform above baseline in predicting anxiety, apathy and depression scores.

Different NPS seem to be characterized by distinct speech features which in turn were easily extractable automatically from short vocal tasks. These findings support the use of speech analysis for detecting subtypes of NPS. This could have great implications for future clinical trials.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated to high personal and social burden, impaired social functioning and high levels of disability. Recent studies have showed that relapse rates are significantly reduced in those patients whose families receive psychoeducational interventions. Even though most of available evidences are related to the short-term efficacy of psychoeducational family interventions (PFI). No evidence is available on medium and long-term efficacy.

This study aims to assess the efficacy after one and five years of PFI in BD in terms of: 1) improvement of patients’ symptoms and global functioning; 2) improvement of relatives’ objective and subjective burden and coping strategies.

A multicenter, controlled, outpatient trial has been conducted in BD patients and their key relatives, recruited in 11 Italian mental health centers. Patient’s clinical status, social and personal functioning, burden of illness, and relative’s burden and coping strategies were assessed with specific instruments at baseline, after 1 year and after 5 years.

137 families were recruited, 70 allocated to the experimental intervention. After one year, an increasing positive effect on patients’ clinical status, global functioning and objective and subjective burden was found. Moreover, were observed a reduced number of relapses and of hospitalizations after five years, compared to the control group. A reduction in the levels of family burden and an improvement of their coping strategies were also observed.

Positive effects of the experimental intervention persist over the mid and long-term period. PFI should be provided in mental health centres to patients with BD and their relatives.

Evidence suggests that besides having stigmatizing misconceptions towards people with mental illness, medical students and doctors often resist seeking help for their own mental issues. This is a vulnerable group for stress and other mental health problems, due not only to professional burden but also high perfectionism and low self-compassion.

To analyse the relationship between mental health stigma (MHS) and other variables related to personality and emotional states in a sample of medical students.

634 medicine and dentistry students (mean age = 21.6±6.9;81.4% female) answered to a survey including sociodemographic data, self-perception of psychological health/SPPH and the Portuguese validated versions of: Link’s Perceived Discrimination and Devaluation (PDD) scale to assess MHS and its two dimensions - social stigma/SocS and self-stigma/SelS; Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21); Neff’s Self-Compassion Scale (SCS); and Big Three Perfectionism Scale (BTPS). Correlations, t-student tests and linear regressions were performed with SPSS 27.0.

Stigma correlated negatively to SPPH and positively to DASS, the negative poles of SCS (self-judgement, isolation and over-identification) and BTPS second-order factors (all from p<.05 to p<.01). No gender differences in MHS were observed. Participants with higher mean levels of total and SelS had significantly higher scores in all DASS dimensions and lower SPPH; participants with higher SocS also scored higher in DASS, but didn’t reveal lower SPPH. Isolation was a significant predictor of SocS (R2=2.8%;p<.05); isolation and narcissistic perfectionism were significant predictors of SelS (R2=11%;p<.01).

Our results highlight the importance of including MHS as a main need in the curricula of future doctors.

Deep Brain Stimulation is an increasingly viable, well-established treatment for medication refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder. Yet, its neuromodulatory effects on the brain have led to varying and opposing neuroethical debates about its potential influence on a range of phenomena such as human agency, sense of nonauthenticity and identity.

Establish the importance of maintaining the psychotherapeutic alliance in a long-term DBS patient who reported minimal device side effect and no brain-technology interface interpersonal issues; yet struggled with a paradoxical phenomenon of psychic distress surrounding issues of agency and identity, not through device implantation, but through morphology of cognitions from negativistic interpersonal dynamics and spousal victim-blaming due to the necessity for such a device.

Case-report of a 60+-year-old gentleman with a history of childhood-onset, treatment refractory OCD with a 15-year history of bilateral DBS lead placed via a ventral caudate/ ventral striatum trajectory through the anterior limb of the internal capsule to the nucleus accumbens.

Years later he was only minimally improved above baseline; yet now with a few-years increasing degree of distress over a perceived atrophy of his capabilities that he felt was validated through what he described as his failure of artificial bionics. Extensive device setting re-optimization did not improve efficacy and with supportive therapy, the DBS device was weaned, and turned off.

The following year the therapeutic foci were on interpersonal identity, existential acceptance of breakthrough symptoms, and engagement of spouse into marital counseling leading to subsequent resolution of distress with improved quality of life.

An extensive literature regarding gender differences relevant to several aspects of schizophrenia is nowadays available. It includes some robust findings as well as some inconsistencies. The identification of gender differences and the understanding of their explanations may help to clarify the underlying etiopathogenetic mechanisms of specific aspects of the disorder.

The present study aimed at investigating gender differences on premorbid, clinical, cognitive and outcome indices, as well as their impact on recovery, in a large sample of patients with schizophrenia recruited within the multicenter study of the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses.

State-of-the-art instruments were used to assess the investigated domains. Group comparisons between male and female patients were performed on all considered indices. The associations of premorbid, clinical and cognitive indices with recovery in the two patient groups were investigated by means of multiple regressions.

Males with respect to females had a worse premorbid adjustment – limited to the academic dimension – an earlier age of onset, a higher frequency of history of substance and alcohol abuse, more severe negative symptoms (both avolition and expressive deficit), positive symptoms and impairment of social cognition. No gender difference was observed in neurocognition nor in the rates of recovery.

Although males showed some disadvantages in the clinical picture, this was not translated into a worse outcome. This finding may be related to the complex interplay of several factors acting as predictors or mediators of outcome.

Cultural barriers and prejudices of mental healthcare professionals may promote inequalities in the provision of care to immigrant population and have a negative impact in provided service quality.

A literature review has been made through PubMed database.

Immigrants’ accessibility to mental health services may be related to social insurance problems, inadequate knowledge about their health rights, inadequate knowledge of the local language, as well as the bureaucracy of Greek State which may complicate mental health examination and treatment. The challenges faced by mental healthcare professionals in terms of diagnosis and treatment of migrants include communication difficulties due to linguistic and cultural differences as far as verbal presentation of symptoms and illness behavior is concerned. Culturally competent mental health professionals should work to erase racism and prejudice, to be familiar with cultural issues and have adequate knowledge related to cultural groups, to learn the life story of each patient separately and encourage patients to explain how their illness affects their lives, promoting a trustful communication environment in the context of healthcare provision.

Exploring the specific needs of migrants as well as assessing the degree of satisfaction from their access to healthcare services are essential to providing integrated mental health care for people from different culture.

Childhood trauma is associated with an increased risk of anxiety and depressive disorders, but its association with anger, irritability, and related constructs has received less attention.

We aimed to investigate (1) the relationship between childhood trauma and anger constructs in adulthood, and (2) which types of childhood trauma is most predictive.

In the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), childhood trauma at baseline was assessed with a semi-structured interview. Childhood trauma was analyzed in relation to the Spielberger Trait Anger Subscale (STAS), the Anger Attacks Questionnaire, and the cluster B personality traits part of the Personality Disorder Questionnaire 4 (PDQ-4), measured at 4-year follow-up, using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and multivariable logistic regression analyses, adjusting for sex, age, level of education, BMI, smoking, alcohol dependency/abuse, disorder status.

Participants were on average 42.1 years (SD = 13.1), and 66.3% (n = 1.508) were female. Childhood trauma showed a dose-response association with all anger constructs. Zooming in, emotional neglect, and psychological, and physical abuse were associated with all anger constructs, independently of depression or anxiety. Additionally, sexual abuse and childhood life events were associated with trait anger and borderline personality traits, and trait anger and antisocial personality traits retrospectively.

Childhood trauma is linked with anger in adulthood. Childhood trauma may cause not only anxiety and depression, but also anger, and tailored interventions (at both childhood trauma and anger itself) might help to improve unsatisfactory relationships and prevent violent behaviors.

Bipolar disorder is related with functional impairment in euthymia. The contribution of biological functions such as sleep, sexual functioning; or the presence of obesity on this loss remain understudied.

The aim of this work was to study the influence of biological determinants in context with clinical and demographical determinants of functioning in a 3-year cohort of euthymic BD patients.

In this multicentric study 67 euthymic adult bipolar outpatients were followed during three years. Functioning was assessed with FAST, insomnia severity with Oviedo Sleep Questionnaire (OSQ) and, sexual functioning with Changes on Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (CSFQ-14) and obesity was expressed as body mass index (BMI). The basal effect of sleep, sexual functioning and obesity (Time 0) on FAST (Time 3) was analyzed with a mixed ordinal regression model including time effect, age, sex, number of manic and depressive episodes, euthymia length, and comorbidity with personality disorder. Change in functioning (Time 3 to 0) was analyzed in another mixed model also considering the difference in biological determinants (Time 3 to 0) and the presence of mood episodes during the period.

A basal worse sexual functioning, a higher severity of insomnia and a higher BMI predicted a worse functioning at three years (p=0.005, p=0.043, p=0.05 respectively). Regarding FAST difference from Time0 to 3, only having a manic episode related to an impairment on functioning (p=0.027).

Sexual functioning, quality of sleep and BMI are predictors of functioning in euthymia in BD. Manic episodes in the following contribute to impairments on functioning more than depressive episodes.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound worldwide impact on health. Acute Confusional Syndrome (ACS) is the most common neuropsychiatric complication in COVID-19 infection.

Describe the characteristics of the admited patients attended by the liaison psychiatry service for acute confusional syndrome during the COVID 19 pandemic. Sociodemographical and clinical variables were descrived.

We conducted an observational, descriptive study. All patients attended by the liaison psychiatry service of Hospital del Mar, between February and April 2020, with ACS diagnosis were included.

We included 62 patients with acute confusional syndrom; 35 were men (56.5%), and mean age was 71.71 years (standard deviation [SD]:11.345). The mean duration of admision stay was 41.19 days [SD: 38.039]. The mean number of consultations carried out was 6.5 [SD: 5.422]. 52.5% of our sample of our sample had confusional symptoms for 8 days. 50 patients presented complications during admission (80.6%), of which 43 patients developed infectious complications (69.4%). 59 patients had a history of chronic diseases (95.2%). 54 patiens (88.5%) had potencial risk factors associated with acute confusional syndrome including: isolation in 24 (39.3%), active infection in 46 (74.2%), hypoxemia in 25 (40.3%), previous cognitive impairment in 15 (24.6%)

Acute Confusional Syndrome mainly affects people with risk factors such as isolation, active infection and hypoxemia (which in turn are symptoms of Covid-19).

There are extremely few reported cases of OCD causing catatonia and some of those cases are possibly associated with the somewhat contentious diagnosis of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus. As there is a symptom overlap between OCD and catatonia some cases of catatonia are possibly being missed, warranting discussion regarding differential diagnosis, symptomatology, and treatment of catatonia and OCD.

We describe a case of a 18-year-old patient who developed severe catatonia secondary to OCD, possibly related to PANDAS/PANS. We discuss the complex work-up, differential diagnosis, and treatment of this patient.

Discussion of a single case and a review of catatonia literature as it relates to OCD and autoimmune disorders.

Our patient was an 18-year-old Ukrainian male who presented with sub-acute onset of decreased movement, decreased oral intake, and inability to speak. He was diagnosed with catatonia of an unclear etiology and treated with high-dose lorazepam at an outside hospital then transferred to our care. Presenting symptoms were then clarified and found to be consistent with OCD, upon which OCD treatment was initiated. The patient’s sub-acute and severe onset of OCD raised the question of a PANDAS/PANS diagnosis, which was further investigated. Ultimately, his symptoms improved with ongoing lorazepam and he was transferred to another hospital for ECT treatment.

OCD has been observed to cause catatonia in extremely rare cases. Diagnosing catatonia associated with OCD is challenging and important as catatonia is associated with significant morbidity and mortality if left untreated. Our patient improved with concurrent treatment of catatonia and OCD.

TikTok is a free mobile application, that enables users to create short videos. TikTok has an estimated one billion monthly active users, comprised of a mostly younger audience. There has been a noticed rise in content discussing ADHD – hashtag ADHD on TikTok has 6.3 billion views. The discussions continue on Twitter, where users are reporting watching TikTok content explaining ADHD symptomatology, subsequently relating to the condition and requesting referrals to specialist psychiatry services. This study aims to identify key themes in discussions around TikTok and ADHD, and its ramifications.

This study’s objective is to discuss the relationship between viewing ADHD content of TikTok and self-diagnoses of ADHD in young people.

In our study, Twitter posts were identified with the words ‘ADHD’ and ‘TikTok’ and established key themes relating to self-diagnosis of ADHD.

Numerous tweets were found discussing individual’s experiences of self-diagnosis of ADHD after watching TikTok videos and relating with the symptomology. Furthermore, many users discussed their efforts to seek diagnosis from psychiatrists. These posts highlighted positive discussion of mental health, and the improvement in quality of life since diagnosis.

Many young people are self-diagnosing ADHD after viewing TikTok videos. This may improve mental health stigma, however the expertise of the video creators should be scrutinised. Furthermore, the impact on already stretched waiting lists should be considered, with individuals who’s perceived ADHD traits are not impacting on their quality of life.

Adolescent´s subjective well-being (SWB) can be improved through the training of emotional intelligence (EI).

The goal of this study is to determine the general link between EI and SWB in adolescents, to analyze the affective (AWB) and cognitive components (CWB) of SWB, and to investigate the moderating effect of EI models on both types of SWB.

We searched PsycINFO and WOS from inception to December 2020. Eligible studies reported an association between EI and SWB in adolescents aged from 10 to 19 years using instruments that directly measure SWB. Two meta-analyses were conducted, one for the relationship between EI and AWB and the other for EI and CWB.

A total of 41 studies were included, of which 37 were pooled in the meta-analyses. We obtained a significant positive relationship between EI and AWB (estimated effect size = 0.35) and between EI and CWB (0.29). Concerning EI models, self-report ability showed an estimated effect size of 0.33 for AWB and 0.28 for CWB. For the self-report mixed model, we found an estimated effect size of 0.42 for AWB and 0.38 for CWB.

Establishing a quantitative relationship between SWB and EI makes it possible to implement both clinical and educational prevention measures. Introducing EI training in educational and clinical settings can increase SWB, which could significantly impact the prevention of emotional disorders in adolescents.

While alcohol-induced psychotic disorder (AIPD) is a well-recognised clinical disorder, relativery little is known about aspects such as epidemiology, course and treatment of the condition. Current evidence suggests AIPD can be clinically distinguised from alcohol-withdrawal delirium and schizophrenia. AIPD is associated with high comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders, high re-hospitalization and mortality rate, namely suicidal behaviour.

The objetive of the study was to examine the correlates, clinical features, psycopathology, and short-term response in an inpatient sample with alcohol-induced psychotic disorder, predominant hallucinations (ICD-10 F10.52) admitted to Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa.

We collected retrospectively data from all admitted patients to our Alcohol Unit between January 2010 and January 2020 with the diagnosis of AIPD. The exclusion criteria were: presence of preexisting psychotic disorder, delirium, or other substance use disorders. We characterized our sample in Demographic categories, Clinical categories, Treatment and Short-term course.

A total of 113 subjects were included in the study. The prevalance of alcoholic hallucinosis was found to be 1.3% of all patients who received inpatient treatment. Most individuals reported auditory hallucinations, that iniciated when they decrease their alcohol intake, and 1 in 4 had past episodes of AIPD.

There are specific challenges in studiyng AIPD, such as the relatively rarity of the disorder, its often transient nature and high levels of comorbidity. A high degree of recurrence and morbidity indicates a need to prevent, and intervene early with an abstinent-oriented management goal.

Sexual assault is a major problem in Tunisian society. There is no definitive typology of the characteristics of those who sexually assault. A great diversity of sexual aggression behaviors and different motivations can be described.

It is about a retrospective survey, achieved from data of Medical Expertise of the sexual offenders achieved in psychiatric departement of hospital of mahdia. This study revealed 18 cases during the period from January 2010 to December 2020.

The objective of the work was to describe the epidemiological and criminological profile of the sexual assaults.

Mean age of the sample was 40 years [30-61]. Aggressors were almost exclusively males, have medium socioeconomic status and without a regular job. Fifty percent of the perpetrators had a psychiatric diagnosis: bipolar disorder (27.7%), schizophrenia (11.1%), antisocial personality disorder (5.5%) and intellectual disability (5.5%). Indecent assault (27.7%) was the most frequent aggression then the rape (22,2%). Thirty three per cent of the victims were minor.Among these expertised patients, 72% were considered responsible for their actions and only one was considered irresponsible.

Studies on the characteristics of sexual offenders have concluded to the profile of the young, single and unemployed male, but it can’t be a commun profile.

Imposing quarantine as a measure to manage the coronavirus pandemic is a stressful event that is often associated with negative psychological effects. Eating habits seemed to be significantly affected during the quarantine, while strong negative emotions were triggered as the feeling of loneliness increased at the same time.

This study aims to investigate the eating habits of individuals during quarantine and the role of positive and negative emotions and loneliness in shaping these habits.

An online cross-sectional study was performed using 3 validated scales, EAT-26 (3 subscales: Dieting, Bulimia and Food Preoccupation, Oral Control), Modified Differential Emotions Scale and UCLA Loneliness Scale. Data was collected between April and May 2021 mainly from social media platforms. Statistical analyses included linear regression and mediation analyses.

Abnormal eating habits were detected in 25% of the participants (N= 450, ages 18-74) while the majority reported medium rates of negative/positive emotions and loneliness. Female sex is associated with abnormal eating habits (p=0.010) and mainly dietary behaviors (p=0.029). Negative emotions (p=0.032) and loneliness (p=0.001) seem to be predictive factors of eating habits in general and bulimic behaviors. Negative emotions correlate directly with eating habits. However, we found a significant mediation of loneliness (p=0.032). Furthermore, the observed association between negative emotions and bulimia is partly mediated by loneliness (p=0.018).

Negative emotions and loneliness seemed to play an important role in shaping eating habits during quarantine. Multilevel public health interventions are needed to address the negative effects of quarantine and pandemic in general.

Valproic acid (VPA) is considered a well-tolerated antiepileptic drug used in Bipolar Disorder as a mood stabilizer. Nevertheless, VPA has been related to several adverse effects. Neutropenia is included as a potential adverse effect, although in clinical practice it is not often measured with regularity.

To report a case of a patient with Bipolar Disorder type 2 and Personality Disorder Cluster B treated with VPA with a neutropenia caused by VPA.

A 61-year-old woman assists to the outpatient psychiatric unit in order to a pharmacological treatment adjustment. A blood test is performed showing a decrease in the levels of neutrophiles in comparison with previous tests. Psychiatric history is revised finding and association between the prescription of VPA and the reduction of neutrophile levels. When this drug was removed, neutrophile levels had increased again up to normal levels.

Due to the relationship between neutropenia and VPA treatment, we decided to discontinue this drug. At the beginning the patient doesn’t agree with the withdrawal of VPA treatment due to its effectiveness in her mood stabilization. Psychoeducation sessions are performed in order to explain risk and benefits of potentials treatment alternatives versus maintaining the same prescription. Finally the patient accepts the switch of the mood stabilizer treatment to oxcarbazepine with a good tolerability and effectiveness.

Periodical blood test monitoring is needed in order to study adverse effects as neutropenia in patients with VPA treatment.

The new adoption law, which was introduced in Greece in 2018, brought radical changes in adoption.

This presentation aimed to investigate the emotions of the prospective stepparents, based on the changes which were effectuated by the new law of adoption.

This survey was conducted through mixed methodology. Quantitative research was addressed to investigate the emotions of the to prospective stepparents. Qualitative research was addressed to social workers and its goal was to depict their opinion about the new law and the prospective stepparents’ expressed emotions.

The findings of the survey have demonstrated that the stepparents had a variety of emotions that changed throughout the adoption process. The dominant feelings of parents at the first visit with the social worker were stress and anxiety. However, at the end of the training process, these feelings were replaced by confidence and impatience. This emotional rotation of prospective stepparents was confirmed in the social workers’ interviews. In addition, social workers interviews highlighted the importance of the amendment of the old law of adoption’s process.

To sum up, this research has shown the importance of the new law and therefore the significance of its right application from all children’s placements in Greece. Nevertheless, it seems that due to the recent application of the new law, many placements have not yet complied with it and therefore there is urgent need for reinforcement of its application, according to the guidelines of the European Union that demanded gradual deinstitutionalization using the alternative types of child care.
