Cognitive deficit is a significant problem in schizophrenic patients. It cannot be attenuated by any antipsychotic drugs. It has been known that changes of neuronal density is correlated with learning and memory deficits. Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi), popularly known as a cognitive enhancer, might be a novel therapeutic agent for cognitive deficit in schizophrenia by changing cerebral neuronal density.

To determine the effects of Brahmi on attenuation at cognitive deficit and on the neuronal density in the prefrontal cortex, striatum and cornu ammonis subfield 1 (CA1) and 2/3 (CA2/3) of hippocampus in sub-chronic phencyclidine (PCP) rat model of schizophrenia.

Rats were assigned to three groups; Group-1: Control, Group-2: PCP administration and Group-3: PCP + Brahmi. Rats were tested for cognitive ability by using novel object recognition test. Neuronal density from a serial Nissl stain sections of the prefrontal cortex, striatum and CA1-3 of all rats were measured by using Image ProPlus software and manual counting.

Sub-chronic PCP administration resulted in cognitive deficits in novel object recognition task. This occurred alongside significantly increased neuronal density in CA1. The cognitive deficit was recovery to normal in PCP + Brahmi group and this occurred alongside significantly decreased neuronal density in CA1.

Brahmi can be a potential cognitive enhancer against Schizophrenia. It reduces density of neuron in CA1. The reduced neuron is possibly glutamatergic neuron, which results in neuronal toxicity and cognitive deficit. Therefore, Brahmi eliminates glutamatergic excitotoxicity in CA1 and cognitive function is then recovery.

We compared the efficacy and safety of lamotrigine versus placebo for the treatment of acute alcohol hallucinosis comorbid depersonalization disorders.

10 days, randomized, double-blind, parallel study. A total of 40 patients with an ICD-10 diagnosis of acute alcohol hallucinosis comorbid depersonalization disorders were randomized to lamotrigine 300 mg/d (n = 40), or placebo (n = 40). The primary efficacy measure was the PANSS subscale for hallucinosis and Cambridge Depersonalization Scale (CDS).

Iamotrigine treated patients demonstrated a statistically significant greater improvement in PANSS subscale for hallucinosis and CDS than placebo-treated patients.

Lamotrigine demonstrated greater efficacy than placebo in treatment of acute hallucinosis comorbid depersonalization disorders and was generally well tolerated.

Delirium is associated with poor outcomes and high mortality. Current research shows conflicting results regarding mortality rates in patients with delirium.

The aim was to examine the hazard risk associated with delirium in elderly medically ill patients at 1 year follow-up, controlling for baseline risk factors and interaction effects.

This was a prospective, observational, longitudinal study carried out in the medical wards of Sligo Regional Hospital. All acute medical admissions of patients 70 years old and over were approached. Each patient was assessed twice weekly for 2 weeks or until discharge. The following scales were used: CAM, DRS-98R, MoCA, Barthel Index, APACHE II. Primary outcome was time of death during 1 year. Cox proportional hazards were estimated and compared across patients who had delirium during hospitalisation and those who did not.

Two hundred patients agreed to take part in the study. The mean age of the studied sample was 81.13 (SD = 6.45; minimum 70 and maximum 100 years old) with 100 (50%) females. One hundred fifty four (77%) patients never developed delirium during hospitalization. Thirty four (17%) had delirium at admission and 12 (6%) developed prevalence delirium while inpatients. A total of 55 (27.5%) patients died during the one year follow-up. Significant risk factors for 1 year mortality were length of hospital staying, severity of illness (APACHE II), and cognition (MoCA).

Delirium was not found as an independent risk factor for 1 year mortality after controlling for other confounder variables.

Compassion is the capacity to be sensitive to pain and suffering of ourselves and others, accompanied by the commitment to alleviate it. Self-compassion has a positive effect on mental health (stress reduction and preventing recurrence of depression) and increases with the practice of mindfulness. For the general population several loving-kindness and compassion training programmes have been studied with promising results. At our outpatient center for integrative psychiatry, a novel compassion-focused training was developed: Mindfulness Based Compassionate Living training (MBCL) for patients who already followed a mindfulness training. MBCL consists of explicit exercises in loving-kindness and compassion, so that patients can deepen their skills in mindfulness and particularly in self-compassion in a safe way.

To examine the effects of MBCL training in a heterogeneous psychiatric outpatient population on levels of depression, anxiety, mindfulness and compassion.

The training consists of nine 1,5-hour sessions. Patients completed four questionnaires before and after the training (Beck Depression Inventory-II, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, Self Compassion Scale).

Thirty-three patients participated in this pilot study (mean age 47,6 years; 82% female). MBCL training reduced levels of depression and anxiety, although results for anxiety were not significant. Levels of mindfulness and self-compassion increased significantly.

The outcome of this pilot study was judged very encouraging and MBCL training was therefore included in the treatment program of our center, enabling us to further investigate its effects as well as the underlying working mechanisms.

Little is known about the excess mortality associated with use of some illicit substances. In particular, this concerns the risks associated with injection drug use and psychiatric disorders.

This study estimated mortality following substance abuse treatment among primary users of cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, MDMA, and opioids. The risks associated with injection drug use and psychiatric comorbidity were assessed.

A register of individuals in treatment for illicit substance disorders was linked with registers on psychiatric treatment and mortality. The study population consisted of 20581 individuals who received treatment in Denmark between 1996 and 2006. There were 1441 deaths recorded over 111445 person-years of follow-up.

Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMRs) for primary users of specific substances were: Cannabis: 4.9, cocaine: 6.4, amphetamine: 6.0, heroin: 9.1, and other opioids 7.7. For MDMA the crude mortality rate was 1.75/1000 person-years, and the SMR was not significantly elevated. Sharing of syringes was associated with increased mortality in both primary users of opioids (hazard ratio (HR): 1.58 [95% CI 1.22–1.99], p < .001) and cocaine/amphetamine (HR: 9.52 (95% CI 3.94–23.02, p < .001). Overall, psychiatric comorbidity was associated with modestly increased mortality (HR: 1.15 [95% CI 1.03–1.29], p = .012) and in particular for primary users of cocaine/amphetamine (HR: 2.74 [95% CI 1.56–4.80], p < .001).

High SMRs were found among individuals who had received treatment for cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, and opioid use disorders. Injection drug use was clearly associated with excess mortality, while the impact of psychiatric comorbidity was generally modest.

According to studies done in recent years regarding the treatment of patients with recurrent depressive disorder, a shift of interest from studies evaluating the effectiveness of therapy to the study of remission is seen. According to the literature, complete remission occurs in only 40–50% of patients, in other cases there is residual symptoms.

Evaluating the effectiveness of art therapy in treatment in patients with recurrent depressive disorder on the quality of remission.

The study involved 135 patients: 60 male and 75 female patients aged from 18 to 30 years old. The main group of patients apart the combined treatment also participated in group art therapy with the use of drawing techniques, while the control group – statutory standard therapy. We used clinical, psychopathological, psychodiagnostic and statistical methods.

The results of the effectiveness of art therapy in complex treatment in patients with recurrent depressive disorder is detected primarily in reducing of the level of anxiety at the early stages of treatment, as well as in reducing of the severity of anhedonia and improving the quality of life in remission period.

These results support the use of art therapy in treatment in patients with recurrent depressive disorder during period of active treatment, and after achieving clinical remission contributes to achieving and maintaining high-quality and stable remission with full restoration of quality of life and social functioning.

There is an evidence indicating that women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) quite common suffer from anxiety and depression, but predictors and protective factors are not well known in this group of patients.

The aim of the study was to try to find factor that are connected with higher rates of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the group of female patients experiencing IPV.

The study was conducted in six randomly selected centers of primary health care (PHCs) in Lublin province. One hundred and two female patients experiencing IPV were administered a structured questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The sequential models were created with using backward stepwise multiple regression to investigate potential risk and protective factors connected with higher rates of anxiety and depression symptom in the group.

In a study group, 68% in Anxiety Subscale(A) and 56% in Depression Subscale of HADS (D) had positive scores. Living in the country (P = 0.003) was connected with higher scores in HADS-A (P = 0.003) but not in HADS-D. Experiencing physical violence was connected with higher score in HADS-D (P = 0.005), but not in HADS-A. Chronic physical illness (A P = 0.013; D P = 0.015), being unemployed (A P = 0.024; B P = 0.008), and experiencing economic violence (A P < 0.001; D P = 0.001) were connected with higher stores in both Subscales of HADS. Taking financial support (A P = 0.002, D P = 0.003) was the protective factor for both kinds of symptoms.

Socio-economic factors have stronger influence on anxiety and depressive symptoms in women experiencing IPV than demographic factors.

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the elderly and its consequences are severe.

To measure the prevalence of depression in elderly cancer patients and subsequently determine the sociodemographic and clinical factors correlated with this disorder.

We conducted a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study of patients aged over than 65 years old, suffering from cancer and who had no cognitive impairment, admitted in 2013 in the Oncology and palliative care unit of Gabes regional Hospital (Tunisia). We used a self-rating questionnaire to detect sociodemographics and clinical variables, the Geriatric depression scale (GDS) to assess depressive symptoms, and the Activity of Daily Living to determine the degree of autonomy.

At the end of our investigation, we included 60 patients. The prevalence of depression was 48%. Depression was significantly correlated with: marital status (widower subjects were more depressed (74% vs. 34%, P = 0.007)), less degree of autonomy (80% vs. 38%, P = 0.04), fatigue (62% vs. 26%, P = 0.007), pain (59% vs. 26%, P = 0.02), family psychiatric history (80% vs. 20%, P = 0.02), family history of death by cancer (72% vs. 38%, P = 0.01), WHO condition (67% vs. 34%, P = 0.04) and the presence of co morbidity in particularly diabetes (69% vs. 41%, P = 0.05).

Depression is prevalent in oncogeriatric environments. This could compromise quality of support and care of these patients. Close collaboration between oncologist and psychiatrist is needed to support and relieve these patients.

Healthcare professionals report about anxiety, depression, and fear during pandemic COVID-19 worldwide. Resilience becomes the high-powered important mechanism that reduces stress impact on the emotional state of healthcare professionals.

We suggested that effective resilience is associated with less COVID-19’s fear, as well as less anxiety, and depression; healthcare professionals’ mental health depends on age, gender, as well as involvement in the care of patients with COVID-19.

211 healthcare professionals participated in the study and were evaluated with the Connor-Davidson Resilience 10-item scale (CD-RISC-10), Fear of COVID-19 Scale, PHQ-9, GAD-7.

A negative correlation between resilience and fear of COVID-19 (p≤0,01), anxiety (p≤0,01), and depression (p≤0,001) was found. Positive correlations were found between depression, anxiety, and fear of COVID-19 (p≤0,001), between age and fear of COVID-19 (p≤0,05). No statistically significant association between age and depression, anxiety, or resilience was found. The significant difference of COVID-19 fear depending on gender – female vs male (p≤0,05) was found. No statistically significant difference in resilience and emotional state in healthcare professionals depending on the involvement in the care of patients with COVID-19 were found.

Resilience is associated with better mental health in healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Anxiety and depression are connected with the fear of COVID-19 and highly comorbid in healthcare professionals. The elder age and female gender are among the risk factors for a more deteriorated mental state. Fear of COVID-19, mental state, and resilience are not associated with healthcare professionals’ involvement in the care of patients with COVID-19.

The role of mental illness in the pathway leading to suicide is widely discussed in the literature. Nonetheless, the debate about this issue is open, both from a clinical and philosophical point of view.

The purpose of the present study was to compare suicide attempters with and without a history of psychiatric disorder, in order to highlight the possible differences between the two groups, with a specific focus on intent to die and methods of the attempt.

Data from all ER referrals undergoing a psychiatric consultation in the period 2008–2015 at the Maggiore della Carità Hospital, Novara, Italy, were gathered. Comparison of qualitative data was performed by means of the Chi2 test. Statistical significance was set at P ≤ 0.05.

We have already gathered data from more than 2000 ER psychiatric consultations, including 495 suicide attempters. Preliminary results suggest that these kinds of behaviours are more common in subjects without psychiatric disorders but with clinical history of previous contact with mental health services and in psychopharmacological therapy. Reasons for self-harming are associated with relational problems rather than psychiatric symptoms. Among Axis II diagnoses, almost half of cases are affected by histrionic personality disorder.

The results described above should be considered as preliminary, as data collection and statistical analyses are still ongoing. Anyway, the observed correlation between previous contact with mental health services, socio-relational issues and suicide attempt, and the significant frequency of attempts in histrionic personality disorders seem to be particularly interesting. Implications will be discussed.

To investigate the role of perfectionism in the development of disordered eating behaviours.

382 female university students completed the Hewitt & Flett MPS and the EAT-40 at baseline, one year after (T1) and two years later (T2).

Perfectionism at baseline was significantly associated with long-term abnormal eating attitudes/behaviours. Self-Oriented Perfectionism (SOP) and Socially Prescribed Perfectionism (SPP) were significant predictors of disordered eating behaviours. SOP at baseline was predictive of diet concerns, at T1 and T2. Baseline SPP was correlated with overall eating disturbance at T1 and T2. Regression analysis revealed that only SPP was a significant predictor of bulimic behaviours and social pressure to eat at T1, but not at T2.

Our findings contribute to a more clear understanding of the association between perfectionism and eating disorders. SOP and SPP were prospectively associated with abnormal eating attitudes/behaviours and SOP was found to be predictive of diet concerns.

The severe mental disorders are the subject of growing research in the area of emotional intelligence because of his relationship with psychosocial functionality loss. Despite treatment advances, patients continue to experience high levels of social, professional and personal disabilities, related to the presence of deficits in cognition. These changes are manifested in two areas: the neurocognitive and social cognition.

To better understand the relationship between neuro- and sociocognition in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The aim of this research is to study the factors related to emotional intelligence, with particular interest in neurocognitive deficits.

A total of 75 adult patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder type I were evaluated. The assessment protocol consisted of a questionnaire on socio-demographic and clinical-care data, and a battery of clinical and cognitive scales, including MSCEIT, WAIS-IV, TMT and Rey Figure.

MSCEIT was negatively correlated with age, the severity of the clinical symptoms (BPRS, CGI-S), the TMT-A and the Test of Complex Figure, and positively with the intelligence quotient.

The deficits in emotional intelligence are part of a set of cognitive, social and non-social skills, which are altered in these severe mental disorders. Emotional intelligence worsens with the deterioration of cognitive functioning, executive dysfunction and severity of psychiatric disorder.

Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) defined by DSM-V is characterized by severe and recurrent temper outbursts and persistently irritable or angry mood.

Our aim is to attract attention to an adult case with DMDD since the literature is lacking adult manifestations.

A 18-year-old boy have been on follow-up in our outpatient clinic since he was 12 with complaints of being increasingly irritable and angry during most of the day. He had temper tantrums six or seven times per week involving verbal rages, physical aggression and throwing things to friends and family members. There had never been a distinct period lasting more than one day during which the full symptom criteria, for a manic, hypomanic or a depressive episode had been met. He was also reported to be hyperactive, impulsive, and had difficulty concentrating and focusing since he was seven. Laboratory evaluations were within normal limits. Results of screening forms provided by parents and teachers supported the presence of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ASRS, YMRS, STAXI, SCID-I, Diagnostic Interview for Adult ADHD (DIVA) were the psychometric evaluations carried out in order better to characterize the clinical situation.

He was considered as fulfilling DSM-5 criteria for ADHD and DMDD, and started on sertraline 50 mg/day and OROS methylphenidate 36 mg/day. At the following visits, temper tantrums were much reduced and there were moderate improvement in ADHD symptoms.

By defining the adult manifestations of DMDD accurately, clinicians will be able to improve diagnosis and care.
