Previously, a number of observational studies have found no association between contact with services and improved outcomes in children with psychopathology, despite the existence of effective interventions. The British Child and Adolescent Mental Health Survey (BCAMHS) 2004 is a study of 5,325 children aged 5-16, with data on parent-reported mental health-related public sector service contacts and psychopathology over three years, allowing exploration of the association in a large community-based dataset.

• Describe the trajectories of children in contact and not in contact with services over three years from 2004-2007

• Explore the association between mental health-related service contact over the study period and outcomes in terms of parent-rated psychopathology

This study is a secondary analysis of children's trajectories by service contact status (no contact, contact 2004 only, contact 2007 only, contact 2004 & 2007). The main measure of psychopathology over time was the well-validated Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Multivariable linear regression was used to examine the association between contact and outcomes in children with a psychiatric disorder at baseline in 2004.

Children in contact with services demonstrated the highest levels of psychopathology over time, and the 2007-only contact group displayed a trajectory of increasing difficulties. Overall, contact with services was not associated with improvement in outcomes, following adjustment for measured confounders.

The effectiveness of contact alone with services was not demonstrated in our findings. Despite methodological limitations, this underlines the need for continuing development and consistent implementation of effective interventions, alongside initiatives evaluating outcomes within services.

Pharmacotherapy is essential for the treatment of children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There are only two metaanalyzes available in the literature where bupropion (BUP) was also included and compared to atomoxetine (ATX) and methylphenidate (MPH) in the treatment of ADHD in youths.

There is a lack of comparative effectiveness research among ADHD medications in terms of efficacy, where BUP is compared with ATX, lisdexamfetamine (LDX) and MPH.

The main aim of this work was to compare the efficacy of these drugs in children and adolescents using a metaanalysis.

A literature search was conducted to identify double-blind, placebo-controlled, noncrossover studies of ADHD. A systematic electronic literature search of PubMed (1975–April 2014) and clinicaltrials.gov with full text (1981–April 2014) was conducted. Drug efficacy was calculated based on the standardized mean difference (SMD). Treatment score was the primary endpoint.

28 articles and 27 trials met inclusion criteria and were sufficient for inclusion in the metaanalysis. BUP 0.32 (95% CI, -0.05, 0.69) showed small efficacy, ATX 0.68 (95% CI, 0.59, 0.76), and MPH 0.75 (95% CI, 0.52, 0.98) showed modest efficacy in reducing ADHD symptoms and LDX showed high efficacy 1.28 (95% CL, 0.71, 1.84).

The results suggest that LDX has the best efficacy and has promising potential for treating children and adolescents with ADHD. Effect sizes should not be the only evidence for clinicians when choosing ADHD medication. More research is needed for a better clinical evaluation of BUP.

Next to the drug efficacy, the discontinuation rate or acceptability (all-cause withdrawal) is also important for successful treatment.

Treatment discontinuations were smaller than with a placebo, nonsignificant for ATX (OR = 0.91, 95% CI, 0.66, 1.24) and MPH (OR = 0.35, 95% CI, 0.24, 0.52) and significant for LDX (OR = 0.60, 95% CI, 0.22, 1.65) and nonsignificantly higher for BUP (OR = 1.64, 95% CI, 0.50, 5.43).

It is the first nonsponsored metaanalysis that analyzes and reports on discontinuations of ATX, BUP, LDX and MPH. The results suggest that MPH, ATX and LDX have the best acceptability. More research is needed for a better clinical evaluation of BUP.

Possible pathogenesis of cognitive impairments and psychiatric disorder in perinatally HIV infected children is related to the interaction of neurotoxic effects of infection, HIV exposure in utero and psychosocial factors. Studies on prevalence of cognitive impairment and psychiatric disorders have not been done in Poland so far.

The goal of the study was to assess the effects of perinatal HIV infection on the cognitive functions and mental health in children and adolescent in Poland.

45 vertically HIV-infected children, aged 6 to 18, were examined with the CANTAB. Results were compared to published age and gender-matched norms using z-scores. 41 subjects (a child and/or a caregiver) were interviewed using K-SADS-PL for the presence of psychiatric disorders (current or past) and were asked to complete sociodemographic questionnaire.

The results revealed significant impairment in a few of Cantab measures for infected group of patients. The main deficits in this group were in the tests of executive function: Stocking of Cambridge planning task, attentional set shifting, spatial working memory but also in the test of speed of movement. Out of 41 infected children tested up to day 24 met criteria for at least one current or past psychiatric disorder according to DSM-IV including ADHD, mood and anxiety disorders.

Further studies are required to recognize the multiple factors underlying cognitive impairments and psychiatric disorders in vertically HIV infected children.

Despite the strong evidence for its effectiveness for depression in adolescence, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) remains difficult to access in India. Computerized CBT offers a substantive contribution to the delivery of effective care improving accessibility of treatment. The present study is an endeavor to assess the felt needs of adolescents vis-à -vis the difficulties and stressors experienced by them. Another objective of the study has been to develop and test a culturally relevant computer assisted CBT program called 'smartteen'. The presentation will discuss the results of the pilot test of the effectiveness of the intervention on a sample of 20 participants in reducing depressive symptoms.

In this pre and post research design, 20 depressed adolescents seeking treatment from the Department of Psychiatry at a premier institute in India, are being randomly assigned to intervention (n=10) and treatment as usual (n=10). Three assessments will be carried out at pre, mid (6 weeks of intervention) and post intervention (3 months of intervention) by a blind assessor. The primary outcome is recovery from depression and analysis will be done by intent to treat.

The study is ongoing and results will be presented at the time of presentation.

Social anxiety refers to the discomfort felt in situations of social interaction or performance and may be an especially intense emotion in adolescence due to characteristics and developmental tasks of this age group. Although it is a common emotion and has an adaptive function, it can also develop as a negative experience raising serious difficulties in school and social life of young people.

This study analyses the contribution of childhood negative memories and fear of compassion in social anxiety in adolescence.

Three hundred and twenty adolescents (186 boys and 134 girls) with ages ranging from 12 to 19 years old took part in the study. Participants completed the following self-report measures: Early Life Experiences Scale for Adolescents, Fear of Compassion Scale (FCS-A) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A).

Significant gender differences were found regarding social anxiety, empathy and early unvalued experiences within the family. Age was only correlated with social anxiety. Social anxiety showed a significant and expected correlation with the study variables. The model including fear of compassionate feelings (from other and from oneself) and early unvalued experiences showed to be the best predictor of social anxiety.

This study integrates the contribution of less explored variables, as the fear of compassion and early negative memories, in the understanding of social anxiety in adolescents. Results suggest that these variables may have an important role and should be incorporated in psychological interventions for social anxiety in adolescence.

Quality of Life (QoL) plays a remarkable role in practice and public health policy. However, research on QoL among children and adolescents is still scarce and it seems crucial to develop and validate assessment tools for measuring health-related QoL.

The current study aims to analyse the psychometric properties and validate the Portuguese version of the Youth Quality of Life Instrument (YQOL-R; Patrick et al., 2002). In addition, the convergent and divergent validities are examined with related constructs.

Participants were 507 adolescents, with ages between 12 and 19 years old, attending middle and high schools. Together with YQOL-R, participants also filled out the Kidscreen-27 (Gaspar & Matos, 2008) and the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales (Pais-Ribeiro, Honrado & Leal, 2004).

The Portuguese version of YQOL-R showed a four-factor structure (dimensions: Self, Relationships, Environment, General Quality of Life), similar to the original version. This instrument also revealed a good internal reliability and adequate temporal stability. YQOL-R showed positive correlations with health-related quality of life and negative associations with depression, anxiety and stress symptoms. There were significant gender differences regarding quality of life, with boys reporting higher levels of perceived quality of life than girls.

Future studies should be conducted to ensure these findings among clinical samples or physical conditions. Nevertheless, this study contributes to the set of available instruments for the assessment of QoL among children and adolescents, suggesting that the YQOL-R may be a useful tool for research and health practices in community samples.

To describe and analyze more frequents mental health problems in adolescents with different levels of victimization.

A community sample of 895 adolescents (M = 15.7; SD = 1.3 years old) was subdivided into several groups taking as reference the number of victimizations suffered in the last year, obtained from the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire. Resulting groups were as follows: those adolescents presenting no type of victimization, the group below average, a group above average and the group of poly-victimized adolescents. Mental health problems were identified with the Youth Self Report, analyzing specifically the DSM syndrome scales.

The group of poly-victimized adolescents presented more significant (p<.05) affective, anxious symptomatology with attention and behavior problems, post-traumatic and obssesive compulsive disturbances, even after Bonferroni's post-hoc contrast regarding the other groups. On the other hand, somatic and oppositional defiant problems were perceived with same intensity between the group above average and the poly-victimized group in front of the groups below victimizations average.

Poly-victimization in adolescents is associated to larger symptomatology patterns and mental health problems development.

Although investigation have demonstrated that stimulants are effective medication for the treatment of the symptoms on the ADHD, a commonly described but quite slightly studied side effect of this type of medication, is the effect on the emotional expression of patients.

evaluate the effect of the treatment with Methylphenidate on the affective/emotional expression in children diagnosed with ADHD.

It's a descriptive study of several cases series, from a center and about a unique group, where 'n” will be 15 children diagnosed with ADHD at the University Hospital, who were required beginning treatment with methylphenidate, with a daily dose of at least 0,3mg/Kg. In this study it will be evaluated the emotional expression of the group, according to the scale Expression and Emotion Scale for Children (EESC) making a comparison between the previous moment to the treatment and a subsequent month from its beginning.

The evaluation of the total result of the EESC conducted by the parent didn't show statistically significant differences between scores previously of the treatment and results after a month with it. The dominions (positive emotions, emotional flatness and emotional lability) didn't show differences between both periods of time, nevertheless, the positive emotions showed a tendency of reduction more showy than the rest, without getting to be statistically significant (p=0.0638).

Statistically there haven't been significant changes in the emotional expression of the children caused by the treatment with methylphenidate. Nevertheless, the data show that there is a tendency to an improvement in it.

41.9 % (36) of the teachers believed that children and adolescents with mental disorders may attend mass child garden and the school, 32.6 % (28) didn't agree with that. 37.2 % (32) of the teachers believed that intercourse with a sick child is unlikely to be useful and pleasant for children. Therefore, following an acute problem is the fear of parents to contact a psychiatrist: 28 parents (35%) took their children to psychiatrist by their own initiative, some other professionals (pediatrician, general practician, neurologist or psychologist) encouraged applying to a psychiatrist in 44 cases (55%), 8 parents (10%) asked for advice after strong recommendations from teachers. One of the main signs of psychiatrist's competence for 64 parents (80%) was the appointment of additional medical research techniques. 53 parents (66,3%) were convinced that a doctor for a diagnosis of mental disorder had to examine the child several times.

Suicide in children and adolescents is commonly under-reported and studied. It is an interplay area of multiple static (socio-demographic), and modifiable (impulsivity, psychiatric. morbidities, adverse. life events (ALE),abuse, bullying.) variables.

To assess and identify relative significance of dependent and independent risk factors in youngsters attempting self-inflicted poisoning.

Consecutive recruitment of patients aged 7-18, with normal IQ, admitted to poison control center over 13 continuous months, with self-induced poisoning. All were assessed after guardians’ written informed consent for different risk factors identified for suicidal behavior using appropriate scales (Pediatric Psychiatric Sheet(PPS), Fahmy and Sherbini Social Classification Scale (FSSCS), SRRS-Y, BIS-11, J-TCI, Mini-Kid). Controls with no history of suicidal attempt were matched for age, sex. and socio-demographics among their families.

A120 cases (16.7 years ± 1.6 SD, 91% females) and 100 controls (16.4 years ±1.7 SD, 90.8% females) were assessed. In cases, 90.8% were of low- middle socioeconomic status, 73.5% had previous attempt, average within 10 months, 17.5% planned their attempt, 10.8% had a witnessed attempt. Stressor within 2 days was reported in 75.9%, severe in 40%. Impulsivity was more in its cognitive, planning and motor components (P= 0.001 in each) among attempters. Cases scored more on Novelty seeking, Harm avoidance and Reward dependence than controls who had more persistence, self-directedness and cooperativeness. Attempters had significantly more past medical and psychiatric history (P=0.001, 0.05 respectively), 77.5% had a working psychiatric illness, 2% in controls.

Repeated suicidal attempts were the majority, with impulsivity as a predictive risk, especially if psychiatric morbidity or ALE in youths were encountered.

Electronic technologies (e.g., Internet, cellular phone, social networking sites, instant messaging) influence adolescent sexual behavior in increasingly complicated ways. Although novel technologies affect adult sexual behavior as well, this interface may be particularly complex for adolescents given the biological, neurodevelopmental and psychological changes that characterize this period, and the fact that teenagers are the defining users of these technologies. Adolescents typically possess greater facility with electronic devices than most adults. The ways in which electronic and communication technologies affect adolescent sexual behavior therefore remain poorly understood even as these influences increasingly affect debates about what constitutes 'normal” or atypical adolescent sexual behavior. In turn, the rapid rate of technological development has outpaced the ability of law and society to respond in a reasoned and calculated manner to unforeseen dilemmas that result this nexus.

The aims of this presentation is provide a comprehensive review (following an in-depth analysis of literature) of the current state of empirical knowledge regarding 'normal” sexual development and behaviors among children and adolescents; explore the effects of novel electronic communication technologies on sexual development and behavior among adolescents today; and provide an up to date analysis of current issues pertaining to “sexting” and cyber-bullying.

The ways in which electronic and communication technologies affect adolescent sexual behavior remain poorly understood even as these influences increasingly affect debates about what constitutes 'normal” or atypical adolescent sexual behavior.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental syndromes characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction and imagination. These symptoms are present in the early developmental period, but may not be fully obvious until social demands exceed the child's limited capacities. In spite of its early presenting, this condition is not diagnosed until adult stage. In Japan, many patients with ASD were diagnosed after entering university, however, few treatment options are available. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of group therapy in university students with ASD.

A one –group, pre-intervention-post-intervention design was adapted for this study. All patients with ASD were recruited from Shizuoka University. The group therapy programs consisted of cognitive behavioral therapy and recreational activity. Outcome measures were Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition, Quality of Life Inventory, State Trait Anxiety Inventory and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale.

There were eight participants, five males and three females. Their ages were from 19 years old to 22 years old. All participants had over 90 % of attendance in the six-month group therapy.

These preliminary results suggest that the group therapy can improve social competence for some students with ASD. More research is needed to draw more sturdy conclusions, especially with respect to improvements in quality of life.

The mortality rate in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) is 3-4 times higher than in the general population. This excess mortality is mainly related to suicide risk.

1. – Assess the prevalence of suicidal behavior in patients with BD.

2. – Discuss the risk factors for them.

Our study was a transversal type, descriptive and analytical. It was conducted with 60 patients from the psychiatry consultation of Sfax, meeting the DSM-IV-TR criteria of BD.

For each, we collected the following:

• A record of clinical and socio-demographic data.

• Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview “MINI” version 05 to screen for alcohol abuse / dependence.

• The Barratt impulsiveness scale “BIS-11”.

The average age of patients was 41,3 years (21-63 years). The sex ratio (M / F) was 1,1. 45,5% of patients were single.

The BD was type I in 81.8% of cases and type II in 18.2%. Family history of BD was noted in 56.8% of patients.

56.8% had a high level of impulsiveness. The prevalence of alcohol addictive behavior was 21.9%.

The rate of suicide attempts was 30%. The most used means were: defenestration (38.46%) and hanging (30.76%).

Suicide attempts were correlated with a high degree of impulsivity (p = 0.007) and alcohol addiction (p = 0.029).

Suicide attempts interested almost the third of bipolar patients. Impulsivity seems to be an important factor for increasing suicide risk in BD, with alcohol addiction. Successful clinical management of alcohol use disorders may be critical to reduce this risk in this population.
