Répondre à cette question suppose qu'on puisse définir avec précision ce qu'on entend par « réussite d'une modernisation », et par le mot « pourquoi ». Or, la modernisation est un concept vague. On pourra remarquer que, s'il n'y avait pas, à l'heure actuelle, un succès économique du Japon qui frappe même les plus aveugles des Européens, on ne discuterait guère de la modernité japonaise. Cela implique d'abord que l'élément économique, en particulier industriel, est fondamental dans notre perception de la modernité. Mais comme la notion de modernité a été definie à partir exclusivement de l'expérience européenne ou américaine, on éprouve la tentation de penser que seules les ressemblances entre le Japon et l'Europe sont significatives, et que le Japon (ou l'Europe…) ne saurait avoir sa modernisation particulière. Provisoirement, pour faire le tri dans le passé japonais, on retiendra ici des critères bien connus, déjà repérés en Europe: mobilité, individuation et laïcisation; et on admettra que la recherche de ces critères ne peut se limiter à l'ère Meiji et doit remonter d'une part au moins jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle et d'autre part, comme la modernisation est une adaptation continue à des techniques qui évoluent rapidement, aller jusqu'á nos jours.

The publication of John Rawls' A Theory of Justice in 1972 inaugurated a new era in Anglo-American political theory by providing a sophisticated and complex paradigm of liberal political diagnosis of and prescription for contemporary society; it resulted in a flood of detailed analyses and discussions of Rawls' proposals in the large and in the small, and also brought forth (in the form of Robert Nozick's Anarchy, State and Utopia) a counterblast from the libertarian Right which was of commensurate scope and vigour. In the present decade, however, the challenge to Rawlsian liberalism has taken on a new guise—one which it is the purpose of this paper to explore.

Amongst the many religious groups to be found in the United States, one is remarkable and very little known : the Black Hebrews. This group shares structural characteristics common to many minorities, but is also distinguished by a dual identity derived from the experience of slavery and the cultural mix specific to the New World.

In recent years, a growing literature has claimed that there is a strong and consistent association between the presence of historic missionary societies outside Europe and positive long-term socio-economic outcomes. Yet, most of these studies fail to specify whether this finding is the result of missionary investment in human capital or of local actors stepping up their educational efforts in reaction to missionary activities. This article uses the example of Protestant missionary activity in Ottoman Turkey to separate these two mechanisms. The Ottoman state and the Armenian population responded to missionary incursions by modernizing and expanding their educational efforts. However, after the foundation of the Republic and of modern Turkey, most of the missionary schools were closed and the Armenian population was dramatically reduced. Using the blockage of direct effects, this study confirms the role that indirect effects or emulation has played in Ottoman Turkey. Results show that places with historically heightened competition between missionary schools and native educational institutions are more likely to have a higher income, as measured by night-time light density.

Kurioserweise scheint es heute nötig, den Nachweis zu führen, daß die Theorie der Revolution ein wichtiges Desiderat jeder engagierten Soziologie sein muß: so weit haben wir uns von den Erfahrungsgrundlagen und Denkansätzen der Anfänge der Soziologie entfernt. Für Comte, Tocqueville, Marx und viele Geringere war die Theorie der Revolution ein Kernstück der Soziologie überhaupt; sie standen in der Spannung zwischen der Bewältigung der Revolution des 18. und der Vorhersage derer des 20. Jahrhunderts. Liest man dagegen die Vorträge und Diskussionen des 3. Deutschen Soziologentages aus dem Jahre 1922 zum Thema »Das Wesen der Revolution« (27), dann könnte man geneigt sein, aus der sie beherrschenden Atmosphäre der Unwirklichkeit und Gleichgültigkeit zu schließen, das Problem der Revolution habe nunmehr alle Aktualität verloren. Die Diskussionen des 13. Deutschen Soziologentages 34 Jahre später (»Tradition und Revolution») bestätigen diesen Eindruck aufs Neue (28), und auch international sieht es nicht so aus, als sei das Problem der Revolution besonders brennend. Auf dem Dritten Weltkrongreß für Soziologie — mit dem Generalthema »Sozialer Wandel« — war von Revolution nicht die Rede (24); wahrend des Vierten Weltkongresses 1959 fand zwar eine Diskussion zu diesem Thema statt, doch gehorte sie nicht zum offiziellen Kongreßprogramm (25). Doch — muß man es sagen? — kommt dem Problem der Revolution aus mindestens zwei Gründen auch heute erhebliche Bedeutung zu : Einmal ist, allem Anschein nach und entgegen dem Selbstverständnis westlicher Gesellschaften, unser eigenes Jahrhundert eine Zeit großer Sozialrevolutionen in alien Teilen der Welt. Es vergeht kaum ein Jahr, in dem wir nicht von radikalen und raschen Wandlungen in irgendeinem Lande hören.

La vulnérabilité externe, reflet des fluctuations des prix des produits primaires d'exportation sur les marchés internationaux, a amené de nombreux gouvernements latino-américains à prendre des responsabilités croissantes sur le plan économique, même avant la crise de 1929. En effet, à mesure qu'ils ont pris conscience de la situation de dépendance qui était la leur dans l'economie mondiale, les pays latino-américains ont cherché, de différentes manières, à lutter contre les effets négatifs de ce phénoméne. D'un côté, ils ont essayé de soumettre à une forme quelconque de contrôle leurs rapports é'conomiques et financiers avec l'extérieur; de l'autre ils se sont efforcés d'accroitre l'intégration interne de leurs économies, en limitant leur dépendance ð l'égard du système traditionnel de la division internationale du travail. Le premier type de politique visait surtout ð contrôler les flux financiers, de manière ô limiter les conséquences internes des déséquilibres extérieurs. Le second cherchait à fixer dans chaque pays les ressources qui y faisaient leur apparition et à orienter les investissements vers le marché intérieur. La même politique a presque toujours eu plus d'un objectif ou, en en recherchant un, en a atteint un autre, raison pour laquelle il est plus facile de l'identifier en fonction de l'instrument principal qu'elle a utilisé, généralement de type cambiaire, fiscal ou commercial. Mais dans tous les cas elles ont entrîané un accroissement de l'action de l'État et sont le point de départ des essais de programmation sectorielle.

Viewing a movie can often be a powerful experience, leaving a deep impression. Particularly when that experience is worrying or upsetting, it may challenge people's values. This leads one to question what values movies have, where they acquire them, and whether they are (e.g. inadvertently) making propaganda for violence.

Modes of succession to high office in Africa today present the same problems for study as most other institutions in that continent; we have to analyse and understand both ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ practices. The two terms imply time-depth and it is of course true that we can pinpoint, for example, the recent entry of the extensive electoral procedures which follow a European model, whereas the kind of hereditary system by which offices circulated between segments of royal dynasties was there long before. But today ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ exist side by side and from one standpoint the insistence upon this division carries some dangers if it leads automatically to the idea that, as time goes on, ‘modern’ practice is necessarily going to completely oust ‘traditional’ methods. In the first place, the two systems may continue to operate in different spheres of social life, the ‘traditional’ for local chiefs, the ‘modern’ for national politicians. Even when this is the case, both types of leadership occur within one socio-cultural field, which, however highly differentiated it may be, is bound to modify the behaviour of the interacting individuals, roles and institutions. The mode of selecting an Ashanti chief is certainly not what it was before the advent of first colonial over-rule and secondly independent nationhood. The style of choosing representatives for local and national government is in turn influenced by the norms of chiefship. One continues to modify the other because both exist side by side.

In the course of cultural evolution, both attitudes and beliefs are continuously modified by heritable variation and competitive selection. For Raymond Boudon, this process is exactly the same in the two cases, since in both axiological and practical reasoning consensus depends on a shared acknowledgement that the agreed conclusions are the products of “strong” reasons. His argument is, however, open to objection on psychological and sociological as well as philosophical grounds, and is vulnerable to the traditional rhetorical device known as paradiastole.
