We consider a generalized Fredholm determinant d(z) and a generalized Selberg zeta function ζ(ω)−1 for Axiom A diffeomorphisms of a surface and Axiom A flows on three-dimensional manifolds, respectively. We show that d(z) and ζ(ω)−1 extend to entire functions in the complex plane. That the functions are entire and not only meromorphic is proved by a new method, identifying removable singularities by a change of Markov partitions.

We prove for a large class of compact metric spaces, including those manifolds of dimension at least two, Hilbert cube manifolds, and homogeneous Menger manifolds, that ‘most’ self-homeomorphisms (in the sense of residual set of homeomorphisms) have certain properties. Specifically, if F: X → X is one of these homeomorphisms, then F admits

• a dense, open wandering set;

• a nowhere dense chain recurrent set;

• an infinite collection of attractors (and repellers), each of which has nonempty interior and cannot be reduced to a ‘smallest’ attractor (or ‘largest’ repeller); and an uncountable collection of pairwise disjoint quasi-attractors.

We also discuss the topology of the boundaries of attractors.

We prove: If f(z) is a critically finite rational map which has exactly two critical points and which is not conjugate to a polynomial, then the boundary of every Fatou component of f is a Jordan curve. If f(z) is a hyperbolic critically finite rational map all of whose postcritical points are periodic, then there exists a cycle of Fatou components whose boundaries are Jordan curves. We give examples of critically finite hyperbolic rational maps f with a Fatou component ω satisfying f(ω) = ω and f|∂ω not topologically conjugate to the dynamics of any polynomial on its Julia set.

We show that a C0 minimal action of a semisimple Lie group without compact factors is either locally free or induced from a minimal action of a proper parabolic subgroup. We describe the orbit structure of the action restricted to a maximal compact subgroup, and then apply this to minimal actions in low dimension. We give some examples, applications, and open problems.

Correction to ‘On the classification of some two-dimensional Markov shifts with group structure’ (Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 12 (1992), 823–833)

In this paper we shall give examples of rational maps on the Riemann sphere and also of polynomial interval maps which are transitive but not ergodic with respect to Lebesgue measure. In fact, these maps have two disjoint compact attractors whose attractive basins are ‘intermingled’, each having a positive Lebesgue measure in every open set. In addition, we show that there exists a real bimodal polynomial with Fibonacci dynamics (of the type considered by Branner and Hubbard), whose Julia set is totally disconnected and has positive Lebesgue measure. Finally, we show that there exists a rational map associated to the Newton iteration scheme corresponding to a polynomial whose Julia set has positive Lebesgue measure.

The Hausdorff dimension of closed invariant sets under diffeomorphisms is an interesting concept as it is a measure of their complexity. The theory of holomorphic dynamical systems provides us with many examples of fractal sets and, in particular, a theorem of Ruelle [Ru1] shows that the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set depends real analytically on f if f is a rational function of ℂ and the Julia set J of f is hyperbolic. In this paper we generalize Ruelle's result for complex dimension two and show the real analytic dependence of the Hausdorff dimension of the corresponding Julia sets of hyperbolic Hénon mappings.
