Recently, intensification of both rain-fed and dry-season irrigated agriculture has necessitated widespread use of pesticides in the extensive sub-humid zones of Nigeria. In this region is located over 80% of Nigeria's existing surface area of reservoirs in the country. The majority of these reservoirs were built artificially for a multiplicity of uses among which fisheries and Nature conservation ranked very high.—

You have heard many eloquent arguments in favour of disarmament, but the deliberations of this Assembly have served to show the watching world that in 1982 we are still where we were in 1978—facing the same stark choice of survival or annihilation.

Modern weapons have the deadly capacity not merely to wipe out cities, industries, and even entire populations, but also to destroy the life-giving systems on which we all depend. I am convinced that the need to preserve our shared environment provides the most persuasive argument for nations to stop this dangerously escalating spiral of the arms race.

Owing to their sub-Sahelian climate, the Cape Verde Islands, lying off the coast of West Africa, experience severe problems of soil erosion and surface-water loss. Thus the development of this country has included widescale planting of trees, mainly Prosopis juliflora, and the building of contour walls and small dams. Agroforestry species are being tested for both erosion control and the production of wood and timber. The conservation of native crop species, and the use of integrated pestcontrol, have been given priority in Cape Verde's agricultural development.

Mathematical models predict that a nuclear war could cause widespread reductions in light intensity and temperature. To assess the possible impact of these reductions on lowland tropical rain-forests, we exposed seedlings of three species of the family Moraceae to various combinations of day and night conditions under reduced light. The species represent three stages in tropical rain-forest succession: Cecropia obtusifolia is an early-successional pioneer, Trichospermum mexicanum is a mid-successional tree, and Brosimum alicastrum is a late-successional tree of mature-phase forests.

Von Hippel and von Hippel (1998) suggested that Viagra had the potential to replace an existing demand for certain wildlife species used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Von Hippel and von Hippel (2002) attempted to show that this potential is becoming a reality.

The suggestion is made that Man evolved orthograde posture and bipedal locomotion at the fringe of tropical forest rather than in open savanna. The primary adaptive function of bipedal locomotion was for walking and stalking game from the cover of trees, in the absence of undergrowth. Hairlessness was thermally advantageous when Man emerged from the trees, yet would have imposed no great hardship on our hominid ancestors while they were inside the forest, where the climate was constantly warm. Man's primitive skin-colour was probably pale-brown. It is thought that dark skins were later acquired primarily as a protection against ultraviolet radiation in tropical regions, whereas depigmentation occurred as an adaptation that enhanced the synthesis of calciferol in regions of low light-intensity.

Man's so-called ‘racial’ adaptations occurred when his scavenging and hunter-gathering technology was unable to counter natural selection. Recently, however, he has ceased to respond to environmental feed-back. Unless he begins to do so again soon, degradation of the environment may accelerate beyond the point of no return and our species be doomed.
