Teilia Quarry, from which the fossils described in this paper have been collected, is situated about a quarter of a mile north-east of the village of Gwaenysgor, which is distant about five miles from Rhyl and one from Prestatyn.

The geology of the district has been fully described by Mr G. H. Morton, F.G.S., from whose paper the following notes are compiled:—

A considerable part of North Flintshire is occupied by a great development of limestone, which is generally referred to in writings on the subject as “Carboniferous Limestone.” It forms a tract of hilly ground, some of the higher points rising to a height of over 800 feet. These limestones lie immediately beneath the Cefn-y-Fedw sandstones, and occupy a hollow of considerable extent in Silurian strata.

We naturally regret our failure to convince the British Geological Survey's Southern Uplands team of the nature and importance of the fault which separates Northern and Central Belts, two of the three fundamental divisions of the Southern Uplands terrane which were so brilliantly recognised and defined by their illustrious predecessors (Peach & Home 1899). We welcome the opportunity to clarify the basis of our argument and correct some quite erroneous impressions.

The original design of this research was to determine whether the extract of suprarenal medulla (or its active principle) has the power of antagonising the effects of an overdose of chloroform upon the heart and arterial system. Incidentally the research became extended so as to cover the action of certain other antagonising agents. It further appeared necessary, as the investigation proceeded, to subject the action of chloroform upon the vascular system to renewed study. For although, as the result of numerous recent researches, physiologists are in agreement regarding the general effect of the drug upon the heart, there yet remain various points requiring elucidation both as regards its effect on the heart and on the arteries.

An argument which I had stated against the Huttonian Theory of the Earth, in so far as it relates to the operation of a central heat, was honoured some time ago with a reply by a distinguished Member of the Society. Respect for the opinion of Mr Playfair led me to consider attentively the reasoning he employed; and still feeling some confidence in the grounds on which the original argument rests, I propose to offer a few observations with regard to it. The question farther involves the consideration of the mode in which heat is distributed at the surface of the globe. This, when minutely investigated, presents a very perfect arrangement, by which the escape of caloric is prevented, while its equal distribution is more effectually attained; and the subject, under this point of view, may have some interest, independent of its relation to any controversial discussion.

Two new species of Schramocaris from the Viséan, Lower Carboniferous of Scotland and eastern Canada extend the range and distribution of this crustacean along the northwestern coast of the Rheic Ocean. New species from Glencartholm, southern Scotland and Upperton, New Brunswick, Canada represents the first recognised occurrence of this genus in Scotland and Canada. The Scottish species is here named S. clarksoni; it lacks the rugosity of the carinae of Schramocaris gilljonesorum, but has the same relative position of the carinae, as well as similar characteristics of the pleon, such as the relative lengths of the somites and the shape of the telson. The Canadian species is named Schramocaris matthewi on the basis of the papillations on the cuticle and robust second carinae of the carapace. The deposits at both these localities are that of a shallow marine argillaceous environment, although the Glencartholm deposit contains more lime. Schramocaris has previously only been known from the Avon Group (Hastarian) of the Forest of Dean, England.

In the last decade, the identification of bone fragments by peptide mass fingerprinting or zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry is developing as a powerful tool in Quaternary palaeontology. The sequence of amino acids that make up the bone collagen molecule shows slight variations between taxa, which can be studied by mass spectrometry for taxonomic purposes. This requires reference databases that allow peptide identification. Although the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus Rosenmüller, 1794) is a common component in many European Pleistocene cave sites, no peptide fingerprint taxonomic study has paid special attention to this species up to now. For peptide markers in Ursidae, the most recent proposal is based on collagen obtained from a modern brown bear sample. In this work we attempt to cover this gap by studying bone collagen of cave and brown bear samples from different origins and different chronology, applying matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF). We also performed an in-silico study of ursid bone collagen sequences published in databases. In our results we detected some discrepancies between the peptides obtained from both in silico and MALDI TOF analysis of fossil collagen and those published in the literature, in which we conclude that there are some misidentified peptides. The identification of skeletal remains by means of their peptide fingerprint is proving to be a powerful tool in palaeontology, which will bear greater fruit once the limitations of a technique that is in its initial stages have been overcome.

This study presents an appraisal of the Middle Eocene–Quaternary Dugong Supersequence of the Eucla Basin, offshore southern Australia. It combines details of the rock record with seismic-stratigraphical information, and the resulting stratigraphic framework provides constraints on the nature of the late post-breakup development of the southern Australian continental margin. It is well established that the onshore-to-mid-shelf succession comprises a predominantly aggrading-to-prograding unconformity-bounded succession of carbonate platform deposits; however, our analysis of the outer shelf–upper slope section challenges the widely held view that this shelf-margin wedge represents a distally steepened prograding carbonate ramp primarily modulated by global eustasy. Instead, our results show that the Middle Eocene–Quaternary succession is punctuated by a series of unconformities that reflect a persistent tectonic instability and differential vertical movements throughout the late post-breakup period, the genesis of which is most closely related to tectonic events. Moreover, the upper slope clinoform succession was constructed and shaped predominantly by alongslope processes, and four different contourite drift types are recognised based on their seismic-stratigraphic expression: elongate mounded drift (Quaternary); infill drift (Pliocene); plastered drift (Oligocene); and separated drift (Middle–Upper Eocene). The Quaternary drift – herein termed the ‘Eyre Terrace Drift’ – is a spectacular basin-scale deposit, over 500 m thick and traced for up to 200 km along the upper slope Eyre Terrace. Upslope-migrating sediment waves are associated with this drift. Key sedimentary attributes consistent with a contourite origin include fine-grained sediment, multi-scale gradational bed contacts and pervasive bioturbation. There is also evidence of episodic downslope mass-movement processes ranging from the large-scale Late Neogene Slide, which extends downslope for 15–20 km, to sporadic slumped beds and turbidites recovered in boreholes. The interaction of alongslope and downslope processes indicates a more dynamic sedimentary setting than previously assumed along the outer margin of the Eucla Basin.

A new locality with silicified permineralised plant megafossils is reported from the upper Turonian of Colombiers, Vienne, western France. The plant fossil assemblage consists of Geinitzia reichenbachii (Geinitz) Hollick et Jeffrey and ‘Lomatopteris' superstes Saporta. Whilst G. reichenbachii is a worldwide widespread Cretaceous conifer, ‘L.' superstes is reported in western France for the first time. The latter fossil shows bipinnately compound leaf, marginal teeth, one thick primary vein, pinnate secondary veins and faint, reticulate, narrower veins. Besides its fern-like gross morphology, these characters indicate that it most likely belongs to angiosperms and eudicots. The formation of silicified nodules bearing such fossils from the Cenomanian to the Coniacian of western France was previously attributed to the secondary silicification of limestones during Cenozoic climatic weathering episodes. However, based on both petrography and preservation evidence, we demonstrate that it was an endogenic process contemporaneous to the earliest stages of fossil diagenesis created by palaeoenvironmental and climatic conditions.

The Quadrature of the Conic Sections, and the Computation of Logarithms, are problems of considerable importance, not only in the elements of Mathematics, but also in the higher branches of that science. On this account, every successful attempt to simplify their resolution, as well as any new formulæ which may be found applicable to that purpose, must always be interesting, and must in some measure contribute to the improvement of mathematical knowledge.

Having undertaken to continue the observations on the growth of trees commenced by my father in 1878, and carried on by him with unflagging zeal until a few months before his death in 1882, I give in the present paper the measurements made by him in 1881, which he did not live to publish, and those made in 1882 by myself. I shall also endeavour to point out the conclusions which may be drawn from the whole series of observations, beginning in 1878, arranging them under the heads of—

The common forked setæ which constitute the ventral setal bundles in the Naididæ possess, like the simple setæ of many of the earthworms, a slight swelling on the shaft, the so-called nodulus. The setæ themselves are the principal organs of locomotion, being used as levers, which obtain a hold of the substratum by means of their hooked and forked distal ends; and besides being movable in an anteroposterior direction they are capable of some degree of protrusion and retraction. The position of the nodulus on the shaft is held to regulate the distance to which the seta can be protruded; though it can be retracted so that the nodulus is below the level of the epidermis, it cannot be protruded beyond that degree which brings the nodulus level with the surface.

The phenomena and colours of the soap-bubble have been the subject of more frequent observation than any other facts in science. For nearly two centuries they have afforded amusement and instruction to the young, and have exercised the genius of the most distinguished philosophers. Hook and Newton ascribed the beautiful colours of the soap-bubble to the different degrees of thickness of the attenuated film, and this opinion has been implicitly adopted by every optical writer down to the present day. In the latest and best Treatise on Light, Sir John Herschel expresses the current theory more distinctly than others, when he says, “that the brilliant colours which appear on soap-bubbles consist of a regular succession of hues disposed in the same order, and determined, obviously not by any colour in the medium itself, in which they are formed, or on whose surfaces they appear, but solely by its greater or less thickness.…It is at first uniformly white, but as it grows thinner and thinner, by the subsidence of its particles, colours appear to begin at its top, where thinnest, which grow more and more vivid, and arrange themselves in beautiful horizontal zones about the highest point, as a centre.”

The recently published model of evolution and biogeography and the resulting classification of the Tetraconodontinae (Van der Made 1999) were criticised by Pickford (2001) on eight points. It was claimed that Conohyus giganteus is a suine, and that this ‘radically modifies tetraconodont systematics’. However, Pickford failed to demonstrate that the type specimen is a suine, and even if it were a suine, this would affect only one of over twenty species names; not a radical change of the proposed evolutionary model.

I have thrown together, in this chapter, the ores of several members of a family of the elements, which may be called the family of the magnetics;* and I have also, from its frequent chemical association with iron, placed titanium along with them. No attempt was made by me to analyse the ordinarily-employed iron ores, but only such as, from their apparent purity, or from the excellence of the specimens, appeared to be of mineralogical interest.

The distribution and zonation of Chthamalus stellatus and Balanus balanoides on British coasts is reviewed, and it is shown that the very sheltered waters of Loch Sween and West Loch Tarbert are unusual in that Chthamalus occurs there in greater quantity than in any other sheltered (British) locality, and the upper limit of Chthamalus is consistently higher, relative to other species, than elsewhere in shelter. The lower limit of Chthamalus is generally at a rather high level on these shores even when bare rock occurs below. Balanus balanoides, on the other hand, is often scarce or absent at the same sheltered sites. The physical conditions in the lochs (water temperatures, tides, winds, sunshine, rainfall) and their seasonal variations are examined and it is shown that there probably is a unique succession of environmental factors that would favour Chthamalus and operate against Balanus at critical times of the year. It is suggested that Chthamalus occurs higher than Pelvetia in the lochs because of a greater tolerance of irregular and often prolonged periods of desiccation. The failure of Chthamalus to occupy the middle and lower shore when Balanus is absent indicates that competition between the two barnacles does not alone determine their vertical distribution on the shore. A tentative hypothesis is developed showing how the very local distribution of Chthamalus and the level occupied on the shore might be related to responses of the cyprids to light and to a supposed requirement of emersion during the early stages on the shore.

In the year 1811, when I was occupied in drawing up an article on Burning Instruments for the Edinburgh Encyclopædia, my attention was in a particular manner directed to the construction of Large Lenses, and to the different methods by which they could be combined with plane and spherical mirrors, for the purpose of obtaining an intense heat from the concentration of the solar rays. I was thus led to examine the inventions and contrivances which had been previously proposed by others, for accomplishing the same object; and after giving a historical account of them, I proceeded to describe the improvements and constructions which had occurred to myself.

As the reputed fact of Archimedes having burned the Roman ships engaged in the siege of Syracuse, by concentrating on them the solar rays, has not only been doubted but disbelieved by some of the most eminent scientific men, I shall briefly give the evidence on both sides.

The burning of the ships of Marcellus is mentioned by most of the ancient writers who refer to the machines which Archimedes employed in the defence of his native city, and their statements have been repeated by succeeding authors, without any doubts having been expressed until comparatively recent times. Our earliest authorities on the subject are Diodorus Siculus, Lucian, Galen, Dion, and Pappus.

There is no branch of natural science about which we know so little as that which relates to the structure of crystalline bodies. By assuming the form of an integrant molecule, crystallographers have found no difficulty in building those geometrical solids which minerals and artificial crystals present to our observation. They conceive that these molecules unite by their homologous sides in the formation of the primitive crystal, and by supposing that they arrange themselves in plates on the faces of that crystal, each plate successively diminishing in size by the abstraction of a certain number of these molecules in lines of a given direction,—all the secondary forms of the crystal may be easily deduced.

The present inquiry is closely connected with some of the phenomena presented in golf:—especially the fact that a ball can be “jerked” nearly as far as it can be “driven.” For this, in itself, furnishes a complete proof that the duration of the impact is exceedingly short. But it does not appear that any accurate determination of the duration can be made in this way. Measurements, even of a rude kind, are impracticable under the circumstances.

In 1887 I made a number of preliminary experiments with the view of devising a form of apparatus which should trace a permanent record of the circumstances of impact. I found that it was necessary that one of the two impinging bodies should be fixed:—at least if the apparatus were to be at once simple and manageable. This arrangement gives, of course, a result not directly comparable with the behaviour of a golf-ball. For pressure is applied to one side only, both of ball and of club; but when one of two impinging bodies is fixed it is virtually struck simultaneously on both sides.
