A two-dimensional (2-D) seasonal model has been developed for simulating the transient response of the climate system to the astronomical forcing. The atmosphere is represented by a zonally averaged quasi-geostrophic model which includes accurate treatment of radiative transfer. The atmospheric model interacts with the other components of the climate system (ocean, sea-ice and land surface covered or not by snow and ice) through vertical fluxes of momentum, heat and humidity. The model explicitly incorporates surface energy balances and has snow and sea-ice mass budgets. The vertical profile of the upper-ocean temperature is computed by an interactive mixed-layer model which takes into account the meridional turbulent diffusion of heat. This model is asynchronously coupled to a model which simulates the dynamics of the Greenland, the northern American and the Eurasian ice sheets. Over the last glacial–interglacial cycle, the coupled model simulates climatic changes which are in general agreement with the low frequency part of deep-sea, ice and sea-level records. However, after 6000 yBP, the remaining ice volume of the Greenland and northern American ice sheets is overestimated in the simulation. The simulated climate is sensitive to the initial size of the Greenland ice sheet, to the ice-albedo positive feedback, to the precipitation-altitude negative feedback over the ice sheets, to the albedo of the aging snow and to the insolation increase, particularly at the southern edge of the ice sheets, which is important for their collapse or surge.

Calathopteris heterophylla gen. et sp. nov. is described from a single petrified stem found in a loose block at Oxroad Bay, East Lothian. It is approximately 17 cm long and 2 cm diameter, being clothed with the swollen bases of incomplete petioles, many reflexed, and arranged in a dense 2/5 phyllotactic spiral. In most petioles the vascular bundle becomes U-shaped in transverse section with six abaxial mesarch lobes. Other leaf-traces divide in the inner cortex to form three concentric xylem strands which differentiate as they pass outward to form a median triarch bundle flanked by two tetrarch bundles. The stem possesses a medullated stele in which short wide tracheids occur in the medulla. Similarities between the petioles and those of Calathospermum fimbriatum Barnard are pointed out while those with three bundles were probably trichotomous (and ?microsporangiate) like Diplopteridium teilianum Walton.

The more or less flat-lying sedimentary rocks that build up the plateau country of the northern, central, and eastern parts of Spitsbergen range in age from Downtonian to Tertiary. The rocks with which it is proposed to deal in this paper constitute the basement underlying this sedimentary succession in the east central part of Spitsbergen, in the region at the head, and to the east, of Klaas Billen Bay, the north-eastern branch of the Ice Fiord (Map, fig. I). An extension of these basement rocks is to be found in the mountains east of Wijde Bay, and similar rocks are to be found in other parts of Spitsbergen, notably in the western mountain ranges. Formations up to the Tertiary, as well as the Pre-Devonian, are involved in the folding of these western ranges; but the rocks dealt with in this paper may be designated as older than the oldest unfolded rocks in the country.

The Late Caledonian granites of Donegal are all intruded into metasediments of the Dalradian Supergroup of Neoproterozoic age, which were metamorphosed and deformed during the Grampian Phase of the Caledonian orogeny at c. 470-460 m.y. They were intruded in a singular pulse well after the main tectonic event, apparently peaking at 407-402 m.y.; importantly after the strong collision of Laurentia with Baltica on closure of the Iapetus Ocean. The plutons are mainly made up of granodiorite and granite, and are all ‘I’ type, but different to Cordilleran ‘I’ types of the eastern Pacific margin. Major element chemistry indicates they are high-K calc-alkaline rocks with a large range in SiO2 content. However three of the plutons (Fanad, Thorr, Ardara), have very high Ba and Sr contents, even higher than Mainland Scotland counterparts; they are high Ba-Sr plutons. Three plutons (Barnesmore, Rosses, Trawenagh Bay) are evolved and are low-Ba-Sr types, while one (Main Donegal) has atypical, intermediate characteristics. The origin of the magmas is still much debated; here we suggest slab breakoff on Iapetus Ocean closure accounts for the special compositions of these magmas and the other major features of Late Caledonian granitic magmatism, including the singular intrusion peak and the associated appinite-lamprophyre suite.

The typical species of this small section and the first to be described is P. cuneifolia. Within its compass are three other plants which in their time have been given specific diagnoses but are here regarded as coming more properly into the category of subspecies—P. saxifragifolia, P. hakusanensis, and P. heterodonta. P. cuneifolia, thus interpreted, has a distribution extending from N.E. Siberia to Japan, the Aleutian Islands, and the Alaskan coast. The section contains two other species—P. nipponica which is confined to Japan, and P. suffrutescens from the Sierra Nevada of California, thus widely separated geographically.

A deep borehole drilled at Rookhope in Weardale, Co. Durham in 1960–61 proved the Weardale Granite below Carboniferous sediments at a depth of 390 m; an account of the Carboniferous rocks is presented. The boring commenced in the basal Namurian Great Limestone and entered the Dinantian at the bottom of the limestone at 25 m. Most of the ten Brigantian cyclothems sectioned in the borehole are compound and average 30 m thick. They consist of an initial cycle often more than 20 m thick and overlying minor cycles that are usuallyless than 6 m thick. Each of the cycles, both initial and minor, are coarsening upwards sequences from marine limestone or mudstohe to deltaic and fluvial mudstone, sandstone, seatearth and occasionally a thin coal seam. The underlying Asbian consists of seven cyclothems averaging 8 m thick. By contrast they are simple coarsening upwards sequences similar to the Brigantian initial cycles, but no minor cycles are developed.

Marine fossils are abundant in the majority of cyclothems and are listed against their stratigraphical horizon in the borehole. Special studies of miospores, conodonts and foraminiferans from the borehole are presented. A consensus of biostratigraphical evidence shows that the base of the Carboniferous succession in the borehole is of early Asbian age.

The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, on account of its abundance in the Firth of Forth, and the consequent ease with which it can be obtained from the Newhaven market, is given to the practical classes in the Natural History Laboratory of Edinburgh University for dissection, as an example of the decapodous Crustacea. One day in December last, while I was superintending the work of a class engaged in the study of this animal, one of the students, whose name I have unfortunately forgotten, called my attention to some globular protuberances on the intestine of the specimen he was dissecting. At the time I was unable to answer his questions any further than to say that the protuberances were the cysts of a parasite, and I put the specimen by for subsequent examination. On opening the cysts afterwards I found in them a small white worm, which proved to be a Trematode possessing novel characteristics. In the following paper I shall describe this parasite, and show that it is so distinct from all Trematodes hitherto known as to constitute a new genus. On several occasions I had the pleasure of examining the animal in the company of my friend and former colleague, Mr Duncan Matthews, and some of the points in its structure were first noticed by him.

While the first part of this paper was in course of preparation a search was made through various palæobotanical publications in the hope of meeting with records of Osmundaceous fossils that had hitherto escaped recognition as such. In so doing our attention was at once attracted by the descriptions and figures given by Eichwald in his Lethæa Rossica of some very fine fossils which were held by him to represent the stems of arborescent ferns. Those in which we were particularly interested were Chelepteris gracilis, Eichwald, Sphallopteris Schlechtendalii, Eichwald, Bathypteris rhomboidea, Eichwald, sp., and Anomorrhæa Fischeri, Eichwald. The figures and descriptions of these plants were quite inadequate for the determination of their true affinities; but it must be remembered that at the time when these descriptions were written by Eichwald many structural characters which are now regarded as of paramount importance in determining affinities were not recognised as such, even by botanists. To enable us if possible to clear up these difficulties, we wrote to Mons. Michel Zalessky, geologist on the staff of the Comité géologique, St Petersburg, asking if the types of these specimens were known to be in existence, and if any preparations had been made from them suitable for microscopical examination.

Spire-bearing brachiopods formally comprise four different rhynchonelliform orders. A calcified spiral brachidium (presumably supporting a spirolophe when alive) and variable median fold and sulcus (probably aiding separation of incurrent from excurrent flows) are peculiar characteristics they all share. Inferences regarding feeding current systems for these extinct taxa have long remained controversial. Two rival models (the Williams–Ager model and the Rudwick–Vogel model) have been developed, each of which has gained supporters as well as critics over the years. In this present paper they are both contrasted and reassessed on the basis of available evidence, together with a new approach that combines: (a) a morpho-functional analysis applying the plankton net as a suitable seston-collecting paradigm; (b) a review of actualistic data showing that all extant spirolophes are functionally inhalant (irrespective of water entering the valves laterally or not); (c) an evaluation of known outcomes from flume experiments yielding consistent empirical results where gaping shells are oriented transversally and dorsally upcurrent; and (d) a reappraisal of the distributions of certain epizoobionts and endosymbionts revealing compatible patterns. The evidence thus accumulated supports the main conclusion that, in most groups (with laterally tapering spiralia), the inhalant current was located medially with the exhalant currents on either side; only in atrypides (with centrally to dorsally tapering spiralia) does the reverse situation appear to have occurred.

The genera, which I at present include under the family term Platysomidæ, are the following:—

Redescription of the cranial anatomy of Ariekanerpeton sigalovi (Seymouriamorpha: Discosauriscidae; Lower Permian, Tadzhikistan) highlights new diagnostic features which permit a new skull reconstruction and revised diagnosis. The largest Ariekanerpeton specimens differ from like-sized Discosauriscus, a second member of Discosauriscidae, in showing: oblique anterior margin of tabular ornamented surface; acute, elongate posterolateral corner of supratemporal; postorbital ventrolateral ramus with small anteroventral process and forming oblique suture with jugal dorsomedial ramus; jugal posterior ramus tapering rearward, forming subhorizontal suture with quadratojugal; weak ventral sculpture lateral to pterygoid articular recess; parasphenoid subrhomboidal, with lightly sculptured anterior wedge-like process; more densely arranged denticle rows on top of low radiating ridges on pterygoid palatal ramus. Gill filaments occur in specimens with skull lengths of up to 30 mm. Detailed examination of ontogenetic changes in Ariekanerpeton and comparisons with other seymouriamorphs are presented.

A total of 47 genera, in 80 species, of Mississippian, or Lower Carboniferous, crinoids are evaluated from 61 localities in Scotland based on a modern update of the literature, study of museum collections, and new field work. Among the 80 species, 76 are considered valid, with eight requiring new combinations of genus and species names. In addition, one species is considered a nomen dubium, and three can only be assigned at the generic level. Asbian faunas have a moderate generic richness of 13. Brigantian faunas have the highest generic richness at 40. Arnsbergian faunas have the lowest generic richness at three. There are no Mississippian crinoid faunas in Scotland older than Asbian. The dominant Brigantian crinoid faunas occur in limestones and shales in the shallow shelf marine intervals of Yoredale-style cyclothems. The Asbian faunas occur in shallower, nearshore mudstones and limestones of Yoredale-style cyclothems. The late Viséan (Brigantian) fauna is more similar in overall taxonomic composition to the global record for the Serpukhovian rather than the Viséan. This reflects the establishment of the Late Palaeozoic Crinoid Macroevolutionary Fauna, dominated by advanced cladid crinoids, by the end of the Viséan in Scotland.

Doleritic intrusions known to post-date the obduction of the Ballantrae complex during Arenig times record changing magma provenance during the cooling and serpentinisation of obducted peridotite. There are two groups of dolerites with different petrographical and geochemical characteristics.

The earlier emplaced group, which is subordinate, is characterised by amphibole formed under low metamorphic facies conditions and the virtual absence of Fe–Ti oxides. Chemically these rocks are of primitive tholeiitic character and are similar to modern island-arc basalts. They were derived from a strongly depleted mantle source region. The source region of the later emplaced group, which is predominant, was much less depleted. Clinopyroxene and plagioclase, much of it albitised, are the dominant minerals. Fe–Ti oxides also are common and there are pronounced chilled margins and well-preserved ophitic textures. Although showing mildly alkaline tendencies, these rocks originated from a tholeiitic parental magma of “within-plate” type.

Both groups show evidence of rodingitisation and associated alteration related to serpentinisation of the peridotite. During the metasomatic activity, only some elements were mobile, while Al2O3, total Fe, MgO, TiO2, Cr, Ni, Nb, Y and Zr remained almost constant. Assessment of original magma type and geotectonic environment, and demonstration that both groups of doleritic rocks show the products of fractionation, has relied heavily on data for the apparently immobile elements and on petrographical study which identified those rocks least affected by alteration.

The collection of Hydroids hereafter described was made in the years 1902–4 by the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition ship Scotia, during her cruises in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic seas.

For the opportunity of examining the specimens I am indebted to Mr W. S. Bruce, the energetic leader of the expedition; and I also wish to thank Professor J. Arthur Thomson for much assistance and advice in the course of my work.

The collection, as here described, coutains 41 specimens, of which 33 are referable to 27 known species distributed among 15 genera, some of them being new varieties; while the remainder have required the establishment of 7 new species and 1 new genus. One specimen remains specifically undetermined. Thus there are in all 18 different genera, represented by 35 different species.

The construction of dams across fresh-water rivers supplying Hydro-Electric schemes has raised the problem of providing less costly methods than mechanical screens for preventing migratory fish from entering inlet and outlet tunnels of water turbines. The paper deals with the possibilities of employing electric screens for such purposes, and gives the results of laboratory investigations followed by site experiments under actual working conditions. Items covered in the fundamental research include (a) a study of trout reactions when subjected to various shapes and strengths of electric fields, and the effects of exposure to them, (b) particulars of electrode arrangements and other factors governing the characteristics of electric fields in waters containing different amounts of impurities, (c) the relative efficiencies in stopping and diverting fish swimming with and against water flows, (d) the conditions necessary for attracting fish to positive electrodes, and (e) some observations on incidental experiments with combinations of lights and electric screens, and with mechanical vibrations. Details are included of the actual screens in operation and the efficiencies obtained from them.

In the latter part of the paper a description is given of an original type of automatic electric fish-counter installed in two Hydro-Electric Station fish-passes in the North of Scotland, for integrating the numbers of ascending salmon and descending kelts through a common orifice.

Basic intrusive rocks recently encountered in wells N and NNE of the Shetland Isles are probably parts of a single large sill complex which extends for over 130 km along the edge of the Faeroe-Shetland Trough. The sills intrude thick Mesozoic sediments which almost certainly overlie continental crust but the complex also appears to underlie, and extend beyond the SE edge of, the Faeroes basaltic lava plateau. Petrographic and geochemical analyses of drill core samples recovered from some of these sills reveal that they are of mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) type; an observation which provides evidence regarding the plate tectonic history of this area of the North Atlantic and has major implications for the nature of the continental/oceanic crust transition.

Elements of the Ordovician conodont genus Protopanderodus have been investigated in order to provide a model of reconstruction for its oral apparatus. In total, 4,202 elements from the five named species representing this genus in the Swedish Middle Ordovician are included in this study: P. rectus, P. parvibasis, P. graeai, P. robustus and P. calceatus. The well-preserved specimens were studied in detail for identification of distinct element types and calculations were made to determine element ratios and minimum number of elements in a single apparatus. Three element groups, M, S and P, were recognised for all five species and their relative ratio is indicative of apparatuses consisting of at least 21 elements. However, the number of element types and their distribution varies between the species. The four bicostate species, P. rectus, P. parvibasis, P. graeai and P. robustus, have similar morphological characters and are believed to belong to the same evolutionary lineage. They possessed apparatuses consisting of M, Sa, Sb1, Sb2, Sc, Pa and Pb elements. By contrast, the multicostate species P. calceatus is morphologically different and had an apparatus consisting of M1, M2, Sa, Sb, Sc, “Sd”, Pa, Pb1 and Pb2 elements. These differences indicate that P. calceatus is not so closely related to the other species, possibly representing a separate evolutionary lineage, and may warrant an exclusive generic assignment.

§1. As a preliminary to the establishment of the law in question, it is necessary to state and exemplify another law to which I have elsewhere directed attention, viz.,

THE LAW OF COMPLEMENTARIES.

To every general theorem which takes the form of an identical relation between a number of the minors of a determinant or between the determinant itself and a number of its minors, there corresponds another theorem derivable from the former by merely substituting for every minor its cofactor in the determinant, and then multiplying any term by such a power of the determinant as will make the terms of the same degree.

The mineral, of which I have the honour to lay an account before the Society, was brought to Edinburgh in considerable quantity about six years ago by a dealer in fossils, though indeed it had found its way, long before this period, into one or two collections.

By some it was mistaken for fluor. Its great specific gravity, its fibrous appearance, and its quality of forming an insoluble substance with sulphuric acid, made it generally be received as the native carbonate of barytes. From a few experiments, I was led at that time to entertain some doubt of its being any form of barytes ; and for several years, when I filled the chemical chair in the University of Glasgow, I used, when I exhibited the mineral itself, to mention in my lectures such of its properties as I had discovered, and which indicated that it did not belong to the barytic genus.
