Twelve specimens of early Toarcian Mecoptera and Diptera from the vicinity of Wolfsburg were investigated for the present study. The material was found during house building activities in the 1980s at the locality Große Kley in Mörse, an urban district of the city of Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. The specimens were found in calcareous nodules of the Harpoceras falciferum Zone that occur within the Liassic black shales (Posidonia shale). Six specimens of Mecoptera, five belonging to the family Orthophlebiidae and one belonging to the Bittacidae, and six representatives of the following Diptera families were identified: Ptychopteridae, Limoniidae, Anisopodidae and the superfamily Mycetophiloidea. The fossil fauna of Wolfsburg is similar to that of other early Toarcian sites in Germany, described by Handlirsch (1906, 1939), Bode (1905, 1953) and Ansorge (1996) from Braunschweig, Dobbertin and Grimmen. Two new species are described, Mesorhyphusulrichi sp. nov. (Anisopodidae) and Archipleciomima germanica sp. nov. (Mycetophiloidea).

For many years geologists have recognised the occurrence of at least two boulder-clays in the British Islands and the corresponding latitudes of the Continent. It is no longer doubted that these are the products of two separate and distinct glacial epochs. This has been demonstrated by the appearance of intercalated deposits of terrestrial, freshwater, or, as the case may be, marine origin. Such interglacial accumulations have been met with again and again in Britain, and they have likewise been detected at many places on the Continent, between the border of the North Sea and the heart of Russia. Their organic contents indicate in some cases cold climatic conditions; in others, they imply a climate not less temperate or even more genial than that which now obtains in the regions where they occur. Nor are such interglacial beds confined to northern and north-western Europe. In the Alpine Lands of the central and southern regions of our Continent they are equally well developed. Impressed by the growing strength of the evidence, it is no wonder that geologists, after a season of doubt, should at last agree in the conclusion that the glacial conditions of the Pleistocene period were interrupted by at least one protracted interglacial epoch. Not a few observers go further, and maintain that the evidence indicates more than this. They hold that three or even more glacial epochs supervened in Pleistocene times. This is the conclusion I reached many years ago, and I now purpose reviewing the evidence which has accumulated since then, in order to show how far it goes to support that conclusion.

At the end of 1886 a method occurred to me of rapidly recording the positions of the lines of the solar spectrum, which I thought might be used with advantage for determining the faint “Telluric dry-gas lines” near D, mentioned in Professor Piazzi Smyth's maps of The Visual Solar Spectrum in 1884. The fundamental idea of the recording apparatus is that of magnifying by some mechanical means the motion of the grating, or prism, to such an extent that it can be recorded on a continuous fillet of paper. The viewing telescope being then firmly clamped, the exact positions of the grating can be pricked off on the strip of paper as the lines are successively brought to the fixed cross in the field of view.

For the satisfactory use of the method two conditions suggest themselves as desirable. First, the punctures should not be less than a good-sized pin hole, and the interval between the closest lines, which the spectroscope is able to separate, should be represented on the paper strip by a space of several tenths of an inch.

In a paper which I had the honour of submitting to the Society, at the end of last session, I gave a detailed account of the effects of mechanical compression and dilatation, in communicating to glass and other uncrystallised bodies, all the properties of doubly refracting crystals. I had at that time attempted, without success, to alter the polarising structure of doubly refracting crystals, although I applied the force of powerful screws to Topaz, Rock-crystal, and Calcareous spar. All the specimens which I employed were crushed to pieces by the pressure, but exhibited no traces of the coloured rings when exposed to polarised light.

Each piece of data is valuable for unearthing the earliest history of tetrapod origin. Despite frequently incomplete preservation, each skeletal element provides important information on the morphology, phylogeny and faunistic diversity of early tetrapodomorphs. We describe here new and earlier collected material from the fossil vertebrate site Yam-Tesovo on the Oredezh River (Leningrad Region, northwestern Russia) in the deposits of the Yam-Tesovo Formation within the Amata Regional Stage (?lowermost Frasnian, Upper Devonian). Upon similarity of their dermal ornamentation, two mandibular fragments are suggested to belong to the new tetrapodomorph taxon Rubrognathuskuleshovi n. gen. et sp. This species demonstrates a general ‘elpistostegalian' morphological pattern with some early tetrapod characters. The new taxon is characterised by an almost closed intercoronoid fossa, a prearticular that is strongly convex in section and bearing small teeth along its dorsal margin, low vertical coronoid laminae and coronoid fangs that enter the coronoid tooth row. The mandibular canal runs partly in open groove or opens to the surface by a row of large pores. The dermal ornament consists of a network of small ridges forming tubercles in the nodes. The postfrontal assigned to Tetrapodomorpha shows a ‘tetrapod-like' pits-and-ridges sculpturing and a supraorbital ridge characteristic of early tetrapods as well as ‘elpistostegalians'. Its long posterolateral bone margin demonstrates a lateral projection similar to that in Tiktaalik and unknown in other ‘elpistostegalians' and early tetrapods. An unusually flattened vomer is doubtfully related to the tetrapodomorph genus Livoniana Ahlberg, Lukševičs & Mark-Kurik, 2000, based upon characteristic multiple tooth rows. Teeth in rows decrease labially and show no clearly enlarged fang pairs. New finds of the last two decades present the earliest records of some tetrapod characters in non-limbed tetrapodomorphs. This challenges previous hypotheses on the origin of tetrapods.

§ 1. The general problem in elasticity, as usually presented for solution, supposes the elastic substance to pass initially from a state without strain. But important cases exist where it must be conceived to start from a state already under considerable stress. When this is the case, the constitution of the solid undergoes great change, as is shown by the fact that strained glass loses its isotropic property, and becomes doubly refractive. This subject was long ago attacked by Cauchy, who, by means of the theory of molecular actions, deduced the existence, in the expressions for the stresses due to the secondary strains, of terms proportional to the initial or primary stresses. The problem has been since discussed by MM. De St Venant and Boussinesq, who have applied to it Green's expression for the energy stored up during the strain. But the question, in their hands, still retains traces of Cauchy's hypothetical element, inasmuch as their expression for the potential energy was deduced by means of the molecular theory. M. De St Venant even considers it a strong argument for the truth of the latter, that it is indispensable in the discussion of this problem. These authors have also failed to see in what way the remaining part of the potential depends on the original strain.

In the month of November 1830, a small portion of a magnificent fossil stem was discovered in the quarry of Craigleith, in this vicinity, and more and more of it was brought into view as the working of the quarry proceeded.

In December following, I communicated to the Natural History Society of Northumberland a description of that part of the petrifaction which had then been uncovered. This description will appear in their Transactions.

At that period a considerable part of the stem had been brought into view, and since that time the remaining portion, and the roots, have been exposed.

Following the identification of grey quartz–albite–chlorite–calcite–muscovite rocks in Meso- to Neo-proterozoic sequences in Scotland as metamorphosed tuffs of intermediate composition, it has been shown that this lithology will generate calc-silicate rocks at higher metamorphic grades. Both rock types occur as thin beds with sharp contacts with their host, occur as multiple beds in isolated suites, and share chemical compositions suggestive of volcanic sources with tholeiitic andesite affinities. The failure to recognise calc-silicate rocks as tuffs might explain the apparent scarcity of volcanogenic material through c.220 million years of early Earth history in Scotland.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh having taken great interest in meteorological observations, it has occurred to me, that the accompanying Meteorological Journals would be acceptable to the Society. I therefore transmit them, in the hope that they may be of some service, in promoting the laudable object of the Society, the science of meteorology.

These journals include a period of twenty-four years, and were kept by the late Mr Pitt of Carlisle, who was long a careful and accurate observer of many atmospherical phenomena. Mr Pitt did not avail himself of the new instruments that are used in meteorology, but understood well the nature and application of those he employed. The thermometer, barometer, and rain-gauge, were the instruments he made use of, and they are probably more important than any other. For many years Mr Pitt had no particular occupation, and meteorology was his hobby. He devoted a great portion of his time to astronomical and meteorological observations, took great delight in keeping his journals, and was scrupulously accurate. From my personal knowledge of his diligence, of his habits of making correct observations, and the systematic fidelity with which he recorded them, I think I can with great safety vouch for the accuracy of the statements contained in his journals.

Geochemical and related studies have been made of near-surface sediments from the River Clyde estuary and adjoining areas, extending from Glasgow to the N, and W as far as the Holy Loch on the W coast of Scotland, UK. Multibeam echosounder, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic data, taken with core information, indicate that a shallow layer of modern sediment, often less than a metre thick, rests on earlier glacial and post-glacial sediments. The offshore Quaternary history can be aligned with onshore sequences, with the recognition of buried drumlins, settlement of muds from quieter water, probably behind an ice dam, and later tidal delta deposits. The geochemistry of contaminants within the cores also indicates shallow contaminated sediments, often resting on pristine pre-industrial deposits at depths less than 1m. The distribution of different contaminants with depth in the sediment, such as Pb (and Pb isotopes), organics and radionuclides, allow chronologies of contamination from different sources to be suggested. Dating was also attempted using microfossils, radiocarbon and 210Pb, but with limited success. Some of the spatial distribution of contaminants in the surface sediments can be related to grain-size variations. Contaminants are highest, both in absolute terms and in enrichment relative to the natural background, in the urban and inner estuary and in the Holy Loch, reflecting the concentration of industrial activity.

In the series of chapters of which the present is the first, I purpose to submit the results of an analytical examination of all the minerals of Scotland whose composition appeared doubtful; of such as had not previously been examined; or of such as appeared in any way to be of special geologic interest.

After having for many years felt with Professor Tait the want of a word “to express the Availability for work of the heat in a given magazine, a term for that possession the waste of which is called Dissipation” I now suggest the word Motivity to supply this want.

In my paper on the “Restoration of Energy from an Unequally Heated Space,” published in the Philosophical Magazine for January 1853, I gave the following expression for the amount of “mechanical energy” derivable from a body B, given with its different parts at different temperatures, by the equalisation of its temperature throughout to one common temperature T, by means of perfect thermodynamic engines,—

where t denotes the temperature of any point x, y, z of the body; c the thermal capacity of the body's substance at that point and that temperature; J, Joule's equivalent; and μ, Carnot's function of the temperature t.

The object of this paper is twofold: in the first place, to classify and sytematise vector differential equations; and in the second place, to show the applicability of quaternions to the theory of differential equations. So far as I am aware, the only paper of importance on the subject is one by Tait. He, however, deals only with simple cases.

In the classification of forms I have followed in general the treatment adopted by Forsyth. Reference will also occasionally be made to Jordan. In what follows the order of the highest occurring differential coefficient will be called the rank of the equation; while the order of the equation will be used, as usual, to denote the order of the equivalent normal system.

Some years ago I proposed, as decisive of the question which has been the subject of controversy on the nature of Oxymuriatic and Muriatic Acids, the experiment of procuring water from muriate of ammonia, formed by the combination of dry ammoniacal and muriatic acid gases. Muriatic acid gas being the sole product of the mutual action of oxymuriatic gas and hydrogen, it follows, that if oxymuriatic gas contain oxygen, muriatic acid gas must contain combined water; while, if the former be a simple body, the latter must be the real acid, free from water.

Section VI.—A Review of the Fundamental Principles of the Mechanical Theory of Heat; with Remarks on the Thermic Phenomena of Currents of Elastic Fluids, as illustrating those Principles.

(Article 46.) I have been induced to write this Section, in continuation of a paper on the Mechanical Action of Heat, by the publication (in the Philosophical Magazine for December 1852, Supplementary Number) of a series of experiments by Mr Joule and Professor William Thomson, on the Thermal Effects experienced by Air in rushing through small Apertures. Although those authors express an intention to continue the experiments on a large scale, so as to obtain more precise results; yet the results already obtained are sufficient to constitute the first step towards the experimental determination of that most important function in the theory of the mechanical action of heat, which has received the name of Carnot's Function.

The sample of the remarkable deposit of Diatomite, upon which the subjoined observations have been made, was forwarded to me some time ago by William Morrison, Esq., of the Academy, Dingwall, through my friend Mr John Gunn. With the exception of a brief notice in the newspapers soon after the discovery of the deposit by Mr Morrison a few months ago, and a paper entitled “On some New Localities for the Mineral Diatomite, with Notes on the Chemical Composition of the Specimens exhibited,” in the Mineralogical Magazine and Journal of the Mineralogical Society, vol. vii. No. 32, pp. 30–34, July 1886, by W. Ivison Macadam, F.C.S., F.I.C., Professor of Chemistry, New Veterinary College, Edinburgh, no statistics have been published in connection with the deposit, nor has any account hitherto been given of the Diatomaceœ which play so prominent a part in its composition.

The discoverer of Nova Aurigæ is the Rev Thomas D. Anderson of Edinburgh, D.Sc. in Classical Philology. Dr Anderson is “almost certain” that he saw the star at 2 a.m. on January 24 of this year; it was then slightly brighter than χ Aurigæ. Unfortunately, he mistook it for 26 Aurigæ, which it precedes by about 6m 39s, merely remarking to himself that the star was brighter than he had previously thought it to be. Twice in the following week he made the same observation at about the same hour of the night. At last, on the morning of January 31, it flashed upon him that, after all, the star was not 26 Aurigæ, and that 26 Aurigæ had a much greater right ascension. He consulted a small star-map, and the discovety was made. Regretting that he had not earlier compared the map with the heavens, and thinking that the star might be well known to astronomers, Dr Anderson wrote an anonymous postcard to me on the same morning bearing the words:—“Nova in Auriga. In Milky Way, about two degrees south of χ Aurigæ, preceding 26 Aurigæ. Fifth magnitude, slightly brighter than χ.” I may add that Dr Anderson's plant consists of a small hand spyglass adapted to astronomical purposes by removing the front pair of lenses from the eyepiece. In this state it magnifies about ten times, and, of course, gives inverted images. Dr Anderson hopes that amateurs, although provided with only the most modest appliances, may, by his unexpected success, be induced to persevere in their observations.
