An appealing interpretation of Aristotle's moral psychology argues that character virtue sets the goal of the good life. On that view, practical wisdom or phronēsis supplies only the means toward the end that is grasped by the character virtues. Yet, this view has trouble accounting for the supremacy of the contemplative life, which is clearly the best life in the paradigmatic or strict sense for Aristotle. In this paper, I argue that the intellect plays a role for Aristotle in realizing the priority of the contemplative life and integrating it into our practical lives as a whole.

This article examines Confucius’ ideas of moral peace (an 安) and moral pleasure (le 樂) in the Analects. It argues that an and le are two correlated aspects of a self-cultivated state of being (jing-jie 境界) that is grounded on practising benevolence or human-heartedness (ren 仁) and on following the Way (dao 道). The state of an-le involves not only one's reason (i.e., knowing ren and dao) and one's will (i.e., willing ren and dao), but also one's love or ‘emotional liking’ (hào 好) with respect to the practice of ren and dao. It is a state that resembles Kant's idea of intellectual contentment but, pace Philip Ivanhoe's recent interpretation of Confucius, it is different from Aristotle's concepts of pleasure and eudaimonia.

Cet article souligne l'originalité et la pertinence des premiers travaux de Mikel Dufrenne (notamment publiés entre 1946 et 1953) pour les sciences humaines contemporaines. Sous l'influence de Georges Gurvitch, Dufrenne s'est en effet intéressé de près à l'anthropologie culturelle américaine et notamment au concept de « personnalité de base » d'Abram Kardiner, auquel il tente de donner une consistance philosophique à partir, d'une part, de la tradition transcendantale kantienne et, d'autre part, de la théorie du Mitsein heideggérienne. Nous montrons que ce projet se heurte à la question proprement psychologique de l'historicité des catégories de l'expérience.

Dans cet article, nous étudions l'axiologie des techniques des discours écologistes de la décroissance à l'aune de celle du philosophe français Gilbert Simondon. Cette articulation fertile permet de montrer, premièrement, que les discours de la décroissance n’évaluent les techniques qu’à partir de leurs usages ; deuxièmement, elle explique pourquoi une telle axiologie, praxéologique plutôt que technologique, est incapable d'influer sur le progrès technique. À partir de Simondon, nous montrons notamment que la pensée de la décroissance ignore la distinction entre information et énergie au sein des réalités techniques, distinction pourtant nécessaire si l'on souhaite relier l’étude des techniques et l’écologie de façon adéquate et constructive.

Whether seen after a vehement denunciation of one's former values or a subtle change of heart, it is often thought that significant change to one's evaluative character could undermine responsibility for past wrongdoing. In this article, I explore this intuition by analyzing Angela Smith's concept of “responsibility as answerability.” I introduce an alteration/replacement distinction to define the limits of answerability over time. These limits are then further qualified by drawing on Delia Graff's work on Sorites type cases to argue that persons are answerable for past wrongdoing if they remain “saliently similar” in some relevant respects

The extant attempts in the literature to refute the greatest difficulty argument in the Parmenides have focused on denying the parallelism between the pros relations among Forms and those among particulars. However, these attempts are unsatisfactory, for the argument can reach its conclusion that we cannot know any Forms without relying on this parallelism. I argue that a more effective strategy is to deny the more essential premise that the knowledge-object relation is a pros relation. This premise is false because pros relations require definitional and ontological codependence between the relata, and the knowledge-object relation does not satisfy this reciprocity condition.

In this article, I examine whether Spinoza's account of blessedness can be identified with a contemplative ideal in the Aristotelian tradition. I first introduce the main features of the Aristotelian life of contemplation and its difference from the life of practically oriented virtues — a difference that is grounded in Aristotle's distinction between praxis and theoria. In highlighting the commonalities between Spinoza's two kinds of adequate cognition — that is, intuitive knowledge and reason — I show that there is no room for a similar distinction in Spinoza, which will enable us to identify intuitive knowledge and its attendant blessedness exclusively with the theoretical activity.

J'analyse la façon dont Bergson caractérise la logique tel un organe de simplification, de dissimulation, d'ordonnance, de limitation, de systématisation, comme habitude de pensée et comme ontologie foncière. Partout, la logique semble la prérogative de l'entendement et inapte à s'appliquer à la durée, voire à la réalité elle-même. Pour sortir d'un tel dualisme, je montre que Bergson conçoit une logique de l'absurde et de l'imagination, avec le rêve, la folie et le comique, laquelle transmute la logique dans le domaine du pathologique et de l'art littéraire, et offre à l'image une seconde gloire.

There are no qualia. The phenomenological difference between seeing and visualizing something is that the propositions which the experient begins to believe in the first case are only entertained in the second. We can know what it's like to be a bat by knowing that their echolocation informs them non-inferentially of the shapes, sizes, and directional distances away of nearby surfaces. The terms for secondary qualities like colours, though, are names of the type-properties they designate, tracing back causally to a verbal ‘baptism,’ and so experients don't know the character of colour experiences until they study brain physiology.

Comment concevoir la généalogie de l’État sans réduire les sociétés tribales au statut d'ancêtres des sociétés étatiques ? À travers cette question, c'est la généalogie du pouvoir politique qui est en jeu. Chez Ibn Khaldûn, le pouvoir fait partie intégrante d'une ontologie qui ancre le politique dans le biologique. Lorsque Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari butent sur la séparation radicale entre les sociétés à État et sans État chez Pierre Clastres, ils empruntent à Ibn Khaldûn le concept d'esprit de corps qui leur permet de poser la relation entre les États et leur dehors. Il s'agira pour nous de dégager une anthropologie du pouvoir chez Ibn Khaldûn afin de mieux comprendre le rôle qu'il joue dans Mille Plateaux de Deleuze et Guattari.

Jean-Marc Ferry objectait à Cornelius Castoriadis que sa philosophie repose sur une décision ontologique arbitraire transgressant les limites de la critique kantienne de la raison. Dans cet article, je réponds à cette objection en commentant l'opération méthodologique sur laquelle repose l'ontologie de Castoriadis : l’élucidation. Je montre qu'elle ne dépasse pas les limites prescrites par la finitude kantienne et qu'elle lui permet de justifier ses concepts ontologiques. J'explique ensuite dans quelle mesure on peut qualifier la méthode de Castoriadis de « constructivisme enraciné » et quel est son apport pour les théories philosophiques constructivistes.
