We extend Rumely's local-global principle (as refined by Cantor, Roquette, and the author, i.e. with local splitting conditions) to the case of algebraic stacks, in Artin's sense, over rings of (S-)integers of global fields. The nongeometrically connected case is also taken into account, as well as (in some instances) the case where local conditions are imposed at all places.

We show that the vanishing order of a non-zero vector field at a generic point of a smooth Fano variety of Picard number 1 cannot exceed the dimension of the Fano variety. Furthermore, if there exist only finitely many rational curves of minimal degree through a generic point of the Fano variety, we show that a non-zero vector field cannot vanish at a generic point of the Fano variety.

For any Riemannian foliation $\cal F$ on a closed manifold M with an arbitrary bundle-like metric, leafwise heat flow of differential forms is proved to preserve smoothness on M at infinite time. This result and its proof have consequences about the space of bundle-like metrics on M, about the dimension of the space of leafwise harmonic forms, and mainly about the second term of the differentiable spectral sequence of $\cal F$.

We prove that the Veronese embedding φ$_{\cal O \Bbb P}$n(d):$\Bbb P$n$\hookrightarrow \Bbb P$N with n[ges ]2, d[ges ]3 does not satisfy property Np (according to Green and Lazarsfeld) if p[ges ]3d−2. We make the conjecture that also the converse holds. This is true for n=2 and for n=d=3.

If G is a semisimple Lie group and (π, $\cal H$) an irreducible unitary representation of G with square integrable matrix coefficients, then there exists a number d(π) such that ($\forall$v, v′, w, w′ ∈ $\cal H$) 1/d(π) 〈v, v′〉 〈w′, w〉 = ∫G 〈π(g).v,w〉 $\overline$ 〈π(g).v′.w′〉 dμG(g). The constant d(π) is called the formal dimension of (π, $\cal H$) and was computed by Harish-Chandra in [HC56, 66]. If now H\G is a semisimple symmetric space and (π, $\cal H$) an irreducible H-spherical unitary (π, $\cal H$) belonging to the holomorphic discrete series of H\G, then one can define a formal dimension d(π) in an analogous manner. In this paper we compute d(π) for these classes of representations.

We study the relationship between the equations defining a projective variety and properties of its secant varieties. In particular, we use information about the syzygies among the defining equations to derive smoothness and normality statements about SecX and also to obtain information about linear systems on the blow up of projective space along a variety X. We use these results to geometrically construct, for varieties of arbitrary dimension, a flip first described in the case of curves by M. Thaddeus via Geometric Invariant Theory.

Let k be a perfect field with cohomological dimension [les ] 2. Serre's conjecture II claims that the Galois cohomology set H1(k,G) is trivial for any simply connected semi-simple algebraic G/k and this conjecture is known for groups of type 1An after Merkurjev–Suslin and for classical groups and groups of type F4 and G2 after Bayer–Parimala. For any maximal torus T of G/k, we study the map H1(k, T) → H1(k, G) using an induction process on the type of the groups, and it yields conjecture II for all quasi-split simply connected absolutely almost k-simple groups with type distinct from E8. We also have partial results for E8 and for some twisted forms of simply connected quasi-split groups. In particular, this method gives a new proof of Hasse principle for quasi-split groups over number fields including the E8-case, which is based on the Galois cohomology of maximal tori of such groups.

In this paper, we introduce a new way of studying derivatives of L-functions of cusp forms by associating to them cocycles analogous, in function, to the period polynomial. The main result gives a description of the effect of Hecke operators on these cocycles.

Let R be a homogeneous ring over an infinite field, I⊂R a homogeneous ideal, and $\frak a$⊂I an ideal generated by s forms of degrees d1,…,ds so that codim($\frak a$:I)[ges ]s. We give broad conditions for when the Hilbert function of R/$\frak a$ or of R/($\frak a$:I) is determined by I and the degrees d1,…,ds. These conditions are expressed in terms of residual intersections of I, culminating in the notion of residually S2 ideals. We prove that the residually S2 property is implied by the vanishing of certain Ext modules and deduce that generic projections tend to produce ideals with this property.

We consider smooth algebraic varieties with ample either canonical or anticanonical sheaf. We prove that such a variety is uniquely determined by its derived category of coherent sheaves. We also calculate the group of exact autoequivalences for these categories. The technics of ample sequences in Abelian categories is used.

The moduli spaces of Calabi–Yau threefolds are conjectured to be connected by the combination of birational contraction maps and flat deformations. In this context, it is important to calculate dim Def(X) from dim Def(˜X) in terms of certain geometric information of f, when we are given a birational morphism f:˜X→X from a smooth Calabi–Yau threefold ˜X to a singular Calabi–Yau threefold X. A typical case of this problem is a conjecture of Morrison-Seiberg which originally came from physics. In this paper we give a mathematical proof to this conjecture. Moreover, by using output of this conjecture, we prove that certain Calabi–Yau threefolds with nonisolated singularities have flat deformations to smooth Calabi–Yau threefolds. We shall use invariants of singularities closely related to Du Bois's work to calculate dim Def(X) from dim Def(˜X).

We obtain a necessary condition for a cohomology class on a compact locally symmetric space S(Γ)=Γ\X (a quotient of a symmetric space X of the non-compact type by a cocompact arithmetic subgroup Γ of isometries of X) to restrict non-trivially to a compact locally symmetric subspace SH(Γ)=Δ\Y of Γ\X. The restriction is in a ‘virtual’ sense, i.e. it is the restriction of possibly a translate of the cohomology class under a Hecke correspondence. As a consequence we deduce that when X and Y are the unit balls in $\Bbb C$n and $\Bbb C$m, then low degree cohomology classes on the variety S(Γ) restrict non-trivially to the subvariety SH(Γ); this proves a conjecture of M. Harris and J-S. Li. We also deduce the non-vanishing of cup-products of cohomology classes for the variety S(Γ).

Given a quasi-projective complex variety X and a projective variety Y, one may endow the set of morphisms, Mor(X, Y), from X to Y with the natural structure of a topological space. We introduce a convenient technique (namely, the notion of a functor on the category of ‘smooth curves’) for studying these function complexes and for forming continuous pairings of such. Building on this technique, we establish several results, including (1) the existence of cap and join product pairings in topological cycle theory; (2) the agreement of cup product and intersection product for topological cycle theory; (3) the agreement of the motivic cohomology cup product with morphic cohomology cup product; and (4) the Whitney sum formula for the Chern classes in morphic cohomology of vector bundles.

In this paper, using the gluing formula of Gromov–Witten invariants for symplectic cutting developed by Li and Ruan, we established some relations between Gromov–Witten invariants of a semipositive symplectic manifold M and its blow-ups along a smooth surface.

We will clarify the microlocal structure of the vanishing cycle of the solution complexes to $\cal D$-modules. In particular, we find that the object introduced by D'Agnolo and Schapira is a kind of the direct product (with a monodromy structure) of the sheaf of holomorphic microfunctions. By this result, a totally new proof (that does not involve the use of the theory of microlocal inverse image) of the theorem of D'Agnolo and Schapira will be given. We also give an application to the ramified Cauchy problems with growth conditions, i.e., the problems in the Nilsson class functions of Deligne.

We prove that the Sebastiani–Thom isomorphism for Milnor fibres and their monodromies exists as a natural isomorphism between vanishing cycles in the derived category.
