We construct families of hyperelliptic curves over ${\mathbb Q}$ of arbitrary genus g with (at least) g integral elements in K2. We also verify the Beilinson conjectures about K2 numerically for several curves with g = 2, 3, 4 and 5. The first few sections of the paper also provide an elementary introduction to the Beilinson conjectures for K2 of curves.

It is shown that the Steinitz invariants of the cubic extensions of a number field are uniformly distributed in the class group when the cubic extensions are ordered by the ideal norm of their relative discriminants. This remains true even if the extensions are restricted by specifying their splitting type at a finite number of places. The same statement is also proved for quadratic extensions.

Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus $g > 1$ over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. This paper is a study of a natural stratification, defined by the absolute Frobenius morphism of X, on the moduli space of vector bundles. In characteristic two, there is a complete classification of semi-stable bundles of rank 2 which are destabilized by Frobenius pull-back. We also show that these strata are irreducible and obtain their respective dimensions. In particular, the dimension of the locus of bundles of rank two which are destabilized by Frobenius is $3g-4$. These Frobenius destabilized bundles also exist in characteristics two, three and five with ranks 4, 3 and 5, respectively. Finally, there is a connection between (pre)-opers and Frobenius destabilized bundles. This allows an interpretation of some of the above results in terms of pre-opers and provides a mechanism for constructing Frobenius destabilized bundles in large characteristics.

This paper is devoted to the proof of two results. The first was conjectured in 1994 by the author. It concerns the identity, under certain assumptions, of the universal deformation ring of $p$-nearly ordinary Galois representations and a local component of the universal nearly ordinary Hecke algebra in the sense of Hida. The other, which relies on the first, concerns the modularity of certain abelian surfaces. More precisely, one can associate to certain irreducible abelian surfaces defined over the rationals overconvergent $p$-adic cusp eigenforms. The question of whether these forms are classical is not studied in this paper.

We obtain several determinant evaluations, related to affine root systems, which provide elliptic extensions of Weyl denominator formulas. Some of these are new, also in the polynomial special case, while others yield new proofs of the Macdonald identities for the seven infinite families of irreducible reduced affine root systems.

In this paper we prove a formula relating the Faltings height of an abelian variety $A$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ and the Néron–Tate height of a theta divisor on $A$.

We introduce the notion of the boundary motive of a scheme X over a perfect field. By definition, it measures the difference between the motive ${\mathop{M_{\rm gm}}\nolimits} (X)$ and the motive with compact support ${\mathop{M_{\rm gm}^{\rm c}}\nolimits}(X)$, as defined and studied by Voevodsky et al. in Cycles, transfers, and motivic homology theories (Annals of Mathematics Studies, vol. 143 (Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ, 2000)). We develop three tools to compute the boundary motive in terms of the geometry of a compactification of X: co-localization; invariance under abstract blow-up; and analytical invariance. We then prove auto-duality of the boundary motive of a smooth scheme X. As a formal consequence of this, and of co-localization, we obtain a fourth computational tool, namely localization for the\break boundary motive. In a sequel to this work (J. Wildeshaus, On the boundary motive of a Shimura variety, Prépublications du Laboratoire d'Analyse, Géométrie et Applications de l'Université Paris 13, no. 2004-23), these tools will be applied to Shimura varieties.

Let K be the function field of a connected regular scheme S of dimension 1, and let $f : X\to Y$ be a finite cover of projective smooth and geometrically connected curves over K with $g(X)\ge 2$. Suppose that f can be extended to a finite cover ${\mathcal X} \to {\mathcal Y}$ of semi-stable models over S (it is known that this is always possible up to finite separable extension of K). Then there exists a unique minimal such cover. This gives a canonical way to extend $X\to Y$ to a finite cover of semi-stable models over S.

We construct a map between Bloch's higher Chow groups and Deligne homology for smooth, complex quasiprojective varieties on the level of complexes. For complex projective varieties this results in a formula which generalizes at the same time the classical Griffiths Abel–Jacobi map and the Borel/Beilinson/Goncharov regulator type maps.

This paper is a continuation of the author's previous work, where we studied one of the inequalities between the characteristic ideal of the Selmer group and the ideal of the $p$-adic $L$-function predicted by the two-variable Iwasawa main conjecture for a nearly ordinary Hida deformation $\mathcal{T}$. In this paper, we study several properties of the Selmer group and the $p$-adic $L$-function solving some of the open questions raised in the author's previous work. As applications, we have an infinite family of elliptic cuspforms where the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture holds for every cuspform in the family.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety. We study a relationship between the derived category of $X$ and that of a canonical divisor. As an application, we study Fourier–Mukai transforms when $\kappa (X)=\dim X -1$.

Let $\mathbbm{k}$ be a (topological) field of characteristic 0. To any representation of a given Hopf algebra $\mathfrak{B}_n(\mathbbm{k})$, one can associate (using a Drinfeld associator) a representation $\widehat{\Phi}(\rho)$ of the braid group over the field $\mathbbm{k}((h))$ of Laurent series. We investigate the dependence on $\Phi$ of $\widehat{\Phi}(\rho)$ for a certain class of representations (so-called GT-rigid representations) and from this dependence deduce (continuous) projective representations of the Grothendieck–Teichmüller group $GT_1(\mathbbm{k})$; in particular, for $\mathbbm{k} = \mathbbm{Q}_l$ we obtain representations of the absolute Galois group of $\mathbbm{Q}(\mu_{l^{\infty}})$. In most situations, these projective representations can be decomposed into linear characters, as we do for the representations of the Iwahori–Hecke algebra of type A. In this case, moreover, we express $\widehat{\Phi}(\rho)$ when $\Phi$ is even and obtain unitary matrix models for the representations of the Iwahori–Hecke algebra. The representations of this algebra corresponding to hook diagrams have noteworthy properties under the action of $GT_1(\mathbbm{k})$.

Let R be the exterior algebra in n + 1 variables over a field K. We study the Auslander–Reiten quiver of the category of linear R-modules, and of certain subcategories of the category of coherent sheaves over Pn. If n > 1, we prove that up to shift, all but one of the connected components of these Auslander–Reiten quivers are translation subquivers of a ${\bf Z} A_{\infty}$-type quiver. We also study locally free sheaves over the projective n-space Pn for n > 1 and we show that each connected component contains at most one indecomposable locally free sheaf of rank less than n. Finally, using results from the theory of finite-dimensional algebras, we construct a family of indecomposable locally free sheaves of arbitrary large ranks, where the ranks can be computed using the Chebysheff polynomials of the second kind.

In this paper, we study bounds for the number of rational points on twists $C'$ of a fixed curve $C$ over a number field ${\mathcal K}$, under the condition that the group of ${\mathcal K}$-rational points on the Jacobian $J'$ of $C'$ has rank smaller than the genus of $C'$. The main result is that with some explicitly given finitely many possible exceptions, we have a bound of the form $2r + c$, where $r$ is the rank of $J'({\mathcal K})$ and $c$ is a constant depending on $C$. For the proof, we use a refinement of the method of Chabauty–Coleman: the main new ingredient is to use it for an extension field of ${\mathcal K}_v$, where $v$ is a place of bad reduction for $C'$.

We prove that an automorphism of the group of birational transformations of the complex projective plane is the composition of an interior automorphism and an automorphism of the field $\mathbb{C}$. The proof is based on a study of maximal abelian subgroups of the Cremona group.

We prove a finiteness result in the space of arcs $X_\infty$ of a singular variety X, which is an extension of the stability result of Denef and Loeser (Germs of arcs on singular algebraic varieties and motivic integration, Invent. Math. 135 (1999), 201–232). From this follows a curve selection lemma for generically stable subsets of $X_\infty$. As a consequence, we extend to all dimensions the problem of wedges, proposed by Lejeune-Jalabert (Arcs analytiques et résolution minimale des singularités des surfaces quasi-homogénes, Lecture Notes in Mathematics, vol. 777 (Springer, Berlin, 1980), 303–336), and we obtain that an affirmative answer to this problem is equivalent to the surjectivity of the Nash map. This implies, for instance, that the Nash map is bijective for sandwiched surface singularities.

We define a complex horospherical transform on an affine symmetric space $X=G/H$ of Hermitian type and show that it has no kernel on the representations of the $H$-spherical holomorphic discrete series.

Let X be a smooth complex projective surface and let C(X) denote the field of rational functions on X. In this paper, we prove that for any m > M(X), there exists a rational dominant map $f \colon X \to Y$, which is generically finite of degree m, into a complex rational ruled surface Y, whose monodromy is the alternating group Am. This gives a finite algebraic extension C(X): C(x1, x2) of degree m, whose normal closure has Galois group Am.

Silverman has discussed the problem of bounding the Mordell–Weil ranks of elliptic curves over towers of function fields (J. Algebraic Geom. 9 (2000), 301–308; J. reine. angew. Math. 577 (2004), 153–169). We first prove generalizations of the theorems of Silverman by a different method, allowing non-abelian Galois groups and removing the dependence on Tate's conjectures. We then prove some theorems about the growth of Mordell–Weil ranks in towers of function fields whose Galois groups are $p$-adic Lie groups; a natural question is whether the Mordell–Weil rank is bounded in such a tower. We give some Galois-theoretic criteria which guarantee that certain curves ${\mathcal{E}}/{\mathbb{Q}}(t)$ have finite Mordell–Weil rank over ${\mathbb{C}}(t^{p^{-\infty}})$, and show that these criteria are met for elliptic K3 surfaces whose associated Galois representations have sufficiently large image.

A logarithmic 1-form on $\mathbb C\mathbb P^n$ can be written as

with $\widehat F_i=(\prod_0^m F_j)/F_i$ for some homogeneous polynomials Fi of degree di and constants $\lambda_i\in{\mathbb C}^\star$ such that $\sum\lambda_id_i=0$. For general $F_i,\lambda_i$, the singularities of $\omega$ consist of a schematic union of the codimension 2 subvarieties Fi = Fj = 0 together with, possibly, finitely many isolated points. This is the case when all Fi are smooth and in general position. In this situation, we give a formula which prescribes the number of isolated singularities.
