A long-standing conjecture of Richter and Thomassen states that the total number of intersection points between any n simple closed Jordan curves in the plane, so that any pair of them intersect and no three curves pass through the same point, is at least (1−o(1))n 2.

We confirm the above conjecture in several important cases, including the case (1) when all curves are convex, and (2) when the family of curves can be partitioned into two equal classes such that each curve from the first class touches every curve from the second class. (Two closed or open curves are said to be touching if they have precisely one point in common and at this point the two curves do not properly cross.)

An important ingredient of our proofs is the following statement. Let S be a family of n open curves in ℝ2, so that each curve is the graph of a continuous real function defined on ℝ, and no three of them pass through the same point. If there are nt pairs of touching curves in S, then the number of crossing points is $\Omega(nt\sqrt{\log t/\log\log t})$ .

Suppose a binary string x = x1 . . . xn is being broadcast repeatedly over a faulty communication channel. Each time, the channel delivers a fixed number m of the digits (m < n) with the lost digits chosen uniformly at random and the order of the surviving digits preserved. How large does m have to be to reconstruct the message?

In 1990 Bender, Canfield and McKay gave an asymptotic formula for the number of connected graphs on [n] = {1,2,. . .,n} with m edges, whenever n and the nullity m−n+1 tend to infinity. Let Cr(n,t) be the number of connected r-uniform hypergraphs on [n] with nullity t = (r−1)m−n+1, where m is the number of edges. For r ≥ 3, asymptotic formulae for Cr(n,t) are known only for partial ranges of the parameters: in 1997 Karoński and Łuczak gave one for t = o(log n/log log n), and recently Behrisch, Coja-Oghlan and Kang gave one for t=Θ(n). Here we prove such a formula for any fixed r ≥ 3 and any t = t(n) satisfying t = o(n) and t→∞ as n→∞, complementing the last result. This leaves open only the case t/n→∞, which we expect to be much simpler, and will consider in future work. The proof is based on probabilistic methods, and in particular on a bivariate local limit theorem for the number of vertices and edges in the largest component of a certain random hypergraph. We deduce this from the corresponding central limit theorem by smoothing techniques.

An n × n partial Latin square P is called α-dense if each row and column has at most αn non-empty cells and each symbol occurs at most αn times in P. An n × n array A where each cell contains a subset of {1,…, n} is a (βn, βn, βn)-array if each symbol occurs at most βn times in each row and column and each cell contains a set of size at most βn. Combining the notions of completing partial Latin squares and avoiding arrays, we prove that there are constants α, β > 0 such that, for every positive integer n, if P is an α-dense n × n partial Latin square, A is an n × n (βn, βn, βn)-array, and no cell of P contains a symbol that appears in the corresponding cell of A, then there is a completion of P that avoids A; that is, there is a Latin square L that agrees with P on every non-empty cell of P, and, for each i, j satisfying 1 ≤ i, j ≤ n, the symbol in position (i, j) in L does not appear in the corresponding cell of A.

In this paper we introduce some Christoffel–Darboux type identities for independence polynomials. As an application, we give a new proof of a theorem of Chudnovsky and Seymour, which states that the independence polynomial of a claw-free graph has only real roots. Another application is related to a conjecture of Merrifield and Simmons.

We study the distribution of products of conjugacy classes in finite simple groups, obtaining effective two-step mixing results, which give rise to an approximation to a conjecture of Thompson.

Our results, combined with work of Gowers and Viola, also lead to the solution of recent conjectures they posed on interleaved products and related complexity lower bounds, extending their work on the groups SL(2, q) to all (non-abelian) finite simple groups.

In particular it follows that, if G is a finite simple group, and A, B ⊆ Gt for t ⩾ 2 are subsets of fixed positive densities, then, as a = (a1, . . ., at) ∈ A and b = (b1, . . ., bt) ∈ B are chosen uniformly, the interleaved product a • b:=a1b1 . . . atbt is almost uniform on G (with quantitative estimates) with respect to the ℓ∞-norm.

It also follows that the communication complexity of an old decision problem related to interleaved products of a, b ∈ Gt is at least Ω(t log |G|) when G is a finite simple group of Lie type of bounded rank, and at least Ω(t log log |G|) when G is any finite simple group. Both these bounds are best possible.

Given a finite set $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, points $a_1,a_2,\dotsc,a_{\ell} \in A$ form an $\ell$-hole in A if they are the vertices of a convex polytope, which contains no points of A in its interior. We construct arbitrarily large point sets in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ having no holes of size $O(4^dd\log d)$ or more. This improves the previously known upper bound of order $d^{d+o(d)}$ due to Valtr. The basic version of our construction uses a certain type of equidistributed point sets, originating from numerical analysis, known as (t,m,s)-nets or (t,s)-sequences, yielding a bound of $2^{7d}$. The better bound is obtained using a variant of (t,m,s)-nets, obeying a relaxed equidistribution condition.

We show that the maximum number of convex polygons in a triangulation of n points in the plane is O(1.5029n). This improves an earlier bound of O(1.6181n) established by van Kreveld, Löffler and Pach (2012), and almost matches the current best lower bound of Ω(1.5028n) due to the same authors. Given a planar straight-line graph G with n vertices, we also show how to compute efficiently the number of convex polygons in G.

A set of points in d-dimensional Euclidean space is almost equidistant if, among any three points of the set, some two are at distance 1. We show that an almost-equidistant set in ℝd has cardinality O(d4/3).

Let k be a positive integer, k ≥ 2. In this paper we study bipartite graphs G such that, for n sufficiently large, each two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph Kn gives a monochromatic copy of G, with some k of its vertices having the maximum degree of these k vertices minus the minimum degree of these k vertices (in the colored Kn) at most k − 2.

The partition number of a product hypergraph is introduced as the minimal size of a partition of its vertex set into sets that are edges. This number is shown to be multiplicative if all factors are graphs with all loops included.

An r-cut of the complete r-uniform hypergraph Krn is obtained by partitioning its vertex set into r parts and taking all edges that meet every part in exactly one vertex. In other words it is the edge set of a spanning complete r-partite subhypergraph of Krn. An r-cut cover is a collection of r-cuts such that each edge of Krn is in at least one of the cuts. While in the graph case r = 2 any 2-cut cover on average covers each edge at least 2-o(1) times, when r is odd we exhibit an r-cut cover in which each edge is covered exactly once. When r is even no such decomposition can exist, but we can bound the average number of times an edge is cut in an r-cut cover between and . The upper bound construction can be reformulated in terms of a natural polyhedral problem or as a probability problem, and we solve the latter asymptotically.

Scott conjectured in [6] that the class of graphs with no induced subdivision of a given graph is χ-bounded. We verify his conjecture for maximal triangle-free graphs.

The core of a graph G is the subgraph GΔ induced by the vertices of maximum degree. We define the deleted core D(G) of G. We extend an earlier sufficient condition due to Hoffman [7] for a graph H to be the core of a Class 2 graph, and thereby provide a stronger sufficient condition. The new sufficient condition is in terms of D(H). We show that in some circumstances our condition is necessary; but it is not necessary in general.

We show that, for a constant-degree algebraic curve γ in ℝD, every set of n points on γ spans at least Ω(n4/3) distinct distances, unless γ is an algebraic helix, in the sense of Charalambides [2]. This improves the earlier bound Ω(n5/4) of Charalambides [2].

We also show that, for every set P of n points that lie on a d-dimensional constant-degree algebraic variety V in ℝD, there exists a subset S ⊂ P of size at least Ω(n4/(9+12(d−1))), such that S spans $\left({\begin{array}{*{20}{c}} {|S|} \\ 2 \\\end{array}} \right)$ distinct distances. This improves the earlier bound of Ω(n1/(3d)) of Conlon, Fox, Gasarch, Harris, Ulrich and Zbarsky [4].

Both results are consequences of a common technical tool.

This paper concerns a relatively new combinatorial structure called staircase tableaux. They were introduced in the context of the asymmetric exclusion process and Askey–Wilson polynomials; however, their purely combinatorial properties have gained considerable interest in the past few years.

In this paper we further study combinatorial properties of staircase tableaux. We consider a general model of random staircase tableaux in which symbols (Greek letters) that appear in staircase tableaux may have arbitrary positive weights. (We consider only the case with the parameters u = q = 1.) Under this general model we derive a number of results. Some of our results concern the limiting laws for the number of appearances of symbols in a random staircase tableaux. They generalize and subsume earlier results that were obtained for specific values of the weights.

One advantage of our generality is that we may let the weights approach extreme values of zero or infinity, which covers further special cases appearing earlier in the literature. Furthermore, our generality allows us to analyse the structure of random staircase tableaux, and we obtain several results in this direction.

One of the tools we use is the generating functions of the parameters of interest. This leads us to a two-parameter family of polynomials, generalizing the classical Eulerian polynomials.

We also briefly discuss the relation of staircase tableaux to the asymmetric exclusion process, to other recently introduced types of tableaux, and to an urn model studied by a number of researchers, including Philippe Flajolet.

We derive area limit laws for the various symmetry classes of staircase polygons on the square lattice, in a uniform ensemble where, for fixed perimeter, each polygon occurs with the same probability. This complements a previous study by Leroux and Rassart, where explicit expressions for the area and perimeter generating functions of these classes have been derived.

Consider the complete n-graph with independent exponential (mean n) edge-weights. Let M(c, n) be the maximal size of subtree for which the average edge-weight is at most c. It is shown that M(c, n) makes the transition from o(n) to Ω(n) around some critical value c(0), which can be specified in terms of a fixed point of a mapping on probability distributions.

We prove Bogolyubov–Ruzsa-type results for finite subsets of groups with small tripling, |A3| ≤ O(|A|), or small alternation, |AA−1A| ≤ O(|A|). As applications, we obtain a qualitative analogue of Bogolyubov’s lemma for dense sets in arbitrary finite groups, as well as a quantitative arithmetic regularity lemma for sets of bounded VC-dimension in finite groups of bounded exponent. The latter result generalizes the abelian case, due to Alon, Fox and Zhao, and gives a quantitative version of previous work of the author, Pillay and Terry.

Let [Mscr ]n,k(S) be the set of n-edge k-vertex rooted maps in some class on the surface S. Let P be a planar map in the class. We develop a method for showing that almost all maps in [Mscr ]n,k(S) contain many copies of P. One consequence of this is that almost all maps in [Mscr ]n,k(S) have no symmetries. The classes considered include c-connected maps (c [les ] 3) and certain families of degree restricted maps.
