Two infinite 0–1 sequences are called compatible when it is possible to cast out $0\,$s from both in such a way that they become complementary to each other. Answering a question of Peter Winkler, we show that if the two 0–1 sequences are random i.i.d. and independent from each other, with probability $p$ of $1\,$s, then if $p$ is sufficiently small they are compatible with positive probability. The question is equivalent to a certain dependent percolation with a power-law behaviour: the probability that the origin is blocked at distance $n$ but not closer decreases only polynomially fast and not, as usual, exponentially.

The main result of this paper has the following consequence. Let G be an abelian group of order n. Let {xi: 1 ≤ 2n − 1} be a family of elements of G and let {wi: 1 ≤ i ≤ n − 1} be a family of integers prime relative to n. Then there is a permutation & of [1,2n − 1] such that

Applying this result with wi = 1 for all i, one obtains the Erdős–Ginzburg–Ziv Theorem.

We show that the diameter diam(Gn) of a random labelled connected planar graph with n vertices is equal to n1/4+o(1), in probability. More precisely, there exists a constant c > 0 such that

We show that every regular tournament on n vertices has at least n!/(2 + o(1))n Hamiltonian cycles, thus answering a question of Thomassen [17] and providing a partial answer to a question of Friedgut and Kahn [7]. This compares to an upper bound of about O(n0.25n!/2n) for arbitrary tournaments due to Friedgut and Kahn (somewhat improving Alon's bound of O(n0.5n!/2n)). A key ingredient of the proof is a martingale analysis of self-avoiding walks on a regular tournament.

Plünnecke's inequality is a standard tool for obtaining estimates on the cardinality of sumsets and has many applications in additive combinatorics. We present a new proof. The main novelty is that the proof is completed with no reference to Menger's theorem or Cartesian products of graphs. We also investigate the sharpness of the inequality and show that it can be sharp for arbitrarily long, but not for infinite commutative graphs. A key step in our investigation is the construction of arbitrarily long regular commutative graphs. Lastly we prove a necessary condition for the inequality to be attained.

Let be a set of terms over an arbitrary (but finite) number of Boolean variables. Let U() be the set of truth assignments that satisfy exactly one term in . Motivated by questions in computational complexity, Rudich conjectured that there exist ∊, δ > 0 such that, if is any set of terms for which U() contains at least a (1−∊)-fraction of all truth assignments, then there exists a term t ∈ such that at least a δ-fraction of assignments satisfy some term of sharing a variable with t [8].

We prove a stronger version: for any independent assignment of the variables (not necessarily the uniform one), if the measure of U() is at least 1 − ∊, there exists a t ∈ such that the measure of the set of assignments satisfying either t or some term incompatible with t (i.e., having no satisfying assignments in common with t) is at least . (A key part of the proof is a correlation-like inequality on events in a finite product probability space that is in some sense dual to Reimer's inequality [11], a.k.a. the BKR inequality [5], or the van den Berg–Kesten conjecture [3].)

Given a graph G = (V, E) and a set of κ pairs of vertices in V, we are interested in finding, for each pair (ai, bi), a path connecting ai to bi such that the set of κ paths so found is edge-disjoint. (For arbitrary graphs the problem is [Nscr ][Pscr ]-complete, although it is in [Pscr ] if κ is fixed.)

We present a polynomial time randomized algorithm for finding edge-disjoint paths in the random regular graph Gn,r, for sufficiently large r. (The graph is chosen first, then an adversary chooses the pairs of end-points.) We show that almost every Gn,r is such that all sets of κ = Ω(n/log n) pairs of vertices can be joined. This is within a constant factor of the optimum.

As with the previous proofs relating to this problem, ours is constructive. We will give an on-line algorithm and analyse it using game theory.

A simple geometric argument establishes an inequality between the sums of two pairs of first-passage times. This result is used to prove monotonicity, convexity and concavity results for first-passage times with cylinder and half-space restrictions.

Semi-graphoids are combinatorial structures that arise in statistical learning theory. They are equivalent to convex rank tests and to polyhedral fans that coarsen the reflection arrangement of the symmetric group Sn. In this paper we resolve two problems on semi-graphoids posed in Studený's book (2005), and we answer a related question of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams on generalized permutohedra. We also study the semigroup and the toric ideal associated with semi-graphoids.

This paper gives precise isoperimetric inequalities for infinite graphs on which a group acts with finite quotient. Decay estimates are obtained for the iterated kernels of the associated random walks.

Associate to a finite labeled graph G(V, E) its multiset of neighborhoods (G) = {N(υ): υ ∈ V}. We discuss the question of when a list is realizable by a graph, and to what extent G is determined by (G). The main results are: the decision problem is NP-complete; for bipartite graphs the decision problem is polynomially equivalent to Graph Isomorphism; forests G are determined up to isomorphism by (G); and if G is connected bipartite and (H) = (G), then H is completely described.

It is proved that the smallest cardinality among the maximal irredundant sets in an n–vertex graph with maximum degree Δ([ges ]2) is at least 2n/3Δ. This substantially improves a bound by Bollobás and Cockayne [1]. The class of graphs which attain this bound is characterised.

Let Φ be a random k-SAT formula in which every variable occurs precisely d times positively and d times negatively. Assuming that k is sufficiently large and that d is slightly below the critical degree where the formula becomes unsatisfiable with high probability, we determine the limiting distribution of the number of satisfying assignments.

We study a point process describing the asymptotic behaviour of sizes of the largest components of the random graph G(n, p) in the critical window, that is, for p = n−1 + λn−4/3, where λ is a fixed real number. In particular, we show that this point process has a surprising rigidity. Fluctuations in the large values will be balanced by opposite fluctuations in the small values such that the sum of the values larger than a small ϵ (a scaled version of the number of vertices in components of size greater than εn2/3) is almost constant.

We consider the t-improper chromatic number of the Erdős–Rényi random graph Gn,p. The t-improper chromatic number χt(G) is the smallest number of colours needed in a colouring of the vertices in which each colour class induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most t. If t = 0, then this is the usual notion of proper colouring. When the edge probability p is constant, we provide a detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour of χt(Gn,p) over the range of choices for the growth of t = t(n).

JumbleG is a Maker–Breaker game. Maker and Breaker take turns in choosing edges from the complete graph $K_n$. Maker's aim is to choose what we call an $\epsilon$-regular graph (that is, the minimum degree is at least $(\frac12-\epsilon) n$ and, for every pair of disjoint subsets $S,T\subset V$ of cardinalities at least $\epsilon n$, the number of edges $e(S,T)$ between $S$ and $T$ satisfies $\bigl|\frac{e(S,T)}{|S|\,|T|}-\frac12\bigr|\leq \epsilon$.) In this paper we show that Maker can create an $\epsilon$-regular graph, for $\epsilon\geq 2(\log n/n)^{1/3}$. We also consider a similar game, JumbleG2, where Maker's aim is to create a graph with minimum degree at least $\bigl(\frac12-\epsilon\bigr)n$ and maximum co-degree at most $\bigl(\frac14+\epsilon\bigr)n$, and show that Maker has a winning strategy for $\epsilon> 3 (\log n/n)^{1/2}$. Thus, in both games Maker can create a pseudo-random graph of density $\frac12$. This guarantees Maker's win in several other positional games, also discussed here.

Algorithmic aspects of a chip-firing game on a graph introduced by Biggs are studied. This variant of the chip-firing game, called the dollar game, has the properties that every starting configuration leads to a so-called critical configuration. The set of critical configurations has many interesting properties. In this paper it is proved that the number of steps needed to reach a critical configuration is polynomial in the number of edges of the graph and the number of chips in the starting configuration, but not necessarily in the size of the input. An alternative algorithm is also described and analysed.

A partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system is an r-uniform hypergraph on n vertices in which every set of l vertices is contained in at most one edge. A partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system is complete if every set of l vertices is contained in exactly one edge. In a hypergraph , the independence number α() denotes the maximum size of a set of vertices in containing no edge. In this article we prove the following. Given integers r,l such that r ≥ 2l − 1 ≥ 3, we prove that there exists a partial Steiner (n,r,l)-system such that

A class of labelled graphs is bridge-addable if, for all graphs G in and all vertices u and v in distinct connected components of G, the graph obtained by adding an edge between u and v is also in ; the class is monotone if, for all G ∈ and all subgraphs H of G, we have H ∈ . We show that for any bridge-addable, monotone class whose elements have vertex set {1,. . .,n}, the probability that a graph chosen uniformly at random from is connected is at least (1−on(1))e−½, where on(1) → 0 as n → ∞. This establishes the special case of the conjecture of McDiarmid, Steger and Welsh when the condition of monotonicity is added. This result has also been obtained independently by Kang and Panagiotou.
