Celadonite, glauconite and Fe-illite samples were studied by XRD, EXAFS, IR and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The samples were monomineralic and corresponded to 1M polytype. In the OH-stretching region of the IR spectra the content of each definite pair of cations bonded to OH groups was determined. The number of heavy (Fe) and light (Al, Mg) octahedral cations nearest to Fe was found by the EXAFS technique. The predicted quadrupole splitting values for each definite arrangement of cations nearest to Fe3+ were used to interpret the Mössbauer spectra. After the fitting procedure, the intensity of each doublet corresponded to a definite set of local cation arrangements around Fe3+ and to a definite occurrence probability of these arrangements. Computer simulation and the experimental data obtained were used to reconstruct the distribution of isomorphous octahedral cations in the 2:1 layers. For all samples, R2+ cations prefer to occupy one of the two symmetrically independent cis-sites and R2+-R2+ and/or Al-Fe3+ were prohibited in the directions forming ± 120° with the b axis. Therefore, octahedral sheets of the samples revealed domain structure, in which domains differ in size, in the nature of predominant cation and/or by cation ordering.

Accessory green ferric clay occurs in fluvial litharenites of the Early Triassic Rewan Group. Although resembling glauconitic minerals in thin-section, electron microprobe analyses indicate that the green ferric clay is mainly ferric illite. The ferric illite may have formed in a small hypersaline lake or well drained, flood-plain soil, and its presence in the Rewan Group cannot be used to support a notion that the unit is partly marine influenced. Identification of the ferric illite by electron microprobe analysis shows that some green ferric clays, particularly those that resemble glauconitic minerals optically, may require precise quantitative elemental analysis before they can be used as a basis for environmental interpretation. Green ferric clay in the Rewan Group also includes detrital celadonite that most likely originated in a volcanic arc setting.

Pillared montmorillonite was used as an adsorbent for binary mixtures of hydrocarbons and alcohols (benzene/n-heptane; ethanol/cyclohexane; ethanol/toluene; propanol/ toluene). The adsorbent was prepared from the Na-form of a bentonite from Milos by reaction with polyhydroxoaluminium solutions. The adsorption behaviour of the pillared montmorillonite was characterized by the adsorption excess isotherms and the heats of immersion. Sorption capacities and wetting properties differed significantly from those of the Na-montmorillonite. Benzene was adsorbed preferentially from mixtures with n-heptane. Ethanol and propanol were also preferentially adsorbed from mixtures with cyclohexane and toluene but the curves showed azeotropic points at molar fractions of alcohols of 0.7-0.9. The calorimetric data revealed the partially hydrophobic character of the pillared montmorillonite. The heat of wetting of benzene or toluene on the pillared samples was distinctly higher than that of ethanol whereas ethanol gave the highest wetting enthalpies on Na-montmorillonite.

The ability to produce humic-like polymeric compounds, with L-tyrosine as the starting material, was evaluated using different mineral systems, e.g. on Ca-, A1- and Cu(II)-saturated montmorillonite, nontronite and kaolinite, and on quartz. Clay minerals proved to be effective in the formation of these compounds, but not quartz, except in the presence of Cu(II). The newly formed compounds were fractionated by alkaline extraction. With clay systems, the amounts of substances produced appear to be related more to the interlayer cation than to the clay type. Copper cations appear to be more effective when not associated with the clay structure.

Fundamental particles of illite-smectite from bentonites were separated into classes by high-speed centrifugation after infinite osmotic swelling of mixed-layer crystals, achieved by Na-exchange and dispersion in distilled water. In samples free of detrital contamination, the thinnest fundamental particles yield older K-Ar ages than the thicker fundamental particles. This implies that they do not preferentially lose radiogenic 40Ar due to size, and that the illitization process is a crystal growth mechanism (not nucleation plus growth). As a result, any K-Ar age of fundamental illite particles from bentonites is an integral over longer or shorter periods of time, depending on the thermal history of the rocks. In thick bentonite beds, the measured age difference between the beginning of the illitization process at the contact with the host rocks and the end in the centre of the bed records extremely slow K diffusion in these well compacted rocks. These data explain why measured K-Ar ages of illite-smectite from bentonites are younger than the corresponding age of shale illitization, inferred from the burial history of the basin. The finest technically separable size-fractions of associated shales (<0.02 μm) yield K-Ar dates* greater than the stratigraphic age. This observation points to incomplete recrystallization of detrital illite during burial diagenesis.

The distribution of clay minerals in recent sediments on the continental shelf and in the Bay of Cádiz has been analysed as part of a wider study of sedimentary exchange between the continent and the continental margin. The clay minerals included in the muddy sediments consist mainly of illite, kaolinite, smectite, randomly mixed-layered illite-smectite, chlorite, vermiculite and randomly mixed-layered illite-chlorite. Distribution of the minerals indicates that inheritance from the adjacent continental areas is the most important process involved.

The relations between the clay minerals were established by Q-mode and R-mode factor analysis. The main clay mineral associations are: (1) illite-kaolinite, (2) smectite-random mixed-layered illitesmectite, and (3) kaolinite-random mixed-layered illite-smectite-vermiculite. The main sources of sediment supply to the continental shelf are the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers. Sediment from these rivers and from the rivers flowing into the Bay of Cádiz (mainly the Guadalete) is transported to the part of the shelf outside the bay by ebb-tide currents. The path of this outflow to the continental shelf, where the sediment is partially deposited, is influenced by the morphology of the coast and by hydrodynamic processes.

Although it is generally agreed that Fe and Al can act to bind soil particles, their relative efficiencies as aggregants are still disputed. In this work, the aggregating efficiencies of both aged and non-aged Fe and Al oxides precipitated on kaolin or quartz substrates were characterized by comparing their effects on particle size distributions (PSD). To facilitate comparison of PSD data, these were parameterized by fitting them with five different probability density functions (the normal, lognormal, Jaky, fractal and Rosin-Rammler functions). The best fits were given by the Rosin-Rammler function (R2 = 0.997), whose α parameter was used to compare the aggregating efficiency of Fe and Al oxides: in order of decreasing efficiency, non-aged Al > non-aged Fe ≈ aged Fe > aged Al-precipitates.

For mixed-layer clay fractions from the North Sea and Denmark, X-ray diffractograms have been recorded for specimens saturated with Mg, Ca, Na and NH4, both airdry and intercalated with ethylene glycol, and the patterns have been computer-simulated with a multicomponent program. The mixed-layer fractions consist of an illite-smectite-vermiculite (I-S-V) phase constituting ~90% of the fraction and a kaolinite-illite-vermiculite (K-I-V) phase. For each I-S-V, the degree of swelling in swelling interlayers depends on both interlayer cation and glycolation, whereas the amount of non-swelling illite and swelling interlayers and the interstratification parameters are constant. Based on structural characteristics and the degree of diagenetic transformation, the samples investigated can be divided into three groups. The I-S-V of group one is predominantly detrital and has 0.69-0.73 illite, 0.26-0.20 smectite and 0.04-0.07 vermiculite interlayers, the illite, smectite and vermiculite interlayers being segregated. The I-S-V of group two has been diagenetically transformed and has 0.80 illite, 0.12 smectite and 0.08 vermiculite interlayers, the vermiculite interlayers being segregated whereas the illite and smectite have the maximum ordering possible for R = 1. The I-S-V of group three has been further transformed during diagenesis and has 0.84 illite, 0.08 smectite and 0.08 vermiculite interlayers. Statistical calculations demonstrate that the I-S-V transformation can be described as a single interlayer transformation (SIT) within the crystallites.

A mineralogical study and multivariant geochemical analysis have been carried out to determine the sedimentation processes and the influence of surrounding rocks on sediments. Analyses were made on the clay fraction of sediments and on bulk samples of rocks from nearby reliefs in the Sorbas Basin (SE Spain). Source rocks were identified by statistical analysis of trace elements and by comparison of the crystallographic parameters of phyllosilicates in sediments and supposed sources. Palaeoenvironmental conditions are recorded by specific elements in the clay minerals. The study of the B and Mg content and of the different types of smectites and palygorskite found in distinct areas has permitted a description of these conditions for this Basin. In this way, different types of deposition environment, showing varying degrees of confinement and influence from marine or continental water, have been distinguished.

The use of field emission electron microscopy for the study of clay mineral petrography in mudrocks and sandstones is discussed. The methodology including sample preparation is outlined and three examples of the application of the technique are described: the formation of authigenic illite in mudrocks, the multiple generation of authigenic illites in sandstones and the effects of KCl drilling muds on shale fabrics. In the study of authigenic illite formation in Palaeocene mudrocks from the North Sea, the FESEM analyses have demonstrated the formation of illites with increasing burial depth that conventional SEM and XRD analyses had failed to show. The FESEM analyses of the authigenic illites in Carboniferous sandstones from the southern North Sea revealed at least three different habits representing different generation episodes rather than one illite formation event.This has important repercussions with regard to the interpretation of stable isotope and dating data for the illites. Significant petrographic changes in shales after treatment with KCl drilling muds have been observed from FESEM analyses, suggesting reactivity between the shales and the KCl muds.

From measurements of dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature, as well as thermally stimulated depolarization currents, performed on a dry Na-montmorillonite, a qualitative description of the conduction mechanism has been proposed for this type of material. A representative approach related to the polarization phenomenon determined on this material led to the evaluation of the elementary energy Wj, connected with the reorientation of the dipoles during the hopping process. The results show the coherence between the polarization conductivity and the thermally stimulated currents methods.

The distribution, mineralogy, petrology and bulk and stable isotope chemistry of altered volcanic ash beds in the marine sediments of Mid-Triassic age (Etalian) at Kaka Point, New Zealand, are described and related to lithofacies and the geological processes controlling their development.

Three varieties of altered ash occur in the Kaka Point sediments — porcellanite, claystone (bentonite) and albite-rich. Porcellanites are quartz-rich and may contain analcime and heulandite: they are restricted mainly to the on-shore facies. Claystones are rich in smectitic clay minerals and occur in both the on-shore and off-shore facies. They often contain diagenetic nodules of analcime, quartz, apatite and carbonates. The authigenic carbonates of the on-shore facies are variable in composition (sideritic, rhodochrositic, calcitic), whereas in the off-shore facies they consist only of calcite. The albite-rich lithology is very rare and is known only from the off-shore facies.

The development of the porcellanite and albite-rich lithologies was restricted to slowly deposited, relatively coarse-grained ash sediments in which extensive interchange took place between the sediment's pore-waters and ambient seawater, resulting in enhanced microbial activity and high pH throughout the pore-waters of the suboxic zone beneath the water-sediment interface. The high pH increased the rate of volcanic ash hydrolysis and provided the conditions necessary for the precipitation of zeolite, feldspar and quartz. The development of smectitic claystones was associated with more rapid deposition and limited interchange between the pore-waters of the parent ash and ambient seawater. The pore-water alkalinity was generally lower and enhanced microbial activity and high pHs were restricted to patches of sediment at which quartz, analcime, apatite and carbonates formed diagenetic nodules. Modelling of the stable isotopes of the smectitic clays (δ18O, δD) and diagenetic carbonates (δ18O, δ13C) suggest that: (1) ash argillization in the on-shore facies took place in brackish water (∼25% meteoric water) at an average temperature of ∼50°C and in the off-shore facies in marine pore-waters (∼10% meteoric waters) at ∼40°C and (2) diagenetic carbonate precipitation in the near-shore facies took place at ∼30°C and in the off-shore facies at 60–80°C.

The pattern of ash alteration in the marine Triassic sediments at Kaka Point is considered to represent an early stage in the development of the zeolite pattern associated with the classic area of zeolite facies metamorphism in the Taringatura and Hokonui Hills.

Distribution coefficients and isotherms for the adsorption of radioiodide, caesium and strontium ions (125I−, 134Cs+ and 85Sr2+) were determined in untreated vermiculite and in vermiculite treated with the chloride salt of hexadecylpyridinium (HDPy+). Experimental data reveal that some of the alkylammonium ions were incorporated as HDPyCl ion pairs into the vermiculite. The fraction of ion pairs adsorbed is reflected by an increase in distribution coefficients with increasing saturation levels. Consequently, a considerable part of the iodide adsorption could be attributed to an anion exchange process. At smaller amounts of Cs+ and Sr2+ adsorbed, distribution coefficients of the modified clay mineral are significantly reduced in comparison with the original material. These differences are less pronounced when greater amounts of cations are adsorbed. Generally, larger distribution coefficients were found for the Cs+ compared with the Sr2+ ion in the untreated and modified samples.

X-ray diffraction chlorite crystallinity (ChC) indices and major element chemical compositions of chlorites and bulk rocks were determined and correlated in meta-igneous rocks from different Mesozoic formations in various tectonic units of the Bükk Mountains, NE Hungary. The rocks, of basic to acidic compositions, range from ocean-floor metamorphic prehnite-pumpellyite facies (diagenetic zone) through regional metamorphic prehnite-pumpellyite facies (anchizone) up to the regional metamorphic pumpellyite-actinolite and greenschist facies (epizone). As in the case of meta-sedimentary rocks, chlorite crystallinity can be applied as an empirical, complementary petrogenetic tool to determine relative differences in grades of low-temperature meta-igneous rocks. Electron microprobe and XRD data show that ChC is controlled mainly by the decreasing amounts of contaminants (mixed-layered components or discrete, intergrown phases of mostly smectitic composition) in chlorite with advancing metamorphic grade, up to the epizone. The apparent increase in calculated Aliv content of chlorite with increasing temperature is related to the decrease of these contaminants, as stated earlier by Jiang et al. (1994). On the basis of the significant correlations found between ChC and temperatures, derived by the chlorite-Aliv geothermometer of Cathelineau (1988), both methods may be used for estimating the approximate temperatures of metamorphism, in spite of the contrasting interpretation of chemical data from chlorites obtained by electron microprobe analyses. After determining the effects of changing bulk chemistry on chlorite composition and ChC, the chlorite crystallinity method may complement the correlation of the illite crystallinity-based zonal classification of meta-sediments and the mineral facies classification of meta-igneous rocks.

Transformations of clay minerals were studied in a sequence of podzols (Entic Cryorthods) of increasing age (5500-10000 years BP) developed from till materials in central Finland. The age of the soils was estimated according to altitude above the present sea level, with reference to the age of ancient shorelines and the rate of land uplift. Clay minerals in fine (<0.1 µm), coarse (0.1-2 µm) clay and fine silt (2-5 µm) fractions were studied by X-ray diffraction. The layer charge of expandable minerals was estimated on the basis of their re-expansion with ethylene glycol following K-saturation and heating to 110°C Pedogenic transformations of clay minerals occur essentially in the E horizons of the podzols. Smectites and illite-smectite mixed-layers are the dominant clay minerals in the E horizons of soils older than 6500 years. The number of mixed-layers decreases with evolution of the soil, leaving a nearly pure smectite phase in the oldest soil (10000 years). The smectites are dioctahedral with a tetrahedral charge. Groups of low-charge and highcharge interlayers are both present in the samples, but low-charge smectite layers were found only in the two older soils (9500-10000 years). This suggests alteration with time of the high-charge smectites.

The clay mineralogy and surface charge characteristics of four basaltic soils from Western Samoa have been studied. The soils contained subordinate to dominant amounts of poorly ordered allophanic material in addition to varying amounts of crystalline free iron oxide minerals. Infrared studies revealed the presence of trace to subordinate amounts of kaolin minerals in all the soils. The surface charge-pH curves followed a constant potential model indicating the presence of substantial amounts of pH-dependent charge. Some negative charge was present, however, at pH values as low as 3.0 and small quantities of positive charge were detected at pH values as high as 9. Values for PZC ranged from 2.2 to 3.9 and these were generally higher than the pHo determined by the ΔpH method.

In samples of slate from the Fomeque Formation near Bogota, Colombia, pyrophyllite was found to occur together with mixed-layered illite-smectite, chlorite and illite. Other minerals were quartz, K-feldspar, dolomite and pyrite. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the mixed-layer represents an R1 ordered rectorite with 80–90% illite layers. The microfabric is developed as a closely spaced cleavage in the phyllosilicate-rich rocks, and grades into a fracture cleavage with coarsening of the grain size. No cleavage was observed in the interbedded siltstones. It is suggested that the microfrabrics developed in these rocks correspond to high diagenetic to anchizonal conditions. The illite crystallinity from the slate has been measured on glycolated samples and ranges from 0.47 to 0.55°Δ2θ with a mean of 0.52°Δ2θ Based on the stability of R1 ordered rectorite, the illite crystallinity and the microfabric development, it is proposed that the rocks have been subjected to a temperature of ∼200°C at low pressure. At this temperature, pyrophyllite can only be stabilized at the expense of kaolinite and quartz if aH2O ≪ 1.

A method has been developed to synthesize organo-hectorite clays directly from a Mg-silicate gel containing organic or organometallic molecules that are expected to be incorporated within the interlayer space. Complete crystallization occurs upon aqueous reflux for 48 h. The progress of clay layer formation was monitored by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal gravimetry (DTG), and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Evidence of clay XRD peaks occurs after just 4 h of hydrothermal treatment, and Mg(OH)2 is no longer observable after 14 h. Observable changes in DTG and IR occur at about this time as well. Warren line-shape analysis of the 110 reflection indicates that when growth is complete the clay lamellae are on average ∼50% and 25% of the size of natural hectorites and montmorillonites, respectively. The N2 BET surface areas for all materials are also compared. Small angle neutron scattering shows that addition of tetraethyl ammonium (TEA) ions does not alter the structural integrity over that of the purely inorganic form of Li-hectorite, but that use of a cationic polymer does significantly alter the microstructure. The effect of temperature is critical, for at room temperature only the layered Mg hydroxide mineral brucite crystallizes unless very long time scales are used. The crystallizations carried out at room temperature show that clay will form after about 3 months, but that the presence of organics (at least TEA) acts to hinder this process greatly. The role of the organic molecules on silicate clay layer formation is compared with the role of organics in zeolite synthesis.

Unique phyllosilicate assemblages occur in quartz-calcite veins cutting altered andesite at Builth Wells, UK. These veins show: (1) a central talc-dominated assemblage, grading into a saponite/corrensite/chlorite-dominated assemblage near their walls; (2) talc replacing calcite and quartz; and (3) closely associated blocky and fibrous saponite. Fibrous saponite occurs in narrow (<1 cm) fractures that extend for up to 1 m from major (⩽ 50 cm wide) talc-bearing veins. A thin halo (<5 mm) of wall-rock alteration, containing blocky saponite and minor corrensite, borders the fibrous saponite. These minerals may have originated when cooling, low-pH, quartz-saturated, Mg-rich fluid invaded pre-existing quartz/calcite veins. Quartz is replaced by talc where calcite dissolution caused the pH to increase. Wallrock alteration liberated Fe and Al to the fluid causing blocky saponite and corrensite to form. Fibrous saponite formed where lithostatic pressures were directed across hydraulic fractures.
