A new method is described for determining in shales the amount of sulphides that dissolve in dilute hydrochloric acid. The samples are treated with hydrochloric acid under vacuum, and the hydrogen sulphide evolved is absorbed in potassium hydroxide and titrated with potassium permanganate. The analytical results are expressed as FeS.

The influence of Zn on the adsorption and desorption of Cry1Ab toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) on palygorskite and montmorillonite was studied. The adsorption of the toxin gradually increased with increasing Zn concentration from 0 to 1.0 mmol L–1, and then decreased with further increase in Zn concentration. The adsorption isotherms of the toxin in the absence and presence of Zn were well described by the Langmuir equation (R2 > 0.9810–0.9991). The separation factor (RL) decreased with increase of Zn concentration, suggesting that the irreversibility of the adsorption increases. The XRD results showed that the treatment by Tris buffer or Zn(NO3)2 solution caused an expansion of the interlayer space of montmorillonite but did not affect palygorskite. The IR spectra suggest that Zn was likely to be combined with amino groups on the surface of the toxin. The presence of Zn during the adsorption of the toxin decreased desorption, suggesting that the residual risk of toxin would be exacerbated if soil is polluted by zinc.

The charge transfer process that occurs in two samples of Wyoming montmorillonite of different grain size pillared with Zr by interaction with perylene (Pe) and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) has been studied. These smectites are strongly affected by the exchange of Zr and appear to be strong electron acceptors and weak donors. The ESR results show that their ability to form charge transfer radicals is related to the details of preparation, which most probably control the accessibility of Pe and TCNE to the internal surface.

An Illite/Montmorillonite mineral found in a porphyritic rock of Alpe di Siusi has an I/M ratio of 80:20. Introducing proper chemical parameters in a Q-Mode program of sixty-six Illites and Illite/Montmorillonite from the literature suggests the possibility of distinguishing Illites from Illite/Montmorillonite.

Well crystallized chlorite has been detected in a Typic Hapludult developed on quartz porphyry at Ulsan, Korea, after treatment of the <0.2 µm fraction with a high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) technique. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) characteristics of the chlorite suggest that it is an Fe-rich variety and this was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The chlorite could not be detected with certainty in the <0.2 µm fraction but is clearly present throughout the soil profile in the <0.2 µm fraction. It is suggested that this chlorite is residual inherited chlorite, the rest of which has dissolved in the acidic environment (pH 4—5).

Kaolinite aggregates are the major alteration product in the strongly deformed areas of a shear zone developed in contact-metamorphosed slates from the Southern Iberian Massif near Jaén (SE Spain). Muscovite and Fe-rich chlorite in strain shadows of broken andalusite crystals were observed in slates from less deformed areas. The presence of phyllosilicate packets nearly perpendicular to each other and veinlets parallel to {110} of andalusite reveal the importance of cleavage-controlled fracturing of andalusite to the mineral reactions. The compositional similarity between kaolinite and andalusite suggests a direct transformation of andalusite to kaolinite in the strongly altered area. The absence of clear preferred orientation of phyllosilicates relative to andalusite, and the compositional differences of andalusite with muscovite and chlorite from the less altered samples, indicate andalusite dissolution and chlorite-muscovite precipitation during a first mineral-growth stage. Muscovite-kaolinite and chlorite-kaolinite intergrowths indicate a later retrograde replacement stage.

The development and application of Fe-rich palygorskite clay has been restricted significantly by its red colour and low grade. Moreover, the nano-structured properties of palygorskite and the relatively large Fe content of Fe-rich palygorskite clay have received insufficient attention. The present study involved the synthesis of Ni-based catalysts via a coprecipitation method using Fe-rich palygorskite clay as the support. The catalysts were then evaluated for their performance for catalytic steam reforming of toluene (CSRT). The experimental findings revealed that the Fe in Fe-rich palygorskite clay interacted strongly with Ni and formed Fe-Ni alloys. The catalyst with a Ni/Fe mass ratio of 14 (Ni14/FePal) calcined in air at 600°C exhibited superior performance for CSRT under the reaction temperature 700°C and S/C molar ratio of 1.0. According to the kinetics study, Ni14/FePal exhibited the lowest apparent activation energy (33.99 kJ mol−1) among the catalysts, which further confirmed the superior catalytic activity in CSRT. The characterizations of the catalysts used demonstrated that the excellent stability and resistance to coke formation of Ni14/FePal were attributable to the presence of a sufficient amount of highly dispersed Fe-Ni alloys on its surface.

In this study, the adsorption of NH3 gas on a bentonite from Ünye (Turkey) in its natural state and after acid treatments, was investigated experimentally at 298 K and up to 100 kPa. Bentonite was treated with HCl solutions of various concentrations (0.5–2.5 M) at 75°C for 4 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), N2 adsorption and thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) were used to characterize the bentonite before and after acid treatment. The quantitative XRD analysis demonstrated that the bentonite sample was composed predominantly of smectite (75%), with abundant feldspar (20%) and minor opal-CT, analcime and quartz (5%). Increasing gas adsorption values of acid-treated bentonites were analysed depending on the structural changes of the clay. The NH3-adsorption capacities of the bentonite samples (3.801–5.068 mmol g–1) were also compared with previously studied clay-based materials (0.828–4.000 mmol g–1) in terms of their textural and structural differences.

The Clay Minerals Group (CMG), the first of the Special Interest Groups of the Mineralogical Society of the UK and Ireland, was inaugurated in January 1947. The CMG, together with its Belgian equivalent (originally the Comité Belge pour l'Etude des Argiles, later the Belgian Clay Group, now defunct), formed the world's first organizations dedicated to clay mineral research. The CMG celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2022. The Group's aims are to stimulate interest in clay mineralogy, to facilitate an exchange of information between members by providing facilities for reading and discussing papers on research on clay minerals (and allied topics) and to expedite their publication and to encourage practical applications of such research, and these have remained reassuringly the same throughout its history. A founder and active member of both the European Clay Groups Association and the Association Internationale Pour L'Etude des Argiles, the CMG has promoted clay science through the publication of the highly regarded journal Clay Minerals and a series of influential book titles, organizing international and national scientific conferences and meetings, the George Brown Lecture series, providing bursaries and grants to assist researchers and hosting the Images of Clay archive. The initial and sustained success of the CMG has been largely due to the labours of many officers and committee members, some of whom have been recognized for their science and service with awards from the Mineralogical Society of the UK and Ireland and elsewhere. By maintaining this effort, the evident, continuing demand for clay mineral research to assist with changing societal needs should ensure the relevance and health of the CMG for the foreseeable future.

In this study, stable and radioactive lead removal from aqueous solution by adsorption using bentonite, zeolite and perlite minerals obtained from various locations in Türkiye was studied in batch experiments. The adsorbents were first characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and then the physicochemical properties were determined. The effects of various factors that influence adsorption, such as solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial Pb2+ ion concentration, temperature and shaking rate, were studied. The adsorption of Pb2+ was modelled using the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherms. The adsorption capacities of the minerals for Pb2+ followed the order: bentonite > zeolite > perlite, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 131.6, 36.1 and 21.5 mg g–1, respectively. The adsorption data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm. The bonding of lead ions on the adsorbents was confirmed by XRF and FTIR analyses after the adsorption process. The adsorption of Pb2+ ions on the adsorbents was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption process took place by cation exchange in addition to electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, radioactive 210Pb2+ adsorption on bentonite, zeolite and perlite was studied, with the analyte being analysed using a liquid scintillation counter. It was seen that in addition to Pb(II) ions, these minerals also adsorbed the radioactive decay products of 210Pb, which were 210Po and 210Bi. The removal percentages of 210Pb were 95%, 38% and 30% and those of 210Po were 75%, 60% and 74% for bentonite, zeolite and perlite, respectively.

A Pickering emulsion was prepared via synergistic stabilization of a lipase and palygorskite particles. The optimum conditions for the stabilization of the Pickering emulsion, such as the concentrations of the palygorskite particles and lipase, were explored. The morphology of emulsion droplets was examined using digital optical microscopy and polarizing optical microscopy. The palygorskite–lipase co-stabilized Pickering emulsions were investigated by determination of the adsorption rate, pH and zeta potential of the aqueous dispersion, as well as by determining the contact angle values of the lipase solution on a palygorskite disc that was immersed in toluene. The catalytic performance of the immobilized lipase in the Pickering emulsion was studied via the investigation of its thermal stability, storage stability and reusability. The immobilized lipase showed greater stability than the free lipase. The lipase immobilized by Pickering emulsion retained a high level of activity even after seven periods of recycling.

It is generally agreed that the English mid-Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous fuller's earths were derived from volcanic ash. In the Lower Cretaceous fuller's earth of Woburn, Kerr (1932) recognized partially decomposed relics of shards in a matrix of montmorillonite, and Grim (1933, 1935) described montmorillonite pseudomorphs after glass fragments in the Bath fuller's earth of Bathonian age. Jeans et al. (1977) published twenty-two SEM pictures of pyroclasts, including sanidine, sphene, trachytic pumice, and a basaltic glass fragment. Photomicrographs of the Lower Cretaceous fuller's earth show shard relicts ranging in length from 0·8-1·26 mm (median ∼1·12 mm) and in thickness from 5-15µm (Jeans et al., 1977, fig. 14a). However, much remains obscure about the shape, size and mode of packing of the argillized vitric particles which make up the bulk of fuller's earths. This note describes the texture of an English fuller's earth which was freeze-fractured (Tessier, 1978), prior to examination with a scanning electron microscope.

L'organisation de l'espace interlamellaire des vermiculites a été comparée en fonction: (i) de la nature du cation (Mg, Ni, Ca, Sr et Ba) et de son état d'hydratation (bicouche, monocouche et anhydre), (ii) de la nature du feuillet (charge et localisation des substitutions). Le facteur prépondérant, celui qui confère à l'espace interlamellaire son caractère ordonné ou non, est la nature du cation en particulier sa taille et son degré d'hydratation. La charge du feuillet apparaît comme un facteur complémentaire, elle limite la taille des domaines ordonnés.

Porrenga (1968) described the green clays from the Lower Oligocene of Aardebrug, east of Leuven (Louvain) in Belgium as glauconitic illite, a mineral intermediate in chemistry between glauconite and illite, and presumed this clay to be neoformed, though the mode of origin is not discussed. Notably, most of the section from which Porrenga obtained his sample of 'glauconitic illite' is nonmarine. Non-marine glauconites are rare in the literature and there is no standard terminology. Parry and Reeves (1966) reported green pellets of 10 Å clay from recent sediments at Lake Mound, Texas, but with no detrital green clay as source and an authigenic origin is assumed. Green clays described as Fe-rich mica occur in lacustrine environments in the Oligocene of Cantal (Jung, 1954), and the Massif Central (Gabis, 1963) in France. These deposits are derived from altered crystalline basement.

Hand-made bricks were manufactured from natural sediments by firing at 700°C and 800°C after which they were hydrothermally altered at 150°C in a high-pressure reactor for 1200 h. Sediments and fired pieces were studied by X-ray diffraction. The <2 μm size-fraction of fired and hydrolysed samples were also studied by X-ray diffraction and oxygen isotope analysis. The oxygen isotope composition of the samples became depleted in 18O by alteration. Our results are consistent with a process of hydration and hydroxylation of the partially destroyed clay minerals in the fired bricks. The work is relevant to understanding the origins and alteration processes in old ceramic materials.
