Gibbsite, the dominant mineral in red and yellow earths from Mount Zomba in southern Nyasaland, is derived directly from orthoclase and acid plagioclase (albite-oligoclase). The bauxitization apparently took place at an early stage in the history of the mountain. The evidence suggests that kaolinization succeeds bauxitization in the sequence of weathering, and is related to present-day weathering conditions.

The hydrothermal reaction of kaolinite in the systems Li2O–K2O–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–HCl and Li2O–Na2O–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–HCl, at pH between 9 and 11, has been investigated at 200–250°C from 1 to 180 days.The X-ray diffraction study of the K-bearing system indicates that the solid products formed were Li-A(BW) zeolite, crystalline silica, and randomly ordered chlorite-smectite mixed layers, dioctahedral on average, with a chlorite:smectite ratio of ~1:4.Study by electron microscopy reveals, however, the presence of mixtures of very thin particles of smectite, di,trioctahedral chlorite and mixed-layer phases.The X-ray study of the solid products formed in the Na-bearing system reveals that the neo-formed phases were Li-A(BW) zeolite, analcime and partially ordered chlorite-vermiculite mixed-layers with high chlorite:vermiculite ratio. The transmission microscopic study of these phases shows the presence of dioctahedral ‘vermiculitic’ curved particles and di,trioctahedral chlorite-like particles.In both cases, long reaction times cause formation of a 7 Å phase with composition intermediate between kaolinite and serpentine.The composition of the solutions suggests that the stable phases would be chlorite/smectite mixed-layers, with compositions near tosudite in the case of the K-bearing reaction and both a dioctahedral phase (tosudite?) and a trioctahedral one (clinochlore) in the case of the Na-bearing reaction.

Two different approaches used to express the tortuosity of water pathways in a solid clay body are known: (1) a static approach based on microscopic measurement in thin sections; and (2) a dynamic approach based on ‘imbibition’ speed. Each is expressed by a corresponding equation. The second method has the following advantages over the first: (a) it enables the testing of a much larger volume than that observed in a common thin section; (b) it measures the effects of all particles, including the finest fragments barely visible under optical microscope which also have influence on hydraulic conductivity or the imbibition speed of water; (c) in the case of expansible clays, the magnitude of k (tortuosity of pathways including the shape of particles) can be compared with k for non-expansible clays using a non-polar liquid, e.g. tetraline; (d) the measurement of the imbibition speed into the clay aggregate through a constant area is automated. Specific properties and processes important for sealing clays are discussed in the connection with the dynamic approach.

In order to improve the optical properties and enhance the stability of Zn1–xCdxS nanoparticles, which are important optoelectrical materials, the ternary Zn1–xCdxS nanoparticles were enclosed in a layered octosilicate by a three-step process, namely (i) protonation of Naoctosilicate, (ii) ion-exchange in order to introduce Zn and Cd ions into the interlayer space, and (iii) addition of S2– to form Zn1–xCdxS particles in the interlayer space of the octosilicate. The basal spacing (~10 Å) of the final ZnCdS-Oct-n (n = 1, 2, 3, 4) composites noticeably increased in comparison with that of the precursor H-Oct (7.5 Å). This may be attributed to the incorporation of larger size Zn1–xCdxS particles into the interlayer space of H-Oct. The UV-visible spectra of the composites suggested that the transmission band-edges gradually shifted to low energy with increasing molar ratio of Cd/Zn. Moreover, the transmission band-edges of the composites are between those of layered Octosilicate, ZnS, and CdS. TEM observation confirmed that the size of Zn1–xCdxS nanoparticles enclosed in the layered silicate was about ~3–5 nm.

Detailed multi-scale characterization of the kaolin quality and the controlling depositional environment is crucial for optimal quality upgrading and for prioritizing potential exploitation areas. In the present work, the quality of El-Tih kaolin, Egypt, was investigated using the chemical/mineralogical characteristics as well as the field observations of the clay. Chemical analysis of major oxides was carried out using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDS-XRF) spectrometry. Mineralogical analyses were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-WDS). Spatial heterogeneity of the quality was evaluated applying kriging geostatistical techniques and potential zones were identified.

Results clarified an upward gradual deterioration of the quality via a decrease in the Al2O3 content and thickness of the clay layers, and an increase in the TiO2 content. According to the kriging maps, areas of high potentiality indices (PI) characterized by high Al2O3 and low SiO2 content and maximum thickness of the kaolin are located to the west and east, and decrease toward the central part of the study area. The high PI zones are dominated by pseudo-hexagonal platy kaolinite, often forming accordion- and book-like aggregates with subordinate quartz and traces of Fe and Ti oxides, yielding minimal TiO2 and Fe2O3 contents. These zones of high PI are considered optimal for exploitation. Kaolinite was formed as a result of intensive weathering of rhyolite/granite and basalt in the source area, and subsequent erosion, transportation and deposition of the weathering mantles in a flood environment with marked depositional energy variations. Results allowed comparison with worldwide kaolin occurrences, and suggested the suitability of the studied kaolins for use in paper coating and filling and in higher-grade ceramics, after removal of free Fe- and Ti-oxide impurities.

Clay minerals are used widely in health products both as cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients. To optimize use, natural compounds are mixed with clay powder. The aim of the present study was to synthesize new, coloured hybrids based on purified Tunisian clay and powders of natural flowers: Malva sylvestris, Chrysanthemum coronarium, Silene dioica, Anagallis monellin and Pelargonium × hortorum. The floral pigments in Tunisian flowers were studied. The chlorophylls (a and b), total flavonoids (TF), total phenolic compounds (TPC), and carotenoids were analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD). In addition, the antioxidant capacity was determined using the oxygenated radical absorption capacity assay (ORAC) and the antioxidant capacity to reduce ferric ion assay (FRAP). The properties of the studied clay were evaluated by means of pharmaceutical and microbiological tests. The coloured hybrids were prepared by solid–solid reaction and analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Chlorophyll a is present in large quantities in the Malva flower which presents the smallest antioxidant capacity. Chlorophyll b and the TPC are more abundant in the Pelargonium × hortorum. The TF appears in large quantities in the Anagallis flower. The carotenoids are present in the largest amounts in the Chrysanthemum. The results of the clay characterization justify its use as a pharmaceutical and cosmetic agent. The mixture of dried flowers and purified clay is used in the synthesis of new and biocoloured hybrids; these can be used as biocosmetic products without negative side effects on human health or the environment.

Quantitative estimates were made by visually matching computer-simulated with experimental X-ray powder diffractometer patterns for two samples. One was a natural mixture of dickite and nacrite in about equal proportions. The second sample contained mostly quartz with corundum and mullite in small (0.5–1%) amounts. Percentages deduced from pattern matching agreed to within ±10% of the weight fractions of the components determined by an alternative method of analysis.

La phase <2 µm issue de l'évolution géochimique superficielle d'une trachydolérite de Provence s'est révélée être presque exclusivement constituée d'une smectite. Son examen, grâce à plusieurs techniques, et notamment l'identification des produits de recristallisation à haute température, montre qu'il s'agit d'un minéral 2/1, surtout magnésien. L'établissement de sa formule structurale approchée, calculée sur la base de 11 oxygènes, en ferait un minéral intermédiaire entre les smectites diet trioctaédriques, avec une occupation de 2.55 cations en sites octaédriques. Cette smectite de Provence n'est pas une saponite au sens strict, compte-tenu du nombre des cations R3+ = 0.94 en position octaédrique, plus élevé que celui de ces minéraux, tandis que la part des cations R2+ en ces mêmes sites est inférieure au seuil de 85%.

Three clay materials (codded MY3, KG and KK) from western Cameroon were selected and investigated for the production of refractory bricks. Samples MY3 and KG are kaolinite-rich materials, having clay mineral contents of 88% and 72%, respectively, whereas KK is a sand-rich material with a total clay content of 44%. Chamottes were prepared using each clay, and the ground chamottes were later used in the refractory formulation, with each raw clay used as a binding phase. After firing, the X-ray diffraction analyses of all of the refractory bricks indicated the same mineral assemblage made of quartz, cristobalite and mullite. The cristobalite is due to high-temperature conversion of quartz, whereas the mullite is due to clay mineral conversion. The evaluation of the linear shrinkage, physical properties (including bulk density and open porosity) and mechanical testing through refractoriness under load and compressive strength indicates that all of these clays could be used as raw materials for standard clay refractory materials. These results stand as a proof for the potential for these locally available materials to be used as raw materials for refractories that could be locally produced to reduce the cost of access to refractory raw materials faced by industries located in Cameroon.

The rheological properties of three Na-activated, trioctahedral Mg-bentonites (hectorite clay from the CMS Source Clay Project repository, saponite clay from Spain and stevensite clay from Rhassoul, Morocco) and a sepiolite clay from Greece were examined after dynamic ageing at temperatures up to 230°C. The 5% w/v suspensions were prepared by dispersing the clay mineral samples in distilled water. The suspensions underwent dynamic, thermal ageing for 16 h before determination of the viscosity, filtration loss, filter cake thickness and pH and the concentration of dissolved Na+ and Mg2+. Thermal ageing contributed to the dispersion of clay particles, with a direct effect on plastic and apparent viscosity, introducing pseudoplastic behaviour. With the exception of the stevensite clay at 230°C that displayed limited dissolution at 230°C and partial conversion to kerolite, the clays were stable at high temperatures. The Na-activation of all clays except for stevensite was not adversely affected by thermal ageing. Thermal ageing of stevensite at 230°C facilitated Na exchange and yielded suspension with high viscosity and low filtrate loss. Only the suspensions of hectorite and those of stevensite aged at 230°C met with American Petroleum Institute specifications. The thermal behaviour and rheological properties of the clays might be interpreted according to the intrinsic properties of the clay minerals, such as layer charge and charge distribution.

Natural zeolite (clinoptilolite)-based geopolymers were synthesized using alkali aluminate solution, including aluminate anodizing waste solution. The effect of calcination of the clinoptilolite sample at 900°C was investigated. The samples were studied by powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and N2-specific surface area. The alkali aluminate-activated clinoptilolite geopolymers are characterized by satisfactory compressive strength (up to 37 MPa), low density and acceptable shrinkage. The clinoptilolite geopolymer obtained contains an X-ray amorphous phase and newly formed phillipsite and zeolite NaP. The presence of zeolite phases in the geopolymer agglomerate could be beneficial in products with specific qualities and properties, such as ion exchange, passive cooling, antimicrobial activity, etc.

The objective of this work was to use air-dried sepiolite granules as an additive in cigarette filter tips to increase the removal yield of tar and nicotine from mainstream smoke. Granules with a mass of 95 mg per cigarette filter and a mean particle size (D) of 0.05–0.41 mm were used to constrain the effects of the mean particle size and mass of sepiolite in the removal process. The granules were sandwiched in common cellulose acetate filter tips. Maximum removal yields of 90% were obtained when D ≤ 0.10 mm. Filters containing granules with a mean size of 0.10 mm and mass variations from 35 to 95 mg were tested, and increasing amounts of sepiolite added led to progressively greater yields of tar and nicotine from 20% to 90%. The sepiolite granules were examined using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques both before and after smoke experimentation. It is suggested that tar and nicotine were condensed both on the fibre clusters of the sepiolite granules and in the voids between them during the flow of the mainstream smoke.

Allophane-like materials occur in the weathered zones of the phosphate-rich veins hosted in Silurian metasediments of the Catalonian Coastal Ranges. These metasediments also host sulphide and phosphate sedimentary mineralizations. Mineralogical and geochemical investigations of the allophanic samples indicate that they comprise Si-rich allophane, with a molar SiO2/Al2O3 ratio ranging between 1.19 and 2.23, with amorphous Al-(Ca) phosphate and hydroxylapatite as major minerals, and minor goethite and quartz. It is assumed that allophane, amorphous Al-(Ca) phosphate and hydroxylapatite come from the reaction of acid solutions, released during the weathering of sulphide interbedded in black shales, with phosphate-rich veins and volcano- sedimentary host rocks. Silica-alumina gels were deposited in fissures and cavities left by a previous dissolution of the phosphate-rich veins. Later the phosphate minerals filled the conchoidal microfractures and shrinkage microcracks of the allophane.

Seven brickmaking clays from various geological horizons have been studied by differential thermal and X-ray methods. The minerals detected included kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite, chlorite, swelling chlorite, calcite and quartz, and rough estimates were made of the quantities present. For the same clays, deformation-under-load was measured at four different heating rates, and strength and water absorption were determined on fired blocks. No correlation between the firing properties and mineralogical constitution is observable.

This mineral is found in an ahnost pure state, forming a layer 1–2 m. thick at an average depth of about 50 m. beneath ground level, on the northern slope of the Monteti near to Capelbio (Orbetello, Tuscany). Above the layer of micaceous mineral there is developed a series of clays containing halloysite, metahalloysite, montmorillonite and kaolinite, locally rich in iron and manganese hydroxides. The series is quaternary, and lies on top of phyllites which have been attributed to the Permian. The whole series of clayey and ochreous minerals is of low-temperature hydrothermal origin, as I have shown in a recent communication (1948).
