The densest lattice packings of equal spheres in Euclidean spaces En of n dimensions are known for n ⩽ 8. However, it is not known for any n ⩾ 3 whether there can be any non-lattice sphere packing with density exceeding that of the densest lattice packing. W. Barlow described [1] a non-lattice packing in E3 with the same density as the densest lattice packing, and I described [6] three non-lattice packings in E5 which also have this property.

Let K0 and K1 be equational classes of algebras of the same type. The smallest equational class K containing K0 and K1 is the join of K0 and K1; in notation, K = K0 ∨ K1. The direct product K0 × K1 is the class of all algebras α which are isomorphic to an algebra of the form a0 × a1, a0 ∈ K1. Naturally, K0 × K1 ⊆ K0 ∨ K1, Our first theorem states a very simple condition under which K0 × K1 = K0 ∨ K1, and an additional condition under which the representation α ∨ a0 × a1 unique.

In a recent note [1], M. R. Embry proved that if A is an operator on a Banach space then, under a certain condition on the spectrum of A, each operator commuting with An also commutes with A, where n is a fixed positive integer. It turns out that, when A is a finite matrix, Embry′s conditions imply that A is a polynomial in An and hence plainly each operator commuting with An also commutes with A.

A family of sets {Aα} is said by Miller [3] to have property B if there exists a set S which meets all the sets Aα and contains none of them. Property B has been extensively studied in several recent papers (see the references in [2] and the last chapter of P. Erdös and A. Hajnal, On chromatic number of graphs and set systems, Acta. Math. Acad. Sci. Hung. 17 (1966) 61–99).

We consider ordinary graphs, that is, finite, undirected graphs with no loops or multiple lines. The product (also called cartesian product [4]) G1 × G2 of two graphs G1 and G2 with point sets V1 and V2, respectively, has the cartesian product V1 × V2 as its set of points. Two points (u1, u2) and (v1, v2) are adjacent if u1 = v1 and u2 is adjacent with v2 or u2 = v2 and u1 is adjacent with v1.

In the course of work on factor groups of the modular group, A. O. L. Atkin (private communication) obtained the permutations

for T = T1, T2. It was evident that neither pair S, T generates either A12 or LF(2, 11), so he suggested that they probably generate the Mathieu group M2.

Let X1, X2,…, Xk, denote k ≥ 2 indeterminates and let f(X1,…, Xk) be a homogeneous polynomial, in GF(pn) [X1,…, Xk], which is irreducible but not absolutely irreducible over GF(pn). Thus f is irreducible in GF(pn)[X1,…, Xk] but reducible in some GF(pnm) [X1,…, Xk], m > 1. For any polynomial h(X1,…, Xk) in GF(pnℓ)[X1,…, Xk, ℓ ≥ 1, let Npn(h) denote the number of (x1,…, xk) ∈ GF(pn)×…× GF(pn) such that (hx1…, xk) = 0.

We prove in this paper that fifteen classes of rings coincide with the class of rings named in the title. One of them is the class of rings R such that X2 = X for each R-ideal X: we shall refer to rings with this property (and thus to the rings of the title) as fully idempotent rings. The simple rings and the (von Neumann) regular rings are fully idempotent. Indeed, every finitely generated right or left ideal of a regular ring is generated by an idempotent [l, p. 42], so that X2 = X holds for every one-sided ideal X.

Let X be a compact metric space. By a packing in X we mean a subset S ⊆ X such that, for x, y ∈ S with x ≠ y, the distance d(x, y) ≥ 1. Since X is compact, any packing of X is finite. In fact, the set of numbers

is bounded. The cardinality of the largest packing in X will be called the packing number of X and will be denoted by ρ(X). If A(X) and P(X) denote the area and perimeter, respectively, of a compact convex subset X of the plane, then a special case of a result conjectured by H. Zassenhaus [6] and proved by N. Oler [l] is the following.

In this note we present an extremely short proof of Goldie's theorem on the structure of semiprime Noetherian rings [1]. The outline of the proof was given by Procesi and Small in [4]. By utilizing the concept of the singular ideal of a ring we have been able to weaken the hypotheses of many of the steps in [4]. Most significantly, we are able to avoid a reduction to the case of prime rings, and in Lemma 5 we give an informative list of the relationship between regular elements and essential ideals of semiprime rings.

In this note, we characterize quasi-Frobenius rings by a weakened form of the usual condition, that every ideal is an annihilator ideal.

We then apply this result to pure rings in the sense of Cohn and to dominant rings, a concept arising in the study of ring epimorphisms. All rings considered have a unit element.

In an earlier paper [8], one of the authors has established some Vandermonde type convolution identities involving multinomial coefficients with several summations which evidently are regeneralizations of identities in [1] with one summation. In this paper similar identities are derived for coefficients (defined below) of a general type, in the line of the results in [2] and [3], Furthermore, in a series of papers [4], [5], [6], Gould has obtained results on inversion of series and on classical polynomials by an extensive use of these identities with one summation.

Let X, Y be locally compact Hausdorff spaces and μ, ν be Radón outer measures on X and Y respectively. The classical product outer measure ϕ on X × Y generated by measurable rectangles, without direct reference to the topology, turns out to have some serious drawbacks. For example, one can only prove that closed sets (and hence Baire sets) are ϕ-measurable. It is unknown, even when X and Y are compact, whether closed sets are ϕ-measurable.

The theorem of Borsuk-Ulam states that n odd functions on the n-dimensional sphere always have a common zero. We have tried to obtain a similar theorem by "slightly" changing the conditions for the functions, but it turned out that only a very weak analogue can be expected in our case. Here we want to prove a few results and mention some of the questions which have remained unanswered.

Let us call an equational class (variety) K of algebras permutable if and only if every pair of congruences on each K-algebra is permutable. Similarly, we will call K modular (distributive) if the congruence lattice of each K-algebra is modular (distributive).

In earlier papers [3] and [4] some Vandermonde type convolution identities with several summations were established which were the extensions of Gould's work that involved one summation. Furthermore, these identities were utilized to obtain some inverse series relations for functions of several variables. As a continuation, this paper deals with some further generalizations of Gould's work in [1] and [2].

In [1], Coxeter gave a complete enumeration of the regular maps on a torus. The maps consist of two families of type {4, 4}b, c and {3, 6}b, c (and their duals). b and c are non-negative integers, which determine the maps uniquely. The maps are irreflexible if and only if bc(b - c) ≠ 0.

On surfaces of genus h > 1, irreflexible regular maps are rather exceptional. The simplest surface of negative characteristic which admits irreflexible regular maps is the orientable surface of genus 7. This was shown by the author [4, Theorem 3. 1 ]. The corresponding map was discovered by J. R. Edmonds [2, p. 388].
