Let C1 denote the class of all groups with no non-trivial central factors. We prove the following theorem

There exist non-trivial locally solvable C1 groups; but there is no non-trivial locally k-step polynilpotent C1 group for any integer k.

It is well known that a minimal normal subgroup of a locally solvable group is abelian. Thus no non-trivial locally solvable group can be pluperfect - the class of all perfect groups in which every subnormal subgroup is also perfect.

The main object of this paper is to give an explicit object in the study of projective covers in the category of compact Hausdorff spaces and continuous maps studied in [2] and [5]. be a projective cover of the Stone-Čech compactification βX of a completely regular Hausdorff space X. Here, it will be shown that the maximal ideal space endowed with the Stone topology of the maximal ring of quotients of the ring C(X) of all real valued continuous functions on X is homeomorphic to K.

If A is a bounded linear operator on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space H, let lat A denote the collection of all subspaces of H that are invariant under A; i.e., all closed linear subspaces M such that x ∈ M implies (Ax) ∈ M. There is very little known about the question: which families F of subspaces are invariant subspace lattices in the sense that they satisfy F = lat A for some A? (See [5] for a summary of most of what is known in answer to this question.) Clearly, if F is an invariant subspace lattice, then {0} ∈ F, H ∈ F and F is closed under arbitrary intersections and spans. Thus, every invariant subspace lattice is a complete lattice.

The maximal ring of quotients (in the sense of Johnson [4] and Utumi [5[) of the ring C(X) of real valued continuous functions on a completely regular Hausdorff space X has been studied in [1] and [2]. The aim of the present paper is to provide some additional results to those, and to study the relevant extensions on the absence of the real maximal ideals.

In an earlier work [12] we considered the case of (0, 2, 3) interpolation by trigonometric polynomials at the points , i = 0, 1,…, n-1. By (0, 2, 3) interpolation we mean the problem of finding a trigonometric polynomial of suitable order whose values, second and third derivatives are prescribed at some given points. An interesting distinction between the (0, 2) interpolation studied by the Hungarian mathematician O.

In this note we show the existence of a spread which is not a dual spread, thus answering a question in [1]. We also obtain some related results on spreads and partial spreads.

Let ∑ = PG(2t-l, F) be a projective space of odd dimension (2t-l, ≥2) over the field F. In accordance with [1] we make the following definitions. A partial spread S of ∑ is a collection of (t-l)-dimensional projective subspaces of ∑ which are pairwise disjoint (skew).

In what follows the notation and terminology of [7] are used and all rings are assumed to have a unity element.

The purpose of this note is to give some partial answers to the question: under which conditions on a ring A and a group G is the group ring AG semi-perfect?

For the convenience of the reader a few definitions and results will be reviewed. A ring R is called semi-perfect if R/RadR (Jacobson radical) is completely reducible and idempotents can be lifted modulo RadR (i.e., if x is an idempotent of R/RadR there is an idempotent e of R so that e + RadR = x).

In this note we give a brief exposition of the mathematical foundations of the theory of spin for both classical and quantum mechanical systems on oriented Riemannian manifolds. We shall use freely the notations and theory developed in Abraham [1] and Marsden [2, 3], From the physical point of view nothing new appears. The whole purpose of the note is to explain how the theory fits in the spirit of [1].

This paper solves a question posed by P. Erdös:

The number of elements in the sum A + B of two complexes A and B of a group G which have multiple representations a + b = a '+ b' has been investigated by Scherk and Kemperman [1]. Kemperman [2] appealed to transfinite techniques (to order G) to prove:

Let F be a free group of rank ⩾ 2, let F/R ≅ π, and let F0 = F/[R, R]. Auslander and Lyndon showed that the center of Fo is a subgroup of R/[R, R] = Ro, and that it is non-trivial if and only if π is finite [1, corollary 1.3 and theorem 2]. In this paper it will be shown that there is a canonically defined (and not always trivial) quotient group of the center of F which depends only on π.

Let A be an m × n matrix of complex numbers. Let Aτ and A* denote the transpose and conjugate transpose, respectively, of A. We say A is diagonal if A contains only zeros in all positions (i, j) with i ≠ j. In a recently published paper [4], M.H. Pearl established the following fact: There exist real orthogonal matrices O1 and O2 (O1 m-square, O2 n-square) such that O1AO2 is diagonal, if and only if both AA* and A*A are real. It is the purpose of this paper to show that a theorem substantially stronger than this result of Pearl's is included in the real case of a theorem of N.A. Wiegmann [2]. (For other papers related to Wiegmann's, see [l; 3].)

A topological space X is called a direct limit of a family (Xα) of subspaces of X if and only if
