page 35 note a Mary ascended the throne on the 6th July, 1553, and filled it alone until 25th July, 1554. Lady Jane Grey had assumed the crown on the 6th July, and continued to be called Queen by her supporters until the 17th of the same month. Sir W. Cavendish's accounts contain no notice of her usurpation, but he was continued in the place of Treasurer of the Chamber under Mary, and under Philip and Mary. This is from the volume in Sir W. C. Trevelyan' possession, on the cover of which is written, “The boke of the Copies of the Certyficat made to the Kinges Mates Counsel!,” which extends from 19 Feb. 37°H. VIII., to 24 October 2°–3° Philip and Mary, and from which extracts have been already given.
page 36 note a It was part of the complaint of Sir W. Cavendish that he was required to make payments of bills which were never-sent in to his department.
page 38 note a This item and some others refer to the “solemn embassage,” as Sir John Hayward calls it, of the Marquis of Northampton, the Bishop of Ely, Sir Philip Hoby, and others, to the King of France, in order to present him with the order of the Garter “and to treat with him of other secret affairs.” Sir Gilbert Dethick, Garter-King-at-Arms, and other heralds, accompanied the ambassadors.
